Shopping for the inexpensive pens is a lot of fun! In my experience, the quality of the paper is more important than the price of the pen.

That seems to be my experience as well.
So many factors but paper is so important. I've experimented with various ink / paper /nib combos and it really varies a LOT. My first $100 + pen was a Platinum Procyon "Modern Maki-e" Medium but VERY fine writer & poor ink flow. I was upset and wanted to return it, but I loved the feel of the barrel (similar to this #1 1862) and one-of-a-kind design so much I ordered the cheapest Procyon I could find with M nib thinking I'd swap if it was better. That pen writes like a dream with Platinum B/B cartridge so I kept the org nib in the "Maki-e" and over time it is working better with Pilot black ink. I learned I like a Fine point on Tamoe River and other Japanese paper. This "Chai" 1862 feels and writes great on that type of paper. Experiment! That's the fun 🖋

Absolutely! I have a $30 pen that’s a dupe for a $300+ pen. I wanted to be sure I’d like the weight and the vac filler mechanism before making the big purchase. I did so I bought the name brand pen. And I find myself always reaching for the dupe. There is something for everyone in this hobby!
I just received my milk tea aka "My Chai" pen and LOVE IT! The weight, feel and appearance are all so satisfying.

I do appreciate the viewer who gave voice to what I also feel about the cost of many of the items shared on You Tube. Most of us can not afford $800 pens, a $1500 pair of pants or multiple vacations to exotic places every year. It’s not that I don’t want influencers to have expensive or beautiful things, I think I am more affected by how they normalize these expenses. I think your channel is a great combination of giving a nod to both purchasing used and/or affordable items and purchasing luxuries when your budget allows. I didn’t hear her comment as “not nice” but more a reflection of her frustration about what she may want but can’t have. Thanks so much for this video. I purchased my favorite pen in a small stationary store in Amsterdam years ago and at the time it cost about $7 US dollars.
I agree with your comment about "normalizing" excessive spending -- some viewers just need to avoid seeing that and should stay away from it I also think there's a right way and a wrong way to share one's new treasures. TH-camrs who keep declaring they're on a no-spend or whine about what they can't afford and then trot out the latest $600 pen they "couldn't resist" do annoy me. That just strikes me as insensitive to those who cannot make those decisions. If you have those resources and choose to spend them on high-end pens, at least own up to it.
@@marilyngardner4269 This was the catalyst in my decision to unsubscribe to a lot of channels that I use to regularly enjoy. No offense to people that like purchasing high end pens or spending more than the average person. It’s just not for me and many like us. Some of us truly are taking our goals on not spending excessively seriously and content like that makes it impossible. I’m glad I’m not alone in that 😊
@@MummyBrown I'm glad I'm not alone too. Just watched another video today from someone who indicated that a pen was too expensive but that they had to have it anyway because they just needed it in their collection based on color. This is delivered in a way that's supposed to be disarming, disingenuous or cute. I'm sure this is a nice person, but they're talking to a select group of folks who can empathize and I can't. I don't need to see that kind of content because it messes with my head. A wise person said, "Avoid anything that interferes with your peace."
Yep! I get it! I have 3 "splurge" pens in the $80 range (but I paid about half because I'm a bargain hunter). That's got to be about it for me on our single-income household. It's a hobby that can be as expensive as you want or as cheap as you need. t's about the writing for me and not so much the pens itself.
I get why people make comments like that sometimes. These are challenging times for some but I still enjoy when you share even your more expensive pens so don't stop. I am happy when others can have lovely things. I have seen fountain pens for $4,000 and much more online, so your budget actually seems reasonable. I also know you have shared some of your budget friendly pens and I enjoy those too. This hobby is for most everyone on any budget. I started out with a TWSBI Eco and I thought that was expensive at the time. But I quickly moved on to Benu and then finally to my Pilot Custom 823. And I'm happy at that level, and probably won't go much higher. I love your channel and the juicy broads too. This is innocent fun for fountain pen lovers at all levels and we need respite like this during these crazy times. Your videos always bring a little more color and joy.

