I said elsewhere that Bethesda devs are the problem, not the engine. If it was the engine, why can modders make miracles while the paid and vested devs turn out dog water? Having Bethesda switch to ue5 or whatever is simply like downloading the unofficial patch for any Bethesda game and calling it a day. It won't fix the mid gameplay, mid writing, mid art direction, mid concepting, and bloated prices. Why? Because shit devs will make shit regardless if you give them a bespoke engine or a NASA grade super program. Source? Modern high quality mods for previous titles. Just look at ttw, the cod weapon and anim packs, overhauls, fallout London for Bunguses sake... The engine is fully capable of being bug free, fun gameplay, and good systems. You ain't gonna see any of it in a Bethesda office... And this is coming from someone with thousands and thousands of hours on these titles. Bethesda as we want it is long gone, my gooners, long gone. 🤓

    • @LOLstickvid

The engine is part of the problem. Obviously it has technical limitations, but there's another problem. Let's say you're a top tier game dev looking for a new job. Company A is working with unreal pushing it to it's limits: that's a transferable skill you can take to your next job. Then Company B is using Creation Engine - it's effectively a dead end in the job market. No one is going to hire you for that job experience if they've a choice of candidates that do have relevant experience. Bethesda's engine and their tumbling reputation is *why* they don't get the best devs. All they have to offer is nostalgia, and that doesn't pay the rent.

Bethesda really needs to hire some actual writers. Many people were under impression that bethesda actually understood the criticism of starfield regarding space and planets exploration, untapped lore, unsatisfying ending, quantity and quality of quests. Its not like they expected the game to be magically fixed from top to bottom, but rather hoped that expansion will bring large enough territory with good exploration and questing while giving answers atleast some important questions about the lore. Also polishing existing mechanics, bringing some new ones and adding a noticable amount of new gear (weapons, armor, modules, ships etc) were pretty reasonable expectations too. But meh, its bethesda after all

This expansion is really weird when you think about it. Bethesda marketed it as something different, big, unique, and people speculated that it would save starfield. Yet it's clear they didn't throw everyone at it to make it epic. The "handcrafted planet" is just the main city area, that from the footage looks plain and empty in a lot of areas. Even the city itself has barely anyone there.
Basically what Bethesda did was look at all the feedback they got for the game and went "You know what? They're wrong." and they just did the same thing again. I don't understand it. Is there a culture of toxic positivity at Bethesda? This seems to be the case with them getting employees to reply to negative reviews telling them they don't understand the game. It's bizarre.

    • @LiF-y3c
      @LiF-y3c วันที่ผ่านมา +4

I'll be honest, the biggest issue with exploring the handcrafted area is the semi-solution to the horrendous exploration in the full procedural base-game. Because the base game generates points-of-interest so far from one another to create a sense of scale, exploration on release was a horribly boring slog, requiring you to run for minutes on end to get to the same copy-pasted building.
Before the release of the DLC, they introduced the Rev-8, a vehicle that could rapidly travel across Starfield's barren, boring worlds, effectively cutting down the minutes of running between the same copy-pasted buildings to 30 seconds or less. This didn't make exploration more fun, but it at least made it less boring, I suppose?
Now, with the release of Shattered Space, Bethesda has handcrafted an area for traversal with the Rev-8 in mind. So now, the massive distances and empty spaces between POIs are because the game expects you to just turbo boost towards every location in the handcrafted world. Ironically, the Rev-8 now makes natural, slow-paced, on foot exploration that could allow a player to stumble into interesting secrets or unmarked locations unlikely, so it seems Bethesda just foregoes them entirely.
Bethesda might have improved the horrendous procedurally generated content with the Rev-8, but the Rev-8 makes handcrafted areas genuinely worse because you are incentivized to speed through everything. The one upside to the handcrafted area is that the POIs are unique and are genuinely a big improvement on the game on that front, but the game still has no solution to make exploration fun, it just made it quicker. There is no need to explore, it is literally just a means to get to the next POI highlighted on your scanner. It might as well just be a loading screen to each isolated POI.

They never said the entire planet was handcrafted. That would be absurd and pointless (and an unnecessary waste of time), they said the handcrafted stuff was the expansion content, referencing the area, dazra, and points of interest where the dlc events take place. Each point of interest is distinctive and unique, inviting exploration in a more interesting way than in the base game, something players have asked for and the studio has provided.

