    Yes! This is a reupload from about 4 months ago. I've recently had issues with TH-cam Editor and this video got affected in a weird way. Not many people saw this video either and thought it could be of some serious value to some. 10 min drawings are super powerful if you make it a consistent practice.

    One of my favourite things to watch here on youtube is artist trying something new and showing their process, especially if their first tries ...aren't great. No one's are when they first start something, honestly. I found your work literally yesterday from Jess Karp's channel. So happy to have found another down to earth artist to watch!

    Cool. The vine charcoal was nice. You should play with the ink more too.

    I have recently gotten back into doing caricatures. This is something that really hones your skills if you do it with the intent of making it really look like the person. Some artists do a facsimile of more cartoon style, which to me doesn’t count. But what I’m trying to get to here is that even a caricature takes 20 minutes to get something that looks like the person. And even on some occasions 25 minutes. So while the 10 minute sketch might get you to notice the key elements of a person’s face, you may still struggle to get the actual likeness down. More than likely the quick time limit will result in cartoon-ish faces.
    Not trying to discourage the time limit, just want you to maybe think in terms of time verses likeness. I know that when I do caricatures, I can get better results in 20 minutes, and found that the people will stand in line to wait for what I can produce.
    This is most definitely a good way to exercise your skills. I spend hours upon hours doing this at shows, when I’m not doing my other art. Would love to see the progress!❤❤

    Being that you're an east coastie, I'd love to see you take a dive through the national gallery down in DC. Would love to see some of your interpretations on some of those amazing pieces of art - especially given your creative spin on just about everything you do! Really loving the latest content slew - keep on rocking man!

    Yo, Slew! I like the way you attack your drawings, don’t get bogged down in self criticism, keep a positive attitude, and just “get ‘er done”. Always inspiring.

    I'm definitely down for longer video content! I don't see enough of you these days! Where did you get your board straight posture? That's impressive! 💜

    I love it! I know your not going for the anime look BUT I am and this actually may help me. I don't know what you edited to get the look but it feels like the kind comic ilustrater may use to take a real person into comic or anime style.

    This is a good idea. A while ago I did pairs of eyes and many of them. I noticed as I did each one I saw new things with better control of the pencil. If I do this I don’t think I’d time it until I’ve got it down. That way I can learn what I see, but I did enjoy this! Thank you.

    This is great! So good to see all the process from good to bad to medium. I am no good at drawing people but wondered why you don't start with plotting out the face shape and eye line nose line etc for your faces? I would have thought that would help with getting likeness down. Interested to hear whether this is the best way to go or not.

    This is a fantastic idea! 10mins every day, for a year, then compare your progress at the end of the year. Does seeing the time distract you or help you?

    Hey Slew- Great video, as always. Question- I can see that you sketched the facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) before the head shape in the first couple of drawings, but then sketched the head shape before the features in other sketches. Do you always mix it up or do you have a preference in terms of your approach? Thanks, bud!

    • @slewp
      @slewp  ปีที่แล้ว

      For this video specifically I wanted to start the portraits in different ways! There’s no right way to start. I just wanted to challenge myself and switch up the process :)

    • @TheMark180
      @TheMark180 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@slewp Love it! I know I'm "supposed" to start with head shape, but for some reason, I feel like my portraits come out better when I begin with the eyes and nose and work my way outwards. Anyway, thanks for the reply and keep killing the content. Love everything you post.

    Maybe you could try a version of this where you could start with a layer of charcoal and use an eraser to carve out a portrait. this was one of my favorite thing to do in my 2D foundations class back in college.

    Ths is great!!,, in this age of realistic protrait drawing(aka tracing the basic shape or draw a 1x1 grid) you are still doing it old way like the real masters. Goid job and keep it up 🎉🎉

    Realism art is amazing, but I don’t think everything artists draw have to be 100% like the reference. It’s cool to see someone take a reference and make it their own. 😊
