Chris - thank you so much for this video and the FB recommendation, I wish I had found this 12 weeks ago, but better late than never.
I fractured my left tibial plateau on 3/24/23, skiing; the initial pain was brutal. Ski patrol was amazing and so was the Emergency staff in the ski town (Mammoth Lakes, CA). I had surgery on 3/28/23 and now have a plate and three screws. For those of you who are just recently post surgery-- let me tell you it gets better. Early on I had several days where I would burst into tears, feeling helpless and hopeless. But, as with most crying, I felt a lot better after letting it out!
Today is week 12 post surgery!!!! I started weight bearing about 4 days ago with crutches. Not easy, but each day slightly better.
Looking back I can categorize the 12 weeks (post op) as follows: The first four weeks (weeks 1-4) were all about pain management, trying to get comfortable to sleep, and managing going to the bathroom (a function we take for granted until a TPF!). The middle four weeks (weeks 5-8) were about getting some range of motion and getting out of bed and moving a lot more and still pain management (but not as much). The last four weeks (weeks 9-12) were about containing the boredom and trying to not go stir crazy and wanting independence (driving, walking, etc.). Wishing you all a speedy recovery!

Mine was a skiing accident also. One plate and five screws. I'm coming up on two years from surgery. I'm about 80% back. Still some occasion pain and stiffness. Skied last year and plan on skiing this year too. I go nice and easy. No more speed runs or jumps / moguls.

Glad to hear stories like this. Had my TPF happen on 05/27/22, left knee along with a near complete tear of my left ACL/MCL and some ripping to my meniscii. I was non-weight bearing at all for about 3 months and my whole leg's muscles atrophied in that time (especially the quad). It's been a hell of a journey. Got my ACL reconstruction surgery on 08/18/2023 (they waited so long to see how much function I would get back relying entirely on physical therapy. Plus I had an existing DVT from Covid in December '20 that prolonged the whole process). As of this writing today, they're just about ready to send me back to work and I'm feeling confident I can handle my physical job at last. Anybody with a similar or identical injury, it DOES get better. Just keep reminding yourself that you're always healing and getting stronger than you were, day to day. With an injury like this, your hardest day really was yesterday.

Needed this. I am 2 weeks post surgery. Had TPF in the right leg. The negative thoughts, the depression has been killing me. The fact that not a single friend showed up to see me has been very eye-opening.
My gf is taking complete care of me. She is my power and inspiration. Such a pure soul❤. I just feel I am a burden on her tho...and these thoughts are killing me on the inside. My non-weight bearing time is about 6 weeks doc said. I am in the 3rd week now. Hopefully this time gets over soon. I just wanna be able to get back to my life.
If you are going through this, I hope your loved ones, your family and your friends are there for you. This is very tough time.

My mom took care of me and was so hard, cause she is old and she had a kidne operation 1 months before my trouma. During 1st month, i was like a log. I was sleepy, and without energy, i didn't want to eat anything. Anyway, walk a lot, do exercise and you will recover faster. Just move your leg when you are lying or sitting, that helps a lot

Wow, wow, wow. I joined your TPF club September 2020. 1plate and 12 screws, 5 days in the hospital, a walker, a cane, 6 months of PT have past. I’m now 69, walking, able to do squats and able to get up from the floor even though it isn’t pretty! I have worked very hard to recover physically. But I still have flashbacks of my accident that scare me. I’ve never met anyone with this injury. I’m often afraid I’m going to fall and re-injure my knee. I’m paralyzed to run. I always say the only way I’m running is if the tiger is chasing me.
I’m gonna look up the Facebook group, I think reaching others that have gone through this painful injury will help me emotionally. Thank you so much for making the video I needed to find my community. God bless you.

I slipped off a step stool putting up Christmas light the end of Nov 2022. I ended up fracturing my knee, TPF. I also waited until the next day going to emergency hoping it would somehow get better. I was placed in a brace and just felt sorry for myself
Yours is the first video I’ve found that talks about the depression that I feel and the worry about what may happen. Thank you
After 4 weeks, they’ve released the knee lock on my brace and I’m starting on leg extensions, knee and leg lifts and ankle stretches. I’m still non-weight bearing. Re-evaluate in another 4 weeks

