    I have a 92 f150 with 275,000 miles on it (4.9 / 5speed / 2wd). I know I have exceeded the value of the vehicle in repairs over the years, but ever time I look at it all I can see is everything that is still right with it. I just cant bring myself to junk the poor old girl. You're right that I shouldn't keep fixing it, but... well I love it and I want to keep it going as long as possible. As for parts becoming obsolete and impossible to find, as soon as 3d metal printing is perfected and the price comes down, you'll be able to print off your replacement parts at home.
    Need a new exhaust manifold? print one out.
    If the machine is too costly, you'll find stores like Pep Boys etc won't even carry inventory. If you need a new alternator? they'll just print it out.
    Right now if you have a big enough printer, you could print out a new plastic intake manifold. New snorkel, most interior parts. Need a new trim ring around your door handle? Print one out at home.
    There are full metal sintering machines available. They run around $40,000 and you still need to "bake" the part after it's printed. A full set up is about $50,000.00.
    For those who don't know: metal sintering is where you take a powdered metal material (iron, aluminum, steel, copper) and then put it in a mold under high heat and pressure and the powder sticks together to form the part. With 3d printers though the powder is laid down and supported by fine sand. Then a flux is added and the whole thing is put into an oven to bake. The high temp causes the flux to flow around the metal particles bonding them together. Knock off the sand and voila, you have a part.
    The beauty about a 3d printed part is if you have a surface that is subject to wear, like a brake rotor, you don't have to make the whole part out of harder steel. You just print the wear surface out of higher carbon steel and use iron for the rest of it.

My wife is partial to German cars. We have owned a Porsche Boxster; BMW 535i and now she owns a 2014 BMW 640i convertible M class (which we love). My question is: What is better moving forward? Mercedes sedans; Audi/Porsche/VW; or BMW?. I intend to keep the 640i (I think it will be a collector vehicle some day with excellent maintenance). But I will need to buy her a daily driver soon.

    I agree with the Wizard about the responsibility of repair, but you have to consider cost of REPLACEMENT of a car you like. Especially if you have been a good car-daddy and know that you have only one (if albeit, expensive) repair needed.
    Sure, you could get another used car like yours, but you inherit someone else's problems...
    Plus, new cars generally suck.
    Edit to add: I say fix it, unless you run the risk of totally alienating all your friends and family over the lunacy of "loving your car too much". But then, some guys need an escape-hatch!

I know EVERYTHING about that van, as we've owned it almost 20 years. As opposed to buying a $5k vehicle which we know NOTHING about. I'd rather take my chances with what I know. But I every other week or so (couldn't more often as I lived quite a distance away or I'd have done it every week) would take him out for a spin in it around the area he lived and he loved doing that.
      Responsive, reliable, comfortable. Expensive of course, but for my dad, he knew it'd be his last car ever and he considered it worth the money.
      Sold it on after dad died because I couldn't afford the road taxes and insurance on it, never needed more than the normal maintenance set in the book for it in the 5 years he owned it.

    I appreciate you stating the value vs COR argument. I have several customers that I have told that their car has. Do Not Resuscitate order. It makes sense to keep it going with cheap patches but save the repair money for a new car as that one has a long list of developing serious problems that will put it way past its value to keep. Note: a car with classic car value is different.

Of course sizes like 19/32 or 21/64 were come up with to solve the issue.

    One piece of advice on the cost of repairs vs the value of the vehicle.
    Another Ford mechanic said this to me:
    1) What is the cost to replace the vehicle with something newer? (in regards to F150). A new(er) F150 is going to cost 4 to 5 times what the vehicle and repairs is worth. So while the vehicle might only be worth $5000 and the repairs will cost $5000, if a new one is $40,000.......
    2) buy a newer but used one. It too is going to cost you more than $10,000 and then, do you have any idea that it will run for 3 years and not cost you $5000 to repair? Do you know if the previous owner maintained it properly? At least with your vehicle you KNOW what you've done to it, what you've had replaced. How it has been maintained.

Never left anyone stranded or need a tow. I drive it daily and on vacation. Still looks great inside and out. My pick for Toyota would be the 1998 RAV4. I owned one that my ex wife drove. It was totaled in an accident at 150K miles still running strong. The weak point on them is the oil pump seal. The seal itself is under 20 dollars but the labor will make you give up your weekend to do it or about a grand in a shop.

      the problem though is again with Ford's idiot engineers, the manual transmission in the GT version and weak aluminum shift forks. One day you'll be driving along and go to put it in 3rd, whoopsie, no 3rd or 4th gear. If it's under warranty they'll replace the transmission with, you guessed it, another transmission with aluminum forks. AND you'll have to wait 4 months for it because they are so backlogged.

    • @bschell1969
      @bschell1969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Muskoka Mike just depends on the car and how hard you shift it generally. There’s guys that run them without a problem. The excellent 10-speed is a good alternative to avoid the possibility though

    • @bschell1969
      @bschell1969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bschell1969 That's true about how hard you "shift" but remember, the GT was supposed to be a track ready vehicle and able to withstand the rigors of track use. I mean "track" mode isn't just a button on your dashboard lol. I know the marketing dept thinks that's all it is but labelling a vehicle suitable for track use IS NOT just a marketing gimmick lol.
      If you're going to make a track car, every part of the car has to be able to withstand track use.
      Ford isn't the only one, Dodge and the exploding diffs in the Hellcat are another example. Sure they built an engine with what 900 hp? made it do 9 seconds in the 1/4 mile but forgot to make a diff that can withstand the forces exerted on it lol.
      The prob with Ford tho is they found out about the issue with the forks in like the first 3 months and never bothered to make the changes at that point. To solve the problem all they'd have to do is start making them out of billet aluminum instead of cast. Hell, I bet if they just cast them out of higher grade aluminum they'd be fine. Did they? Naw, they just keep on making them out of weaker material and "hope" that they can keep up.

