- About 6 months ago I got a call from someone who wanted me to restore something for them. Obviously I couldn't say no to a piece like this, but it was pretty daunting. It took me months to finish restoring this slot machine, but it's finally done and edited.
Anyway, I learned a lot restoring this old slot machine and I'm really happy I took this challenging project on. There will be a part 2 coming up pretty soon here that focuses solely on the restoration of the mechanism inside. It turned out to be way too much to cram into one video. I have almost 1tb of footage stored on my server for this project alone...

It is harder to write assembly instructions than it is to design the thing that you are writing the instructions for.

You're right, "every single tiny little screw and piece had to go back together" as intended for the machine to function properly. I love technical videos like this b/c it points out one clear fact; that in some arenas you can't simply invent your own means, and/or ignore the truth w/o consequences. That fact is no more *true and crucial* than the eternal consequences of ignoring Gods warnings re: mocking Jesus Christ. I hope you consider this "truth."

Someone designed this in the 20s or 30s with a pencil, a few drafting tools, and paper. Lots of paper.
Its a mechanical marvel. Im in awe of its complexity
It's not much more complicated than a carnival automaton or fancy pocket watch of the period. Mills Novelty Co. and O.K. Vender probably hired watch makers to design and build the machines. Still, not something I could attempt even with today's technology.
While the modern thing we have now are amazing, things like this seem so much more impressive to me. How do you design and build this w/o computers? It really is amazing this was built in the 30s.
I did that once, whilst jobbing in the banking sector becoming increasingly frustrated with a secondary network system programme I sat there in my lunchbreak and doodled up a complete new system that could insert itself on top of the old system and all on a notepad and pen. Even today I doodle and write kinda flowcharts for projects and important things and lots of postit notes as my memory has become very poor in older age, I couldn't code my way out of a wet paper bag these days :(

All WW2 planes were designed only with paper and mechanical calculators that made only the four foundamental operations; what I find even more astonishing ois that the Concorde has been designed only on paper, using early computers as big as rooms to make some of the most complex aerodynamic's calculations
@@XMarkxyz In the late 70's I took Drafting in VoTech School my Junior and Senior year. Our teacher was a retired Draftsman from Lockheed. We started with the basics. By the end of the two years any kid in that class could layout a gear tooth profile or a thread profile. We learned the basics. I got back into it in the mid 90's when it had changed to computers. All I needed was to learn how to make the computer software do what I wanted it to do. My first CAD instructor, took a 3D CAD class with me and I ended up tutoring her. All a computer does is to speed up changes and repetive tasks. If you don't know what you are drawing a computer isn't going to help you.

MILD??? I can do clean up and detail work but I always manage to have extra hardware or holes when I'm done. Even with video.
Even more astounding , before he began the reassembly he lined the massive multi hundreds of parts up in order on his work bench. Three thumbs up!!
Some people just take everything apart. I would take remove core components and work on them one at a time. Break it down into smaller restorations.
Just incredible. I would never get that back together once I’d taken it apart.
The trick is to make sure you have pictures/video of each step of disassembly or you'd probably have parts left over, and we all know what that means.

He probably takes images/video of all the parts before he does that so he can play it in reverse to get a idea on how it goes back. Good trick even in electronics.

I’ve been a slot technician for a good amount of years now and this was pretty neat to watch. The oldest games we have are IGT S2000 at around 20 years old. Nothing we have uses coin anymore, but I’ve heard horror stories

@@psirvent8 coin in jams were the most common issue. The jet sorting machines for these coins were causing people to go deaf. The drop team’s hands were blacker than a mechanic’s due to the metal dust. If you stuck your hand in the hopper they would come out black from the dust. It was impossible to keep those machines clean back in the day

People are so quick to replace a broken part but fail to realise that part has a single broken or worn part that is cheaper than the whole unit.
Carbon brushes in a motor for example.

I spent a year working under Dick DeLong, of RS DeLong carvings, restoring antique slot machines. It was a great experience and I had an amazing time working on the old machines. You did an excellent job on the old Mills. Nice work!

Like everyone else, I'm in awe of your ability to actually put this thing back together again. I think I'd still have trouble with a full schematics and the original designer helping me out.
And I love the high attention to detail with the paint and all the sticker and card designs - keeping it as true to the original as you could. Just beautiful.
Brings back some really wonderful childhood memories. I spent many hours with my grandfather at the antique fairground he hobbied at... the machines there ran on 2 pence pieces for the most part - some were 1p and a precious few were a whole 5p! I never did quite figure out what the blue fruits are. Perhaps they’re plums, faded by age? I’ll never know. Just seeing this unrestored machine brought a happy smile to my face, I’ve yet to watch the video through. Let’s see whether your restoration surpasses my grandfather’s!