This is the first time I logged into TH-cam just to tell my story.... June 30th, 2023 I went out with friends to the lake with some jet skis. When it was my time to ride the skis, I hopped on and started doing the absolute most resulting in me hitting 2 waves within 2 seconds and causing me to fall off. I knew when I came above surface something was wrong and you're right, the pain was absolutely awful. I went to the hospital right after and found out I broke my tibia in 3 different places and fractured my ankle. The next day I had surgery where they added an external fixator into my leg to keep my bones in place until the swelling went down. On July 14th I had my second surgery where they removed the external fixiator and put in rods and plates into these areas. After surgery I ended up having complications of too much blood loss and passed out 3x resulting in me getting admitted for the night.
Its been 5 days and I feel so hopeless.. I do not want to give up but I feel as if I can't do anything anymore. Physically im constantly in main, mentally Im all over the place because I had a falling out with my family yesterday and emotionally, all I ever want to do is cry.
Im currently home alone and told myself I needed to get up and find some encouraging videos and fell upon yours.... Seeing you continue to move and not give up was all the motivation I needed so I needed to tell you myself thank you so much for telling the world your story. "My injury is life changing not life ending" will be instilled into me in all aspects of my life.

Chris, I and others on this thread genuinely appreciate your sharing of event leading up to your injury and the detailed timeline of events post operative during your recovery. You and I both share several things. Large men that love running and staying busy. I as well have trusted in God to give me the strength and will power to push through the discomfort and rehabilitate this injury the best I possibly can. April 7th of this year, 2023, I found myself in southern California at Huntington Beach, Orange County, while playing beach volleyball in the sand along the pacific coastline. Beautiful day, great vibes, positive attitudes, and lots of sun. One play was all it took. I'm 6'4'' at 250 pounds and in very good shape. Muscular build and very strong bones. I jumped up for a spike, and upon landing, a guy on the opposing team somehow tripped and fell over onto my side and landed on the outside of my left knee while my left foot was planted in the sand and caused my leg to collapse inwardly. Immediately we all heard a loud snap. Sounded like a branch being snapped in half in a rapid movement. I fell onto the ground and noticed my leg was distorted (misaligned) and not too soon afterwards, the pain set in and was excruciating. I was then rushed to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, CA and the X-Ray revealed a closed left tibial plateau fracture. Went into surgery three days later after the swelling subsided.
I spent 1 week in the inpatient due to elevated blood pressure and monitoring of possible blood clotting in the injured leg. I was then discharged and transition immediately to physical therapy for 11 days which was a big help due to the PT(s) really pushing me on increasing range of motion. I was instructed to be non weight bearing for 12 weeks, but I'm a little stubborn and could not resist bearing at least some weight. Within 3 weeks, I began nearly full weight bearing just because I felt that my bones were strong enough to handle the stress of the pressure from my weight without altering the plate and 3 screws that were in my knee. I am now 5 weeks post injury and am walking full weight bearing with very minimum pain if any throughout my entire day. I do understand that this does come with a risk and I may end up having to pay for it later, but this was a risk I was willing to take due to needing to return to my employments. I am both a military servicemember and a law enforcement officer. If I do not return to 80%, or running fluently with no issues in passing the performance physical fitness tests that are required, I will not be able to be employed in either capacity.
Please throw in a prayer for this man and I'm wishing healing, recovery, and longevity to each patron on this forum.

The bone should be fully healed in about 3 months time, maybe little more or less. As long as you didn't rip or tear any tendons or ligaments(like I did), it's just a matter of strength and gait training from your physical therapy. Good luck!

I need to thank you. Just four days ago I got my TPF. I work in an Emergency Room, as the Unit Coordinator. While attempting to medicate an aggressive psych patient, I slipped and fell in some self-induced vomit. Heard a loud pop, and went down. Thankfully, I was surrounded by my coworkers (Doctors and nurses) and already in the ER. They put me on a gurney and before I got settled, the radiology team was doing x-rays.
My work in the ER is my passion. I love going to work, been there for four years, it truly is what I was made to do. Then, reading about the injury I sustained, and the time I would have to be gone, put me in a funk. I sent a text to my girlfriend, who is the night shift AOD, (runs the whole hospital at night)Nighy, telling her that I was down in the dumps. She cheered me up with a video call from the ER, and was able to talk with my friend and coworkers. It really helped, but I still felt kinda low.
Flipping through TH-cam to see what kind of recovery time I was up against, I discovered your video. Your situation, your words, your example is very inspiring. Thank you for putting this together. Thank you for the insight and thank you for your courage.

