  • Here is a quick video of my 1954 Raleigh 32cc Cyclemaster. When I first posted this video the bike was for sale, but I've have changed my mind and I am keeping it ! Probably going to hang it up in the garage as a bit of wall art !

That should be the 25cc version my dad had one of those. The 32cc version was grey and came in a special heavy duty frame.

Hi Tom, nice to hear from you, I hope you are both well. I suspect that it is just an adjustment problem. If I were you I would do a quick check of the gearbox by removing the cable from the gearbox end. Without the cable fitted the gear selector lever spring should push the selector into 2nd gear. If you now turn the back wheel (you may have to hang the back of the bike up somehow as I think you have a mickey mouse centre stand fitted?? ) see if the selector moves from 2nd, through neutral and into 1st gear nice and smoothly. Use a dumpy flat blade screw driver to help or a dowel of wood because the cable clevis will soon hurt your thumb! If it does work nice and smoothly all is good inside the box, if not, you probably have some internal damage. If you are happy that the gears are selecting ok, move the hand selector into 2nd and refit the cable. Remove any play in the cable using the cable adjuster (handle bar end) The gears should now work ok. If not, you can adjust the outer cable slightly so that it pulls the selector into 1st a bit sooner. Another thing to check is the locking arrangement on the clutch lever. If the lever is badly worn it can move into neutral when in the selected gear. You can see 2 slots on a worn lever. A new lever should sort this out. Hope this helps, regards Mickey :-)

I will be back in the UK in mid-October looking for one of these. I intend to tour SE Asia on one of these starting in The Philippines, crazy idea maybe but I like adventure.. Whether I do this on yours here I will do it, no need for registrations or insurance eventually bringing it back to the UK. Have to find out how to get a TH-cam account.
