Yes such a good team, especially when Jacqui Hames joined the team. I always thought Nick and Fiona Bruce complimented eachother well too, Jill was good but Nick and Sue were just the perfect pairing.
The Imraan Vohra case had a real twist to it. Many years later in 2007, DNA evidence from relatives identified the murderer as Robert Morley, who had died in 1997. Morley was originally from London but had been evacuated to Lancashire as a child in the war. He moved back to lancashire in 1979 and lived there until 1988 when he moved back to Charlton in London. He had a string of convictions for petty crime but also for indecent exposure. Something we now understand as a massive red flag for sex offenders whose behaviour escalates dangerously. The police had not previously linked him at all to the case. Morley was known as a heavy drinking, controlling and aggressive womaniser but there had been no previous suspicion that he was a paedophile. His former wife did however say that he was very secretive and led a transient life, moving around various places in Lancashire. Police subsequently started to investigate whether he may have been involved in more crimes in Lancashire during his time there, 1979-87, but so far nothing has been publicised. They feel it's highly unlikely that Imraan's murder would have been Morley's first offence.
Some of them are downright eerie and sinister, and I quite like them for those reasons. I think that, as you say, later on the reconstructions took on the superficial appearance of being more dramatic, but they didn't always show the moment of the crime itself as they often did in the early episodes, probably because they started to get worried about upsetting people.

i'm american and when i was growing up there was basically nothing non american on tv which sucks because i'm a true crime enthusiast and would have totally watched this show if it had been on. on shows like 'AMERICA'S MOST WANTED' it's a good show but they always had cheesey music in the background during reconstructions and the acting was sometimes very mediocre. this is much better because the lack of cheesey music makes it eerier because it's more like you're really there as the shit's going down. i'm so glad youtube came along and brought this i've watched everyone even if i do sometimes have to look up certain words. over here a 'building society is what we'd call a 'savings and loan'. before i started watching this i'd never heard the term 'building society' in my life. and over here a 'skip' is a 'dumpster' that was another new one on me.
It could be because this is on the BBC which we have to pay a TV licence for. This prevents adverts (commercials) etc. The BBC is now broadcasting their programs on international, commercial tv which means ridiculously long arsed starts to the programmes with stupidly long re-caps. The BBC need to pack this in because it’s not fair on licence payers. Lots of programmes in the U.K. has become over dramatic with the stupid background music you just mentioned

Watching this episode and one from 2011 there is no comparison this one beats it hands down. Just look a the dark uninvitiing sets compared to this episode that makes you feel like they genuinely want your help. 🇬🇧👍

Too much police time was taken up with the assumption the killer was an Asian man that other leads such as the man who could speak German (Morley had been married previously to a German woman) were never followed. Indeed Morley was never interviewed about the killing.

I had a 1983 Vauxhall cavalier for my first car in 1997. The insurance was sky high because I was 17 and they were always getting nicked for parts. I had several break ins in that car but I had a wheel lock and pull out radio so scum could do jack shit with it anyway.

That 1st armed Bank robber has to be one of thee most calmest, coldest, calculated, ruthless, determined, professional one I can ever personally remember, on any of these iconic crimewatch programs, its doubtful he's been caught, and punished for his crimes, but hopefully justice will prevail for all soon, due to lack of CCTV, and mobile technology, many crimes from the 80s and early 90s went unsolved...

They should bring crimewatch uk back again and call it crimewatch cold case and just concentrating on the uk most heinous unsolved cold case files that had appeared on crimewatch. with all the tech nowadays and the leaps in forensic science most of the people who committed crimes that were not caught could , even after all these years be brought to justice
They do mention the cases on the daily show but to be honest, they need a prime time slot, better presenters and do it fortnightly so there’s a bit of focus on it
The thing that crimewatch captures so well is just how bleak the UK was in the 1980s. So much of the country was grey and run down. Post industrial emptiness.
I really noticed this too. I am a Canadian but emigrated to the UK in 2003, so this has all been a trip to watch for both the interesting crime stories but also to see how life was then. Things like pension books and how easy it seemed to have your money stolen etc. I’m so glad these episodes are on here to watch!

The interview with the police officer on the first case was very awkward the police officer seemed uncomfortable when being asked about a racist element how times have Changed
Searching about that case led me to a book which mentioned the arson attack and it said that in the '80s many Asians who were the victims of racially motivated crime would be hassled by the police and accused of being illegal immigrants. There was a large amount of racism in the police at the time and I think that was evident in the way it was presented in this episode. A very awkward watch because it was pretty obvious racism was the motive. Sue Cook basically stated that several times.

The police were incompetent in those days. That man was never caught. It was only after the Steven Lawrence protests in the 90s that the met police were politically forced to act because people started losing their jobs at the top.
I'm watching these in chronological order and so far Bristol and surrounds keep popping up a fair bit. In fact Lew Clark, the last copper being interviewed on this episode, definitely appeared either earlier in 1985 or in 1984 on another case.