October 29th ( my bothers bday) and 17 wheeler wasn’t paying attention and crashed into me. My heart stopped for over 2 hours and both of my femurs were broken and so was my Tibial plateau. I’m not allowed to be weight bearing at all on my left because of both of the breaks. Seeing someone go through something I am and coming out perfectly fine is such an inspiration. Thank you so much for posting this

Had TPF 12/11/22 due to a car accident. My tibia was among the many bones I broke that day but continues to be the most painful. I had surgery the day after my accident to put in the plate and 10 screws. I was nwb for 14 weeks and then slowly got back to walking. However I could only walk so far before the plate caused intense pain. I could barely walk, couldn’t jump, go up stairs, run, etc. the plate greatly limited my mobility so my surgeon and I opted to have it removed. Tomorrow I’ll be 2 weeks post op from the hardware removal and I have a strong feeling it was worth it even though I’m still nwb. I’m only 22, and couldn’t imagine living the rest of my life with the plate pain. I’m glad it’s gone and looking forward to getting back to walking and hopefully running again now that I don’t have the hardware!

Thank you so much for sharing your story and the words of encouragement. I had my surgery yesterday for the type 2 TPF. I have a plate and 7 screws along with bone fillers to fill the depressed cancellous bone. I have been a very active person. I feel stressed about getting back to normal. I worry about being able to do all the things like workout, hiking, swimming again without worrying about the past fracture.
All I have in my control right now is to seek the help of God and push through to become stronger.
Thanks again and I loved your encouragement.

I also found your video searching for TPF recovery tips. 9 weeks ago my dog ran into my leg, fracturing my tibia. Later that day I fell on crutches and fractured both wrists. It's been an adventure, ;-) but although we don't currently have insurance and I need to figure out the rehab myself, I am blessed with a lot of amazing support and have seen God work through this situation. Thank you for sharing your encouraging and inspiring story.

So grateful to have found your video & reading all of the comments lets me know I’m not alone. I fell & suffered a TPF on 4/1/22. Even my doctor was astounded at my “weird” fracture. Had surgery to repair with a plate & screws on 4/18/22 & was non weight bearing for 3 months. Started PT for walking about 3 weeks ago. It’s slow going but I refuse to use the wheelchair anymore. My problem is that when I walk too much, my leg, ankle & foot swell up to twice the normal size. It’s so frustrating! I’m trying to take it day by day & trust in the Lord that I’ll get there eventually. I wish my work understood. I can tell they’re frustrated that I still need to work remote but the office is in a high rise building & it takes too much walking to get up there. Sending love & prayers for healing to the other members of the TPF Club. We’ll get through this!

4 weeks post Type 6 tibial plateau fracture with a snapped fibula. Did it in Japan snowboarding. Been trying to bend my knee to 90, as my surgeon (who isn’t too nice) said was necessary immediately after surgery. Can only get to 70 degrees sitting down. Pain is still pretty bad too. Can extend to 0 degrees fine but I hope this gets better. This video was very encouraging.

    Life changing, well said !
31.01 accident, broke my left leg when a wave hit me at knee level, on a sand beach, ridiculously stupid, but it happened and it was my fault, should my leg have been bender wouldn’t have broken it. Xrayed and put in brace. TIP do not bear weight on the injured leg, lift it up on pillows and apply ice. Ask to be started on blood thinners daily injections to eliminate thrombosis.
06.02 made it to the hospital back from holidays, start of pre-op. TIP ask questions, prepare them in advance and ask your surgeon and nurses. Get books and videos coz you’ll be there for the long haul. Monitor your TI daily, if you don’t go number 2, alert them immediately.
08.02 surgery, open reduction with sutures on meniscus, cadaver bone graft, one plate and one rod, 13 screws. TIP manage your pain, manage your TI. Watch your sleep time, take a break, rejoice, the hardest is at home.
14.02 out of hospital wearing a brace and asked to do 6 weeks of non bearing weight. Light PT. TIP go easy on pain meds, they kill your transit, bring sweats, mess with your sleep patterns and totally screw your libido.
Week 2: staples ablation, first full shower TIP massage your scar, make sure it slides over your skin, always compare to the healthy leg. Apply vitamin E ointment, make sure your shower is equipped with a chair, avoid tripping or falling again.
Week 3 to 6: PT and ice. Fight that edema until it’s down. Prefer using a walker over the crutches. Bend your knee during PT, do get that 90 degrees if not painful.
Week 6: met with surgeon, added 4 extra weeks, it’s okay, take it well, it’s for your good sake. Allowed me 50% bearing weight, which is crap doesn’t make diff with NBW. Enjoy life, hammer that PT program they give you.
To all fellow injured friends: it’s okay, it ain’t the end, we are survivors, we support each other !