    I had a 78 Mustang II with a 2.8 v6, and a 4 spd manual. It was a dark green notch back. I had fun with it. The 79 Mustang was the start of the new body style, which I thought was very ugly. Anytime something broke I just went down to the junk yard and pulled a replacement part. It was very easy to work on.

    *Next Q&A should be about Cadillac.* Back in the day they were solid build (just like most car brands anyway) but around the 90's GM started to make them crappy I think. Are the Northstar engines any good? Are the Opel/Chevrolet/Buick rebadge Cadillacs any good (like the Cadillac cts, bls, catera). Is it still a good Idea to buy a landyard Coupe de Ville or Eldorado from the 70's or are they falling apart?

    RE, New Mustangs: I have to agree that the styling of the new Mustangs really don't pay all that much homage to earlier generations. I have owned a bunch in the past, including a '67 fastback, a .69 Mach 1 and even a 85 ex CHP car that I drag raced. However the new ones are head and shoulders above the old ones in handling and performance. I just LOVE the Coyote motor and with just a few relatively inexpensive modifications, I am currently getting a little over 450hp at the wheels out of my 2015 GT. Plus it has IRS and with the factory Performance Package and 15" six piston Brembos in the front (four piston in the rear), it handles and stops like no other Mustang I have ever driven. I might also add that I am a dyed in the wool GM guy, but when I went looking for a newer car to hot rod, even though I felt like a traitor, I went with the 'Stang and I am glad I did.

  •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't understand why the BIG3 don't build '67 Mustang fastbacks, '69 Z/28's and '70 Challengers. They would make a freaking killing.

    Regarding the wheel nuts. I have had a similar problem with mine on the XJS, it eventually transpired that the nuts had previously been fitted using an air tool and over tightened as a result. This has distorted the stainless steel
    caps to the extent that I’ve to replace all of them. So, the moral of this tale is don't allow tyre fitters to use air tools on the wheel nuts otherwise you could find yourself well up the creek on a wet, windy night!

    I used to own a 76 LTD Wagon with the 400 V8. Had to replace the EGR and Smog Pump for emissions. Failed miserably with the new parts installed, got back in line, blocked off the EGR and cut the belt to the pump while they were setting it up on the dyno, in front of the Technician. With both disabled, passed with flying colors.
    Got a permanent Equipment Waiver for that vehicle for my efforts, wound up putting 250000 miles on it before the drivers' front frame torque box welds failed

    The Fox body Mustang guy/girl has nothing to worry about.... if they ONLY use it as a “Track” car. Not a street car. The 5.0L runs fine, if not better, without. On a track... those 5.0 Fox body are a riot. Hilariously fun. Few car can give so much bang for the buck, than the 5.0L striped down (manual, obviously) Mustang LX. And then....you ‘Grow Up’ and get yourself a Porsche (911/924/928/944). Nothing else (no Boxters or SUVs). After all the Porsche motto was ‘Porsche... there is no substitute’. Thanks for the video.

      Good point. It’s not so much our snow. It is more about our long drawn out cold Fall to snow days. Or delayed Springs were our days are chilly to freezing, though NO Snow. Like early December or Mid-April... at those Temperatures an air-cooled engine truly shines. But your point is well taken... Rust is a big problem, in Central to Eastern Canada (leas so for Alberta/BC). Thanks for caring about car classics.

    Hey Wizard love the videos.
    I am in the UK and the first "mordernish" diesel I bought in around 2014 ish was a 2002 Focus 1.8 TDCI (Best car I have ever owned by the way and still regret not spending the £800 or so to fix it after 3 years of ownership) and was told horror stories about EGR valves and so the first thing I done was bought a blanking plate for it off ebay for about £4 and it still passed the emissions test here in the UK. A couple of years later I then bought a 2004 Mondeo with a 2L TDCI motor and didn't bother blanking it and when it reached around 110K miles the bloody thing would cut out when it got up to temp and had to wait till it cooled down to be able to start it. I wish I had just blanked it off when I got it.
    I completely understand in the need for emissions legislation and also that it will be different in the UK and US but adding complexity to cars such as EGR''s ect is just designing a car to go wrong and cost potentially a lot of money. There is so much tech being forced into new cars these days which is sending the cost of cars up and stopping us from being able to fix them without going to a garage. I can honestly say that even if I could afford to buy a new car I don't think I would buy one now.
    I now own a 195K Mile 2001 Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi non PD engine (not sure if you got the Skoda in the US but its essentially a MK4 VW Golf with a different body on it) and its awesome. None of this nonsense with unnecessary electronics in it, just a basic car that gets me around 58MPG and works when I turn the key (after a few seconds of cranking as I keep blowing the glow plug in Cylinder 4 for some reason) but it has never let me down appart from the clutch plate failing and changing the timing belt just in case.
    keep up the good work.
    John Boy

    Hi Car Wizard. For your Q&As: I have an opportunity to purchase a 2002 Dodge Durango with 84,000 miles. It has some issues that can be fixed, but the thing that has me pausing is the oil pressure on the 4.7l engine is reading too high on the gauge cluster. I know that low oil pressure can cause damage, but what about high oil pressure? Could this be a blockage, or just a bad sending unit? Thanks!
