I like how Rick uses “soul care” vs. self care. His words are enhanced by his demeanor, which is so calming. It makes me feel cared for! Thanks Rick and John for today’s lesson. It has changed my view of what it means to care for myself before God.

I think that’s partly right. Self care isn’t only self-denial/discipline. As others have said, it is that which is “life-enhancing” and aligns with God’s will for us because He loves us.

I am thinking about John’s quote, “Self denial, rightly understood, is self care.” I usually feel way better about myself when I practice any act of self denial. The more I starve unhealthy appetites the stronger I become. “Soul care is better than self care.” Thank you, men!

I taught Romeo and Juliet to 9th graders for 38 years and always tried to convey to them that acting quickly on strong emotions like infatuation can end with some dire results. I wish I had heard and then "borrowed" the phrase, "Own, but not enthrone your emotions" for its concise and complete meaning. Thanks for the soul care today John and Rick.

I can’t get enough of this message. As always it’s so full of Godly wisdom!!! You ran out of time before speaking about how to strengthen and fill our reservoir? I am thinking that taking time to do things that bring you joy is one of the things that can refill?

John, I have enjoyed these thought provoking talks tremendously. I began tuning in during The Screwtape Letters. After one hearing I was hooked. Have you considered puting each series on a CD or flash drive? Or even put together and publish as devotionals. These would be great discussion prompters for small groups/home group etc. Just a thought.

Yes, self-care is resting, but it also means getting enough sleep, taking breaks from social media, eating healthy food, refraining from alcohol (for alcoholics), connecting with others instead of isolating, and exercise. A lot of it looks like work, but I suffer when I don’t do those things. ❤

Wow! We’ll explained that I’m able to understand how spiritual disciplines play a vital role in filling up the “reservoir”, and putting it to practice is the key, where I also struggle in…the pouring out, but not taking time to refill my reservoir…things to ponder for sure, thank you for such a great reminder to be intentional on constantly renewing our minds

So, did I or did I not see some goosing happening at about the time of the story of the goose laying the golden egg? Clearly, I did not exercise appropriate self-denial before posting this.

Self denial is not doing what I feel like doing for the sake of a greater cause. Ohhhh. Wow.
