American here, just watching through a few of these after reading about Crimewatch UK in a book on British television and absolutely loving them! Not the subject matter specifically of course, but the matter-of-fact presentation, the no-expense-spared re-enactments, and the glimpse into the history from the other side of the pond. Thank you so much for uploading and preserving these so people like me can find and appreciate them!

The Sidney Cooke gang is one of the most appalling cases in the 20th century and it's shocking that they're not more well known. Sadly, Mark Tildesley was typical of Many of the victims. From a somewhat chaotic family where nobody was acting as his guardian. Both Mark's Father and his older brother (who had a criminal record and who had previously physically attacked Mark) were suspects at the start. As the reconstruction shows, his parents knowingly allowed him to go to the Fair by himself, aged just 7. This absolutely was NOT normal back then. Fairs had a truly appalling reputation for decades if not centuries, and that reputation was well known in the 80s. They were noted as dangerous places, not only because of paedophiles, but also for antisocial behaviour and attracting "bad kids". Just look at how they were depicted in Disney's Pinocchio as far back the 1940s. There had been a number of kids going missing from fairgrounds or coming to harm in the decades leading up to Mark's abduction, and it's sadly not unheard of today. Perhaps the most prominent fairground case before Mark's case was that of 15 year old Sean McGann a couple of years earlier. He was found murdered after visiting a fairground. Some have speculated that Sidney Cooke was also involved in that.

This episode sends shivers down my spine. In 1974, this same man approached me and a friend. He appeared lost and akward. He asked if I could show him where the train station was. I feel so sad for young Mark. This man is the devil incarnate. They know how to put you at ease; & I only 10 years old at the time trusted him; as insane as it now appears. I was innocent as children were in those days; never imagining that I was in the company of a psychopathic murderer. He persuaded me to help him carry bags he had hidden on an abandoned viaduct. When we arrived there, he flew into a psychotic frenzy and dragged me along the embankment. I felt that he was going to kill me & begged him not to. This terror still lives we me today. He went about his evil work as I prayed for God to save me. From the corner of my eye a stranger appeared, a Hell´s angel, but angel nonetheless. The devil ran...he took my trust and sense of safety with him. Yes, I survived, yes I was lucky. I know what Mark and how many others went through. This man is truly evil. I only became certain watching this that yes it was him. When he abducted me he was wearning the same thick framed glasses. He must have used them as an attempt to disguise himself. Hence I´m writing this. There must be countless other victims of this man. God help us all recover from our experience with this devil!

The definitive book about the Sidney Cooke gang featured a psychologist talking about why the gang killed kids:
""They were from a generation of "rent boys" who had grown up and were venting their anger on their victims for what had happened to them. They perceived a parallel sexuality with the victims and were trying to negate it because they now wanted to appear more powerful, stronger and more in control....the younger and more innocent the child, the greater the feelings of power experienced by the abusers. As soon as they have engaged in one type of perversion, the next has to be more extreme to provide the excitement they crave....there is no single reason why a man becomes a paedophile or murderer. But the classic reasons can be seen in most of the men involved in the killings. One of them was taken into care when very young, and knew little of his father. It is believed that he was sexually abused while in care and became a rent boy before becoming an abuser himself. All of them lacked a strong father figure. Something they had in common with their victims..."These men loved created fear. They were killing the childhood they never had. Where they saw a childhood, they wanted to destroy it."

Det Supt. Tony Miller was very educated and a good speaker, looks like Sidney Cooke they were describing. My only concerns were why Cooke was hitch hiking, when he had a flat in London.

  • @zeddeka

Something they had in common with their victims...These men loved created fear. They were killing the childhood they never had. Where they saw a childhood, they wanted to destroy it."
