    I like that there’s more to this than another “spider-man is married” story. It’s more of a subversion of the original Ultimate Spider-man. Instead of him being a young spider-man he gets his powers way later in life.
    I am honestly more excited to see an uncle Ben be a supporting character in Spider-man and how Hick Ms reimagines Peter’s rogues gallery
    One thing that has me worried is that it seems to be part of a larger story instead of being more self contained like the original run.

      Same, I like what I'm seeing so far, but the fact it's so inherently connected to some larger cosmic plot doesn't vibe with me. Although, maybe this Spider-man will take up a more central role in shaping "Avengers" of this world, maybe even lead them alongside Captain America? That would be interesting.

    Even as a teenager reading Spidey, I always liked the more grown-up version where he had college student and then adult life problems. So it's cool of them to give it another shot, and not make him miserable. I also really like Miles Morales but that's more like a tangent compared to this new Ultimate Spider-Man.

    I feel like in this universe, the lesson peter needs to learn isn't that great power comes with great responsibility but rather, great responsibilities require greater power to meet and exceed. I'm expecting a story about peter learning to struggle with using the powers he needs to meet his own expectations or the struggles that are involved in the gaining the power to meet his great responsibilites.

    As a cynical old veteran fan, my advice is, "Enjoy it while it lasts". Even if Hickman is 100% sincere about writing a mature, settled, family man Spidey, Marvel editorial will never let it stand. Sooner or later (probably sooner), something awful will happen to this Peter Parker and his family, just to "prove" that the mainstream, perpetually young and unmarried Peter is the "correct" version.

    The great things about this comic are Peter being married to MJ with kids, Uncle being alive and becoming editor of the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson giving Peter his tie and viewing him like a son, and Tony giving Peter a radioactive spider so that Peter would become Spider-Man since it’s his missing piece. Honestly, this is one of the best Spider-Man comics to come out in a long time. A lot of the stories coming from the main universe have been god awful in recent runs, especially the really bad Peter/MJ stuff and the introduction of Paul, so this is really refreshing to see. It's so nice to see Peter just be happy for once and have his life together, rather than just being a constant punching bag that is perpetually suffering and not being allowed to grow or change. I haven't really liked the majority of new Spider-Man comics, but between the new Ultimate Spider-Man series and The Spectacular Spider-Men team-up series on Earth-616, I'm getting excited for more Spider-Man comics again and am actually really interested in seeing more. You are *far* from the only person who thinks that Reed Richards is one bad decision away from being an honest-to-goodness villain. Not even one bad day, he just may someday come up with the wrong idea, follow it to its completion, and become as much a threat as Doom...

    • @runbaa9285
      @runbaa9285 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      That's honestly kind of the point of The Maker. It has been said by tons of characters that the only thing keeping Reed grounded is his family. The Maker comes from the original Ultimate Universe, a universe where the F4 disbanded. Without his family, nothing held him back.

    • @pmgerard
      @pmgerard 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I mean, I'm a fan of Reed and personally I just treat Stan Lee written comics as having an unreliable narrator, because otherwise every man is essentially just as misogynistic as 60s Reed.
      Yeah, Reed is one bad decision away from becoming a villain -- and I think Doom is perhaps prescient in sensing that.
      But he's equally close to becoming not exactly a villain but a tragedy nonetheless. The classic WHAT IF THE INVISIBLE GIRL HAD DIED...? issue did this to great effect, had a funeral that was among the best sequences I've ever read in a comic, and resurrected a classic Jack Kirby trope: Reed plus stubble equals scary.
      Any time a Reed Richards works on a problem long enough to get five o'clock shadow, things are about to get intense.