My go to everyday pen is a Pilot Metropolitan. Fine nib. Cheap and great writing.
Lori, before I started loving and ordering fountain pens I had never paid even $5.00 for a pen of any type. I have fallen slightly down the rabbit hole, I'm still holding onto the rim at the beginning. I have now paid I think $110. as my top pen purchase to date but I am contemplating a Pilot vanishing point for $168. I want the convenience for note taking but I am too afraid to take a pen that expensive out of the house because I had a $15.00 one stolen and I am still stinging from it a few years down the road. I am happy to watch your videos and I'm happy that you have a budget way beyond mine because if I'm not mistaken I think I get a little dopamine hit just dreaming of having some of the pens you share. :) You are the person I love to hear share about pens, your voice and personality are so sweet, and I NEVER feel that you are bragging. You are sharing and educating; I could listen to you all day long!!! I don't have my own Amazon account for a reason, I am so impressionable and would run right to Amazon to order my next dozen fountain pens because you told me all about your impression of them. That is good enough for me! My son lives with me and I share the expense of his Amazon membership but my husband uses it. I am afraid I'd let go of the rim of that fountain pen rabbit hole all together! ROFLMHO!!! Keep these videos going, please! I think I should visit your Juicy Broads site, I just don't think to do it or I would already have been there.
The Majohn A2 is a dupe for the vanishing point and I really like it. It's around $30 US on Amazon. I have seen them cheaper also. I think it depends of the seller and color. I have the black one with the clip. They come in so many different colors. I have been tempted to get a few more colors.
There is also the Majohn A1. I believe the difference is girth. The A1 is a little bigger... I think.
Canadian here! Things are getting pretty wild for us in terms of the value of a buck. Our exchange rate is really not good so a $13 USD pen is $17.50 CAD. The comment, while unnecessary, was likely just expressing our general frustration about the state of things here. It's frustrating to see an 'inexpensive' pen shared only to look on Canadian Amazon and see the price difference we have to swallow. For instance, Kakunos are $20 on Amazon for us. Which is still fairly affordable but couple that with the state of our current grocery prices - that's the same as what it costs for a family size (roughly 2 lbs) tray of ground beef. It's just crazy times. Don't take it personally - your videos are some of my favourites :) Keep sharing at all price points. It's nice to dream haha.

This was a subject that needed to be addressed-thank you. The cost or value of a fountain pen is irrelevant; what matters is how much pleasure and joy it gives the user.
Love your channel. I can’t afford a lot of things I see people talking about online, but I enjoy watching. It’s interesting to see what’s out in the world. I also enjoy when you find/feature bargains (on both your channels). FYI the set of 2 Jinhao 82 in one particular color is $6.49 - limited time ($12.99 regular price) as I’m checking at this moment). Love my Asvine V126(s)!!! Extremely affordable vacuum filler that writes sooo smooth!!! I bought 1 and immediately fell in love and immediately bought the other 5 color (and nib) options!!! I think the fine and/or medium nib with a wet ink is just sublime! Highly recommend!!!
Yes! Asvine V126 is my favorite and it is less than 30 dollars on Amazon.

Excellent list. I love my Hongdian’s Forest in Blue a lot. Been wanting to get the #1 list you mentioned. I was going to get the yellow Hongdian’s hooded nib one as well for sketching. Love my Jinhao’s X750 from 10 yrs ago with the Goulet pen #6 two tone 1.1mm broad nib.
1. After two purges, my pen collection only has a few pens in this price level. They are all excellent in one way or another, to still be around, and recommendable without reservation:

2. Many German brands make inexpensive pens with "A" nibs, intended for grade school learners. If you can tolerate the kiddie esthetic, these are bombproof, reliable, easy to use pens. As I enjoy the aesthetic, I have 8 different models. A few look reasonably normal, including my favorite, the Pelikan Pelikano jr, which I used just this morning.
I use a Kakuno with the Con 70 converter and a B stub calligraphy nib.
Jinhao 82 pens also come in a mini version with beautiful.
colours with extra fine , fine or medium nibs.
Jinhao 100 centennial pens are wonderful
I also love my Jinhao X350 because it's metal with a screw cap.
The converter of the 9019 screws in and out by the way.
Standard international cartridges just push in and pull out however, just so you know.

