BDO no longer monetize new characters since like when the tag system release, like 4 years ago? Nobody buy exchange coupon anymore cuz just tag. You don't need weight because maids are given out for free like candies. You don't need to buy inven slot because quests and events give them out like candies as well. And you don't even have to buy costume because costume boxes are given out for free multiple times every major events.

Biggest difference is BDO exist for 8 years and AOC is 8 years away from release.
I don't think any MMO player is actually afraid that they will enjoy another MMO, this is just a myth parroted by content creators to feed their audiences a sense of superiority for "picking the right game" even if that game quite literally doesn't exist.
In fact, there wouldn't be so much interest in new MMOs if everyone thought there was no chance they would play them. They want more games, and they want better games, and they want to play them! They just want Ashes to fail because they're tired of being told it's the new MMO killer. Everyone got tried of hearing about the next generation of "WoW Killers" in the 2000s/2010s. Even WoW couldn't kill itself despite its best try. No matter how good Ashes is it's not going to kill other games, it'll simply be "another good game" to play.
The only people calling AoC a WoW killer are just idiotic WoW haters. Intrepid Stuidos and Steven have no intention of AoC being a "WoW killer"; they just want an MMORPG that they can enjoy, and like to see on the market. Steven has said plenty of times, that he's just tired of the MMOs on the market, and wanted to make his own for himself and the players who grew up on the Old School MMOs.

A good visual indicator for a bleeding proc would be if the blood splattered onto the ground/grass wherever the bleeding character stood. I agree 100% that being able to tell what's going on just by the game's visuals is a lot better than relying entirely on UI elements like debuffs and shit to let you know that a player is bleeding.
I would love to see the concept turned on it's head too; like a bleed build being tougher to play underwater because the bleed proc creates a cloud of blood that lingers in the water and makes it hard to see through for a short amount of time.

The reason why ppl always compare combat to BDO is for the simple reason that BDO just feels good doing combat in, doesn't really have anything to do with the game in itself but you have to give them that when you do spells/attacks in BDO it feels good and looks cool. They do the comparison because they want combat to feel good just like it does in BDO, doesn't have to be action combat just the feel of animations, sound, visuals and keybinds.
Totally agree, BDO is the first mmo that made me enjoy grinding because of this. Every skill and class has that "oomf". I don't want another mmo that i feel my hits and skills have zero impact and they are just like paper made puppets with numbers rolling over the head. Really hope they do something brilliant with AoC, all other aspects seem dreamy. Even if I dislike tab targeting, could get behind of they do it better.
Just imagen 100 vs 100 with those skills. PCs would start burning and nobody would see anything. BDO combat is only for single player games.

that doesn't change the fact that the combat itself on bdo has better animations, is faster paced and feels more free, so therefore a better action combat
now u can say the combat system itself isnt the best because of the class locking and what not, that's why the tag system was introduced into the game, but the actual action combat is miles ahead what any mmorpg has to offer lets be real
the only big criticism u can give is the lack of skill diversity for each class ye, that one's fair

I was given bdo for free from Amazon prime and I refuse to play it because of the dumb gender locking. Not only that but the immense gender imbalance is embarassing.

I play wow, the game is almost 20 years old, few have survived this long. Will Ashes survive a year? Ashes involves a lot of time commitment, you depend on other players to create the content. Most people don't like games like this, today.
Be careful not to be disappointed later.
It's kind of unfair to say that BDO is a solo mmo when you don't engage in the majority of the content. Almost all forms of PvP are group content; AoS is 3v3 with equalized gear, Guild League is 10v10, Node War and Siege can range from like 30v30 to 100v100, War of the Roses is 300v300 PvPvE.
For the purely PvE side you also have a good amount of relevant group content. The dungeons have really good rewards, most guilds do Guild Bosses every week, you have group grind spots like Olun's Valley, Altar Imps and Tunkuta Turo's to name a few.
Furthermore, part 2 of the Land of the Morning Light expansion is in development and has confirmed guild/group content. Just because you play/played BDO solo doesn't mean that it is in fact a solo mmo. Even if I'm grinding a solo grind spot I'll be on discord talking with my guildies.
On a sidenote, yes the classes are somewhat monetized. But with the tagging of classes and all the free exchange coupons that Pearl Abyss give out, you rarely if ever have to spend money to try out other classes. The only time you would spend money is if you hard reroll to every new class and old classes inbetween new releases which pretty much no one does.

Yeah you can't compare them since AoC is not a game yet and will be a very lackluster when it releases. Build diversity apart from ARPGS and CRPGS is a myth.

BDO is an open world MMORPG tho?? where are you getting your facts from? Also, BDO has been out for YEARS and even early classes have better animation styles than most other MMORPGs. Idk what you mean by monetizing classes? You get a few character slots for free (all classes are free), and if you wanna make MULTIPLE characters then it costs money, but the game is absolutely free if you want it to be.

BDO is still the best MMO for me as well. But AoC has cool enough combat and deeper life skills and more actual group activities that I think I’ll finally be able to move on to something better. As long as the combat feels actiony enough, that’s fine with me. I just can’t do stand in one place and play the piano type games anymore.

