His insane speed double base kicks definitely IS a heel toe (technique). No magic in there or some "tech" behind it. Pure skill

I used to drum tech so stuff like that sticks out like a sore thumb to me. But I never saw it much, and I LOVE this guy's playing style.
The Vilyn yea I think he does it to help with his blast beats when he uses the push pull technique because the butt of the sticks are slightly heavier so it gives him a better fulcrum point to pull off the fast blast beats when he isn’t using gravity blasts
When I played drums , I played with mine backwards, but I’m so old I started doing it because I found out Dave Grohl while he was in Nirvana played with his sticks backwards lol

I've been playing for about 25 years, and my (un)professional opinion is that this guy isn't using studio tricks with his kick techniques. He's just that much better than the rest of us. I'm also glad that someone noticed him turning his sticks around backwards. That was something that I used to do just starting out because I was a kid (and poor) and I couldn't afford to waltz into my local music store on a whim and stock up on 5Bs. Little did I know what it would end up costing me in heads. Lol
In any case, Evgeny Novikov is a fucking maniac behind a kit, and he deserves every bit of recognition he gets. His old band, Katalepsy, is also off the hook. Give them a listen if you ever get the chance.
back in 2012 my band and i were practicing in a rehearsal complex, where Evgeny was working as an admin/host. every time i saw him - he was practicing. like 24/7 practice. i didnt ever see him without sticks in the hands. in 2012 he already was an absolute beast, he was playing in Katalepsy. remembered that, when you told that his double bass is effortless :D
He's definitely doing the most effortless heel-toe you've ever seen and later he does an even more effortless swivel in the breakdown

Also, this guy beats his drums like they kidnapped his family.
Klayton’s Celldweller works are still so fun to listen to! And yeah, I can’t imagine how much Evgeny goes through cymbals and heads.

Yeah Evgeny has a pretty amazing grasp of heel/toe and swivel techniques. Great groove too
when this came out, i set myself a five year deadline to nail this song on drums myself.
Needless to say I am not quite there yet. The fluidity behind his plays is insane. Still its THAT extreme skill and effortlessness that made me fall in love with it, and its why I set this specific song as my Benchmark. Was really inspiring to me.

ive seen a few vids from friends that have seen them in concert while touring the world and the way he drums looks like he is not hitting the instruments that hard its absurd how well and effortlessly he makes it look
Yes it’s heel-toe, alternated really well between his 2 feet. To attain those crazy speeds without destroying your legs the most common techniques I’ve seen are the Heel-toe, or the swivel method that someone like George Kollias uses. I’m sure there are others but they’re not as common

Ahhhhh! nice Fear Factory at the end of the video. Raymond Herrera was the first drummer I heard as a kid who did intricate double bass work and that got me into Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve because I needed MORE!

Would say that most pro players use triggers, with a mic in / at the bass drum, just for pure mixing. - mic at bass drum for the sound stage, and the tricker to make it "pop". Another part might be the pedal. "Trick" pedals with heavy boards and really stiff spring with a direct link, makes you able to convert a lot of small movement to a way higher output on the drum.
His heel toe technique is absolutely ridiculous it's like a roll lots of practice to do it that effortlessly the first time I actually heard him drum I actually thought it was a double kick single paddle too I was very surprised that he actually manually did this with two kicks he's definitely a beast
Definitely him playing that. When I do speed stuff like that, I do some heel-toe and I also swing my legs sometimes for a little extra speed. Does like a little roll in the middle of the double bass. And you can buy those masks on Etsy.

He is doing the heal-toe tech but there is also an old drum system from 2015 to help you improve your foot control and it was called "Ballistic Drumming" made by Joe Stronsick i played drums from 1997-2009
Agony, Hell and Chronic Slaughter are the next 3 u need to hear from Slaughter to Prevail. I have never been a fan of deathcore but for me this band is perfect the more i listen to them the more I love them. New subscriber btw I am liking the reactions I have seen so far which is just Hypa Hypa and this one

Probably not its a cool video but nothing groundbreaking or reactionworthy. Unless u do a review of the song and breakdown the lyrics or instrumentals or something like that there won't be much to go on also have u seen any of Alex Terrible 's (Slaughter to Prevail's vocalist) covers if not u should check out his Chandelier - Sia cover or the Bad Guy - Billie Eillish cover
The upside down sticks give you more weight to strike with, when doing gravity blast it gives you more control and more "bounce". I play upside down sticks 90% of the time.