Don't take comments like that personally. Perhaps the person didn't mean it the way if might have come across. I enjoy the enthusiasm you have for the hobby and are able to share with your audience. I love watching your videos, no matter what price range the fountan pens are in.
Everyone needs to decide for themselves what they are willing and able to spend on a pen. I have some more expensive pens, but I am enjoying my chinese make pens a lot too. They are often better than their reputation of being just cheap. If one is open minded and willing to give them a chance there are many gems to be discovered in chinese pen shops.
Thanks for the tip regarding the Hongdian 1862 - I hadn't seen them before and just ordered all 4 colours.
btw, the Asvine P20 is a gorgeous pen you should give a try.
I have plenty of Jinhao 82 pens. I like how they come in different colors. I just purchased that last pen you mentioned in Milk Tea. As of the expensive pens topic, I do have 2-3 expensive pens in my collection. Those range between $150 to $175. But that’s about 3 pens I have. Those were a treat for me. I have not went over those prices though. I try not to down people on what they spend a lot of money on. Some people will spend a couple hundred on a purse, a pair of shoes, or even to get their hair done. To each is own. If you have it like that, congratulations to you. Others may not which is ok too 😊

A penpal gifted me my first modern fountain pen; i used it until I moved and after it was packed away, I forgot about it. I pulled it out six years later and it wrote immediately. The pen? The super cheap Pilot Preppy with De Atramentis scented ink in Black Roses. It's not my style, but dang if it's not reliable! Always in rotation is my Jinhao x450; it's another reliable writer but more classically styled and heavy (which I prefer), and it has a snap cap and metal body. Pilot Metropolitan should be on the list! It has a metal body and is a solid performer. I got lucky and got the $85 Monteverde Innova Formula M in bronze for around $20 in a sale, so y'all don't forget to price-hunt the good stuff for cheap-pen prices!
I do like to know the cost of the pens you review, as it’s part of the process and knowing if it’s in my budget. People will always complain whatever you do. You earn your funds, so its up to you how you spend it -not them. Enjoy :)

Hi Lori, that was a very interesting and enjoyable video. I have three of your Top 5, the Jinhao 82, X159 and a Preppy. I also own one of your honourable mentions, the Jinhao 100 Centennial. All are nice pens. It is also worth looking at the secondhand market for vintage pens. For example I picked up a gold nibbed Parker Duofold (English version) at below your $20 limit. Often there are sales and some very good pens are reduced in price for no known reason. As you rightly said, this hobby can be enjoyed at any price level. I find nowadays I buy fewer Chinese pens and would rather use the money I've saved to put towards a better pen.
Another fantastic low cost pen is the Zebra V301. This is a real fountain pen, not a disposable, and it’s only $6. A smooth writer.
One of hardest fountain to clean if you change ink. The Parker 61 is much easier to clean. Also if you change ink get a wet ink.

I have expensive pens but I’m excited to try that Platinum Preppy. I’ve just always overlooked this option.
Just watched Sunday (4.28.24) and immediately ordered the milk tea "Chai" your #1 pen... now it's HERE. So beautiful. It reminds me of a Pelikan / Platinum Chai pen mash-up -- PERFECT. I first dipped in FWP Blushing Mushroom (which is NOT purple, but very similar to color of the barrel.) Too light for me and #5 F point felt "rough." Then I dipped into a mix I made of a light brown and the FWP and it's heavenly... writing smooth and delightful in my Stalogy! Perfect match with a hint of shimmer. 💯 I'll say more below. Thank you Lori for showing us options in ALL price ranges. 🤟
I mention my Procyon Platinum pens (on the paper comment), but it was a cheap Preppy with that silky black Carbon ink that made me think the Procyon would be a dreamy writer in a better body. For whatever reason, the .05 Preppy nib is practically perfect especially with their Carbon ink cart... definitely like "butta" 😎 That solid white body version would be a great pen since those Carbon ink cartridges are mess-free and so smooth! LOVE stationery stuff -- journals and pens especially. ENJOY pen pals! 💖
One of my best pens that writes as well as the gold nibs I have is the Moonman P136. It is a piston filler and writes like a dream -- so smooth. I do have a medium nib. I also love Pen BBS for another inexpensive pen.
You are right. The Moonman P136 is a superb pen for the money. Mine has the stub nib and I love it!
Platinum made a Preppy for the Kokuyo business and it is called ' KOKUYO X PLATINUM PREPPY PERPANEP ', the fountain pen you had as your #2.
Platinum also made a Preppy fot the MUJI business, same color as for Kokuyo but the shape is a bit more square.
Both are grand Preppy fountain pens and yes the color is nice and the hand feel is nicer than a regular Preppy.

