Vince, yesterday was my fifth market. I have been doing exactly as you advised. I have my tent and I have a sign for free tarot readings and a donation jar so that I have a wealth of people who I don't know who let me practice reading for. I have now done approximately 100 practice readings. People generously give me feedback and my costs have always been covered through my donation jar. Real-world experience helps me come home and know what I need to work on to be better next time. Thank you for being my mentor

Crowley made that deck (actually Frida Harris did, with Crowley's direction) with a very specific idea in mind. The idea was to make a proper Golden Dawn deck, Crowley hated the Rider Waite deck as it concealed many of the secrets of the order since Waite was still under oath not to reveal those secrets, like the color scales on the court cards. The Thoth deck was for decades the only deck to use those palettes. As it was to be used for magical work and Golden Dawn's own divination method, "The Openning of the Key" (only teached to those that reached Adeptus Minor onwards), the cards have very specific energy as is the energy betweenthe cards used as magical mirrors that is read on that method. They have to be all diferent as in that spread you may have 20 or more cards fanned out when you analize a pile ( all deck is used and separated in four piles that represent the four letters of the unspeakable name of god YHVH). Even more so "The openning of the key" is the only divination method teached by Crowley on his companion book "The Book of Thoth" . Waite on the other hand didn't revealed that spread on his Pictorial Key to the Tarot. The Thoth deck is an excelent deck, but it was made with a very specific purpose in mind, although it still works great for simple three card spreads or the celtic cross. It has a particular character, some say negative, to it though and only experience with the deck will tell if it's for one, like Crowley said : " One must treat the cards as living beings, one must live with them and they must also live with you".

Wow! Thanks for your input on this! I never heard any of that about the Thoth deck but it makes sense. Thanks Neo Phyte!

Neo Phyte Well said!! It’s so nice to know that others have read and studied Crowley’s life work and the amazing contribution of Lady Frieda Harris. To me it’s as if the deck itself became the act of ultimate manifestation.

I am loving this journey of tarot via the Thoth system--it's lush with symbolism which gives me a deeper understanding of the more subtle realms, but this deck will either compel you or it won't. It's really a journey without goal.

So you think it’s more accurate how she copied the original recipe and tweaked the original signs the card represented. Do you know what most people do they call The High Priestess a Pisces card when it’s a Cancer all the representation and planet is the moon. And why oh because Pisces has the moon so there for it represents the moon no the moon card is assigned to Neptune dumb dumb just because your card is the moon doesn’t mean that it now belongs to Pisces . And readers that are dumb do this confusing people having them believe Pisces is the high priestess every Pisces I knew always jumped from person to person the can’t be alone are very dependent on the partners for happiness. How do you ignore the similar black and white from the high priestess to the chariot, representing yin snd yang

Paul Hughes Barlow and Nick Dutch use Thoth primarily. Every card has a unique colour in order that the reader will learn the colour code without needing the images to register directly. This is useful with spreads that have a ludicrous number of cards (Opening of The Key et-al) and one finds himself in a confined space. Practical and possibly esoteric. Crowley also borrowed from the tattwa.

I must say that, yes this deck is incredibly deep and it’s not for the faint of heart. I can’t imagine being able to draw much from it without the study of Crowley’s essays, the Kabbalah and hermetic texts- and Egyptian astrology.
I’ve lived with this deck for 22 years now, and it with me. Reading The Book Of Thoth is a must.

Thanks for your feedback on the Thoth deck! I'm getting others as well saying that the Book of Thoth is a must for this deck. I think I had the book a couple of times over the years but never really gave it much of a look. Maybe I should have! Thanks for watching my channel Kittenface! Best - Vincent

I finally bought my first tarot deck and intuitively the choice fell on the Thoth Tarot, despite the challenges many testimonials present. It is "The" tarot deck, in my humble opinion.

So, the Thoth deck spoke to me very loudly. When I was living in SF, so many tarot readers, friends in practice told me it is a "dark" deck. I heard so many rumors. However, some ladies who I knew used it. I purchased one when I was young (the twenties) and I could read with it but it has a power on its own. I kept all my decks on the other side of the house in a drawer. One day, I was cleaning and found (out of all of my tarot decks) the Thoth "Tower card" underneath my bed. Just that card. I had NO idea how it got there. It creeped me out. It was "warning" me about something that was about to happen (which happened three days later and it was bad). I look back and have always had a "high" respect that deck but at the same time..I don't like the fact that the Thoth deck (with its power) can just walk on its own. I got rid of it a couple of years later when I moved. Not my cup of tea. As much as I respect the deck, it is a BIG responsibility to own that deck. Now, I find myself with Thoth "hybrids" and not Thoth directly.

