Crowley had to go to court to publish this. Those in the Order of the Golden Dawn were under Oath not to publish the secrets of the Tarot. So, A.E. Waite deliberately corrupted the Rider deck so that he could publish the deck and yet, not break his Oath. Crowley won the right to publish the secrets...the Tarot in all it fullness and accuracy.

Thank you for the video. Crowley and R waite was part of same committee or council. Waite deck hide all symbolisms from people it may be visible to subconscious but in general it is a pictorial view and a story way. But Crowley opposed this and want to give all the minute symbolisms to public. So he had to quit the council and formed another and he worked on this deck. That is the reason the cards do not have fancy pictures like other deck. Crowley deck is very powerful and highly accurate reading.

I have never been much of a Crowley fan, idk what it is, he has said some wise things before but then there's something about his personality that just rubs me the wrong way, like he would have eventually become a cult leader if he didn't die when he did but maybe I'm just projecting on what I think he was like vs what he was actually like because I've only heard stories but so many of those stories just give me the heebie jeebies.
I only just bought a Thoth deck a few weeks ago though and couldn't believe the stunning imagery, it's like you're in a dream but knowing that he didn't actually draw or illustrate it himself brings me a weird sense of peace about using the deck

Since you asked for opinions on the deck: The Thoth is my favorite tarot deck. I love tarot in general, and I think I have upwards of 40 or 50 decks by now (I just seem to keep finding them on my shelf). But the Thoth is the only one I have 5 copies of... My first one was a Swiss size (blue box) that came with a book. The next two were what I consider medium size (purple box) which is generally the size I prefer. I've never been a fan of borders on cards, and while the Thoth borders do provide some good information, as long as you know how to read the cards you can find most of that information in them (With the general exception of the Hebrew letters... but I don't use those much in readings). I decided to buy a large style (green box like you have here) and trim the borders off of them. Then I painted the edges gold, and have done some work to consecrate this deck in my own practice. Trimmed, it's roughly the size of the purple box deck, which is ideal, but the art is larger and higher resolution, plus I don't have to be distracted by pesky borders anymore. Just today, I acquired an original U.S. printing from 1969, which is in remarkably good shape. I ain't gonna trim that one though... That would be sacrilege.
I love the colors, the rich symbolism and density, the movement as you describe, and just how adventurous the cards feel. I also really like that even though the minors don't have people, they still manage to convey a complex array of emotions and ideas in their designs. I mean, just looking at the 9 of Swords, you can pretty easily intuit what it might mean. I think the same can be said for most of the Majors too. I have actually handed a Thoth deck to someone who's never done a tarot reading and asked them to give it a shot, and they did a great job just intuitively guessing what the cards might mean - even if they weren't "super accurate", they got to the point of the cards, and the reading was still effective.
I want to love other decks as much as I love the Thoth, but it's just hard. You know, it's like it's already the perfect deck in my eyes, and other decks just seem to be missing something, even if they're gorgeous, or profound. I have yet to find a tarot deck I enjoy as much, and honestly I kind of like it that way.

I began with the Marseille deck. Moved on to the Etteilla and 1JJ Swiss. Found out about the Hermetic Tarot deck and started studying Golden Dawn. Briefly browsed the RWS and didn’t care much for it. Especially since A.E. Waite pretty much says in his book that the symbolism in his public deck is a blind to his true deck.(Not interested in being lied to).
Now I am working with the Thoth. I think I like the Marseille the best but the Thoth is growing on me.

Do what thou wilt....means to do your True Will, to fulfill that. That is the goal, to get in touch with your HGA and to discover what one's true will is. Glad you are a sane and intellectual reporter on Crowley...way too much gossip and crap about him.

Thanks for sharing your Thoths on this. Seriously though my favorite deck for years has been the Golden Dawn deck which I bought, oh some 30 years ago now. It is sort of in between Rider Waite and Thoth being a bit more symbol focused but now as Crowley influenced.

Strange - there are any amount of videos featuring people reading with the Ryder - Waite and the Marseille...even the Kier Egyptian deck...but I cannot find one single video of anyone reading with the Thoth....Lots of videos ( like this one ) talking about it....but absolutly no one demonstrating a reading with it.

I don't think I've ever seen a TH-cam tarot reader use this particular deck. My own favourites are RWS, Marchetti and the Swiss IJJ. I own this one but I've never connected with it to date - but lately, I've become something of a symbols detective.

    Some thoughts on the Law:
"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. Love is the law - Love under will." The concept of "what thou wilt" is (as you note) commonly misconstrued as "do whatever you want". As you mentioned your friend, the Lodge master described to you, the core concept in here that's sort of implicit was once described to me as "my freedom to throw a punch ends at your freedom to not be punched". This gets complicated, for sure, which is why "Love is the law" is a crucial part of this. It's not (exclusively) about hedonism and indulgence. In Crowley's magical system, number correspondences play a big role. Words are translated into their numeric equivalents using a form of Gematria derived from (but different from) the Hebrew style. I believe that the Greek Gematria is used for the word Thelema, which translates to the number 93. The word Agape (one of the Greek words for love) also translates to 93. In this way, Thelemites and Crowleyites tend to believe that these words share a common spirit. The same can be said for any words that share a common value. 93 goes much further than these two words, but it would take too long to go into here. The point is, love and will are intertwined, and should be considered together. Implicit in that are things like consent, peace, connection, construction, and so on. These are the tenets upon which the Law of Thelema is most usually interpreted. I'm not a Thelemite, but I tend to think that's a pretty good way to live your life. The other thing I've heard about the Law is that "your Will" is not necessarily what you "want", but rather, what you are guided toward doing. Following your "true will" is a common theme in Thelema.

And the comment? That is easy, and Hadit burning in your heart shall make swift and secure thy pen. In SIMPLE ENGLISH GEMATRIA the 2 words, "The Word" equals 93. 93! thank you Scarlet.

Actually, the creedo means do what is the will of your true self, higher self for lack of a better word. It's more than the New Age higher self. It's the divine self. So it's unlikely that you will go do whatever you want. If you want to hurt people it's probably not the divine self.

Hi, thanks for this informative video. I started studying the Thoth deck this month and I'm working with one of the smaller, non-English versions I picked up on my travels a while ago. I'd like to get a larger version in English, and I love the copy you have because it appears to not have white borders on the card backs. Is it a recent copy of the US Games large version or something else? Or perhaps you trimmed off that white border? Now I'm thinking that's the way to go. :)
