John brought tears to my eyes this morning. My daughter has brain cancer and I have felt like I was coming unglued. She is 44 with 5 wonderful children and a dear husband. They are all devout Christians. Praise Gid. It is so important to remember His eyes are on the sparrow.
Wow, John. The end of this made me think of the countless times I’d come up and play under the end of one of your messages as you wrapped it up so emotionally and beautifully and brought it home to each of us. I’m imagining you inviting us to bow our heads to reflect as you did here, then Lynn S then beginning to sing, “Why should I be discouraged…” Thank you for the countless, deep moments with God like this we all experienced because of your teaching and leadership. God used you again and again to not just create spiritual experiences but to lead me to moments of genuine transformation. Thank you. Love to you and Nancy.
“His Eye is on the Sparrow” was written by Civilla Durfee Martin in 1905. It has been recorded countless times, but my favorite version is a beautiful duet of it that is on the Sister Act 2 sound track.
Dr. Paul Brand and Phillip Yancey wrote a book entitled, "In the Likeness of God." While listening to this devotion of many parts making up a whole, it caused me to think of this book. Phillip Yancy makes the observation of the body on a cellular level is comparatible to the body of Christ. That so many critical vital minut parts make up the body. Parts that the body couldn't exist without. Thanks John. Who knew you could make such vital points in such a low tech way.....
I love these. However, I am starting 3months late. Is there anyway that you could add the supporting scripture to the description so that people listening later can also get the email information from previous videos when watching the videos after the day of posting?
as having grown up in the Central Valley, i am aware of the Donner party and their interesting adventure and i did giggle at your joke even though, you're right, its bad :)

In the 2002 edition, Chapter 2 on page 31, under the section "The Human Self is Not Mysterious" beginning with the last sentence of the first paragraph of that section. Hope all is well with you Steve!
The problem I see w/ us as a Christian is we bought this false narrative that our life should be at ease all the time because we are followers of Jesus Christ. We have forgotten that we live in this broken world tainted w/ sin. Solomon said that life is a grind and it is. The affluence in the west make us forget that. We expect that we are supposed to be spared from pain and agony because Jesus Christ is going to save us. The bible never teaches that narrative. Jesus let his diciple get hungry and pluck grains when He was w/ them. He could have produced bread/food for them but He did not. He is more interested in our character (to be like Him) than in our comfort. Paul said he learned to be content in every situations he is into. Problems, pains, trials come our way , sometimes of our own making sometimes not. Rain falls on the just and the unjust but we have hope unlike others that our afflictions are momentarily. It will not last forever. As Peter said we have a living hope in Jesus Christ. We are going to have a happily ever after in the end as Phil Visher said. Once we learned how to completely relinquish our will/right to rule over our lives to God, who actually knows how to dive it, we will start to have a different prospective in looking at our tribulations.
Thanks Joe and all. What a gift…