  • @SphinxMagoo

    My head canon is that The Maker is really a mind-switched Victor Von Damme inside Reed Richards’ body. A Superior Mr. Fantastic, so to speak. The mindswap trope with Doom and Reed was set up in the FF’s Lee/Kirby run. So much so that I wonder if the option to make it a permanent aspect of the Ultimate FF was introduced as a way to further make the Ultimate Universe separate from the 616 Universe. The storyline that convinced me that maybe Ultimate Reed wasn’t Ultimate Reed was in one of the crossovers where Reed turns against the FF and has servant minions that look awfully demonic to me. 616 Doom had recently gone crazier with his magic use during Mark Waid’s run on the FF, so maybe I was reading into events a bit more than may have been intended. But I still think of The Maker as Superior Ultimate Reed Richards.

      @foldabotZ 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I said the same on someone's Twitter post on this new Ultimate Spider-Man. It's almost exactly what Dr. Manhattan did to create the New 52 universe by removing the JSA's existence, which led to a domino effect: Clark never becomes Superboy to save his parents from a car accident, which in turn prevents the formation of the Legion of Superheroes in the 31st Century. The general public never has a prior experience with Superheroes before Superman in the modern day, so people are more afraid of them.

    I think it’s interesting getting to see a Peter Parker becoming spider-man. Who already has the understanding of with great power comes great responsibility. Is not just about the power for him, it’s about doing something great and helping others. He isn’t stumbling in to these powers and this life, he’s choosing to have it. I feel like the biggest selling point of this Spider-Man, is that he’s actually happy. I just hope no one try’s to take that away from him, 616 has been continuously ruined since the end of the beyond arc.

  • @TheJohno95
    @TheJohno95 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    My problem is that they're doing exactly what they did with the original Ultimate universe. They make a universe with variants of the same characters that new readers won't have to read to get into it. But...We all know how these end up. Eventually the company stops pushing it and the writers go over the top and it ends in flames. I know everyone is "le gasp" because HIckman is working on it. But we saw how X-Men ended up. Bendis started as a cosmic savior and we see where he is now. Or actually we don't. "If you live long enough, you become the villain." I like Hickman's writing. But I am REALLY tired of his damned data walls that eat up half of a book.

    • @galactic85
      @galactic85 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      1. There are no data pages in ultimate spider-man #1. So far hickman is taking a more grounded/slice of life approach here which is refreshing. The data pages were reserved for the ultimate invasion miniseries and there they were arguably useful and important for helping to set up what exactly the new universe was because the miniseries was only 4 issues long.
      2. Yes the original Ultimate universe flared out and crashed and burned because the writers went over the top but that doesn't mean this one will. There isn't a focus on being "edgy" with this universe and mark Millar and jeph Loeb aren't involved in any way. If you want evidence that an alternate universe line can work just look at the MC2 comics. Spider-girl lasted for over 100 issues and had some spin offs. The line didn't last forever and obviously Spider-girl was the most successful title, but the MC2 as a whole had a pretty good run with some fun and entertaining stories. Did it last forever? No but I don't expect this series to last forever any more than I expect my favorite TV shows to last forever.
      Hickman is smart enough not to do another event like ultimatum. We are only a few issues in this new universe. Let's see what ideas the writers have before we start working about all the ways it could go wrong.

Spiderman is the kind of hero who is at his peak with a loving family and community helping to remind him what exactly he is fighting for. Constantly putting him through the wringer with nothing good coming and staying makes him less relatable and seem like he's overcoming great odds to being a pitiful basket case partaking in a futile task

Regardless of if you believe in destiny or anything like that, the choice to become spider-man, the choice to do more, regardless of the potential sacrifice I think does echo Peters character well. Something that Sal from Comicpop pointed out is that Peter is basically a stand in for this comic's main audience: the disillusioned, tired millennial, going back and reading it, it feels like a very cathartic issue. It's Peter choosing to be Spider-Man, choosing something that could be a HUGE risk to himself, his wife, his kids, his co-workers, but he chooses it none the less; because he was given the choice, it wasn't thrust upon him like everything else seems to be in his life.

    It's interesting that this Ultimate Universe kind of starts with baggage, but kind of doesn't. I don't think the goal is necessarily to attract new readers so much as it is to bring back old ones. But it does still allow for new beginnings, because the heroes are still coming into their powers. It is their start. Anyhow, I thought this issue was great and yeah, Pete and MJ belong together. If main universe won't ever restore that, I hope this one keeps it. There can be growth even with some things staying consistent.

