Nice ride but remember that this is a 50 year old engine. The seals in the engine are probably all shot. The smoke you see is likely oil being sucked into the engine. First thing to do is remove the engine and replace both seals. I would recommend that all seals in the engine be replaced. After reassembling the engine do a leak down test just to make sure. A leaky intake gasket can be really exciting as the engine will keep revving to the moon. If that happens you can even turn off the ignition and it will keep revving. Hit the choke and hope it stops(it usually does). Second, check the exhaust pipe and pull the baffle and get your propane torch and burn off the crap filling the holes. That is likely the cause of the top enf not being crisp. With the smoke(transmission oil) being burnt the baffle will clog up quickly. Third, fix the brakes and get a new chain before you ride it again. 😜 Great bike. Big bore two strokes are the most fun you can legally have! Yeah, they vibrate and are noisy and pollute the air horribly, but man are they fun.
These were a man's bike. Worth fixing. Pretty easy to work on. Doesn't look like the right flywheel nut, but it might not matter. The whole bike needs a restoration imo. My brother had two 250's, a 76/77 and a 78, I always liked the 400. Yours look pretty low mileage. I love it. ❤️
1977-78 have the Hitachi electrical system which is a lot better than previous but regardless, your source coil is going to fail and leave you stranded eventually. You may never be able to achieve proper combustion if its weak. But since its the hitachi system it will probably last awhile with just the coil replaced. I love these bikes. If you do happen to replace the electrical they are incredibly reliable bikes.
Thanks for the info, I'll see if this has the original coil. I did figure out yesterday that it is not charging the battery, I suspect the regulator has failed but haven't tested it yet.
Hi. Nice bike. I had one in the 1990 bought it for £50 quid. I rebuilt it but used it for off road. Mine did have the decompression cable that combines with the kick start but never used it. I did the frame in purple because that was Yamaha colour back then. When you kick bring the piston to the top then use your body weight to kick it over or connect the cable to the kick start for the decompression. I fitted longer front forks and raised the back up it was a lot better. There’s not many of these bikes left mine was red and white. Nice bike you’re enjoy it a lot. UK
@@ForceMotothat's exactly it, valve grinding compound and a few twists/spins, same as valves it should be a nice dull colour, but all over the taper surface.
I know its supposed to start easer and sheared key was problem but as for me if i leave my 600r or my cr 500 setting more than a couple months i roll them off the first time nice bike by the way
woodruff key...i had plenty of them fail in my bultaco trials bikes from not tightening the flywhel properly...which was actually nearly impossible to tighten.
Two stroke bikes I had started easily usually 4 stroke such as big thumping xl 500 not so much. 😮btw dont overtighten thats worse than undertight as damage threads are a pain use torque wrench. 😊
My first bike was a new XL500S 1979 ( first year ) It was pretty easy to start if tune right and if you knew how to. My friend's 1977 TT500 was the same .
Dt400 a monster 2stroke from yamaha Always wanted this bike The early one But kicking them is another Event I call it a leg/knew destroyer Thats what kept me back But i have the rd350 easier to kick
I've got a 1979 it400 someone changed the flywheel not kicks like a mule I can't even start it. I try to do top bed sooner than put the flywheel back on and that mother kicksback harder. I'm about ready to just scrap the damn thing
In 1977 the Yamaha TT500 4 strokes had a viewing window on the head . For easy start , at compression you pull the decompressor lever and slowly turn the motor until the little tab show in the little window .You are then right past the compression and ready to kick it .
These are great old bikes. I had a DT 250 and a DT 175MX for years and they were super reliable, but their electricals are dodgy. One little moan though. No gloves on and its been snowing?
Less than 1 minute in but have to ask...You bought it without seeing it run? Nice looking bike, was well cared for. Those bars tho, almost ape hangers. lolol
I purposely buy bikes that don't run because they are cheap and I can make money fixing them. But this one did fire up and run poorly before I bought it.
Get some gloves. You'll thank me later because you will fall off at some point. Clean the carb and check the jetting against stock jetting. You might not be getting enough fuel at high rpm. Check where the slide lock is at too.
So cool man. I bought a 78 dt400b and I have been restoring it the past year and a half. I want to be riding it this summer.

That oil light is working just how it supposed to, if it illuminates when in gear top up ya 2t 👍
My ts 400 has the same problem kicks me every time. Yours sounds good . Thanks for the video cause I was so disappointed in how mine runs
Looks like a cool bike☆

I wouldn't ride it too far with that chain. It needs a little oil. Great video, thanks.
Keep your foot on the kickstarter
Exactly - and make sure you go right the way through.
🤣🤣🤣🤣my 9 year old daughter can kick start these bikes ( no problem)
nice you got it sorted, might want to lap that flywheel taper to ensure it doesn't happen again :)
How do I do that? I've lapped valves but never a crankshaft. Would I just use a grinding compound and spin the flywheel around on it?

Nice job kid

That's a lot of bike. When running right that's a fast bike
It's definitely got a lot of torque! Not as fast as modern 250 2 strokes though.
@@ForceMotoYour bike definitely needs some tuning
my husky always kicks back when it's too rich
The spark arresters do clog up you just pull it out and burn it off. ( torch)
Buy a Vape ignition system, that'll sort it, set the timing and it'll fire up every time
I had an old Sportster that launched me over the handlebars. Really hard to look cool that way.

Nice Video is it for sale ??😊
Nice bike
Sonds a bit muffeld but nice
The oil light is correct, [ bulb check is when in neutral] it flickers when 2stoke tank is low, check the neutral light bulb will be blown .
Good to know! I was about to try and fix the oil light, but now I'll jusy focus on the neutral light. Thanks!
It probably has a compression release on it is there a viewing bubble on the head

Hey did u figure out the starting issues??
Compression release on it
I'm 63 have no problem starting minebetter go to the gym
Try an 84 cr 500..

You're right, it's smart to always wear gloves. Especially if the roads are slick. I'll definitely wear all my gear when I take this bike to a trail!
Check the rear muffler, mine was caked full of oil & carbon robbing it from full power
