      Honey makes a fantastic, healthier, replacement for sugar when baking also.
      The refined white sugar used by everyone pretty much, is not a healthy product, go for demerara sugar which a a dark brown and you have something healthier. Honey is a very healthy natural sweetener.

    Now I'm curious what some honey produced by a hive near arbutus trees would taste like.
    The arbutus tree is local for my area and is a flowering fruit tree that is known to attract bees.
    If you have dry, sandy soil in an exposed area you might have the conditions to grow them, if you can source seedlings or saplings. They do make a very nice finishing detail hardwood ( a brittle hardwood so not good for structural use ) but are not a widespread species of tree so unlikely to ever find it available.

    In France there is a small department called Ardèche, where i found probably the best chestnut honey in Europe, produced by small artisans like you. I don't know anything about american honey, of course i'm from center of france ! Here the chesnut honey is litteraly black . With a super powerful taste, perfect with a slice of rye bread !!

    A man of your talents and you're using a wobbly folding table for your extractor? I'd have thought that you would have made a sturdy wooden stand to secure it while you are spinning. Also, isn't it a 4 frame extractor?

    Cool stuff! We grew up next door to an old retired plumber from Oklahoma back in the 70’s as a young boy that had 7 or 8 hives going always. Once I put on the suit to help rob the bees as he put it the video sound took me back. Thanks for that I did once only because the sound was so intense my brother help all the time. His pay was 1 quart some of the best breakfast I remember had fresh honey all over our toast/biscuits. Store bought honey has an after taste compared to fresh honey. Is there anyway to buy a quart from you?

    Good job on the comb honey that is my absolute favorite. I think it tastes better. I don't know why, maybe because extractor honey is whipped? That's why I want to taste Flow Hive honey to see if it is more like comb honey in the taste department.

    Darkness of the honey has more to do with the flowers the bees pollinate at the time of the year. Buckwheat honey is way darker than clover honey. Some fruit flower honey is lighter.

    HI! Question for you. What is the white bucket you use to fill up your jars? The one with the opening you push to the side? Is that easy to transfer from a 5 gallon bucket that's been through the strainer or is it going from the extractor then through the strainer and into the same container? Thanks for the great videos! I am a new bee keeper and trying to learn about equipment I should acquire for honey extraction. I just have 2 hives and keeping it economical. That container makes it look pretty easy to pour into jars.

    • @falllineridge
      @falllineridge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a honey bucket. The spout is called a honey gate. I got it off of Amazon. You can both store the honey in there and also use it to fill jars. I would encourage you to spend the money to get one. It's a nightmare filling jars without one.

    Why don't you use Queen excluders to prevent brood in the upper boxes? I always used them on top of the brood box, the bottom box . My honey extraction was much cleaner.

    • @falllineridge
      @falllineridge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just consider it one more piece of equipment to deal with, so I don't bother. Did you notice it affecting your yield at all?

    • @jameshaynie4570
      @jameshaynie4570 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@falllineridge no I didn't , if there was any difference it was miniscule. I wouldn't run a hive without one, it keeps all the brood in the brood box where it belongs. I didn't have to look for new queen cells all through the hive and it was easier to track the health of the hive.

    Surprised that you only got 125 lbs out of 9 supers, you are only averaging around 1.5 lb per frame. I'm wondering if you are giving a lot back to the hives? With that many hives you may want to step up to a radial with some power.

    • @falllineridge
      @falllineridge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was a little disappointed too. Not all of the boxes were full. It was probably the equivalent of 3-4 mostly full boxes. It was easier to just grab the whole box off the hive and pick through when I got back to the shop.