I love seeing pens of all price levels. I have everything from $3 Temu pens to closer to $300 "special" pens. I love looking for bargains secondhand & that has served me very well to be able to get some amazing pens, even with gold nibs, both vintage & new, in a price range that is more in my wheelhouse. So seeing some of the pricier pens gives me something to be on the lookout for a bargain! But regardless, I can live vicariously through all of the content creators who share some of these higher end pens! ❤

@@timewithtata8004 I tune in regularly ever since I found your channel! I have always loved fountain pens but only dove headlong down the Rabbit Hole over the past year. My very first one many years ago was purchased with a staples gift card, I think it was a Parker 🤔 since then I've discovered so many wonderful pens at every price point. Some of my favorite everyday writers are some of the least expensive ones, such as the Pilot Prera. I have turned into a bit of a Pilot fan-girl because their quality at ANY level is superb. Likewise for Platinum. I haven't tried the Preppy, but have several Prefountes, a Plasir & Procyon & will be receiving my first 3776 in a few days! Next on deck, I believe will be a Sailor so that I can compare the "big 3".
I love your videos! And I feel like there are already so many “budget” pen videos why even make a comment like that lol? If you don’t have the money for a certain pen, doesn’t mean you can’t take in all the other valuable info in your videos lol.
That comment wasn’t pleasant and I’m so inspired by how you chose to respond. It’s true that people are sent to a dark place by the challenges of financial constraints or see more expensive things and feel bad about themselves for not being able to have those things and experiences. Lots of social media is designed to trigger that and it’s sad. When those people target the channel hosts with their bad feelings, it’s so unfair. Your response was great. There’s plenty to enjoy and we can celebrate all of it! 😊

I didn't see the comment as that horrible. The person was feeling frustrated. But if you're going to be bothered by the discretionary income of others, than watching TH-camrs who collect fountain pens is not always a good idea. Or, find the TH-camrs who specialize in less costly pens (there are a few, although one recently decided to stop making pen videos). I imagine it's the same in any hobby that comes with a high price tag sometimes.

I’m going to guess that comment was intended to be mean or cruel but was just expressing the stress many feel about the finances they face. They want to enjoy this hobby but a lot of the “cool and fun stuff” can feel out of reach. I’ve had a lucky year and have been able to acquire many very nice pens. But I have to always keep in mind that buying some of these pens would cause many others financial hardship.
I enjoy your content and I understand many see spending even $20 for a fountain pen as nuts. That said, the regular cheap preppy is a great pen for a fiver. Add an o-ring and some silicon to eyedropper it with any ink. The great thing about fountain pens is they are available for a wide range of prices and the cost of entry can be less than a latte at Starbucks. And the preppy writes very well, sometimes better than pens costing 20-40 times more.
FYI Kakuno can take a Con-70 converter, giving it a good ink capacity like an Explorer and Custom 74, though I prefer the Explorer a shade more. Preppy Wa edition have artistic designs, great writers for the money.

I need to look into a Parker Duofold. And yup, recently like 5 days ago, I experienced a Jinhao roulette with the 82 & just about to throw it into a wall or fix its nib which I can do pretty well. It did not write at all & I was going to use it for a St. Patrick’s Day. Nope. Total fail. 😂
I’m beginning to find that I truly enjoy the $35-50 fountain pens range. One that i recently resurrected from 10 yrs ago collection time is a Monteverde “Artista Crystal” with an Edison nib in medium. It’s surprisingly nice with a J Herbin purple ink and I totally forgot about it for 10 yrs. 😂.

