      (Love your channel by the way. I'll be making some piano specific Alexander Technique videos soon, just waiting to get back into the RNCM conservatoire where I work so I can use a Steinway!😀)

    Thankyou ❤ I have been diagnosed with DDD and my Dr recommended core exercises. I diffinately have some nerve pain down my right leg. As a runner I'd like to continue doing so...🏃‍♀️

    Thank you for this video - is the constructive rest the best technique for sciatica?
    Or do you have an other video specifically for that condition?
    And is it that the more often you practise it through the day, the faster the recovery ? Thanks

    • @MovementandPosture
      @MovementandPosture  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! Constructive rest is often really good for sciatica as it can help release tension and poor alignment in the back and pelvis. I would definitely advise you to try doing it for 5 to 10 minutes several times a day if you can while the pain is bad. The effectiveness of constructive rest or any Alexander Technique movements is based on you developing better awareness of yourself and learning to stop the habits that are causing the problems.
      The more you practice, you will start to find habits of holding tension or compression in different areas of your body. Some of these may seem unrelated to the sciatica, for example tension in the shoulders or jaw but reducing these may be enough to stop your back hurting as everything is connected.
      You may also find the guided videos on standing and sitting are useful as they develop the same skills in different situations. I hope you manage to get some relief, sciatica is no fun.

      Many thanks for taking the time to reply and explain. I will do as you suggest and practice through the day. Thank you for your encouragement! And also for your understanding... as you say, sciatica is no fun! Many thanks again and I'll look at the other videos too.

    Why semi-supine, only one leg at a time is using both legs not helpful or as helpful,?

    • @MovementandPosture
      @MovementandPosture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm semi spine, having both legs bent with the feet flat helps the lower back to release and restore the natural lumbar curve. The idea is to try to learn how to reduce stiffness in the hips and pelvis which had a huge effect on back pain

    Thanks so much for this Pete , I was telling you I got a Hip replacement less nearly 3months ago and I’m noticing the benefits more now but it was tough going for a while
    My back can get sore when I do gardening so I’m going to use your tips doing my exercises
    Can you practice that sitting posture on the sofa too ?

    • @MovementandPosture
      @MovementandPosture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad you're improving! Yes, the same principles apply to sitting on a sofa, it just gets more difficult to keep good alignment on a really soft chair but at least you can avoid stiffening up too much if you use the same thoughts and awareness. Maybe I'll try to make a sofa video soon!

      @@MovementandPosture Thanks Pete, yes good improvement this month... that would be a great idea 👍🏻 I’ll do it on the chair but I thought if I practice it when I remember sitting on the sofa it would help also

      Yes, it was about breathing. If you subscribe and ding the notification bell, you should see each week's video come up in your feed.
      Here's the link to today's breathing video though:
