If you have any other questions feel free to comment down below! I did notice the 4k 60p codec falls a part quite a bit faster in grading than the other codecs but still worked pretty dang well.
Matti Haapoja ok dude real comment how can I contact any of you guys about a proposal.... like not marry you guys but an idea which is like to discuss in private along those lines...
Hey, Mati me again there a Fuji app the lets u used your phone as the lcd displays and u can see yourself when u doing blog or whatever. ibis stabilization are on the lenses only yeah I know it suck but I think is still a great camera. most of the time I have it on a tripod or a gimbal. I really like it cause is not really heavy even with the grip. Thank you for the time u took to do this video. My lil setup is the X-T2 with the fujinon Mk 18-55 & Mk 50-135 T2.9 Cine-Style lens kit X -Mount do a video on the lenses please and thx again.
Ok so let me get this off my chest. I used to shoot with Fuji (xt2/xpro2) and then I thought going full frame would be the next step up so I sold off the Fuji and got into Sony with A7III. Now that Ive used the Sony for over 1 year (using 85mm 1.8, sony 35mm 1.8, zeiss 55mm 1.8 and zeiss 50mm 1.4) I can say that a huge majority of my favorite pictures all came from the Fuji. Their lenses have amazing rendering for portraits and even landscapes. Some things just can’t be measured on charts but I can see it clearly when I look at the pictures. Needless to say I am still keeping my Sony but have sold off several lenses and I have purchased another Fuji body. I’ll slowly build up the lens collection again. Moral of the story is that bokeh isn’t the end all be all and neither is full frame. This lesson cost me a pretty penny but at least I have peace of mind now.
Just a quick reminder. Full Frame is not more cinematic, it's the very opposite. Full Frame is the essence of "photographic". Cinema has been mostly S35/APSC for.... decades and decades... It's only been like a year since all cinema camera manufacturers came up with VistaVision/FF cinema cameras. The "cinematic" point, used all over youtube is invalid, did anyone ever feel like Arriflex's, Panaflex's, or Alexas were not cinematic enough versus a 5D ? Come on internet !
f/4 or f/5.6 was also the classic cinematic aperture for years. Glass just wasn't that fast, especially the anamorphic lenses used in most classic movies. Sometimes I have to use the Canon 24-70 f/4 L-Series at work and the shots wide open have a great look. Especially if the lighting is right. Good comment tho!
pixelatorNYC You’re absolutely right about that, that’s actually the number 2 point that annoys me in the « get cinematic shots » videos all over TH-cam. « Get wide aperture lenses for super shallow depth of field » argh... try pulling focus on moving subjects at 1.4 on full frame... they often forget that movies actually move... and you have to track that focus :D Out of focus is the new « cinematic » ;)
Re: Out of focus is the new cinematic! Of course it is, because most of these shooters have never shot narrative, so they have no idea how annoying it is when a character goes out of focus. Maybe an insert shot can have a super shallow depth of field. But there are ways to achieve that look on S35 sensors. But lets not forget that ambient lighting is the new cinematic look too. So we have, available lighting, with out of focus shots, tons of slow motion, and still teal/orange grading. Thanks Matti Haapoja!
I think the gh5 footage looks more filmic than what I've seen out of the XT3, but maybe because most youtubers are uploading at 30fps? What are your thoughts about the gh5 vs xt3 in this 'cinematic' debate you love so much?
Ryan Sulak hey... both are capable cameras. But i think the Gh5 has the potential to be more “cinematic” based on once you out grow the gh5 you can move into a true cinema camera with the Eva1or a Varicam and still have similar color science. So in that way the Gh5 is the baby brother of a real cinema cameras and a better investment in the long run. the Gh5 also has 4:3 Anamorphic mode which is the bread and butter of narrative cinema. Enjoy
I think this is not for vloggers without ibis nor flip out screen. The 4K10bit and 4k60p doesnt mean a lot for vloggers. However it is very good for more generic videogprahers.
