Use other reasons for it, like Luffy used to be a character with nothing special, and now he's a God. But if you think about it Luffy's a very special kid from the very beginning of the story it's just people like you and me have been ignoring, the fact that his father's the Most wanted man of the sea, His grandfather the strongest marine, The devil fruit chose him which is also the reason shanks gave him 'roger's hat' and most important the 'D' in his name. Also Shanks stole the DF from the Marines so Shanks knew it was a special fruit and he brought that to that east blue island to give it to Ace but the fruit chose Luffy, Everything makes sense if you really care and think about it, also everything I said are not theories and speculation it's all true and canon.
I actually full heartedly believe that Garp used Haki to punch Luffy when he was first introduced. Like I honestly think that was one of the first proper forshadowing that Armament Haki existed in the series. Like just because we didn't see Garps hands glow black doesn't mean he didnt use it. Oda has stated before that, in universe, characters don't actually turn their body parts black when they use armament. Its just shown that way to us so we don't have to have luffy scream "I AM PUTTING ON ARMAMENT NOW!" every single time he punches someone.just so that we, the audience, would know he is in fact still using it. So like i honestly believe several characters used Haki before it was introduced, we just simply didn't see it happen because, since neither the straw hats nor us the viewer knew it existed at that point, there was no reason to show it to us.
While I am also of the opinion that all of Haki is invisible, when it comes specifically to armament Haki, there is no official statement from Oda about whether it’s visible or not. I could just have missed it but I’ve done a decent amount of research on this topic
I was gonna disagree with you but from what I remember I think Luffy was asleep when Garp punched him. So he wouldn’t of been afraid cause he didn’t know who hit him ? Maybe the punch felt like Garps so he thought about it and he got a lump ? But the idea of luffy getting lumps only because he’s actually scared of someone and not because it actually hurts is to good to not go with 😭
@@jojobravo3829 yeah, I love this theory and definitely want it to be true. But I’m also not disagreeing that armament Haki was used before it was really introduced. Like when Rayleigh blocked Kizaru’s kick and it didn’t show him using any visible armament Haki. It seems pretty clear to me that Oda didn’t have all the details of Haki armored out (pun intended) pre-timeskip and that’s why there are a few uses of it without the ordinary visual cue for the readers/watchers.

But like even if the joke of him thinkning it happened isn't the reason why Garps hit hurt, it is 100% the reason why Nami has been able to hurt Luffy since easy blue lol. So like even if Garp's punch was foreshadowing of haki, we still get to keep the joke alive through Nami!!
Also if I remember correctly, Luffy specifically says in that seen "And why do your punches alway hurt? I'm made of rubber! They aren't supposed to hurt!" or something along those lines, so like that really makes me lean towards garps moment being Haki. Because if anything, at that moment Luffys brain told him the punch shouldn't hurt, but yet it still did.
I wonder if Luffy will be like the Orks from warhammer 40k. They also have the power of dumb imagination/belief that makes things come to reality. For example things being red=faster or a specific guy being believed to be strong makes him way stronger than he should naturally be. This could mean that Luffy's belief that Garp is unbelievably strong could potentially make him stronger.
I kinda doubt it tbh because 1. it would ruin the narrative tension, 2. imply that Luffy has this OP passive ability with infinite range which doesn't align with what we know about devil fruits and 3. also buff enemies that seem impossible to defeat.

That isn't how the Orks work at all. Orks have to actually believe in whatever it is not just imagine it. Believing in something and imagining something are similar but completely different. Belief is actually thinking something is reality even if it isn't. Very similar to faith. Imagining something could be something as simple as Luffy imagining how cool he would look with a pair of shades while he smacks the hell out of a leopard man. By contrast an Ork has to actually have a pile of junk to make a gun and then has to believe that this pile of random nuts and bolts and a block of wood fashioned to look like a gun, actually is a gun for it to actually shoot. If anyone other than a Ork picked up the weapon the Ork was just shooting then it wouldn't even work for them. Same with Ork ships being a massive pile of basically junk that just resembles a ship but still works. Also has to be more than one Ork for it to be effective. One Ork believing something really wouldn't be able to change much. A large group of Orks say a ship load of Orks or an Ork warband. Ork powers aren't quite as broken as a lot of people think they are. Orks aren't reality warpers more reality influencers. Also Orks are so stupid they aren't even aware of that ability. In a way the ability probably wouldn't even work if Orks knew about it because that would shake Orc believe as to whether or not something really works or if they are just making it work. Orks have to honestly believe something with everything they have. Luffy seems to be catching on to what his ability is and seems that is making it stronger though there probably is some limitations on his ability which haven't been revealed yet.

I always liked the idea that Garp taught Luffy "life return" during his training as a young kid and that is how he heals and digests so much food.

Another thing not many people notice. Grogy and dorry use a combined attack to help the strawhats leave the island. The move was called “hakoku” or warrior nation. Big mom uses an attack that’s similar called “ikoku Sovereignty” or mighty nation. Which parallels her ties to the giants.
Big mom and Kaido also used a combined attack that was very similar.
Although, Roger also uses a similar attack called “divine departure” i haven’t understood his connection.

It’s odd, but this is how you create diversity in a show. The writing is so good, you don’t even realize that the characters are portraying different real world races. And the fact that the show is this old and the majority of people are just now realizing this. It brings a smile to my face

Haki has been used long before the time skip. The skypieans “mantra” = observation haki.

Honestly I even before the REAL name of Luffy's DF was revealed I had a suspicion that Luffy's power could subconsciously "shut off" when faced with threats from people he actually fears out of love, like Nami and Garp, and that Garp in particular was aware of this property and referred to it as his "fist of Love", which was always intended to be a very direct hint about how and why the power works, and consequently that the power of the DF's can not only be EXPANDED-on with imagination, but also limited.

As I posted before, since the revelation of gear 5, I have started to rewatch one piece for the 4th time with the new information and I can honestly see this. Everytime something out the ordinary happens, it is around luffy and is definitely connected to the fruit. It has been a fun watch to say the least. I would advise anyone to do the same
The fact oda did this fruit switch and it's not being torn to shreds is amazing. Also I think it's luffy can subconsciously tell the hit that's coming isn't like an enemy punch its nami and he knows he deserves it. And he just fears garp on every level. So the fruit just knowns to let him take it. Unless what was said does contradict that I didn't get that alot.

What if Shanks, knowing the power of his devil fruit, manipulated Luffy by putting his hat on Luffy knowing that as long as Luffy idolizes Shanks, he inadvertantly gets a power-up from the power of Luffy's imagination. He literally sacrificed his arm to the owner of a godly fruit to gain the favor of the owner of that fruit So by idolizing Shanks, Luffy gives Shanks more power thanks to the inherent power of his Devil Fruit. So Shanks couldn't eat the Fruit, but he still benefits from Luffy's power since his straw hat is constantly in Luffy's mind. You mentioned Garp and Nami in your theory, but it also would affect Shanks, who made sure that Luffy witnessed his crew saving him.

I did know that Jango's chin thing was a mushroom stock. For a long time I thought it may have something to do with DFs simply because it was a food stuff that tasted bad and gave strange powers. This was back in 200X sometime and I never thought it was a DF but a clue to the mysteries of One Piece.
