    People have said it before, it is easier to negotiate a raise with a new employer than with the current one.

    whenever I ask for a promotion or a raise and I don't get it, I give myself one.. through a new job

      @@reese85 happened couple times in my career in the past 20 years but keep in mind, everyone feels overworked and underpaid. So if you're just lazy and entitled looking for a raise, this won't work for you. But if you work hard and add a lot of value, then you will find a company that is willing to pay for it

    An annual raise that is anything 2-3% or under isn't really a "raise". It's just an inflation adjustment.

      No it's not. Inflation is higher than that. Don't believe the CPI number, it does not include the most crucial things like food, rent, and gas.

    The only way you get real salary increases is by moving from job to job and then eventually going out on your own.

    Wrong answer - management lied to you and can never be trusted again. Start looking for a new job, as soon as one is secured, resign from this one and list the retracted raise as the primary reason for leaving.

    Look for another job, especially if your profession is at all in-demand. That’s the best way to get a raise right now.

    I work in accounting and I see what everyone makes at every company I've worked for and it's so unfair it is sad. If people knew what others made they would all feel gut-punched. It all comes down to you and moving on if they will not give you the number.

    No what he really should do is apply for a new place of work…back when i was 21 my mgr told me which always stuck the only real promotion and raise comes from a different company bc at your current one and in their eyes ur only worth what they’re paying you right now

      One thing that's happened to me. Is that I threatened to leave and they offered me a raise on the spot.
      Well my mistake was staying because later they treated me differently because they had a feeling I would leave eventually. So they had me train someone and made me believe that it was to help my workload. Turns out it was my replacement and I got laid off

      @@israelruiz8706 That’s exactly what Joshua Fluke says, as well as another more mature TH-camr who is an executive recruiter. If they offer you a raise when you tell them you’re leaving, it’s an insult because they could have been paying you that before and they didn’t. Or actually they couldn’t; they offer it because it’s only until they replace you. It’s not actually in the budget. Either way, they replace you.

    Being in HR, it’s likely that someone in his department opened their mouth before all approvals were received. They can’t honor it if they don’t have the budget, or if it would cause an internal equity issue.

      A work friend of mine recently received a good offer from another company. They countered with an offer that was unapproved and when it came to it they wouldn't do it.She lost out.

    U find urself new job. If u feel u r not vaulted, leave BEFORE u get bitter. Trust me I went through similar situation, and now I am at my new job and feel so much better.

    Where I work, they gave 10% raises to everyone (pretty much across the board) and made it possible to triple your bonus. They were afraid of losing people to our competition. I think the raises will be less next year, but I'll wait and see. I hope not.

      I wonder if the competition is paying as much as 30% more, and those raises were still less than what you'd make elsewhere.

      @@Excalibur2 - yes, I think you could get even more if you switch. But then, that makes you the highest paid and newest member of that company. Not a good combination if things slow down. Plus, you have to start from scratch in building relationships, learning the software and file structure of the new company, etc.

      That's not always easy for a lot of people. Some people are emotionally attached to their job, they don't like to bounce from job to job, they don't like to apply or give their information all the time, etc. I'd much rather make a little less money if I'm attracted to my job and commute is flexible than to have a higher paying job and not be happy. It's a sacrifice you can make if you are a natural saver.

    Practice your negotiating skills by trying to get them to agree in writing to the other 3.5% in six months. Still get another job and leave, though.