For Oblivion, they wouldn't call Pelinal Whitestrake "A Divine Crusader"because that makes a Chrostian reference and is offensive to Muslims. They wouldn't have him slaughtering and massacaring elves either.

I remember talking to anyone who would give me the time of day, and being amazed how they all actually had names instead of a bunch of 'Markarth Resident' or whatever. I remember actually WANTING to engage with the world around me, because it was all interesting.
Now, I won't claim a good part of it isn't that I'm old and crusty now, I absolutely am, but I just... don't feel that, for something like Starfield. Maybe it was because I was playing it on my cousin's computer and thus I wasn't really as invested as if I had got it myself, maybe I had already subconsciously accepted that I didn't like Starfield before even touching it, but I just... wasn't interested in anything going on. Nothing grabbed me, nothing made me want to dig deeper, nothing on the maps caught my eye and made me go 'oooh, let's look there!' There were no nooks and crannies for me to dig through any more. No doors I saw out of the corner of my eye that I wanted to go in that I wasn't already being directed to. No one I wanted to talk to, not even the people I HAD to talk to.
I just... didn't care for anything Starfield offered.

i don’t think it’s just ‘cause you’re older; there’s definitely a massive dip in quality with Starfield in comparison to Skyrim. and i don’t think it’s just from looking at Skyrim with “rose-tinted glasses” either.
i remember there was a video i watched, about Starfield, that talked about how any time you approached an NPC, even if they were in the middle of a convo, that all NPC would stop and stare at you. which can create this sort of hollow, uncanny feeling to the game because the only thing that ends up mattering is you, the player, rather than whatever the NPC is doing or even the world at large. it basically feels like none of the characters have their own lives, stories or dialogue outside of talking to the Player, which then makes everything SO bland.
as you pointed out, when going through Skyrim, which i absolutely love that game, you wanted to learn EVERYTHING. from the characters to the landscape to the cities and villages because the NPC/ locations exist outside of just the Player existing. these characters and places don’t simply exist to fill the player’s time, it’s there with the feeling of having a sense of purpose. there’s that feeling of history, of things that happen with or without you around, before you were ever even placed into that world. which, in turn, it creates a sense of wonder and excitement.
tldr: it’s just so upsetting to see Bethesda crank out such a lifeless game that could have had a lot potential in the right hands :(

starfield barely has any unique loot. in skyrim you could find something in a hovel that you couldnt find anywhere else. the most unique loot in starfield is given to you on NG+ and its a ship you cant even customize, which was one of the best parts of the game. even fallout 4 with its randomly generated legendaries has not only unique weapons and armor, but unique clutter decorations in certain explorable locations, things you dont see anywhere else.
that is what gives the player a reason to explore and do the questlines, the *potential* of the possible rewards motivates you to keep searching, to see if you missed anything.
in starfield you can buy everything in the game from the first general store if you refresh it enough times at a high enough level.

If you choose to Submit to the Speaker at the glowy gate thingy, your character kneels down and the screen fades to black before the game loads your last checkpoint - there is no "bad" ending choice for the player.
Also, you can''t actually kill any named NPCs until their dialogue option specifically says [ATTACK] - they're always invulnerable to death before you've chosen that dialogue option with them.

I will not be surprised if modders are expected to fill in all of that space somehow which leads to the final issue that won’t be going away anytime soon. This may seem like nothing to English-speaking players, but as a French, the minute I started the DLC and noticed the companions had different voice actors compared to the base game, I knew it would be... another average Starfield experience. Honestly, I feel lost by the game. There are parts of it that I love and care about, like the SysDef / Crimson fleet questline. It makes me wonder why the game wasn't like this for everything else, with something that has more background and research overall.
It feels non-cohesive at best. Even if I'm not a fan of all the multiple universes thing, they could have done better stuff, like altering quests in a much bigger way than just adding a small dialogue option where you can say specific stuff because you "know things."
I found it ironic when I used my powers on my NG+, but no one cared about it at Constellation. But when you discover the first temple, people are like, "Wait, you have powers now?" The game isn't bad, but while they were working on it, they didn't know where the story would end up and evolve. Many things look like patchwork, as if that game is just a storyboard where multiple pieces collide and try to work.
I spend many hours playing the game because I love sci-fi and RPGs. I swear, the minute the new Mass Effect or a similar title comes out, I'll move on and never look back. It's not Skyrim, where just listening to the music would bring me heaps of nostalgia.