Take a look at the X-Pro2...oh my gosh, i'm in love. But I ordered the X-T3,too! Fujifilm is a hidden champion in my opinion. chatchin' the photo enthusiasts with the aps-c line and the pros with the medium format GFX. Skipping FF is a so damn wise move!
The X-T3 is the sleeper camera of the year so far in my book. I just can't wait for Fuji to release the X-H2! That camera should be a beast for video given the specs of the X-T3.
Zulyar Turganov yep I agree. Hopefully the battery will be bigger on the X-H2 but from what I've heard, the X-T3 battery isn't bad, but it isn't great.
why didn't the X-H1 get the new processor of the XT3....because then there would be no reason to buy the XT3...marketing bullcrap...was a easy discussion for me meaning .... IBIS more moving parts to go wrong in time...XT3 winner for me and I like working with gimbals, I like the spacial feel of movement...art in motion
the fuji xt3 is beyond amazing. Everything people loved about the xt2 but with way better/faster af and eye af and new video features. The xh2 when announced will be perfect if it includes all the video stuff of the xt3 with the ibis of the xh1.
I just finished watching Peter’s video on why he has limitations with the EOS R and here’s Matti saying “Hey guys I can do everything with this camera!” LOL WOW - Great footage too. 😁👏🏻
@@mattih Dude, I just don't understand why they cropped the 4k again. That sensor can do 12 bit if it wanted to! Also, 120 at 720p only. So, it's kind of lame to me why they keep cutting corners now :( Imagine 4k, with 120 at 1080p with that dual pixel af that isn't $6,000 :D
I own an X-T2 and it is a superb camera for photography and an already pretty decent tool for video, even with some limits, I'm definitely going to order an X-T3! A big advantage of Fujifilm is that they continuously release firmware upgrade also for older camera, adding features like 120p on my older x-t2! No other manufacturers do that! Quick note although the fujinon 16-55mmf2.8 is a fantastic lens it doesn't have OIS so for video the "kit" lens 18-55mmf2.8-4 would have been a better choice 👍🏼 Oh forgot to mention that the future X-H2 (theFujifilm camera dedicated to videography) will be a monster with this feature and IBIS! Love your video Matti! 👌🏼🤗
Agreed, except the X-H line isn't dedicated to videography at all. On the contrary, it does not sacrifice any photo feature that the X-T line would have, it actually pushes photo even further (in the X-H1 you get better shutter release, shutter mech, etc.) X-H is simply the higher end line of the X series cameras, before you move to medium format.
Caleb Owens Difficult to say, I haven't heard rumors yet about it. Considering that the X-H1 still a pretty new model I would guess the next one could come out for the end of 2019 at photokina.
HOLY MOLY !! Dude that vlog test you did... the colours looked incredible on that! So cinematic and natural. I really have to consider this camera after seeing that !
The dynamic range on Fujis recent offerings are insanely good as well. My XT2 runs laps around any full-frame I've tested recently. Between that and the colors, Fuji really knows what they are doing.
So I'm torn by the same dilemma: either A7III or X-T3. In general Fuji is significantly cheaper not only by itself, but lenses as well come much cheaper. I'm particularly focused on wedding filming.
Dude this should be your new camera. Your a73 doesn't come close to looking this good. The colors are great and the dynamic range is also very good. Fuji has great colors though.
Mandeep Kalsi I 100% agree with you but I think you can really tell a difference when matti uses his sony vs the cannon and especially this Fuji. So far for VLOGs this fuji looks the best just in my personal opinion. Would be so nice if there was IBIS for that run and gun vlog situation but sadly it doesnt.
John Harvey He really has something messed up in his settings for the sony, I have the a7iii and this not at all an accurate representation. He's had bad footage from his a7iii since the first time he reviewed it, other youtubers and myself have absolutely no complains with the sony and it works waaaay better than Matti's
@@Pratagraph yeah I actually agree with you on this. There are a lot of Sony users out there that are very use to grading Sony footage and have it down to a science.