I broke my tibula and fibula right on my shin about a month and a half ago. This was thankfully a straight break across. When I got home from the hospital I cried for 3 weeks because I couldn't bend my knee and my leg was swollen as heck and I had never broken anything before so this was unbelievable pain. What got my knee stronger were leg lifts off of the couch with your leg straight and i kept trying to lay down and pull my knee up as much as possible but not tooooo much where you'll tear anything. The #1 thing that got my knee back to bending was a stationary bike. After a month I started this and I am now allowed to walk but I'm flat footed and those nails they put in are right there on my flat side. I can walk but with a limp. My problem now after using that bike a mile or two daily is my foot and putting 100% of weight down when I'm walking. It sucks but my knee was also the scariest thing ever and now that I can bend it I'm so relieved.

They can tell you all they want when you are on the gurney but to actually live through it the last 2 years have been nuts! I had a fall about 6 weeks ago and reinjuried it where my ortho said if we would have taken the hardware out I would have rebroken it. Congratulations on your success and your faith. 9 months out from my TBF from wakeboarding, 5 fractures. Still have pretty severe nerve damage in my foot and my ankle and foot get stabbing pains. My atrophy in my quad is what is limiting me because I’m still weak. I was very active prior to this so I hope I’ll be back to normal this time next year. Have already played about 7 rounds of golf with lots of soreness and stiffness the next day. This is a long road and wouldn’t wish this on anybody.

I jumped off a log at my daughters on Easter Day. When I landed I felt something pull, pop or break, I thought I’m hurt. My grandson helped me gimp up the hill and drove me home. My knee swelled up three times it’s size. I called my new doctor and had a video visit. I waited for 5 days for a call from radiology to set up an appointment. No one called so went to the ER to have an X-ray.
Docs came in said I broke my TBF. He said how old are you? I said 67 he said your one tough lady. I call the orthopedic surgeon in the morning and make an appointment.
I can’t get used to these crutches. I’m walking on it as little as I can. When you live alone it’s hard to stay off it. Reading everyone’s post gave me some helpful information. Thanks for sharing the Facebook info.

2,5 months ago, i stumbled upon a dog and fell from a stair. It was my fault. i didn't watch where i was going. After operation, i spend 8 weeks at home and then get 5 weeks rehabilitation in a hospital (i am o my last week there). I had TPF, tibia, and lateral maleol fractures. The first 3 weeks at home was very hard. I felt weakeness and sleepy and ni apetite. I felt so bad that i couldn't do anything. The doctor didn't explaned to me anything so i had to do my research. In rehab, i learn so much, and i can bend my knee 50-degree angle and learn to walk part weight bearing with a walker. I forget how to walk, and still sometimes i lift my leg automatically 😅 till need lots of to work with "frosen" ancle and a knee. Before, my mom always said that i am walking too fast, and now other old patients, most with knee or hip replacement, walking faster than me. 😅
I noticed that most people don't understand this injury. They are like: it's more than 2 months passed, how come you still don't walk...

shew, broke my left tibial plateau when I was 17. That was probably 1981 or so. I'll be 58 in March. Broke it playing basketball, warming up. Nobody around me, someone shot the ball, i jumped for a rebound, heard a pop. Found myself sitting on the court, legs up to my chest and left leg sunk in at the kneecap. I knew I was messed up. My buddies got me up and my leg sort of pop back out and started swelling. Took me to ER, surgery the next morning. 28 days in the hospital. 8 weeks in a straight cast. 8 weeks in a straight splint. Some of the most painful physical therapy that I have ever encountered. I'm sure things are alot better now a days compared to when my injury took place. Good to see you are recovering. My knee, so far has never really given me a problem. It grinds and pops but maybe the replacement can be put off a while longer..the original surgeon told me by age 55 I'd have to have it replaced. Keep on keeping on!!!!

Once I read my MRI results I became depressed! I played it off for family and friends, but deep down inside I was worried about recovery and the scars that would be left on my leg (yes! I am vain!). Anyway, I said all this to say that watching your video brought tears to my eyes, because like you I did it to myself! I also love the fact that you openly professed your faith! As soon as I am cleared I too will not be running but swimming so I reduce onset of arthritis. Until then I will be living life to best of ability ✨️

I was recently hit by a vehicle making a right turn as I was walking in crosswalk. Broken left shoulder, badly broken left ankle (required surgery next day), right tibial plateau fracture that does not require surgery. And broken front tooth with bite out of alignment. I am very happy for your recovery! I head to a rehab center soon. Hoping to resume walking and safe hiking when I am able. I am not weight bearing for at least 3 months. I am not working for at least 3 months. Your video is very encouraging. Thank you.

