Why Do My Shoulders Hurt? Can the Alexander Technique Help?

  • Why do so many people's shoulders hurt? Our shoulders have an incredible design. They allow a huge range of movement in our arms and can transmit a lot of power. when they are working well, our arms feel light and mobile. We can use our arms and hands with speed, power and precision without fatigue, discomfort or pain
    When they aren't working so well, our movements can become restricted, stiff and clumsy
    poorly coordinated shoulders are also very prone to injury and trying to use our hands for work or other complex tasks such as playing music is very difficult if they are not supported properly
    But, can the Alexander Technique Help??
    Shoulder pain, winging scapula, forward shoulder position, tense or raised shoulders and the problems associated with painful shoulders such as repetitive strain injury, brachial plexus pain, nerve entrapment, thoracic outlet syndrome etc. all respond well to Alexander Technique.     I've been having shoulder and back rhomboid pain for a good month now, to the point of tears at one point. I've done stretches, exercises, heat, ice, cbd cream, everything!! Your videos have helped jog my memory of Alexander technique classes I took at Conservatory a decade ago. Pain has dissipated significantly in 2 days. I expect it to go away fully fairly soon, now that I'm paying attention to alignment and letting go. I definitely needed the visual and verbal walk through to get the Alexander technique concepts back in motion. Thank you for the much needed reminder!!

      I’ve watch many of your videos so far, including the ones on how to sit, stand and reset posture! I’ve been working on it every morning for about half an hour for the last couple of days. It’s almost meditative and the tension release feels so amazing when done right! They are helping me tremendously, especially having to teach voice and piano lessons back to back on zoom! Again, thank you very much!

    I have bursitis in my shoulders, one worse than the other. Can Alexander Technique give me a better and more comfortable range of motion? Thank you for your wonderful videos.

      Alexander Technique can certainly help you to maximise your comfortable range of motion and will hopefully help you to recover from the Bursitis if there is something that you have been doing that caused it or is preventing it from recovering. I hope your shoulders improve quickly!

    I have an old shoulder injury that has made me shrug it for protection and caused asymmetry and now pain. Do you have any advice or excercises? I’m new to AT but love it. Thank also for your wonderful videos!

    I'm loving your videos. I've been watching as many as I can get and I've subscribed. Thanks so much. Your explanations and instructions are very clear. They complement what I've learned from the wonderful Alexander teacher I work with in NYC. A video on climbing/descending stairs might be a useful addition. Thanks again.

      Thanks very much. I watched it first thing. And I’ll keep watching. Another issue -I’ll also ask Bill, my Alexander teacher here - in the city one is always carrying multiple bags of books, supplies of various sorts, groceries and other purchases, into the subway, up the hill, sometimes all day. Bags in hands, bags on shoulders, backpacks, cross-body. Any thoughts on how to accommodate this use of the body are welcome.

    Thanks for the videos! I have picked this tension relief trick by myself, I think it was a coincidence, I really love it, it's great but needs a very clear mind , which we don't have when we are too stressed 😢

      Haha, yes, a big part of it is learning to get a clearer mind! I find these types of exercises are a good way to develop this skill of quietening down. An alternative to meditation!

    Do you have any videos on how to hold pens, pencils? My neck and shoulders hurt most whenever I sit down to write and type.

      I don't at the moment but that is a really good idea. We look at this a lot when we are training to be teachers. I'll put it in the list of videos to make. Thanks for the suggestion

    Pete i cant seem to put my hand up to my shoulder comfortably, i dpnt know if its a nerological thing , posturely issue of habits , upper back, chest, shoulder or

      Hopefully if you make the movement whilst keeping your attention on the whole of yourself, you will notice if it causes any unhelpful reactions which are affecting the movement. For example a lot of people struggle with arm movements because it causes them to stiffen their shoulder or back muscles. In Alexander technique we are always looking at the general patterns of habit in ourselves. There is a possibility that an underlying medical condition is making the movement impossible but you may still be able to improve your coordination and tension levels to make things easier.

    Thank you for your wonderful videos. They are very useful for me and my own pains and tensions as well as for my work as a music teacher. I'm trying your exercise for forward bending shoulders, but the more they get relaxed, the more forward they go. I'm unable to move them backwards in any other way than actively pulling them back. Or should I press them backwards a bit with my hand? Thanks for any advice.

      As for your shoulders, if they are always tending to pull forwards then the most likely problem is that the muscles in the front of the body are over shortened.
      If you try to fix this by also tightening (shortening) the muscles in your back to pull the shoulders back you will end up with very stiff, uncomfortable shoulders.
      I would focus on trying to get the muscles of your chest and abdomen to release so that the shoulders can come into a better balance.

    Putting my hands there, I notice my chest muscles tend to tense on their own many times as I'm there too. How do I get them to quiet down and why do they do that?? Any idea? I Find it comical and interesting!

      I'm so glad that you find it comical! As we start the process of working in this way, we uncover all these crazy things going on in our body resulting from years of building up habits and I think it's important to see the funny side of that! Just keep quietly noticing and thinking the Alexander technique directions. The unnecessary muscular activity will soon disappear. The process just takes a little time especially if the habits are very strong.