@@richardvalenti9811 same doubt here, I had one Sony UHS-II card failed when I was shooting in Poland. I was so glad my Transcend SD card was recording simultaneously.
One in each card? So how does Dual Card slot help you in case of a Failure? You lose all Photos or all videos... Dual Card slots should be used only for redundancy.. Raw+Video to both Cards.
A vlogger probably doesn't need nor care about dual card slots but a filmmaker who's working the corporate circuit, it can be extremely helpful. I was recently interviewing a quantum physicist for a client and she was on a roll about quantum computing and what not. Card 1 ran out of space on my GH5, it auto switched to card 2 and the interview continued without stopping. Also shooting redundantly cand be really helpful. Plus, what's wrong with having dual card slots, haha it doesn't exactly slow anyone down.
Hey Matti! I really noticed your style in vlogging is getting so much better! You kept me right to the end! Amazing review on the camera. I was going to buy 1DX or A73, but for $1500 I'm going to buy this camera off your link. Keep it up!
Just my 2 cents. Wait for sony a7000 (or 6700) before buy the xt 3, compare them and then decide. Sony should announce it in October. IBIS is not a bad thing vor video, personally I think is more important than 10 bit, but it really depends on your needs and work flow in editing.
DonSalieri4 IBIS is great. but i think some people would just prefer 10 bit and just get a gimbal if they want stable footage. Also, i think it's the dials and "feels" of this camera (or fuji, in general) that separates it from other brands.
Yes, like I said it depends on your needs and also knowledge. When you use 10 bit log you have also know how to colour it and also how to shoot it :) For example... for vlogging most of the people even with sony use cine4 instead of slog, becouse it's easier when your shooting ans also for the editing. For vlogging 10 bit don't make so much difference. For videomakers instead the more dynamic range and flexibility in post can be extreamily important. IBIS anyway is very usefull imho. I have a gimbal for my a6300 but I can't shoot handheld becouse it has no IBIS and a gimbal is not the most easy thing to carry around. With the gh5 you can do it. About the dials and feels I think is only personal taste
Cons: IBIS, battery life, flippy screen. XT4 fixes all of these. The only other things I wish they would improve are the ability to shoot a4K 10bit 422 internally, slightly improve the AF and maybe remove the 4k 60p crop. I do understand they decided to stick to APSC and that’s OK, but maybe they could try to experiment with just slightly bigger sensors, like for example a 1.4 or 1.3 crop factor. That would make them much closer to a full frame and I guess most lenses could cover a slightly bigger sensor. If I’m not mistaken Canon did once unpon a time produce a 1.3 crop sensor for a very fast DSLR.
Saw this camera in the store just today and sat with it for a while. Was so excited to have found something besides Canon or Sony that did everything that I wanted it to do! Then a few hours later I saw you had reviewed it! And as long as it is Matti approved then it’s a go!💙👍
8:37 I've heard a lot about the Sony colors but until now I never had that good of a direct coparison shot. This really made me go: "Ooooh!". It'd be really nice to see a comparison of of Canon, Fuji, Sony (old), and Sony (new) colors - introduced with the A6100, A6400, A6600.
I'm primarily a stills shooter but I have a background in filmmaking and have wanted to get back into it since digital caught up with celluloid for the consumer market. This camera seems like an insane value proposition. The retro stylings, beautiful filmic color profiles & sheer versatility have me ready to plop down money on this body plus some of the Fujinon primes. I thought I wanted to graduate to full frame, but this camera really shows why APS-C is a great choice for hobbyists. The IQ on display in this form factor is unbeatable. Thanks for putting this together to help me evaluate my options!
Im encouraging everyone in the comment section to purchase Matti courses. its really great.i bought a camera last month and started practicing how to shoot photos and videos. for a person with no camera and editing experience, can't tell you how much I've learned from his courses.. its really with it. go and get it fam!!
