Sony for life! I made the switch from Canon years ago and have never looked back. So much better for video with tools like, zebras, flat profiles, focus peaking, EVF, etc.
Dont forget to convert your color spaces/gammas nondestructively using aces or colorspace transform.
The a7iii is the first Sony camera that has even remotely tempted me. It seems they have fixed 90% of the issues I had with the a7sii...

It's definitely got it's quirks, but the autofocus and low light over my gh5 and the dynamic range boost over our 5d mkiv and 1dx mkii make it probably my favorite camera to use. Not necessarily the one I use most often, but I think it probably produces the best overall finished product images of all of our SLR style cameras. I've actually done a few dynamic range tests against a red dragon and it's honestly really impressive how close it gets for a $2000 camera.
I'm waiting for the A7siii to be released and see if it's worth trading in my gear for that one. then Nikon D850 will be replaced with A7Riii
With Sony's you can get the play memories APP on your camera and phone/tablet and use that as a wireless external monitor and remote. It just takes some time to initiate every time you turn on the camera. Hope that helps!
The Autofocus is still a dealbreaker for me. With Canon your "I'm in Focus" hit rate is just better 🙂

Honestly it’s not, coming from a canon 80D and a 5DM3, the Sony A73s autofocus is just as good when using Sony lenses. I haven’t had the chance to play w/ the 5dm4. The Cannons menus and tap to focus work better but that’s about it. I find the Sony face detect to be faster and more accurate on the Sony as well.

For Low-Budget monitoring you can also pair it to your phone through WiFi and mount the phone on a hot-shoe mount. A bit of a kludge but it works. Or a small monitor on a hot-shoe mount? Cages add weight (but look cool). I like to use my phone on my lap, or anywhere handy out of the shot, as a remote too.

The addition of a flip lcd not only helps bloggers but it also helps solo shooters or one person operations to make sure the composition is correct and to make sure that you are in focus. Anybody who thinks having a flip lcd will allow down their workflow is an idiot. If you don't need it don't use but don't knock others for wanting a simple addition that can help alot more videographers.

Question: There is some kind of a haze in your latest videos. It was with 6d mark ii too. Is there a problem with the nd filter? I am not talking about focus or out of focus. I am talking about sometimes it is really not sharp. Like in 09:10
It's the variable ND i suspect. It's made worse on wider angle lenses (two polarizers that work together to reduce amount of light.) I'm not sure what variable ND he's got with that, but I recently picked up a VND where that does NOT happen. It's designed by a CSA DP and it's cheaper than the tiffen and hoya's surprisingly. Huge side effect of a lot of VND's is color shifting and that graduated vignetting/x pattern depending how you have it positioned. Sharpness is another factor of cheaper VND's. Sorry I know you didn't want a whole essay on them ,but i did a pretty comprehensive test review of that SIMMOD one and it's just blown me away in terms of all the problems it remedies from regular VND's.

Be sure to setup a button to change from full frame to crop mode. Really no issue with video, and it extends the zoom range of your lenses! Check your Face priority and focus speed settings too. The times it defocused really shouldn’t have been an issue for the camera, but it happens with anything of course.
If you find a setup that’s a front facing camera I would love a video for it because the LCD is at this point the _only_ complaint I have about my Sony!

However yeah, would appreciate to know a better on the go solution.
Or just get a small monitor, there’s tons of both affordable and expensive options. Problem solved! However I’m guilty of putting away the a7iii and using my 80D for front facing stuff still so I get it. Actually you can even use your phone as a monitor.

I have made a very simple and sturdy mirror assembly that attaches to my a6000 metal case with 1 screw. Different then all the crap solutions on TH-cam.
It works very well and was very easy to make. I'll post a video about it in 2 weeks.. unable now. Sorry.. i don't have any videos online yet.. so don't shoot the beginner if you see it

I went for a more video oriented hybrid camera and got the A7III. Preordered and I'm stoked I did! Coming from Canon 6D for photos. No complaints here (minus the glass switchover!)
Sony's cameras are so temping it's painful. I'm holding out of the rumoured A7SII to replace my SII (the low light is so so so good)I, but I really like what the A7III brings to the table. Battery life, auto focus fixes, DUAL card slots (GO) plus full frame 120p doesn't hurt.
I think I will hold for that as well. I hope there is not a wait list for the camera.
The A7SII has been so amazing this whole time I'm sorta relieved the SIII hasn't been released yet haha
battery life is amazing. can confirm. Took A7III to Banff and Jasper and never had to use a second battery in the same day.
Battery life is unreal on this thing! Makes me eextra frustrated to have my 15 a6500 batteries with me for my shoots :P

@mattihaapoja use a Hot Shoe mount adapter for a mobile phone with "Sony One-touch remote sharing" so a mobile phone will become your viewfinder!