Crazy to think I'm not the only one wanting to push thru this type of injury except your lucky it was one leg I broke both my legs right below the knees when a buck jumped out in front of me on my dirt bike and I hit an oak tree head on at 40 mph head on man it is a hard recovery I'm about three months past now but I was up walking on one leg 3 days after surgery

Chris you're so right, Life changing but not life ending. I fell on July 16, 2022 jumped off the back of a trailer my flip flop caught the edge of the trailer and the asphalt caught me. Broke my right radius and left TPF with 8mm displacement. Didn't have surgery until Aug 5, 2022. I have been Blessed because I did my surgery (on both) same day as outpatient and I didn't have much pain. Returned back to work on Sept 12, 2022 in a wheelchair. I have physical therapy twice a week (thank God for PT), which was started on August 29. I couldn't use crutches because right hand was in a cast. I was starting to get frustrated because I'm a very active person and I couldn't get around.Depression is real! I'm 3 months out from my surgery, just started walking without assistance, slight limp though. If I do too much or the weather is bad, my hand and left knee down to my foot swells bad. Compression socks are my friend! Makes my leg feel so much better. This video was very encouraging and I would like to encourage everyone to keep pushing. I'm 54 years old and I'm not giving up. Plan to hit the gym after my Nov 21 follow up visit with ortho, that is if he ok's it.

Thank you so much. Three weeks ago today I was run over by a surfer in Hawaii. After a week, I made the ten hour flight, and two hour drive home. I had surgery two weeks ago tomorrow. I’m a results now kind of person and this has been a struggle for me. I have guilt beyond measure!! Resting in Him has also been a struggle. Thank you for giving me the fight I know I have!!! I’ve watched your video over and over!!!

Currently in the recovery of TPF non surgical. By far one of the hardest things I’ve had to go through. Depression is real and it’s a fight you have to pull yourself out of. Thanks for your video and inspiration. My husband and I travel to AL often to fish, maybe we will see you out there one day!

I’m also on the 5th week non surgical. I’m not getting any advice from hospital as yet so looked online and omg this could be bad ! My cast is off in 2 days to be replaced with a brace which will have the angle changed every 2 weeks . Think I need to start asking some questions as assumed it was just a standard tibia break !

Slipped on Gravel and popped the Knee through 90 degrees of the Vertical landed on my side and after a few seconds it popped back , X ray and MRI denoted a hairline Crack of the Tibia Plateau, and the Consultant said the MRI denoted a grade 2 tear of the MCL... hinged brace and support crutches for Ten weeks, the swelling went away and i'm better than before as the i told the Consultant i had trashed it twenty five years previous, he reckoned the MCL had never recovered and that there was a weakness allowed for an unstable Knee which would swell up for a pastime prior to the fall so this caused my fall... the structure around the joint [MCL] came better than before thus giving me a stable platform... Sorted...

I just had the alls good for my doc , fractures healed after 11 weeks and can gradually walk unaided and brace off over the next month . Physio has been well worth it 👍

Thanks for this informational video. Just came out of surgery a few days ago. Doc said it will definitely be a tough journey but the plan is to keep a positive attitude and know that I have some tough work ahead of me.

I’m going on 2 months post-surgery, and progress is excruciatingly slow. The depression is real. Trying to stay motivated and upbeat is the biggest challenge I’ve ever had to deal with.

Good advice sir, this truly is life altering but not life ending - that is my mantra. I am 10 months post op from my Tibial Plateau Schatzker IV fracture with a full meniscal repair and 3 days after surgery had a pulmonary embolism settle in the lower right lobe of my lung. I was fully non weight bearing for 12 weeks and lost a considerable amount of muscle tone which has been my biggest hurdle in getting back to walking. This is a long haul injury and recovery is measured in extremely small gains, but they do happen if you are putting in the work with PT. Your mind can really start beating up your spirit and it's hard to stay positive, but you really need to not go down that rabbit hole too often. I know I will walk without a crutch or a cane eventually (I am now able to take about 14 steps simultaneously with a limp) and that it is just going to take time - something which my PT keeps reminding me of. I think one of the hardest things I found when researching this online was getting frustrated how some people are back to normal in a few months - so I started thinking why isn't that me and what am I doing wrong. Just remember, that your injury is not theirs and to not compare.

Love the positive video. 4 weeks into the process after 2 surgeries. 2 plates and 20 screws later I'm ready to start pushing to get active again.