Another possibility, is that he may have learnt "on the job", as it were. The reason I say that, is because of the way the robber was suggested to have been asking for open, searching information (i.e asking for full, informative explanations of each system of security, rather than "narrowing down" his scope of information retrieval by asking "what does the security system of your branch consist of", or worse "how many alarms are there" - or at the very bottom of the interrogation intellect "does your alarm system need a key to turn it off" - simply because that can only be answered with two different words). His method of interrogation came across as extraordinarily intelligent. He also was presented as highly intelligent, with how it was suggested, that he first established contact with Peter Chapman - slashing his tyre, suggesting that the same had happened to him, then engaging in small talk to elicit "casual" information of the assistant manager's position and place of work. Further to that, that it was suggested that he was to reimburse Chapman for the tyre(s), which would suggest that he wasn't completely inconsiderate to things going on around him - which may be why he wasn't caught. He "looked" completely normal, which may be another reason he wasn't caught - you simply wouldn't notice him in a fairly empty street. To tell you the truth, part of me actually *wanted* him to "get away with it", because - let's face it, he was cool! The thing is though, that maybe _other_ viewers who might've known about someone they suspected, could've felt the same after seeing the reconstruction. In short, the BBC basically gave the building society robber a free pass, by glorifying his actions. It also (sadly for Peter Chapman) showed him up, as a bit of a wimp, rather than a victim of traumatic crime.

It was all pushed into the shadows back then because gay men could be arrested for even hugging another man in public in those days. Even the slightest touch could get you locked up for 'gross indecency'. The public was massively homophobic and so were the police. When you push people to the edges of society, they have no choice but to behave like they're on the edge of society.

Plus it must have been horrible for homosexual people back then. They had to keep that part of their lives very secret. These early reconstructions are at once more dramatic yet less sensationalist than the later ones. It’s quite paradoxical really.

The thing that crimewatch captures so well is just how bleak the UK was in the 1980s. So much of the country was grey and run down. Post industrial emptiness.
I really noticed this too. I am a Canadian but emigrated to the UK in 2003, so this has all been a trip to watch for both the interesting crime stories but also to see how life was then. Things like pension books and how easy it seemed to have your money stolen etc.

The interview with the police officer on the first case was very awkward the police officer seemed uncomfortable when being asked about a racist element how times have Changed
exactly what I thought.
Searching about that case led me to a book which mentioned the arson attack and it said that in the '80s many Asians who were the victims of racially motivated crime would be hassled by the police and accused of being illegal immigrants. There was a large amount of racism in the police at the time and I think that was evident in the way it was presented in this episode. A very awkward watch because it was pretty obvious racism was the motive. Sue Cook basically stated that several times.
We were an Asian family in the 1980s and we had kids for years throwing bricks and bottles at our windows. But the police never were anything else but helpful..
Yep but also it demonstrates why the Police should never get too hanged on the issue of motivation...You need to identify the culprits first and not make assumptions, no matter how seemingly obvious, a legacy of the Macpherson inquiry which shown no grasp of police detective work..

The police were incompetent in those days. That man was never caught. It was only after the Steven Lawrence protests in the 90s that the met police were politically forced to act because people started losing their jobs at the top.

Seems like a lot of crimes so far have been in Oxford.
I'm watching these in chronological order and so far Bristol and surrounds keep popping up a fair bit. In fact Lew Clark, the last copper being interviewed on this episode, definitely appeared either earlier in 1985 or in 1984 on another case.
If you watch Morse, it was a murder hot-spot!

Robert Morley. He died in 1997 was never convicted. DNA advancements proved he did it.

@@sameulhaq797 because they didn't know who did it when this was made and were investigating all possible suspects. As JC said, they didn't find out who did it until about 20 years after this episode was made when DNA evidence came to light.

This looks like he had inside knowledge. Perhaps he had worked for them in the past, or had an accomplice on the inside. Wonder if the police looked into this.

It _could_ be down to insider knowledge based on those attributes...
Another possibility, is that he may have learnt "on the job", as it were.
The reason I say that, is because of the way the robber was suggested to have been asking for open, searching information (i.e asking for full, informative explanations of each system of security, rather than "narrowing down" his scope of information retrieval by asking "what does the security system of your branch consist of", or worse "how many alarms are there" - or at the very bottom of the interrogation intellect "does your alarm system need a key to turn it off" - simply because that can only be answered with two different words).
His method of interrogation came across as extraordinarily intelligent.
He also was presented as highly intelligent, with how it was suggested, that he first established contact with Peter Chapman - slashing his tyre, suggesting that the same had happened to him, then engaging in small talk to elicit "casual" information of the assistant manager's position and place of work.
Further to that, that it was suggested that he was to reimburse Chapman for the tyre(s), which would suggest that he wasn't completely inconsiderate to things going on around him - which may be why he wasn't caught.
He "looked" completely normal, which may be another reason he wasn't caught - you simply wouldn't notice him in a fairly empty street.
To tell you the truth, part of me actually *wanted* him to "get away with it", because - let's face it, he was cool!
The thing is though, that maybe _other_ viewers who might've known about someone they suspected, could've felt the same after seeing the reconstruction.
In short, the BBC basically gave the building society robber a free pass, by glorifying his actions.
It also (sadly for Peter Chapman) showed him up, as a bit of a wimp, rather than a victim of traumatic crime.

It was all pushed into the shadows back then because gay men could be arrested for even hugging another man in public in those days. Even the slightest touch could get you locked up for 'gross indecency'. The public was massively homophobic and so were the police. When you push people to the edges of society, they have no choice but to behave like they're on the edge of society.
I wonder when homosexual people first became described as gay?? Gay used to be used to describe someone who was happy. Just something I’ve always wondered. Plus it must have been horrible for homosexual people back then. They had to keep that part of their lives very secret. Due to the terrible and unnecessary persecution they would receive from bigots and homophobes. That’s one part of the past that I’m glad has changed. For the better.

the roy page murder was solved by the viewers people spotted him in southampton a week after the appeal there ring the local police he was arrested take to bristol the detective know he was the right man when he ask for a glass of water like he did with the oldy lady