As it turns out "chute" is a more common spelling but "shute" is also used. Maybe the reason for the variation is that I am an Australian english speaker and we have evolved our own dialects. When people learn English as a second language in England or North America they are often confounded by the different language in Oz.

Back in my pinball machine days, the coin acceptor would test diameter, thickness, weight and magnetism, in that order. The magnet might be missing, it was optional in countries where iron might be used in legit coins.
In the US, we had steel pennies during WWII to save copper. Maybe it was a penny machine upgraded to nickels but they had removed the magnet during WWII?
A penny in 1933 would be the equivalent of 15¢ today.
Back in around 1988 I went to a school in Vegas to learn how to repair these! I work as a heavy equipment mechanic though, too much of bad stuff in Vegas then.
Lot of stuff back then was nickle plated..
Came here because I've always wanted to build my own mechanical slot machine and couldn't find a video on how they work (all you ever find is people telling you they know how to cheat the system and win big in a casino). Even though the mechanism isn't shown in this video, I really enjoyed it. Very faithful restoration with almost every original part saved. That is wonderful. Can't wait for the mechanism restoration!

Well...the only discernable difference between us is that you have nine pairs of vice grips while I only have two! Seriously, did you have a schematic to follow or did you simply rely on your native genius (or both)? This is one of the finest restorations and displays of mechanical design, function, and understanding I have ever seen. Beautiful work at every turn....best to you and stay healthy.

I think the part at 42:30 is a probably space for a coin sorter so if you put in something that wasn't a nickle it would drop it out of the machine.

Yep, it was called the slug remover. It came about around in the 1920s when people would use slugs, or even strings tied to coins. I even heard of people pouring oil or hot salt water to trick the machines.
@@thisolesignguy2733 "Stringing," "Spooning," "Rhythm Play," "Drilling," "Handle-slamming," liquid detergent, slugs, foreign coins, magnets--the list goes on and on. It was a constant technical battle between the cheaters and the operators--who sometimes had a few tricks of their own.
This one has a wooden case without the hanging or floating armor plates to deter drilling.
See Scarne's "Complete Guide to Gambling" (1961) or Ortiz, "Gambling Scams" (1984).
Wow, what a project! These machines were state-of-the art for their time. They were not toys. They were designed to function through 100k's of spins, and even had rudimentary features to deter cheaters. My grandfather had a similiar one in his tavern. He used to give me a handful of nickels to play it, and I could keep what I won, unless I hit the jackpot, which went back into the till! I had one of these apart once, and from the number of symbols vs the paytable, I worked out that the machine held about 30% for the house!
In the beginning, I was like, “Yeah, that’s way too complicated for me to ever try”. And here you make it look so simple. Great outcome. Looks beautiful.

That questioned piece at 42 min ... is it magnetic? might be "slug stop" . saw something like that in a pop machine
Fantastic restoration well done great job ~ just an observation the three felt washers @ 43:00 should have been on the head of the screws with the washer and not on the other side.

That was an amazing restoration. Is it just me or did the the coin box not look as restored as the rest of the slot machine? Looking forward to the part where you restore the mechanism.
I am freaking impressed. The effort that went into the design and manufacture of this machine given the level of technology when it was made. Then throw in your ability to disassemble, clean, restore and reassemble this machine is just plain nuts. I design machinery for a living and know how complex things can become. I have subscribed to only three other TH-cam sites. You are number four. I'm looking forward to looking at past restorations and new ones as they come along.
I was recently gifted this exact same slot machine by my grandparents. Great restoration, now I have something to refer to as I attempt to restore mine.
Bravo!!! I am restoring an old 1956 Genco "Silver Chest", that is severely rusted. Could you kindly post in the description what products (chemicals) you used during this restoration? I am especially in need of some good rust remover!!! (Frozen / seized Mechanisms)
EvapoRust! I see lots of channels using it plus it's safe to use.
@@CraigH999 I have tried that.... It was only about 60 % effective. Next up i am going to try a Muric acid bath for 30 minutes and see what happens.
Could use electrolysis.
I would guess the large "mystery" part would likely for some States/Counties to have stamped licence/inspection information into (or be replaced with a State provided plate) which may or may not have been done depending on the specific state/location the machine was located in.

Зачем фотографировать, если он весь процесс снимал на видео. Плюс к этому своеобразная раскладка всех комплектующих в том порядке в котором разбираешь. Сам когда то работал часовым мастером - сложности были в основном в первый месяц, все приходит с опытом до автоматизма. Но все таки думаю, что у автора есть определенные навыки и задатки конструктора, механика, понимание в работе различных механизмов.

No, not a slug trap. At 42:36 this is an Award Token dispenser. On some machines there was a symbol on each reel that if you got all three, instead of a payout, you would get an award token that could be exchanged for cash or prize depending on the location.
