Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,
Wo mich des Lebens wilder Kreis umstrickt,
Hast du mein Herz zu warmer Lieb entzunden,
Hast mich in eine bessre Welt entrückt!
Oft hat ein Seufzer, deiner Harf entflossen,
Ein süsser, heiliger Akkord von dir
Den Himmel bessrer Zeiten mir erschlossen,
Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür!
Beloved art, in how many a bleak hour,
when I am enmeshed in life’s tumultuous round,
have you kindled my heart to the warmth of love,
and borne me away to a better world!
Often a sigh, escaping from your harp,
a sweet, celestial chord
has revealed to me a heaven of happier times.
Beloved art, for this I thank you!
Traumhaft.
Stimme.
Phrasierung.
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau ist nun selbst zum Weltkulturerbe geworden.
Vielen Dank!
Bitte sag mir welche stimmlage er ist

This gets me in the feels every time I hear it. I play it by ear at least one a day. Utter simplicity. Sublime beauty.
Du, lieber Dietrich, ich danke dir dafür!!
Francesco 90 This was lovely.
Nice to see this comment! I just posted: One might well sing this about Fischer-Dieskau himself. “An Herrn Fischer-Dieskau... O Gott, für diesen Meistersänger, ich danke dir!”
Yes, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau has “den Himmeln bessrer Zeiten für uns erschlosst” indeed!
I've first heard this in 1973 and have since never stopped listening to Schubert Lieder, usually sung by E. Schwarzkopf or D. Fischer-Dieskau😊
He didn’t have the most naturally resonant/powerful voice in history, but this man’s technique was probably better than any other male singer in history
And don't forget the greatest accompanist ever, Gerald Moore.
I agree....Moore WAS the greatest
and Leonard Hokanson ??
Malcolm Dale and I are going to be able to make it to the meeting on Friday and we will be able to make it to
george prentice by the way I am a little bit of a busy day for work and I am not sure what to do with my
Any young pianist that wants to learn and understand Schubert needs to listen to Schubert Lieder with Gerald Moore as accompanist.
I visited Franz Schubert's birth house in Vienna and listened to this piece (also Fischer Dieskau's) while looking outside his family's window. It was one of my dream places. I don't know. I felt so connected.
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskauis one of the greatest performers of all time, for sure.
Какая красивая ,нежная музыка прекрасное исполнение, обожаю Шуберта!
" Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür!".....God bless Schober, Schubert, Moore and oh my God, how thankful I am, that DFD's talent has been preserved and can still be shared with us.
bravaLiz Indeed, this is prayer.
Ich liebe auch deutsche Lieder. Ja, du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür. Vielen Dank!❤
Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,
Wo mich des Lebens wilder Kreis umstrickt,
Hast du mein Herz zu warmer Lieb entzunden,
Hast mich in eine beßre Welt entrückt,
In eine beßre Welt entrückt!
Oft hat ein Seufzer, deiner Harf entflossen,
Ein süßer, heiliger Akkord von dir
Den Himmel beßrer Zeiten mir erschlossen,
Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür,
Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir!
Absolute perfection! One of my favourite lieder singers……ever! The brilliant Gerald Moore, on piano!👏💐💖
I am doing this piece in my voice lessons and his amazing diction is very helpful for learning the piece. If you need a good example of german diction, this guy is your man.
You could also listen to Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (an other great example)! Fritz Wunderlich or Hermann Prey are other great sources! Only to name the greatest besides DFD!
A beautiful ode to music and art in general.
OoF
Sublime, como todo lo que escribió Schubert, sobre todo cuando lo canta Fischer-Dieskau. Gracias por compartir esta hermosura, y saludos cordiales.
Schubert..... Que pena nos dejo con 31 años.... Que pena.....
Wunderschön
This is the greatest video on all of TH-cam.
I was 14 when my HS chorus sang this. Twenty years later I heardFischer-Dieskau at lesSalles Pleyeli n Paris... I still tear up to this jewel.
RIP Goethe
RIP Shubert
RIP Moore
RIP Fischer-Dieskau
Possibly the greatest quartet music has to offer.
Absolutely!!!
The writer is Franz von Schober, not Goethe.
The writer is Franz von Schober, not Goethe.
Yes, people do die.
Im tiefen keller
Der Meister singt. Einfach zuhören und lernen, auch Gerald Moore spektakulär
I couldn't think of a better way to ring in the new year than by making this the first piece I listened to in 2015.
I agree with you Anne.....of all the Lieder ever written....this particular song has got to be the ultimate.....I learned it myself many years ago accompanied by my teacher Ramona Rockway......
All the memories!
The sweet simplicity of Schubert's music tones down Schober's florid yet heartfelt lyrics just enough to make this the most exquisite of hymns.

Beautiful voice and beautiful song!
Thank the Hundt Family Royal Jewellers and Armourers of Sandy Point NS from 1785-1979 for sharing their joy for music with me from aged four. God Bless You Joanna, my love.
An die is such a beautiful song to listen to
The British Library has the manuscript of this sublime song on display. You can put on headphones and listen to this being sung while looking at Schubert's manuscript. It would bring tears to my eyes, as the recollection of it is doing now. Du holde kunst, ich danke dich.
Sublime.. I adore Schubert! 🌻🙏💕🎉💯🥰🌹🥝💋❤️💥
Beautiful forevermore song!!