Oh! So much that engaged me in this review! I introduce friends to fountain pens with the Jinhao 82 and a small bottle of Diamine Oxford Blue. My first Hong Dian was the 1843 Navigator, which is very much like your 1862. Loved it; gave it to a person who was intrigued. I have a Jinhao 100 Centennial Frankenpen with their 14k nib, which is wonderful. Mine looks like the Delta DV Original with black and orange. So does its Frankenpen, in photographic negative with a steel nib, that I gave to a friend. The great thing about the Chinese, Indians, and Japanese seems to be that these cultures have enough people to keep providing affordable pens since there still is demand.

I got an Asvine P20 in March and like it. Asvine has a good nib. Hope you get one to try. It's a piston filler.

Your top pick looks similar to Graf von Faber-Castel. I am glad there is an inexpensive version. With light colors I am always afraid of staining the light color with ink.
I LOVEEEE the Hong Dian 1862! I ordered the 2 tan colored ones. I also love the Jinhao 82.

Fountain pens are great office gifts. Usually, I buy some when souvenir shopping on vacation. My coworkers are either losing pens or using pens so fast that the ink runs out in a month's worth of paperwork.
I like how you addressed that viewer's comment. I like the Jinhao Centennial. I have it in red and multicolor colorways. They write beautifully, but are a little bit wide for my hands. I have yet to try their Sailor Pro Gear Slim knock-offs partially because I truly love my real Sailor Pro Gear Slim pens. I use them on a daily basis. But eventually, I'll give them a try, too.
Oh, and I own a few Kawecos...They're great for a new fountain pen user.

I enjoy your videos a lot and feel that you do share a wide variety of price points. My favorite lower priced is the Kakuno and also Kaweco Sport in medium.I haven’t tried Jinhao or the Preppy. I didn’t care for Lamy.
The hongdian 1862 cocoa looks so so good!! I’m hoping that one is the same as the shape of heart XD I prefer that brown to the green tea version (which looks more of a green grey). Thanks for sharing your top 5 and your experiences with them! I agree, there’s no buyers remorse at all with cheaper pens ^_^ but the enjoyment long term lasts longer, at least for me, with pens I love to look at, whether that be expensive or a bit cheaper.
This is why I buy Noodler’s pens. They aren’t expensive. I can tinker with them and make them write the way I want them to write. I’m always buying a new color of the Ahab, Konrad or Standard (Nib Creeper). I use them mostly for doing the line work on my watercolor or gouache paintings. I’m also a big fan of Noodler’s inks. I’ve got a lot of inks from different makers. Diamine, Monteverde, Organics Studio, Pilot, etc… But I keep going back to Noodler’s inks because of the low cost and the fact that you get a free “Charlie” eyedropper pen with many of their 4.5 oz bottles of ink.
I own several pens from Fountain Pen Revolution which are mostly my daily use pens. I currently have 2 Jaipur V2 ebonite pens inked up that I bought during one of their buy one/get one sales. I also have 2 Himalaya V2 ebonite pens with the FPR Ultra Flex nibs that I got during a BOGO sale. FPR sells some really nice pens that they stand behind 100%.
My daily carry pen is a brass Kaweco Sport. It’s an absolute bullet proof ink pen. I bought some empty short cartridges and fill them with my favorite Noodler’s red ink, Tsvetayeva from their Russian series.
Great videos - could you share where to buy resale items???? I know Ebay is one not sure if there are some sites that specifically cater to fountain pens.
I love pens mine are more juvenile like hello kitty, ones with some kind of character on tip of the clicker etc. I love jelly roll pens metallic and sparkle 😊😊😊 pens, but I also love pens that write smooth. Thank you for this video I'm drawn towards the preppy pen!!!

