  • If I had to create an award for the best houseplant for beginners, the humble snake plant or "Mother-In-Law's Tongue" would win it.
    You can pretty much ignore this plant for a month and it will be fine. They have a beautiful and striking appearance in your home, and even remove toxins (benzene, formaldehyde) from your home.
    Without further ado, let's get into exactly how to care for, troubleshoot, and propagate the wonderful snake plant.

    I sold my house and bought another one 2 months later so my belongings went into storage while I stayed with relatives. My beautiful snake plant and huge aloe vera went into that locker for two months and I was only able to drop by bi-weekly to water them. They turned mostly yellow and I thought they were done. It only took about 4 weeks of bright light for them both to come back to green and healthy. I was amazed.

    It’s a good idea to let tap water sit overnight, so it has a chance to dechlorinate before you water. I’m happy to know about using African soil mix for Sansevierias! 😀🌱

      Ruth Salinas I was at a plant shop today and someone said the same thing about a snake plant. One of the workers at the plant shop said that the snake plant only needs to be watered every 2-4 weeks. So if you want to keep it in a bathroom with no natural light, you can keep it in the bathroom, and then when it’s time to water it, water it, and then place it in a sunny room for day or two so it can get light, and then place it back into the bathroom. I’m not sure if that works. Lol But he said he’s done it before 🤗

      Same! Both of mine are on a mantle in a corner that doesn't get very good light at all, and only water them 1x per month. Theyre still growing beautifully and shooting up new babies! I separated 4 babies a couple months ago and gifted them to a family member and I already have more babies shooting up

    All the sansevieria varieties are always in direct sunlight in the Philippines where I live and they grow just fine. I mean you could grow a jungle with them really.

    • @epicgardening

      Yeah, especially when you plant them on the ground, they just multiply tremendously and become kinda invasive, so it’s better to contain them in pots to regulate their number. My mom planted a moonshine that has really grown so tall , it’s leaves now are so long looking like swords.

    • @arcticMonk6
      @arcticMonk6 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. As much as they are planted directed on the ground and receive direct sunlight in the Philippines, they are also subjected into that much rain during monsoon, therefore they are that much resilient. I can’t even. LOL.

    I got a cylindrica snake plant that was purchased from ikea for Christmas. Normally Ikea plants have a very short life span but I had to give this little mo-fu a bigger pot in february cause it outgrew it's small nursery pot. Now it's sitting on my sunny windostill and growing like crazy...I've never actually "cared" for it, I didn't even know it was a snake plant till I fell into the rabit whole that is plant-youtube recently. So thanks for the video, I'm happy to learn more about my little roommate and while my collection is still small I'm afraid I will become obsessed with houseplants now.

    You actually need to use a long stick (just like you would in baking) to test if the soil is dry. 2 inch isn't enough especially for plants that need to dry out between waterings.

    • @zoejaneflamingo7571
      @zoejaneflamingo7571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I agree. I've always thought you should be feeling all the way to the bottom of the pot where the roots are. I use one of those moisture/pH measuring sticks that you can buy from the garden centre.

    I have 2 snake plants on the sides of my garage in planters in FULL SUN and I live in the South where it gets extremely humid and the average temp from July to October is 92 degrees. We also have severe thunderstorms where it floods and my sansaveria get extremely drenched and let me tell you, those suckas are full, more healthy than the ones in the house and have grown so tall in 3 mths that I cant believe that they are the same ones I planted 3 mths back. So they DO very well in full sun, heck they do better.

    No disrespect to your relationship if you're in one, but I could kiss you for making these videos! I'm a complete newbie, and I just got my first set of plants settled in at home. I was using books and information online, but hadn't been fortunate enough to find your videos. You lay it out so simply, and somehow it sinks in better for me when someone's talking me through and showing me things. Other videos lose me very quickly, not getting to the good stuff fast enough, but you kept my attention and told me what I need to know. I know now that I settled my snake plant into too large a pot, but have more confidence that I set the pots up right otherwise. Hopefully the sturdy little dude will handle the extra room if I just take care of him right in other ways. I don't want to shock him by repotting him again too quickly. Another of your videos also gave me the confidence to give my poor spider plant a haircut. My plants came mail order, and the spider plant got a little beat up on the way home. I think I'll do okay with them, now, adding these videos to my list of resources, and I feel like I know better what to watch for to catch problems. Keep the good info coming!