Most drummers use heel toe or swivel techniques. But his posture is the most important part of the sense of ease he plays with. Great posture

This is the only video I’ve seen of yours (great stuff btw.) but if you haven’t check out Chris Turner of Oceans Ate Alaska you definitely should. I see a lot of comments about heel toe, but Chris uses his hips and thigh muscles to generate speed and power in his double kicks. Also his personal style and musicianship on the drum set is just fun to watch.

Heel-toe it is. It is a bass drum technique that the great Steve Gadd was first credited using. He was a tap dancer and in tap dancing the heel-toe method is one of the most common steps you learn.
Never heard the term "gravity blast" before when describing the single stroke roll w/one hand. Ian Paice used the one handed double-stroke rolls during his drum solos as well as the late great Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson and Steve Smith (to name a few). Play smarter, not harder! :)
Also... Vinnie Paul held his sticks this way as well.... they were carved for grip.
it's like a modified heel toe, shorter pedals it's kinda more of a walk if that makes sense, or like a hollow heel. probably also the height of his thrown, perfect positioning so he's not straining himself.
U think the "hidden lead" is actually present in the final mix, but it's covered by Alex's vocals. He doesn't shut up even for a split second during that part

lastly, as a wannabe part time (non practiced) drummer and background film/content maker and editor myself…some parts of this look sped up to me. the ease and flow looks so quick and smooth to my eye.
but hey, that’s just my 2¢…which are not worth much as is. lol
Beautiful technique! Yes, Tank. Heel-toe, as some others have mentioned is pretty much industry standard these days. It is generally played on long board foot pedals (as seen here). It is basically the same concept as double stroke hand technique. This allows the heel to initiate the first strike of the beater and the toe deflects the rebound back to the head once more. This guy may be one of the smoothest I have heard. The nice thing is his dynamic control with his feet. The difference between good and great is a drummer who does not automatically crescendo (get louder) when they speed up. Or, for example, their single stroke footwork is always louder than their doubles (heel/toe). The other thing to notice is good posture on the stool, and he keeps his shoulders out of his playing. This leads to efficiency and stamina! This guy has it all. :) He better. It's pretty hard to breath in a mask (Just ask Jay Weinberg . . lol), so his playing better be minimal effort from great technique. :) Thanks and Keep up the interesting videos!

I know you've had several comments on his pedal technique but I'm gonna comment anyway, it seems like it is a double stoke heel toe technique most likely using hight tension with a heavy beater so it is a fairly hard technique to get to this level but his pedal seems to be doing most of the work. It's insane none the less and it was a great reaction. Keep it up 👍🏻

It's a trigger. He is really playing that speed, however the trigger allows the low effort kicks to sound louder.
Yes! Was going to point that out, but figured I'd see if anyone else noticed. Also it was/is heal to toe technique being used being used.
its absurd to not use triggers in metal at that speed(impossible to get smooth and even sound), saw his interview the guy said he is using heal toe technique for 7+ years or so.

It's heel-toe technique, fantastic obviously, but they are triggered, so he doesn't have to actually hit them hard at all for a good sound to come out. This is impossible without triggers, but that doesn't take anything away from this at all. There are people out there that are anti-trigger or whatever, it's dumb. What's the end of that kind of reductive thinking? Whacking a couple of rocks together?
My former drummer used to use this technique aswell. He had to put more effort in, but he reached same speed levels as this guy, but we didn't trigger it. Sounded great anyways ^^
he has mounted triggers (single strike), but he has turned the heel toe into an arch toe. its honestly harder to play with mounted triggers, because you have to be perfect.

Yup just practice and a lot of burning shins at first...his pedals also help he has that foreign named pedal thats like axis and trick pedal that's really helps his speed

Last I spoke to him its the trick dominators is his weapon of choice
It is a heel toe, when you drop your heel down and push with the ball of your foot, the spring lifts it back up. Practice and time this perfectly and you can turn it into a drum roll or like pedaling a bike on the flat, once you get started it almost does it on its own.

TankTheTech haha! I don’t know drums at all actually, my buddy plays and explained it to me a couple years ago when I asked how he got so fast. He said he switched his technique and this was it!

Double strokes on the kicks. That takes a while to perfect. Alex Grind from Despised Icon does it, Austin Archey from Lorna Shore. Double stroke kicks is something I was never able to perfect. That shit is hard as fuck.