Fujifilm is the camera of my childhood. My dad was an amateur photographer from the 70's to the 90's and he shot with an old Fujifilm and I LOVE how it still looks the same today! Makes me miss him :')
Hi Matti! I’m fuji owner since last year. I sold all my Canon stuff which I loved, but the weight and size of the Fujifilm cameras simply won. I don’t regret it, that switch had made me a little better photographer because now i shoot more thanks to the size and portability. Yes, sometimes I miss full frame adventages but I can deal with it. My back is now thankful. So glad you’ve tried it out! Love your videos, keep going, best of luck! :)
Hey Matti! I've been using the Fuji System quite a while now and started with the Fuji XT-10 and upgraded a year ago to the XT-2. There is one thing that I've learned from you and Peter and that's QUALITY!! Now the XT-2 is not yet the perfect Camera to VLOG but I was very very convinced about the Colorscience and the quality that came out of the Camera even the Autofocus was already working well on the the XT-2 which I am using to Vlog. And seeing you doing a Review about the XT-3 is a blessing and much more that you got surprised by what it was capable of. Thank you so much for all of your work that you have done here on TH-cam you truly have been an inspiration to me. Best regards from Germany Mike
There's one thing that you missed. Few months ago, Fuji released a firmware update for the 2 year-old XT2 that includes almost everything in the XH1. They don't come up with a different camera with different features like Sony, they just gave it to you through software updates
I was shooting all my vlogs on a fuji x-t10 and im super disapointed of the bad filming quality. Neverthless i bought a handful of lenses for it and now im super pumped about this one. Seems to bring that pro level in the same price range 😍
It has come a long way, for sure. I remember the first generation X series was considered strictly a still photography camera; they just did the bare minimum for video. X-T2 was exponentially better, but not necessarily the choice for pros with its limitations and requirement of an extended grip. The X-T3 makes another exponential jump, and now it's one of the front runners in the category. Incredible seeing their commitment to these cameras and not holding back on progressing them.
All my new videos are shot on the XT3. It's the perfect studio cam. Not having a flipout screen is not important as I am using an external Monitor anyways.
In some cases it's 35mm APS-C sensor can be equivalent to full frame sensor, as an example I'm using a F0.95 / T0.95 35mm lens, which would be a 50mm F1.4 FF equiv, yet much cheaper and lighter setup.
This camera can be ultra close to full frame or even match it, with the proper lenses. I shoot at F0.95 (T0.95 too) thus F1.4 equivalent in full frame. There are some great lenses available, check it out. Plus don't forget how much cheaper and lighter the lenses are.
manna4all i think the only f.95 lens for fuji right now is the mitakon 35mm. Haven’t used it myself but it seems well received. Also note that it is manual focus only which may not be suitable for everyone. I have seen some photographers in my area use it for portraits and they look great.
No IBIS though... So it's videos capabilities were tuned up to 110%, but no IBIS is a real killer... I guess if you're serious about it you've got it on a stabilizer of some sort anyway
Get the X-H1 by Fuji if you want IBIS. It does 4:2:2 external (arguably better than 10bit 4:2:0 like the X-T3 does). It's $150 more expensive, slower AF, burst photos and no 4K60 10bit internal, aside from that it's quite good or better (great ergonomics, IBIS, improved shutter mech and leaf spring, etc)
1901Steini IBIS doesn’t cause problems with gimbals. It helps. I leave IBIS on all the time on my gimbal and it’s never a problem. Brandon Li also leaves ibis on and I love his smooth shots. That’s such a myth.
hmm seems odd. There are some videos about the gh5 having problems on gimbals with ibis. but it might not be that big of a deal actually. I still think that by using a solid gimbal, you should be good to go without any software or hardware stabilisation in-camera
Hi Matti, can you do a video about the advantage of upgrading from a DSLR like camera to a cine camera? I am considering upgrading my GH5 to the Canon C200, but still not sure if this is the right move for me. I know you have a C200, so please list some reasons why people should upgrade or not upgrade to a cine camera(or when should I go one step higher to the cine camera). Mega thanks!