    Hi!
    Very informative video! Thank you for sharing.
    I have a bunch of Sans; and my plants sit in a succulent and cactus mix to which I added horticultural sand and some gritty mix for better aeration and drainage. And I don't fertilize them, but amend the soil topdressing it with worm castings and some compost. And I avoid using peat moss and prefer coco cuir instead.
    But you are right: if you don't kill the plants with liquid love, they are absolutely diehard plants - almost indestructible.
    Thanks for your expertise and happy gardening!
    Greetings from Berlin, Germany!
    Marc

    I bought my snake plants for two bucks, and it was about a foot tall. It out grew the pot, and moved it into a bigger pot. It out grew that pot, and I transfered it to a bigger pot. It actually busted the next pot when it out grew that pot, I transfered three more times, and now they are six feet tall, and out growing those pots.

    Have had at least 5 different variations and overloved them all. I even successfully cutting propagated one. But alas I killed each one. Now I have 3 cylinder shaped ones of 2 varieties and promise to neglect them a bit. Thanks in advance for your advice.

    i just got a snake plant today! she looks beautiful and i hope to keep her alive. i got a terra cotta pot and i think home depot over watered it because the pot is wet on the outside. but i’m here to save her!

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's OK, terra cotta is porous so water will flow 'through' the pot walls

    Snake plants are great to set by the computer, as they detoxify the air. One study found that about 15 snake plants can purify the air of a 1600sf home.

    I love Houseplants and have several which seem to be doing well on a table right by the windows. The lightning conditions are a challenge because the only windows are north facing. Being in a condo, the deeper you go into the room away from the windows the lower the light. I would love to see a video of low light plants and their care.

      @epicgardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check out my recent video on pothos, it can handle low-light! But I will put an entire video up about low light specific plants

      Epic Gardening thanks very much. I do have a few pothos and Sansevierias. Will check out the video. Im adding plants slowly to see how the plans do in my environment.

    I hardly ever water my snake plants. I have a habit of killing my plants with too much attention. So i decided to ignore the snake plants and ignore the urge to go go near them now they doing very well.

    Thank you for these videos, very helpful. I have a couple of these plants and I may have moved them to a pot that is too large and the leaves over the year have developed a vein like look and feel and droop a bit. I know I have good drainage and I think I'm following the watering guideline with the finger measurement. Lighting is not direct but I do think what they are getting is adequate. Suggestions? Thanks!

    I just found a snake plant in the clearance section at Lowe’s! I paid $5 and it’s a pretty good size. One of the leaves is pretty dry but that’s it’s only problem!

    I'm glad I found your channel. I just started taking an interest in houseplants. I would love to see more video about different types of houseplants... especially those that are easy to take care of. Also, I have a question please. Our tap water is very hard. Can I use bottle water to water my houseplants?

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're in luck! I just started collaborating with a local nursery so you'll see a lot more awesome houseplant videos soon. I I am pretty sure most house plants will do okay with hard water, as I water mine with 400 parts per million water coming out of my tap but summer more sensitive, like a peace lily Etc

    What about the tips ??
    Browning or breaking?
    Is it true they stop growing if tips are broken?

    • @zoejaneflamingo7571
      @zoejaneflamingo7571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they grow from the base of the leaf so broken tips do not stop it growing - this is a myth :)

  • @mandyyingmiao
    @mandyyingmiao 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can also propagate by cutting the leaves into different parts, it has to be cut horizontally, and stick it in the soil with the bottom ends, it’ll grow roots :))

      Yup one of the few plants that can do a split-leaf cutting
