  • See part 1 for precautions. Apply a very heavy coat of Citristrip with a chemical roller like one used for contact cement. Cover with 6 mill plastic. Let sit over night. Scrape into a bucket. While the paint is still soft, take a scotch brite pad and wet it with more Citristrip to wipe off the remaining paint. Use a bucket with water to wring out the pad and excess paint. Use water and a rag to wipe off remaining residue. Water will stop the stripping action. Make sure you use gloves, protect clothing and eye protection! Part - 1 • Bottom Paint Stripping...

nice to see you take the added effort in covering the ground and collecting the scraped paint in a can

Hi, Old posting here but I was wondering what type of paint you were stripping? You mentioned something about when washing up with water after using the scuff pad , it seemed to reset with water. Did you modify your approach? Would you use the product again?

Gary Nackman Interlux ACT ablative paint. The paint stripper is water-based and can be cleaned off with a sponge

Hey I just tried this method but I used plastic wrap that I got from the grocery store and is definitely not thick. When I went back the next day it was really dry and caked and the bottom paint did not come off. I am trying to to take of bottom paint from a boat from the 60s. any ideas? thanks again for this video!

Sounds like what you used was not air tight. You need to apply the stripper very thick and do it out of the sun. I used a 4 mill plastic. It needs to sit wet, the longer the better. I did notice that where the bottom paint that was not underwater when the boat sits in the water, and the paint was very dry, this method did not work well. It also did not work well on barrier coats paints. It might not work on your type of paint. 25 years ago when I had a big build up of paint that had started flaking off, and I was 25 years younger, I scrapped the paint off with a paint scrapper. www.zoro.com/hyde-paint-scraper-stiff-2-12-carbon-steel-10540/i/G4530391/?gclid=CjwKEAiA2OzDBRCdqIyIqYaaqQoSJABeJZdi-KtrllWJxnInImnaaJEki6IMlwKD1uJYRJ1QQ6p9MRoCTWHw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Did you see part 1 video? That video goes into detail on how to do it.

Is the yellow paint you applied a barrier coat? Or did you just apply a yellow ablative paint directly to the gelcoat and then add the blue ablative on top of that? I’m trying this on my 40-year-old Catalina 22, I need to get anti-fouling paint off. I have a test swatch working right now.

Eric Berger thanks. Your method works beautifully. Patience is a virtue as with most things.

How big is your boat? How much stripper (gallons?) did you need to use?