I agree with your choices. I own several of each. I have some expensive pens,but like buying cheap pens. I'm often surprised. However I always recommend Lamy Safaris or Pilot Metropolitan for newbies. Super reliable. Pilot Preppy's are much nicer than Explorers IMHO. Of the Chinese pens I think the Hong Dian pens are superior, but they do cost a bit more.
I started with Hongdian black forest and I LOVE them and I have Jinhaos like the one you showed and its sailor dupe look alike which I also LOVE, but then I SLOWLY expanded into kawecos, sailors, benu, and omg i just love fountain pens in general. I highly recommend the Jinhaos and Hongdians as a beginner 🖤

I just ordered the Hongdian 1862 after seeing your reel on instagram. I also have several Jinhaos which I really like and numerous Kawecos…. I also have a couple of PGS, a Leonardo, a Tibaldi, Twsbis Conklin, Pilot VP etc etc…. a mix of cheaper pens with a few specials, but no high end price point pens…. I really don’t want to go there, however much I love seeing them on TH-cam. I agree with others on here, there are some lovely pens at all different prices. I love all of mine.❤️🖊❤️

i was searching for the kaküno online and i found this black forest one and looked at it, while looking you said black forest and i turned back to see what you were showing and saw the exact same pen im so weirded out its happening now the second time in 3 days. im already watching a video and while looking on amazon i see something on amazon and exactly 2 seconds later it is mentioned in the same video that im watching at the same time.. The Preppy is top notch. I started buying them years ago when they were only $3, but had a much cheaper look. The fact that they come with a cartridge of ink makes them an outstanding buy. The Platinum cartridges are large capacity too. I refill the cartridge when needed. The Pilot Varsity is a nice intro pen that is considered disposable. The nib Pilot uses doesn’t fit any other pen and the inside is an absorbent sponge like material. It’s a good pen to use to introduce someone to fountain pens and you can get a variety pack of different ink colors. It writes smoothly just like any Pilot.
I have used pilot varsity fountain pens, but only for travel and places a nicer pen would get damaged. They have a medium nib and decent ink capacity, but the disposable aspect is not so good as I'd rather not add to the trash. I bought a 2 pack of Jinhao 51A pens that came with converters. They are my travel, knock abouts now. They are very similar/copy to a Parker 51. One has better nib than the other as far as smooth writing. A nice choice under $20 if you like a thinner light weight pen or want to test feel that size pen before you spend money on the Parker.
Thank you for an enjoyable video! I have 5 of the 9 pens you mention. The Preppy is one of my favorite pens regardless of price and like you, I was happy to find the solid white Perpanep collab version. I lost twice at Jinhao roulette with the 82, one nib useless. Ordered a Goulet/Jowo replacement nib and now have a fantastic $25 pen 😎. Overall I find the Chinese brands to have the more interesting designs but my Pilot and Platinum pens are better writers.
I got that Jinhao that looks like the Laban acrylic because I couldn't afford the Laban. I do genuinely love it! Mines a medium and it writes fantastically.
Platinum Prefounte is around 10€ and the Preppy's big sister. It is as reliable as thr Preppy, butbhas a sturdier resin material. It is opaque, comes in blacks, blues, greens. Reliable Platinum nibs and a bit more elegant than the clear Preppy (which I also love!). An original brand, a super nib, it never dries up. Highly recommended!
This is such an on time video as I am a newbie to fountain pens. I have seen the Sailor Four Season pens on Amazon for 73.00. Do you think these pens are legit?

Because it wasn’t. Simply asking for reviews for budget pens its all thats needed, instead of trying to guilt or shame.
The comment can be perceived in multiple ways -like someone said earlier, the person’s comment may just be more of them releasing their frustration about not being able to afford expensive pens, or it can be perceived as assuming that Lori only likes to share expensive pens. Adding “I gotta buy food” can be taken as a silly joke or as judgement on Lori being well off and making it hard on the viewer to have to watch that Lori is doing well and can afford food and high end pens. In either situation, it’s generally not so nice. It’s not mean, but it’s not nice either. I think Lori’s feeling towards the comment is justified, she puts hard work into her career and putting out great videos for us and it probably hurts to hear that her video made someone feel bad or negative. The viewer’s comment could have been worded better to convey the intention of the comment.
I thought the comment was not that bad, although possibly an expression of frustration. I have this reaction to a few TH-camrs in the fountain pen community too, but I just don't watch them if I don't enjoy their content. Everyone has a right to spend their money as they choose, and if what they're doing makes me feel bad for any reason (comparing to my own finances, or environmental waste, or showcasing costly pens when that money could go to helping the less fortunate), I just step away. There are times certain videos hit me wrong, and 3-4 TH-camrs I avoid completely. As Lori said, no point in doing this if it's not fun.

