Going to have to watch this in multiple sittings, but at the 1 hour mark I gotta say - as someone who has not read any of these books and doesn't really have an interest in reading them (specifically because of stuff people have said in reviews I have seen), this video has already been a wild ride. I really appreciate your in-depth thoughts and analysis!! Excited to see where this one goes.
worldbuilding. the answer is worldbuilding. we know nothing about the world, and the characters therefore interact very poorly with it/their environment, and their motivations are therefore poorly realised, etc. we don't even know what the society actually does, and how these initiates gain "power." if the world was built better, this would have been a brilliant story!
if the audio quality keeps shifting, it’s bc my mic was filtering out sirens and other various street noises! i unfortunately live on a very busy street in a big city. ty for watching!! 💗
QUEEN I’m proud of you for overcoming the curse and publishing this video in defiance of the witchy powers that be. don’t mind me live-reacting like this is a sports game
can you imagine how cool it could’ve been to see them all weakening/ailing in different ways in book two, all suspecting why but in denial, only to be confronted with the fact in book three that it’s because of the lack of sacrifice? (and magical sickness is a really cool concept to play with-I’m thinking specifically of “nightwash” in stiefvater’s newest books, but I’m sure there’s lot of other unique, creative examples). it’s odd that the narrative tension was undercut so massively by the handling of the sacrifice element.
also, yes, it’s hard to believe that these characters are the ~six smartest of their generation~ when they don’t see the sacrifice coming in the first place, but then they also don’t question it once it’s introduced ?? would’ve been so cool to see them research the history & magic behind it

agreed! its a shame bc the set up is there for such a good story, its just not totally grounded or fully realized. ty for watching