I'm a big Sony fan. I'm sure you figured it out, but one thing I do to solve for the flip screen is hook it up to my phone with the Playmemories app. It shows a live view and can remotely control the camera if needed, it's been super handy for me on the A6500.

Why to even bother about brands? Just look at different models and their characteristics that fit your project or type of work. That's all that matter, not logos.

But right now, Sony doesn't have that, neither of any mirroless camera..

I bought A7III too for similar reasons. My other camera is 1DX2, and simply put the A7III has higher image quality and easier workflow for 4K video. It took a while to get used to it. I had to program ALL custom keys to be comfortable with it. But after it, I really love it. I am using still Canon lenses with Sigma MC11 adapter. The colors IMO are good, definately better than older Sonys, completely happy. Probably switching to Sony fully eventually.
I can see the differences in colors and of course the auto focus is horrible.

The guy just fucking got it lmfao, chill. It looks great once you know what you’re doing. And no shame but Matti doesn’t just yet. Once he’s had time with it and sets his focus mode correctly you’ll see it’s not MUCH different from canon color when set correctly and the auto focus is juicy. When I first got the A7RIII I wanted to throw it out a window in regards to video but figured out what works and it looks damn good

I just got mine a week ago and already having fun. This camera is awesome and certainly go over my expectation. It's my first time owning a full frame camera and boy, the images taken by it is so cleeeeaaan!

The b-roll of the Sony looked way better than anything shot with the Sony. Assuming you used a Canon for that?
Color science, auto focus, and a front facing screen is a bigger priority than dynamic range, at least for me.

The autofocus was noticeably not as good. Good job on the color grading though. Better than most footage I’ve seen shot on Sony. Being able to shoot log and have more dynamic range, I can see why that was more of a priority. To each their own. I love my 5DmkIV ;)
The only thing holding canon above water right now is autofocus. The fact that sony and panasonic cameras hunt for focus in a static, talking head shot is just ridiculous for vlogging purposes.

I wonder who is going to break through first...Canon to release a reasonably priced camera with beefier specs to crush the GH5/A7 series of cameras. Or Panasonic and Sony to perfect their autofocus and color science. I feel like Canon is closer...if they released a 90D tomorrow with 4k/60, 1080/120, and a higher bit rate log capability, it would be game over for the competition.
I have been filming with dslrs since de 5D came to the market and not once have I used the auto-focus. So there maybe people that will not care about that...
Actually with the canon videos Matti had plenty out of focus pulls, mostly because it was center focus point and Matti moved out of the center or like in that one sitting next to his brother or it was someone else, with the center focus point in between them focussing on the background. Sony has eye-af and although I have the A6000 and A5100, I had never issues with the auto focus in decent enough light. In real low light those old APS-C camera's hunt a little bit.
But I am no fan boy.. I always just acquire what suits me for the bucks I have. The moment I bought the A6000 (some years ago) that was the case then and recently I bought a really cheap second hand A5100 as a second cam with a flip screen. For the A6000 I have a very nifty way to see the screen without using a second screen.. I created my own kind of mirror attached to a case which actually works very well. I have plans to start my own channel to share those tricks.. It's different than the ones out there.
I am still kind of shy and scared to start my own channel.. A lot of your videos are very motivating for me to actually start.

As I said before - you have to try the smartphone app for remote control. It is possible to use your phone for a monitor ;). Way cheaper and lightweight.

i got mine at the end of may after it being back ordered for 3 weeks. Best upgrade of my life. Went from the t5i to the sony a7iii. Love it so much.

Matti, don't use Slog2 for 120fps mode if you want better quality. Look into Cine3 or Cine4
Pro tip: film in 4K, crop in up to 200%, (140% is my sweet spot) output in 1080 and you essentially have a 2 camera setup with a wide and closeup. I use it for all of my interviews now. Love it!
No, buy an A6400 instead to get 1.5x crop and get 4K. With 1.5x crop you get twice as many focal lengths on your full frame lens collection.
Just a heads up, when connecting a monitor with the hdmi you loose the face tracing autofocus, so it will definetly hunt for focus, every one testing that thinks something is broken but manual also says it :)
I think it only loses face tracking in 4k with a monitor. 1080 works .

No kidding. C-log upgrade is why I went for the 5D over the 1DXII. Felt more dynamic range was ultimately more practical than 120p for my uses.
How about you guys put in a glow in the dark stars(spots) in the ceiling. Should be relaxing during late night editing sessions.

But I think you shoot out of focus with Canon too that time in the forest haha.. but what I like about Canon's AF is the movement/transition quite organic compare to Sony's which is more robotic.

Not true, definitely not amateurish. I think Sony a7III is comparable with 1DX and can do better in some areas and the price difference is crazy. With that said, I love Canon's color science especially on skin tones.
@@CyberEditing I agree with this. Noticed as soon as I started editing footage side by side (1dx &a7III) Canon looks cinematic. It's something most people won't notice unless you've trained your eyes to see it.