    10:30 I think this works fairly well here because The Maker didn't allow that to happen the same.

  • @PosthumanHeresy
    @PosthumanHeresy 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    12:30 I don't see anyone discussing _which_ costume Tony gave him. Bio-organic. Black. Liquid. The Maker had to prevent two different beings here, and he stored them together. This is Peter + The Symbiote. This is a world where Peter Parker is a mature adult who can take care of the Symbiote and guide him like the child he is.

    This comic has done what many a good first issue has done - reel in the readers. But - and I need to emphasize this - DO NOT expect everything to play out in a smooth manner. Fans really want a book about a married Peter being Spiderman, which this book provides, but this is a different Peter, who has faced different circumstances in his life, married to a different MJ. What I'm saying is - keep an open mind to everything about to happen.

    I love this story it gave me everything i ever wanted and plus finally giving us the one true peter parker who's actually a adult and shocker and seeing Peter parker and Mary jane being married and they have there daughter mayday parker the future spider-girl and her brother Richard parker all being family is really awesome and badass in my opinion. Also another thing I loved about this story is seeing Peter parker becoming Spider-Man because he was inspired by his wife Mary jane and uncle ben which is actually something unique and very cool in my opinion, and I am also curious if we are going to see mayday parker his daughter reaction to her father being a superhero which is going to be adorable in my opinion.

    What I immediately thought about this issue was that it hits at the heartstrings of someone older, and I'd like to think that it's an awareness of the readerbase for this. People who grew up following the original Ultimates run will be older by now, and I think the story that's being told here hits pretty good for folks in their mid 20's-40's who might feel that their life is starting to stagnate.

    I’m not telling others what to think.
    I’m just saying purely my own reaction to the discarding of the original history of the MU.
    To me, that continuity was the great strength of the MU.
    The MU (like DCU) is fiction.
    You have to buy into it .
    How can you buy into something that denies its own existence?
    It is like acting as if history is some hassle that must be overcome instead of built on.
    I don’t know if I can communicate well what I mean.
    But I personally lament all this multiverse stuff.
    To me it is silly.
    I can’t take it seriously.
    Sorry. 🤷‍♂️
    I want a spider-man (or Batman) that IS the same character (albeit they may have changed just as real people change over time)
    as the spider-man in Amazing Fantasy whatever issue it is.
    The world he lives in changes just as our world changes.
    But I’m not interested in nonsense (in my humble opinion) like Gwen Stacy is spider-man , or alive for that matter.
    I know it is “just a comic book”.
    But you don’t have to continually throw that in my face .
    Hercule Poirot isn’t a real person.
    But he doesn’t suddenly get bitten by a radioactive mustache in one of Christie’s novels.
    Why not?
    Because that would be stupid.

    I wonder if this will bring the wrath of Mephisto down upon Ironlad? I ask because surely Tony would realize that, at minimum, May is supposed to also inherit Peter's powers and, at maximum, both Richard and May are supposed to inherit them. Mephisto would likely notice that Spidergirl is being created and immediately do whatever he can to preserve himself by joining forces with The Maker and attacking Ironlad.

    I am worried about the loss of Peter's iconic tragic origin, especially the "lesson" of indirectly dooming someone close to him by deliberately choosing not to use his great power. I am intrigued to see what if anything this version does with that. It's not just about the powers, Tony!

    On the note of Marvel editorial's "Adult Spider-Man/Peter Parker is relatable" I may note that I was in middle school when I first watch Into The Spider-Verse and played Spider-Man PS4 and I (and my roommate) loved Peter Parker in both of those and now I'm a college student and I loved this issue, almost as if it's painfully obvious to everyone (including Marvel editorial) that saying that Spider-Man/Peter Parker isn't relatable when he's an adult is just a bad excuse for them to continue down their series of garbage mandates and hiring crappy writers like Zeb Wells... oh wait is obviously is that.