Was mich betrifft, kein Vergleich mit Fritz Wunderlich. Vielen Dank und LG aus Montreal, Qc, Canada
Beautiful 🌟💫🌟💕
I praise you Schubert
Schubert is exquisite!
That unique bari/tenor sound that Fischer Dieskau produced and, of course, his impeccable interpretations made him the greatest singer ever of Schubert lieder and quite possibly of all Art Songs.
Well, I do appreciate your comment. But my own personal candidate for "greatest singer of Lieder and of mélodies françaises" is Gérard Souzay.
Wonderful!🌹🌹🥀🌹🌹
Came here from Augustin Hadelich saying this song is really emotional :) Nice! I had never heard this before.
Siempre grande el maestro Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
小中高と8年間音楽の授業がありましたが
ある意味1番思い入れのある曲です
(大昔の話ですが)
Hast mich in eine bessre Welt entrückt
Already then Fischer-Dieskau was t h e master of Songs!
absolutely first class.
Beautiful words, music, and voice to match.
Beautiful. Everytime I watch to this, I like to imagine he’s really Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket.

Translation:
You lovely art, in how many gray hours,
Where I was stricken by life
You ignited my heart for warm love,
You brought me to a better world,
Brought me to a better world!
Often a sigh, that left your harp,
A sweet, holy chord from you,
Has shown me the existence of a better time
You lovely art, I thank you for it,
You lovely art, I thank you!
There is nothing to say. I am stum a combination with wonderful voice and a clear distinction that perhabs only Diskau con bring forward. And what a wonderful pianoplaying where he all the time follewed the singer.
Gerald Moore is the wonderful accompanist. There books and recordings by him on "The Unashamed Accompanist." Available on Amazon, maybe in your library. Another youtube video of him explaining the lyrics before he plays for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf to sing "An Die Musik." He collaborated with all the great voices of his time, it seems.
@@schapa-hx4kz And instrumentalists as well! Check out his recordings with Dennis Brain!
AMAZING MIRACLE
You could do a recital of Schubert Lieder with Gerald Moore sans rehearsal! Probably the finest and most flexible accompanist of the 20th century!
Superb voice of Dietrich, unsurpassed though I do love the timbre of Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel.
💞
Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,

One of my favorites. Interesting to contrast this with Fritz Wunderlich - lyric tenor vs lyric baritone - both great.
Even more interesting is when you bring in female singers ! Bumbry is heartbreakingly expressive in this music ; it is almost impossible to believe it is the same artist who stands up against High Priests !
Perfect.

+Christian Boteler Good luck! Or rather, I hope it went well!
Heaven will be all about music and peace
Of course, Good interpretations in young age DFD.
I really like his complete Schubert album vol-1 & vol-2 "An die Musik" with Moore.
He was reset himself, and discovered again the joy of singing for Schubert Leader.
^^
¡ Qué maravillosa voz !
Thank you
Schubert is delightful. I think to him as sort of a "Chopin of the voice", as he was able to say a lot just with a brief Lied, demonstrating you don't always need an Opera to go in depth.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
René Pariente: Magnifique FISCHER DISKAU
In 2022…and it is glorious
Some more of Gerald Moore would have been good!
💯
So... how long have we all been putting off learning this music for contest? Personally, I've only procrastinated for a week this time around, but this is an absolute first.
Bravo
Love
Unvergessliche Stimme, zeitloses Lied… ein Werk für die Ewigkeit! *
Unforgotten voice, timeless song… an opus for eternity!
I had music homework days ago..
Yeah... ditto. Here's to cramming hours before class. 🫡
Psg is a great place to work for and I am very excited about this opportunity and I look forward to working with you and your company
すごい素敵な声なんだ
Bravo,Maestro❤
The Master singing The Master.
I sung this song in choir once. It was cool.
good document, bravo!,- i.m interested in the origin of the oral transmission of the knowledgement in music, in the psychological conditioning factors
2022 he was the master
Capo total!!
Who's in 2025?🥰
so butiful
Hermoso!!!! :)
Still the gold standard for baritones as Elisabeth Schwarzkopf remains for sopranos! 🏆🏆
Elisabeth Swarzkopf - the gold standard for Nazis.
Absolute master
Du holde Kunsd, in vie-fiel grauen Stunden,

Hast du mein Herz zu varmer Lieb entzunden,
Hast mich in eine beßre Velt entrückt,
In eine beßre Velt entrückt!

Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir!
He emphasizes all the most important words: holde, grauen, heilige, usw.
His German is pretty good!!
좋아요^^~최고.
Lovely :O)
One might well sing this about Fischer-Dieskau himself. “An Herrn Fischer-Dieskau... O Gott, für diesen Meistersänger, ich danke dir!” -And as Mr Dale says: “...don’t forget ... Moore.”
It's funny, the first time I heard this song was when Garrett Morris sang it on SNL !
little incredible.... Schubert's original is in D.... Dietrichs version here is transposed to C
It is transposed for different voices. If Fischer-Dieskau were a tenor, he would have sung it in D! A basso would sing it in B flat or A. The same for mezzos and contraltos!
Romantic poetry from the German time period by JW Goethe. Statesman Jan Christian Smuts said the Romantic literature in England and Germany influences his whole life. His wife Iisie taught him Schubert Lieder and when they got married after 10 years of courtship and studies, the first item he purchased for the house, was a piano
Só o idioma alemão permite a performance do cantor. A nós, resta ouvir e aplaudir.