I feel fairly reluctant to write the comment I have "in me" and I am also lazy to elaborate on the "content" near it`s end... yet ~here I go:
I am gonna go ahead and not argue with anything of what you've said. In the general sense of things... it is true. However... there is more and I am now gonna explain the rest of that story. With exact percent that I am totally making up (and time frame). So within 5 months of release... 60% of the player base will play exactly one and the same copy - paste 10 cookie cutter builds. Let me remind you the "cookie cutter" term... That would be one race choice and only that race... with one class mixed with exactly that other class, with exactly this, that and the other skills selected/augmented/leveled, combined with . 10 of those will be the choice of 60% of the players with exactly 0 variation, practically disregarding the entirety of it. All the videos will be made by those players. All the guides, play troughs and reviews will be done on those exact 10 "options". The reminding 40% that actually decided to go ahead and do "something of their own" will be shunned, disliked and excluded from the content. The reality within those will be 30% will actually be slower and miss performing because on not Cookie Cutter builds... 10% will have achieved their own fringe "god modes" and they will be immediately be branded "no lifers". No amount of patch notes and ~balancing will ever change that. Amongst all of those diversity the entire player base at all times will be or will be striving to at least match 10 cookie cutter builds. Meanwhile BDO will have by than around 30 still "unique" classes (just as a side note). Also yes... I do have a lot of time put into BDO... I work... I do not feel like starting another "main game" and never had time for a side game. Yes I do like to try and be within the world of Ashes of Creation when it comes out... trust me... However to pay a >full month< worth of monthly subscription for a month in which I have 10 days off and out of those 10 I probably need 5 for non PC time... Does not seem viable to me. Those are just personal stuffs... If I were very, very wealthy person I'd probably give ~definitely give... 2 ~ 3 months of Ashes of Creation and by than the "best game" would have won "within me". I would have either wanna continue to play one of them or return to the other... Weather I would have accidentally ended up on a cookie cutter, while doing my own thing... which I definitely would... Like If I am correct What I want is called Cultist. I kind of wanna start Rogue for solo leveling (even thou I am sure it will be horrible on fragile class with low items) and than for a first time ever experience ~Rogue that can potentially heal himself or even others... I do think that would be awesome to experience within that realm... However it feels to me as something that would take me chained days within months.. and months... and months... which as a poor and working person I simply cannot do... so Bam ~ Wam thank you ma'am BDO it is... not that it does not require tons of times... But I already do have a few of those in it. As for a fresh start... the described condition for AOC still stands for everyone... within BDO as a non purely time based game (as are all Mandatory Monthly Subscription game that are not garbage) you don`t feel as limited by everyone that is not it`s gameplay and you still are getting to play a good game. I think that it`s one of it`s major strong sides/charms. Not that I am by any means commencing it at all. I am just, like in the video using to to convey an opinion about mmorpg game state as a whole and trough my view point.
You have no idea what the gameplay in Ashes of Creation is actually like since the alpha 2 is still ways off. Yet you are saying that people playing different mmos are afraid that Ashes of Creation will make the time that they spent in other mmos feel like a major waste of time. Maybe it would be wise to actually see people playing the alpha 2 and giving their opinions about the game before starting to hype the mechanics of a game that is only mainly available for the devs themselves at the current moment. There is a difference between promises of what the mmo will be and the actual moment to moment gameplay of the actual game realized based on those promises. Ashes of Creation is still in that limbo of development.
He isn't saying Ashes will be a better game, he's pointing out a psychological issue where we gamers tend to think our game is the best experience out there, to justify the time commitment.

@@sliceofheaven3026 The funny part is most of the people who play those games will hate Ashes, so it's really not going to be a problem for them. Unless the game undergoes a massive 180 it's not going to capture the WoW crowd and they've never said anything to make anyone think that's the goal.
No, Narc is saying people hate on Ashes because the POTENTIAL of what it could become. It's a fear that a new game on the horizon is generating hype that could overshadow their current game, and they want to downplay that hype. Doesn't matter if it exists yet, the hate is happening today. Ashes clearly has a huge amount of intelligent game design and effort behind it, and whether or not it becomes a good game, their showcases are enough to bring out that fear.
The animations point starting at 2:12 doesn't make any sense my man, the animations are specific to classes and not to races, sure WoW has like 1 or 2 race specific animations, for example rogue undead has 1 unique animation, but that is an exception not the rule. So even if you have 10 races and 10 classes, in total 100 combinations, you only need 10 sets of animations for 10 classes technically... Plus, every MMO does that, every mmo has specific animations for every class and those animations are unique to that class. The only difference is that you are gender locked on classes in BDO, which sucks to be fair. Am I missing something here?

