    I just wanted to tell you how impressed I am with whoever is doing your camera work and editing. There is nothing amateurish about it. This is good professional work. I really enjoy watching you work with the mill and the other things that you're doing around the place with your family. Earlier this morning I watched you take that one last cut into that log with heart rot.. and I was thinking 'no.. I don't think you should..' Good call on your part! I got goose bumps when you slid that sawn piece off the top. I would never have thought that one more slice could have made that big a difference. You have a good life. I hope you and your wife and kids are still there living it 50 years from now!

    I live in Utah. We don't have goldenrod, but we have a goldenrod cousin -- rabbit brush. Your "dirty socks" description fits. It's why I harvest in August and leave the rabbit brush honey for the bees. They get tons of pollen from it too.
    Last fall, another beekeeper called me asking why his honey smelled and tasted so bad. I told him rabbit brush. He asked, what do I do with this stuff? I answered, "You can cook with it or you can give it to somebody you don't like. Next year, harvest in August."

    Really nice hive you have there, bit touchy but better bee's for being that way. Lovely watching them fly out at such a rate, bless them. First swarm I caught this year were real touchy, but have calmed down a lot now, but given it was there first year they are such good workers I had around 5 liters of honey can't complain about that.

      @@falllineridge Thanks was pretty amazed and chuffed they did so well. That bee that wouldn't leave you alone, my hive known as the Psycho's because of their attitude problem, have calmed down no end and all the other hives are the same although wasn't as ill tempered as the Psycho's and I put this down to the fact I visit them everyday sometimes 2-3 times a day and just watching them come and go in front of the hives. I'm sure the bee's get used to me doing this and don't see me as a threat, but I could be wrong, just my little theory.

    Hey from NC, I’ve enjoyed your videos on honey bees. What do you use to treat for mites in your colonies?

    • @falllineridge
      @falllineridge  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been using Mite Away Quick Strips (now it's called Formic Pro) for years, but switched to oxalic acid vaporization recently. Not much experience with it yet, but my non scientific observations tell me that the results are good. The formic works great, but tends to be harsh on the bees, especially when the weather is at the upper end of the temperature limit.

    How do you store empty honey frames during fall and winter, to avoid wax moth damage?

    • @falllineridge
      @falllineridge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I leave boxes on the hives. If the hive is strong enough, they will take care of the moths. It works pretty good in my area because it does not get cold for extended periods of time, so the bees are able to break cluster frequently to police the hive. When it does get down to freezing, the empty boxes freeze too, which kills any pests that might be there.

      One got me on my hand at 7:33. I have gloves, but they are thick and get in the way. When gloves get in the way, that can agitate them more because of rough handling. It is much gentler on them just to go barehanded. Usually don't get very many stings.