Good luck with it. Some things I noticed:
Focus looks jumpy and the FOV is changing.
As far as DR, the sky is still blown out.
You color grading still needs more work.
Yep whenever you get a new camera it takes a bunch of videos to dial down the colours. Especially when youtube conversion changes them completely :( rip saturation haha
Yeah, I hear ya. It sucks because you have Canon so dialed in, everything else isn't quite to that level. As long as you're happy using it, all the power to you. Even if it helps you vlog a little more or open some creativity, it will be worth it. But I SO don't envy you trying to balancing the colors from Canon and Sony in one video; unless you go the "film" look route LOL

I got an A7iii, the AF is amazing, especially with the zhyuin crane v2, done need to rely on the follow focus. Taken some of my best work using this beast!! 🔥

If your talking about the one in Maui he didn’t use the auto focus to its full advantage he set it up similar to his Canon auto focus to compare them. The setup he used does not compare how good the auto focus on the A7III is
Hey Matti Jason from the Primal Outdoors channel I bought the Canon 6d II on your recommendation and to be honest I hated the camera from the moment I got it, dynamic range was awful and low light was unusable, but I did continue to use it because of the auto focus and flip out display for my selfie shots and used my Nikon D850 for everything else. Like you I finally got my hands on a A7 III and I went with new Tamron 28-75 and I think this camera is going to be a game changer for me and I look forward to getting some videos made with it. I would be interested in hearing some more details on what Picture Profile you use and your settings once you have had some time with the camera. Also the Tamron 28-75 is a great sharp lens with amazingly quite autofocus I am very happy with it.

The A7III is a terrific camera. It's not enough to pull me away from Canon, but it really packs quite the punch, especially at the price range. I very much appreciate that Sony pushes things forward so much.

The Sony A7 lll looks awesome, but I'm just waiting to see what Nikon does with their mirrorless camera...it should be announced in detail in 2 days...hopefully. I have a lot of Nikon lenses, but we'll see soon.
Why not wait for the new Nikon? It's probably better in some situations. I mean it's gonna be announced in 2 days. And the dynamic range is awesome.
Hmmm, you could definitely see worse focusing performance, specifically at 9:00 & in other spots too....the focus was hunting back & forth. Seems like when you were a cap, then your face was out of focus quite often. Just love the color science of the 1DX Mk2....sadly not this.
Checked out current cost for Sony A7 iii ($2,198.00). For now, I'll stick with my Canon camera. After all just bought my OneWheel Plus XR a few weeks ago. Wife would not be to happy if I show up with a new camera. Looks like auto-focus is not quite perfect; In video at 1:34 , 2:24 . Yes, love my flip-out screen on the Canon as well.
To be honest, I didn't like the color profile in this video as well. Not as sharp. Not sure how much color grading you had to do but just didn't like how flat everything looked.

Really great idea! Been here since you were at the first few travel feel videos I have a question though. If I were to upgrade my a6000 and move to albuquerque, NM (where it rains and snows heavily a lot) should I switch platforms and get the lumix G85 for the weather seal or go for the a6300? Btw the type of content I want to shoot is cinematic location sometimes slow mo vlogs being both in front and behind the camera, with short films & etc on the side.
Looked good in the beginning shots, wasn't sure if you were shooting on it or not. But then, I saw the focus jump a couple times and you sat under that shelter with the trees in the back and I thought, straight away it looked washed out and greyscale. Not so much on your skin tones, but in the areas you want it to perform (like you mention the high dynamic background), to me, it just doesn't hold up against the 6DII or 1DXII.
Any idea why Sony does not build cameras with fully articulated screens? I’m very happy with my LUMIX G85 for now but would consider switching to Sony if they had useable viewfinders.
Had the A7III for about 4 weeks now, And I am very impressed!!! Have always been with Nikon, Sold my Nikon D750 & D500 just to afford this camera! But it was worth it, Nikon have brilliant dynamic range vs Canon, But the A7III even beats the Nikons, Love it! And now I can do proper video too! Nikons suck for video!. Main 2 things I look for in a camera are Dynamic range & Low light quality and I am simply amazed by both on the Sony!
I've got a Sony hx80 which I'm really enjoying for the price, £220 so I'm not worried about breaking it, also as I've only just got into vlogging and photography and Sony was the best I could get for the price

I think I would have wait for the a7siii. I know they didn't announce it yet but seeing how Sony released the 2 previous generations, I am pretty sure it will come very soon. The leaked specs are quite interesting but I don't think there will be a flip-out screen yet since they tend to keep the same body on a whole generation.

Hi Matti, I am a fan of yours and with this comment I am not trying to ruin anyones party....but there is a lot of misinformation as far as the dynamic range of the A73. The camera has about 10 stops of usable dynamic range, give or take as tested. For small time videos it is a fine camera but not for the high quality videos you produce.