That's unsettling! I have also heard it gives negative readings when you are having troubles. Whereas with the RWS and Marseilles I get balanced readings and solutions.

The Thoth deck is my first ever tarot deck. That deck had always grabbed my attention long before I was ever interested in reading tarot.
Many RWS style decks later, Thoth tarot has always given me richer and deeper readings than RWS ever has.

I've always adored the Star card in this one, too. I'd never thought about the differences in the styles of wands or pentacles, etc. That's very interesting to consider. A lot of people are still scared of Crowley, it seems like his reputation puts them off the deck (from people I've spoken to about it, at least) which is a terrible shame.

I read the Book of Thoth as a 14 year old and kept it for 25 years or so because of the proposed curse for passing it on. It was fascinating as a child, but I eventually found the Marseille tarot and soon found my own way. My mother was infatuated with it. She was born in 1939. I chose an easier path, where I have an equal relationship with my cards.

Thanks Vincent, I agree that anyone interested in tarot should own a Thoth deck, if anything just for the art. I'm new to tarot and have purchased decks of different methods because once I feel that I've got a good grip on RWS, I want to explore others. My first Marseille, by the way is the Pitisci version. I chose it precisely for the reason that you stated, the color pallet. I couldn't resist and have been "playing" with it since I received, it calls to me . I truly appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge. Cheers to ya!

I love the art of the Thoth, and though I don't really use it, I do own it and I sometimes will flip through it or handle it. I think the main thing that puts me off is I find the extreme esotericism in the deck kinda exhausting (it's in the Waite-Smith too of course but it's more subtle and less intrusive in my opinion. And the Marseille even more so). It seems like why would one to two symbols do when you can cram in 30. It's almost a sensory overload. I love esotericism but the sheer amount of information I have to wade through in each card is sometimes really overwhelming. (I also find Crowley a little exhausting)

I watched a video (Tea and Tarot) about The Book of Thoth. He said he finds Crowley's mind claustrophobic, which made it a struggle for him to read the book.

I don't like the Thoth deck. I'm a Marseille lover. Just can't appreciate the art and design. Everyone finds their own decks. Thanks for this take on the Thoth.

I'm just learning and began with the Rider-Waite (Centennial) and will stick with it. But I find the Marseille do elegant and ancient feeling that I picked up a deck to hold on to until I feel ready to branch out.

The Thoth is very intense! I like it except those key words, they can easily draw our attention from the images, in my opinion, they shouldn’t be there. I do readings with it sometimes, but can’t follow Crowley’s method tho! He made it even harder for us 😆

I bought a thoth deck out of curiosity and I agree it does feel like 78 random pieces of art just stuck on cards. There is no cohesion to any of it and some of the art is just really not my thing. I do however like the Hermetic Tarot which is packed full of symbolism from the Golden Dawn but seems almost like something in between the RWS and the Thoth deck. It also is black and white so no issue with clashing palettes. I am actually thinking about customizing mine with my own color choices.

What helped me master this system was to remove the borders including the key words. Plus Thoth is very layered ie elements, astrology etc. Check out the Thoth Readers" Series videos by Tarot Oracle. These are the best for explaining the color palette of the cards. I love your videos and I have several of your books.

Vincent, I have had a Thoth deck for many years and have with it maybe a total of 3 or 4 times. The deck never seemed to feel right to me. It really never sp[ke to me as other decks have. Again, thanks for the insight. I think your right on. on this one.

I’m going to attempt to trim a Thoth in order to see how I read with it. Honestly without even including the bomb of information in the Book of Thoth, the titles of the cards do distract me. It’s very interesting.

    • @VPitisci
      @VPitisci  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

they make smaller versions of the Thoth deck if you are just trimming it for size you might want to look into another smaller deck. Just a thought. Thanks for watching my channel Anna!

@@edgarpringle3348 actually I agree with Anna. The words seem too constrictive to the depth of the card, and sometimes distracting. They don't always exactly match the meaning of the card, fully.
