Well his voice still isn't 100% but I think he felt with the large crowd he wanted to try and push it as the crowd looks out of it already JM is a legend and everybody was just kind of standing there I think he was just trying to get the crowd into it .
In one of the interviews, John said that he hates to play this song the most because this song is a note or 2 higher for him and after his throat surgery he has lost those notes. So he tries to get around by singing differently. Maybe that's why you find it to be horrible.
I hate it when artists change the song from how it is on the original recording. People want to hear it the way they remember it, not your latest version.
pretty sure he was doing it out of necessity because he didn't seem able to hit the notes. doesn't justify or make it any better, but there was some logic to it I guess.

i m not sure the exact year but he got throat hurt around 2013 or 2014, then he sings pretty bad. BTW the sound is amazing
