Definetly take two coats &2 pure wool beanies , You can dry 1 coat and beanie whilst you wear the other. I wear a wool and possum fur beanies as well. A great video . Subscribed . Paul Snow .
Another Great Video. Thanks for the winter camping hints. I Have an oil skin vest for many years now. Also dry as a bone coat. Beanies are a must, have several.
Love the video you did a great job of it. 💯 winter camping love it all the way. People think I'm crazy for doing it but your so right there just something about it and there isn't anyone around.
Yes! cold weather camping is best, especially if its a bit wet, even better in the snow. gotta be prepared though. I found a long hot water bottle works a treat. also here for a recipe ;)
Not a truer word spoken oilskin vest and coat can't go wrong. I absolutely love my oil skin vest. It's just the best investment I ever made, it paid a bit for it in the beginning, but it pays for itself over and over again. Thanks video and see the next one.
Good tips. I love my winter camping. In fact, the worse the weather the more I like it. Chucking a shovel load of coals & a couple of hot rocks to retain heat just behind your chair will keep your back & bum warm. Very good for those of us with a dodgy back. A pair of fingerless mechanics gloves are very helpful to.
@garysheppard4028 I know that's supposed to be a thing but in 48 years of almost weekly camping & sterilising rocks for use in thousands of aquariums I can honestly say I've never had it happen or met anyone else who has. More chance of meeting a bunyip IMO
@@gqwarrior6694 I've never experienced it, mainly because I've never done it. I've only seen it on TH-cam. Maybe it was "manufactured" or maybe not. But I wouldn't want to be near one when it lets go. Probably one of those "Low probability/high consequence events" so I'll play it safe.
@garysheppard4028 Each to their own but perhaps this will give you a different perspective. There are millions upon millions of stone fireplaces in homes around the world that are mostly built using granite & river stone with no issue. You should do what you are comfortable with though 🍻
My sleep setup is: yoga mat with foil lining, 3cm air mattress, "removalists" blanket around the mattress, sleeping bag on top, and when it's really cold a woollen blanket over the top. Cosy af.
spot on with ur comments on clothing, I'd say get a hotwater bottle 2, cheap and they work, I have an electric blanket like yours and it just pissed me off, the bloody plug would move in the socket and then the blanket cuts off, the old hotwater bottle stuffed in the sleeping bag worked better and cost $12 heheh. good vid mate thanks
Great video mate, thanks for sharing ... earned yourself an instant subscribe for this one. Have to take some time and look back through the channel, cheers.,
Mate, great video and I love going out in winter for all the reasons you list. My only concern with your vid is the amount of dry leaves laying around your fire. Please keep at least 3 metres clear around your fire, it just takes a bad bit of wood to blow out and your whole camp site is gone with those leaves under everything, including your fire.
I go camping with my dog, mostly autumn and winter only, here in OZ, I do it mostly in the New England, I have a spot where it gets down to -8C nearly all the time. I dont have a fire or heating or an electric blanket, I do have a -30F down sleeping bag, and a -15F sleeping bag for my dog, it covers both of us. I don't have any heating in the camper or tent whatsoever, I am usually out for 6 weeks, and after the first week of cold nights me and the dog are used it. It is mainly cause I am old, and need to get up to use a "P" bottle a couple of times at night, so I want to be able to handle the cold at that time. Am also ex-army,(1 TPT Squadron/161 Recce Squadron/ 1 ATSR) slept many a freezing cold nite on exercise and or training, maybe that's why I can still handle the cold today. EDIT: Not to say I wont use heating but it has to be at least -10 C before I start thinking about that.
I have an older version, the new ones seem better. Its a Kickass one. Plugs into cig lighter socket. Its 12volt. Uses bugger all power. Mine only has a timer to go up to 40 minutes before it shuts off. The new ones go to 120 mins.
Wasnt sure. Had to read the terms and conditions. No, the answer is no, its not a prerequisite. But if you come and visit when Im not recording videos... guess what Im wearing...
Yep Ross has it right. Summer wt for summer....or just a mozzie net, and winter wt or bivvy for winter. Rolling up in a hootchie or plastic bag....or even sometimes in a gortex bivvy makes you sweat, then you fucken freeze. As a young digger my gun SGT told me.... not matter how fucked you are always set up your hootchie.
Great advice and helpful information!
Me too mate, winter is the BEST for camping. There’s no bad camping trip, just bad preparation. Greta clip mate and new subscriber too. Cheers 👍
Cheers mate, 100% on the prep. Thanks for the sub!
Back in the mid 80s when I was in 1RAR, we used to roll up inside the hootchie with our sleeping bag and it worked.
We had those bags in our vehicles. Same principle, different battalion bro. Thanks for watching mate
Well done I hope first time camper’s watch this and learn from you 10/10
Thanks mate
G'day mate, just found your channel and clocked your TPE sticker, respect brother, vet here too

Great vid. Yep the beanie is the icing on the cake when camping in the cold. It’s a game changer.
It really is!
Some great fishing in this vid 👍🍺

Well I have never heard of a long hot water bottle before. I just Googled it. Looks better than the regular one for sure mate.
Great video. Thanks mate.
Glad you enjoyed it
Summer sleeping bag for winter, and vice versa. That’s how I remember it. Just found your channel, approved. Cheers

100% mate. they are not cheap, but its a long term investment
Great hints. Thanks mate.
No problem 👍

Someone else has mentioned this too. Im going to have to try it, thanks mate
Not the exploding rock type though.
Especially river rocks.

Thanks mate. In the dry , or when there is any doubt, I do that. When I recorded this video the ground and leaves were soaking wet.
yes I remember 1 of summer weight sleeping bag, with my blow ups those were the days
HAHAHA

Nice mate, if it works, it works. Why change it? 1 TPT Squadron/161 Recce Squadron at Holsworthy? sees you around my time I reckon.

Great video mate! What brand is your oil skin vest and where did you get it from?
Thanks mate. Its a didgeridoonas one
How does your elect blanket work and does it use much power ?
I have an older version, the new ones seem better. Its a Kickass one. Plugs into cig lighter socket. Its 12volt. Uses bugger all power. Mine only has a timer to go up to 40 minutes before it shuts off. The new ones go to 120 mins.
Great video;some good tips. sorry if I have missed it in one of your previous videos, what brand is your portable fire pit ?
Cheers
Thanks mate, I use a Darche one.
I concur with everything you said, what brand is your oilskin vest?
Thanks mate. Its a Didgeridoonas one.
Travelled round south island nz july 2023. Jucy camper , slept butt naked , outside temp 2 to 5 degrees. All good until you needed a slash lol
So what's the secret recipe for your fire lighting paste?
Nothing too secret about it really. But I have just seen a few videos on it on YT. So I will make a video about it soon. Its a poor mans napalm.
Is it a pre requisite to have a stockman’s style hat and driza-bone vest to go 4WD/camping ???
Wasnt sure. Had to read the terms and conditions. No, the answer is no, its not a prerequisite. But if you come and visit when Im not recording videos... guess what Im wearing...
diesel and soap?
Hmmm I will have to try. Im not sure yet.
Three or four hot coals under the camp chair will keep your backside warm when sitting around the fire.
Don’t need any more than that.
I have never done that. Im going to have to try it mate. Thanks for that
I was told the other day that hot ashes under a chair or a stretcher will make a huge difference too.
Yep Ross has it right. Summer wt for summer....or just a mozzie net, and winter wt or bivvy for winter. I found the same with a bivvy bag. They were all the rage back then. Spent a few $$ on a gortex one, sweated my arse off and froze.
Don't much believe in clearing your area for the fire, do you.
