      One of the benefits of moving note towards a cashless society is that there are far fewer opportunities for things like that. Many people were still payed weekly in cash in those days, so there were hundreds of targets for robbery each week

      It was starting to get a bit harder then to rob banks due to advances in CCTV but wage snatches and post office and bookie robberies were still commonplace.

      @T H
      Assessing the _motivations_ and the catalysts for such crimes, as well as circumstantial depravation and disadvantage, ought to help eliminate the instances of such robberies.
      Problem-reaction-solution methodology may be being more cleverly utilized, than we may have necessarily appreciated.
      Deprivation (in whatever context that takes) leads to the resorting of committing such acts, which leads to (miraculously) something that just takes something more _fundamental_ away from people, such as their privacy ("conveniently") every time.
      Forgive me, I'm sure your comment implied that there were disadvantages to a cashless society, but I think it would be better if we moved {back} to using a tangible means of exchange *(STERLING* silver for example) instead of just tokens of credit that we still (just about) use now.

    In an article in a Northolt newspaper called The Gazette for Friday 18th October 1985 it was stated that she was last seen alive on 31st October 1984 at 8pm when she left Heathrow Airport after a cleaning shift, where she discussed with a work colleague about a boyfriend in Spain, the fact she had a new boyfriend locally in Northolt area and she was having drinks with him that evening. That doesn't seem to link in with the above reconstruction about her where she is portrayed as being last seen alive in the day [early morning with a work mate], saying those exact things to that work mate, then seen with a man in her room later in the day, etc. If she was at a shift in evening at Heathrow, which puts a slightly different angle on the story, it begs the question of why she never responded to trick or treat in evening. Perhaps it was because she was on her way to Heathrow perhaps ? This info was never even mentioned on the BBC CW reconstruction above, it was all portrayed as occuring in the day. Was she at Heathrow at 8pm on 31st October 1984 or has the journalist/reporter in The Gazette made a typo error and means 8am rather than 8pm I wonder. I bet we'll never know now !!!!

      I agree. This man has never come forward to reveal himself. Pages ripped out of Beverlys Diary along with personal letters missing? There were clearly things within those diary pages and personal letters that identified her murderer. Very sad case. She was clearly a private person and had only alluded about this man to her friends without any specific details possibly because she had only been seeing him a couple of weeks like she said in the reconstruction. Who was the attractive man seen in her flat? My guess is it was her new boyfriend who potentially has never come forward to revealed himself because he murdered her.

      I google mapped it when I saw it on the Crime-watch years vid for 1985, It is Farman Grove where Beverley lived and the road leading there is called Wayfarer Rd. The Byron Pub on Byron Way is no more apparently, it's luxury flats now, but the road leading to the flats is still called Byron Way. Reddit has an interesting blog write up of Beverley's case with a link to a newspaper article from the day.

Women in the main are close their Mom's and would not really go a month without contacting each other, especially as they both lived near to each other. I doubt very much it was anything to do with 'careers' and she had been a successful hairdresser before, which was her chosen career, so going into cleaning was experimentation of a new job choice I feel, NOT a ruddy career move. I think we need to be careful about eulogising the past as the saying goes, "the older we get, the better we imagine the past was". I certainly don't think people were more serious or smarter back then at all. Human nature is human nature. One of the abiding memories I do have is how nasty a lot of social attitudes were back then. Incredibly racist, sexist and massively homophobic. Certainly, the UK had a massive crime problems back then. We had the highest rate of violent crime in Europe. The 80s were a pretty grim time in many ways. Mass unemployment, dereliction, football hooliganism, violent strikes and riots. It was not a pleasant decade in many ways.