I think the big difference between ANY previous MMO and AoC is that other MMOs were focused on PvE and individual progression, even if they had a lot of PvP. You might have a guild that you formed a team with, but that was secondary.
Now, individual progression is less important than node progression. Up to max level, your progression in level and gear will be more or less the same, except that you have to progress your node before you can level up yourself, but I suspect that you will hit maxlevel/Endgame at about Node level 4.
Endgame progression will depend on reaching nodes 5 and 6. And probably having nodes of other biomes as allies (maybe), or vassals. When/if you drop node level, you may say lose the ability to repair your gear, that you obtained at that level, until you get it, or another node back to level 6.
What this means is that you have a nearly endless endgame. Maintaining a single level 6 node against a level 5 next door, before everyone is geared to level 6, at more than one biome is going to be tricky. So you will be always fighting to keep your node level up, AND acquiring new biome "colonies", to get more best in slot gear, to make it easier to keep your node at level 6.
If you reward people with (multiple) node progression instead of only personal gear. It becomes more of a team game than an individual game.
This is the way I would do it anyway, and I am sure I am not as smart nor have thought about it as long as the developers. It would keep the whole game on rails, and avoid it turning into a gank-fest. In any case, it seems likely that they will have some sort of mechanic like this.

Because asmon did it first and he was simply responding to asthma's take to demonstrate that they are not similar in any way as BDO really isn't an MMORPG... you can say you can compare any two things but there's a reason that the term apples to oranges exists my guy especially in this case where it's not even apples to oranges, it's apples to orange seeds because ashes isn't even in its Alpha 2 yet with once it gets to its beta, then you can start to compare with other things in a general sense but until then, there's really no point in trying to make this sort of comparison

@@chasebliss5045 well i disagree since the original concept for mmorpgs is based on D&D and subsequnetly, part of that is that your supposed to be adventuring with fellow adventurers in a world that relies on all of your combine skills to make it through whatever it throws at you. full stop, any game that is a single player game in reality like bdo or eso or FF14 already looses the mmo part and arguably bdo especially doesnt even have the rpg side of that because YOU dont get to choose your role more than a superficial almost just hero select screen.

Just because a genre originated somewhere, doesn't mean that every game in the genre has to be an identical copy of that for it to qualify as such game. There's certain criteria ofcourse but BDO hits all of those.

Wish I backed the AoC back in 2017 but it looked like it was going to be a tab-target game at the time so I wasn't interested. My friend brought it up to me the other day but I noticed pre-orders are long over as well. Guess I have to wait for Beta 1 to try it.
The only thing that's disappointing for me, I wish they put Lifetime Subs as a basic option but I don't think that will happen.

I've been moving from MMO to MMO (and ARPG) for a few years now. Sticking more than 1-2 months to a game is just meaningless to me.
Once I've done the content, I move to the next game which releases its new content.
And even doing that, taking breaks from online here and there, I stil end up with several years of other games backlog.
Don't get me wrong. I stayed years on EQ, WOW, etc. But the truth is... there weren't many options back then. Now we have choices.

I think AoC is doing the class/combat system the way it needs to be done for the way in which they have designed their game. Simple as that.
But I wouldn't die on the hill of the animations as they are in ashes at the current moment. They're not good yet. I'm not mad because they've improved, but don't pretend they're good because they need major improvement still... improvement I am hoping and expecting them to implement over the next couple of years of development.

I just wish modern MMO's would try to have modern combat, at least be a little innovative . Most of the fans are 30+ so they're fine with it, it's what they're used to. Combat right now is WoW combat in unreal 5 with a sprinkling of action combat elements...

Narc you are still young, I'm 58, I wrote a paper in uni describing MMOs in the 80's.
It was based on BBS 's combined with streetfighter 2.
My first experience with a real MMO was Anarchy Online, then Warcraft.

BDO is an mmo, but not really a mmo rpg. I think that is important distinction when comparing it to Ashes.
I would agree but I would clarify that games like video and even games like Final Fantasy 14 and ESO for example don't even on the title of MMO but instead can only really be called online open world RPGs because they are online and connected to other players in the same world and it is an open world and a single player RPG... the term MMO stands for massively multiplayer online which implies that there's some level of interaction between the players but those games can't even come close to reaching that title
And beyond that that's not to say that I dislike any of those games in particular even though I haven't played Final Fantasy, as the experiences they give are fun if you want to enjoy that specifically especially in ESO where they're even branching off into now adding it and spell scribing finally however I still stand by that I haven't even the title of just a MMO

visually some skills are pretty bad in AOc compared with the beautiful enivroment but combat seems good and balanced, not too OP like BDO. also in bdo all classes feels kinda the same bcs dashes and complex spells but assasin class felt nice and unique bcs of double jump

BDO had some systems I liked. Narc is totally correct about the bdo classes.
I mean @6:10 while i agree, many of those players play multiple versions at the same time. And at the same time i believe no other Mmo has over 2m active players. So even if its just 1 million per version of the game its still a massively popular game with more than enough playerbase to do any content.

People won't abandon WoW for Ashes - not right away (and assuming Ashes is good on launch). See, so many mounts they spent so many hours farming ICC on 5000 different characters. That's time they will have to forfeit.
you're right and many people have already bought into Ashes of Creation creating their own sunk cost fallacies for a game that doesn't exist. The only difference between the two groups is that one group supports a game that used to be good and the other supports a game that might be good, hard to say which is more logical here, the first is pessimistic and the latter optimistic, pick your poison I guess.
