Not sure how I'd describe it genre wise, but I was really impressed by it and would be interested to get your perspective as a drummer but also as a black metal fan.
Dude you should react to the band Loathe and their song New Faces In The Dark. They're an up and coming metalcore band from the UK. But they can get EXTREMELY HEAVY but whenever they have clean parts they sound a lot like Deftones. Amazing band tho

I saw these guys open for Whitechapel a couple years ago. They were super fantastic and better than most of the bands that followed.
The explanation the drummer himself gave for the inverted grip is pretty simple: he said his sticks kept breaking with the standard grip.
