I try to be nice, and say I can see if I have the RAM in stock in my parts bin for your machine to max it out, and install Chromium OS on it, or lightweight Lubuntu/Manjaro Budget Linux on it for $70 for my parts cost, and time, and yep they don't wanna do that, calling it a SCAM!! etc..
      I had one crazy lady a few years back take her junky ACER Aspire One netbook she got on Walmart special after I kindly explained her options, and she was so pissed, she slung it across my driveway while it shattered into many many pieces, and while she was ranting I went to my laundry room, grabbed my broom, and dust pan, and said if you kindly would clean that up, or I call the cops, she cleaned up her mess, and it was the last I ever saw of her thankfully!!

    I'm just outside of Toronto in Canada. A buddy of mine is an auto mechanic and he has his own private independent business and shop. A few years back, he went through the exact same thing, and with him it ended up going to court. So now, before fixing a vehicle he prints up a document/contract that highlights exactly what work needs to be (and may need to be done) and how much it will cost and the customer MUST read it, UNDERSTAND it and sign it before any work is done. This way HIS ass is covered and the customer is legally bound by the provisions of the contract. And you know what? He hasn't had any issues ever since.

      I'm sure you mean paying to have a water pump changed would cost $1000, which sounds about right. It really depends on the vehicle. He said it's a timing belt type water pump (not the accessory belt that you can see under the hood, deeper inside the engine), and considering this is a DOHC V6, the timing belt (or belts) can be even more complicated, so yeah, this is probably a "worst case" water pump scenario for labor.
      Also, what he listed (timing belt, pump, and coolant) is basically a package deal, and probably less than $100 in parts.

If you reach hard you can touch a second one... where's the third? I don't know. It's in some other dimension tucked away behind the frame or something. You have to either be a wizard or you have to perform blood sacrifice (and pull the engine out) to reach the last one.

      @Currancchs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most of those saying it is somehow the equivalent of fraud to give a likely problem-customer a high quote have likely never been in a position to provide such a quote to a prospective customer. Nothing unethical about this practice. You charge people based on the time, money, and frustration that a given job will likely result in. Once you've been up and running for a while, you definitely develop a feel for who is going to suck up huge amounts of your time or not pay. This is taken into account in the initial quote and why shouldn't it be. Time is time, whether you're turning wrenches or attempting to secure payment for services rendered/work around the owner's previous hack-repairs. While it is likely that a high quote will simply drive them away to a new shop, which is really the idea here, I always quote high enough that if they do decide to use me, the extra is enough for me to justify the likely extra hassle/risk. If you don't like it, go somewhere else!