You missed the Diplomat Magnum. Available for around 20.-$ at least in europe. It is some kind of a special because at first sight, it may mislead and be misidentified as a ballpen. And: It isn't a dupe, and a beautiful Writer.
And you are right: I enjoy my cheaper pens more than the expensive ones. It's good, not having to worry about how much money there is in your hand when writing, filling up or cleaning a pen. Expensive Pens are fine, but I mostly keep them stored safely, in some cases never used. That tough isn't what pens are made for.
The mid range is somehow optimal, lets say pens under 100.-$ or under 150.-$. It's fun to use them, and they mostly do not look like a beginners pen. Not so expensive that one wouldn't dare to use them, and not so cheap that it feels like a ballpen worth a few cts. So, perfect for daily writing that feels just a little bit privileged. Just enough to enjoy a special Moment in everyday life.
Also I do not like chinese pens, apart from TWSBI. They at least have their own and original design. But that has more political reasons than others. I do not like pseudo-democracies, and want to do what I can for not making them a world power. That wouldn't be a bright future, I think.

I love Jinhao pens. With a low price, a decent nib, a classic design, and a converter, it’s really hard to beat the value. I got a Jinhao 100 and put a Kaigelu nib on it (also bought on Amazon) and it writes buttery smooth. I just can’t complain anything about it, especially the converter. Did I mention they come with a converter? Most converters cost 7~12 dollars, which is more expensive than most Jinhao pens, which come with converters!

The hongdian you love, looks very much like a Graf Von Faber Castell Tamitio dupe. Or even the Faber Castell Writink pen (Faber Castell has quite a variety of pens with almost the same silhouette). But it looks like it has enough difference to be called "very inspired". As I don't own one, I cannot be sure of course.
I personally have a serious problem with dupes. Anyone who works in some sort of legitimate production will a problem with that. I run an industrial farming business; and it is extremely high cost to actually legally, ethically and sustainably produce anything. And whenever I have to upgrade or renew machinery or get into new equipment for starting up something new it can quickly become a financial nightmare. Not only is it financially challenging but any novelty will also require either new employees or employee training, most probably apropriate insurances etc etc. All that to say that any legitimate production will come with a price tag that will reflect on the end product. This is the first part of the reason I will not knowingly ever purchase from a 'brand' I actually know 'copies' a legitimate brands very hard worked on (and this part is some of the higher cost in making anything btw) models. The second part is that to be able to make something so cheaply when it's og is in the hundred $ range, you have to cut costs in the labor side of things as well which makes things even worse in my opinion. That is called modern slavery; and although this practice is much more known in the fashion industry, it happens everywhere.
This is a hobby. İt is not a need, it is a want and a luxurious one at that. You cannot cry about expense when you are into a hobby. Besides, as you pointed out, there are amazing og starter pens for very good prices from great manufacturers like Pilot, Platinum, Sailor, Pelikan, Lamy, Kaweco, TWSBİ, Faber Castell etc. İf you look into these mostly old companies, their know-how and productions are not limited to FPs; and that is one of the main reasons you can get certain pens for very competitive prices. The more affordable pens are also more geared towards students; that's why you'll find fun colours, or 'juvenile' nibs etc on them. İn my student days, the Parker Vector was the pen we used and I still have one of them. I don't really write with it anymore but I used that pen for at least 4-5 years with the quink cartridges without even cleaning it. İt wrote just fine and still writes just fine.
Finally I would like to add that the vintage pen world is truly wonderful. Especially for you guys since you get to have so many pen shows. İt is possible to get a piece of beautiful history restored and tuned just for you for a good price.
There is always a way to get something you want without braking the bank (whatever your price point is). The good old way is to actually save up for something good that you find value in even if it is not a need or must. Unfortunately this is not very popular these days. But still there are good products at good value. We just need to look around for them. I think we very often forget that a too good to be true price tag most probably is too good to be true. Meaning that it comes with a bagage of things we wouldn't necessarily support or agree with hidden in that great deal price tag

