    First off, funny skit.
Just so nobody leaves here thinking his is actually a valid criticism of 18th century armies though, imma rant a bit.
Flags and regimental standards play a really important battlefield role in command and control in any 18th century army. For starters, when you've got 600-1000 guys attempting to maintain a half decent battlefield formation (you don't want guys getting too far in front getting hit by friendlies, or guys too far back hitting friendlies) having a big fucking flag saying "form the line here" helps a lot.
Secondly, these battlefields often got smokey as all hell. Visibility often goes to shit after a few minutes because gun powder creates a ton of smoke, and there's a lot of dudes shooting. So for a general, the ability to figure out where his units actually are through all that shit is really important, and the ability to figure out which are which is also really helpful. These people don't have radios to report their position to command, so flags really are one of the best ways for a commander to have any idea what the fuck is going on when shit starts flying.
As to the idea that a standard bearer needs a gun, two things to consider. 1: there are 600-1000 other guys with guns in his regiment. His one more firearm ain't tipping the firepower balance.
    2. He's surrounded by some of the baddest motherfuckers in the regiment. The NCOs responsible for guarding the regimental colors are usually a bunch of pipe hitting veterans who know their business very well. This guy has a better bodyguard setup than most of the officers in his regiment.
TLDR: flags are super useful, and the colors are incredibly well protected on the battlefield.

Well the standard bearer was really important in terms of units and armies since they helped keep the men in a unit together and knowing where the rest of their allies are. It also allows the commander to know where all of his units are on the field and make decisions. The drummer at the end was also really important as their tempo helped keep the men moving at the same speed and moving in formation. Both of these posts were vital for the victory of armies from the ancient world all the way to the late 19th century.

Marching and drumming into battle like big loud doofs, making themselves big bright red targets for the natives to shoot arrows and poison darts at from the bushes. Then they had to re-assess that whole brilliant "look at me, here I am!" strategy.
-And actually, that's how the Irish FINALY took back ROI, too. The Colonizers marching around like they own the place. Burning down houses. Ok, then. We'll hide in the bushes and ambush you to stop you coming in and killing us. G'wan, keep holding up the flag and announcing your presence.

    • @gengis737
      @gengis737 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Nothing of the sort. To take an enemy flag was direct path to promotion, so when a regiment scattered any ennemy, especially the horsemen, would go straight to the flag bearer to cut him down and get the trophy - provided there were not too many men rallied around the flag.
Drummer, as unarmed men, were usually spared, all the more because being in the back line when fighting got real, they had plenty of time and space to escape.

"the flag would be the regiments colours, which would include the cap badge of the regiment and its battle honours." The standard bearer was just below officer, and it was an important position before rifles.
A unit has to stick together, or they will be picked off one by one. The flag is what the unit rallies around so they can keep protecting each other even as the enemy breaks their ranks.
So the standard bearer is protected by his unit, and doesn't have to do any of the actual murdering himself. (Contrary to war propaganda, it is much easier to die than to kill, which should be obvious if you look at what percentage of people die compared to how many are murderers.) And that made it a coveted position.
Of course, rifles changed all that. Rifles are what defines modern warfare. Now there are no standard bearers anymore, no flags on the battlefield, and no officers charging into battle ahead of their men secure in the knowledge that no commoner can touch them.

@@SamFAHntha Just the Little Drummer Boy idea I mentioned above... and/or a duel between Hargreaves and Hullington where they are armed with the flag and the drum/drumsticks respectively. Maybe *while* the battle is going on, for maximum chaos 😜 And they somehow manage to dodge all the bullets and cannonballs by lucky coincidences of timing!

As I was watching it, I was thinking that the style of orders have not changed over the centuries. I know plenty of corporate bosses who would treat their employees the same way. Give them an impossible task to do that will ruin their personal reputation but pretend it is for the benefit of their careers. And of course, if the employee fails, he will take the blame.

Running a corporation like the military is a really bad idea. And also not at all uncommon.
