Insurance needed for Hotshot trucking;

  • #commercialInsurance is the Hardest and most expensive part of Hotshot trucking and car hauling. #autotransport is more expensive then freight haulers insurance. Do you need 750k or 1 million Liability insurance. We go over everything needed and why it is so high. Their is reasons why it is so high. New entrants really struggle with the insurance being sky high.

Great info Dave, love your channel 👍🏻 and your personality hahah you crack me up with your little dance but keep the great information coming. A lot of people would charge just to give information but any trucker that helps out another trucker is always grateful. I’m currently pulling a dry van but little by little I’m trying to get my own 6-7CC. I hope I run in to you one day would really like to buy you lunch and see if you answer a few questions🤙🏻

Sup HotShot... long time fan brother.
I've been dragging a wedge for a little over 2 yrs now.
I've helped several greenhorn haulers and every single one was told the same thing.
    1. If you don't have $10k of side money don't even try to start a hotshot business.
    2. GET A CDL CLASS A !! for two reasons.
    a. It will give you training on how to pull, backup and park a 50+ ft trailer.
    b. It will reduce your insurance cost ESPECIALLY for the first year.
    3. Buy a dually WITH a bed (NO CAB & CHASSIS) because it can be registered under 8k lbs which make it a private vehicle NOT a commercial vehicle. Doing that takes you out of all the DOT/FMCSA bullshit like roadside inspections, weight stations (till have to pass through but never get that green right arrow), no annual safety audit.
    4. Run within the 150 mile rule. No ELD or logs required.

Semi 65K 1axle pulling a wedge runs about 12K a year, man I thought that was high til I saw some comments, and what you're sayin. Holy crapola! 20 30g's a year dam. But-did ya see the guys with the 1tons pulling a 5 car that might be why, no way that can be all too safe. Might as well get the A License no matter what you're going pull on down the road. Big truck has higher capacity axles/tires and is more stable also. For the same price upfront it will last 3-4 times longer, or more. Not new of course but, 50G's buys a lower mile decent rig.
Be safe out there lock em down, turn, and burn em. Keep em comin Hotshot Dave info might save a whole lotta greif for the other drivers.

DC Jones Hotshots LLC - Leased on to a company
I run a Ford F-350 dually. Car hauler with a PJ 35+5 dovetail gooseneck. I removed the monster ramps added 4ft slide-out Extensions off the back of dovetail, added top deck over gooseneck with 4ft flip over incline Extension off front. I haul 4 cars fully extended or 1 car 2 trucks on a Daily. This still lets me run small equipment when need if I’m in a bad area and car are not available.
Thx for great videos keep them up

      35ft deck
5ft dovetail with 4ft pull out extensions (only pull them out 3ft max)

I have a very urgent question for you since you know what you're talking about. Now you said general liability should be $1 million for car haulers. Does bodily injury/property damage liability matter? Or should that be $1 million too?

Whats up hotshot loving the content man! I'm trying to get into the industry and my game plan was to get an f-250 and a 20ft trailer and see what hauls I can get done Friday-Sunday. From your experience can I find enough work using a single car hauler to cover my insurance expenses on a month to month basis and generate some profit? All of my quotes show itll be around 1k a month. I would love to run m-f but i have to maintain life and normal bills with my day job atm

Very interesting you will find that when you first start operating. That very few companies will even quote hotshot operators. I am with Progressive now at 4 years of operating with no losses. I get a lot of unsolicited contact from Insurers. I was told that when I started that fuel would be my biggest expense. But since I haul specialized freight and I only haul a few loads a year that insurance is my biggest expense. I would rather keep my pickup parked rather than haul cheap freight. I look at the loss risk of every load I haul. Okay for those of you they say how can you make it. I work a full time job and I am a relief driver for a company hauling mail. I have one direct customer that I haul for. When they need me I schedule them into my work. Most of the time I charge by the hour I provide hauling and rigging service. Another good video from Hotshot Dave

In regards to the commercial auto insurance, i just bought a 2016 ram 5500 chassis and got a commercial insurance quote through progressive for $750,000/100,000. Quote annotates that its commercial insurance, but the premium seems to low to be real. Quote shows its for commercial for hotshot hauling, everything looks right but the annual premium is only $6,336 with only $1,036 down. Just doesn’t seem right....

It all depends on what equipment and cost you start out with but to be safe I would say 20k to 30k. because with today's rates even running hard it's going to take awhile to get your feet off the ground.