Im curioud about the Jinhaos- i have their Shark pen and I like it, but it does feel pretty cheap in the hand. I love my kakuno tho 😅
This is a great subject, since you often feature somewhat more expensive pens. That having been said, while I’m all for being considerate of others, whatever you spend on your hobbies is your own business. I’m sorry that comment was projected onto you like that. You definitely have a higher budget than I do, but I don’t let that sort of thing bother me - and even if it did, that wouldn’t be your responsibility.
Thanks for all these thoughtful in depth notes on these pens. I enjoy listening to all opinions on pens regardless of their price….there’s always something to learn. It’d be great if you could hold the pen still or so that we could actually look at it. Your hands were moving so much that I had to stop looking and just listen (motion sickness). I could not really appreciate the pen as it was moving about so much.

Please done feel like their comment is the consensus. Even if it was, there’s a more tactful way to ask for other content or look for content more fitting. I do have a couple more expensive pens and I had to save to get them, but I will never begrudge a person who chooses to spend their money how they want to and love using what they paid for. Oh yeah!! I like the Preppy way more than the Varsity. I like the feel of the preppy nib much more. I only tried one Varsity, so maybe I got an “off” nib, but I’m ok using my Preppy.

On the Pilot Varsity: I bought a few to try and I thought they were awful! The felt cheap (cheaper than the Preppy) and wrote awful! It felt like you were writing with a nail! Preppy for me, no contest!

What Does *DUPE* mean ?
Checking my dictionary , it says "deceive; trick." I can't see the connection of this word, to a Fountain pen..lol

I think "Dupe" is short for "Duplicate". If you are new to this hobby you will find some pen manufacturers will copy or produce a duplicate of an original design from another pen company. For example the Jinhao X159 mentioned in the video is a duplicate of a more expensive Montblanc pen and the Jinhao 82 is a duplicate of a famous Sailor pen. In this case the "Dupe" is not meant to deceive or trick the buyer as the makers name is on the pen and in the advertisement. There is a darker side to this where some pens are real fakes. The fakes will actually have the original manufacturers name on the pen, the correct logo and even a perfect fake gift box.
Thank you for adding some chapters here for me and for yoru thoughtful comment. I have definitely had far more critical comments on TH-cam. I guess I was just feeling sensitive. I never want anyone to feel bad about their collection or the hobby in general after watching one of my videos.

I think I lean toward piston fillers but I'm learning that I like them more with ink windows and not all of my piston fill pens have them! Cartridge converter pens are easy and typically more affordable, but not all pens are sold with a converter so that can be frustrating.
By DUPE I just mean a "copy cat" version. Creating a video that includes fountain pen slang and terms would be really helpful! Great idea!

I agree with others who think that the commenter was more voicing frustration than trying to be mean. Don't get me wrong, I love drooling over Pilot's Namiki Emperor Maki-e and Chinkin pens that are handmade by artisans and each one takes months to make....and they also sell for $7k-16k, but even the Vanishing Point (which I'd love to get) is well out of my price point. I haven't used the Preppy, but I started with Varsity pens b/c I wanted something super cheap where I didn't have to worry about ink or anything to get started. I would recommend them for someone who's really unsure if they want to get into fountain pens, but I don't use them now because they're disposable/not refillable. Once I knew I could write with a fountain pen without getting ink everywhere (I'm a lefty) and that I liked the way it felt, I started using other pens. I like my Kakuno well enough, but the only one available at the time was extra fine, which is VERY fine, so I'd like to try a fine nib on it, which I generally do well with. I LOVE my Jinhao Mako pens (which I don't think are a dupe). I got a set of like 12 for $19 on Amazon. I suspect you wouldn't like them much, as they're very kid-ish (they look like mako sharks! I love them!!), but like other Jinhao's they come with converters and are a bunch of different colors with a clear section to see ink levels. They are plastic but pretty durable, no clip but the shark fin works as a pen stop so that's nice (also useful for unscrewing the cap if you have some hand issues, like I do). They're very much my go-to cheap fountain pens.