I would say RAW, built in NDs, and canon amazing af are reasons to upgrade. (also bigger camera sometimes gets you more respect on sets wish that wasn't the case). on the flip side a cinema camera is heavy. why do you want to upgrade, have you considered picking up the new blackmagic pocket 4k to compliment your gh5
Or maybe "upgrade" to gh5s? It has wider 4k, with speedbooster almost full frame equivalent. Also 10 bit internal. And you could use your old lenses still.
I am looking for a more shallow depth of field look and I don't really like the color science of Panasonic even I have been shooting Vlog for almost a year. I have a 5d mark iv so I know I like the canon color. Plus I already have some Canon lenses. I don't care about the RAW because you have to convert the footage, which is no better than buying a external recorder and shoot ProRes instead. It's good to know the dual pixel af is there but during the time with my GH5, I don't really miss it. And the last thing about GH5, water resistance is ok, but sometimes not reliable, had several time with camera shut down for no reason.
Hey Matt I had to upgrade my cheap Canon camera and switch the Fuji for (a) colour and (b) workflow. The colour is so good that I can vlog with the onboard profiles to save time. Plus my Fujifilm X-H1 has IBIS which allows me to use vintage glass and still have some stabilization. I really hope you guys end up loving these Fuji’s
Great first take on Fuji XT-3 and it sounds like a bargain for what it does. A real bargain. I am a senior photographer who has embraced the new gen of electronic offerings, be it cameras or otherwise, so I don't especially like the retro look. It reminds me of the Pentax Spotmatic camera I used in Vietnam, a great camera at the time but hardly relevant now. Perhaps, I might change my mind after using but not having a tilty flippy screen stops me from changing just because it's so inexpensive. I wish Fuji well, though with this new offering and so hope they do well with it. Great video, as always.
Hey, Mike. I'm also a senior photographer. I made the jump to Fujis a few years ago for the color. The retro styling is nice, but at the end of the day, it's a tool. I've found it to be a terrific one. I no longer have to tweak colors at all. The Fuji cameras have sped my workflow up immensely as a result. You can check out some of the work here (instagram.com/osbornphotography/) Side note: I hit your page and saw a bunch of baseball games with a lot of teams I recognize. I'm a Pace Academy grad, so it was a bit of a walk down memory lane. ;)
Thx for reaching out and the commentary. Yep, the photos you saw are mostly of my grandson's Dunwoody HS teams over the yrs and I always loved shooting his games. He is out of school now, so I haven't taken game pics of him in a few yrs. How I miss that. Glad to hear of your success with the Fuji line of cameras. I've certainly heard good things about them, especially lately. I'm very surprised they are able to sell the X-T3 at their current price point. Don't know how they do it. We retired a few yrs ago and moved from Atl to the N. Ga mtns. Very much like the slower pace and don't miss Big A town's traffic, even a little. Ha. Ha. Best to you.
I've been using my X-T2 for a couple of years now after switching from Nikon and it's the perfect camera system for me. I'm honestly a bit surprised it's taken people this long to notice these cameras. I prefer the dials as I don't need to go into a menu to change settings such as ISO, SS or aperture, which is important as I shoot both photo and video. When used with lenses with built-in stabilisation the handheld footage looks good! I can't see any reason why I would change camera systems anytime soon, excited to see what else is to come from Fuji.
Life is so hard right now. I was pretty set on grabbing a 6D mark II and ditching my Sony a6000. But I just finished watching Peter's video on the EOS-R and thought maybe I should grab that instead.... well as it turns out, I've had a fuji X-T1 for a few years now and that's the camera I end up walking out of the house with 9 times out of 10.... but I have no other Fuji glass. I have plenty of Canon glass that I use professionally; I don't shoot with my Fuji for paid gigs.... on top of all of this is that little thought I've had in the back of my head for a year now saying, "sell the Canon kit, go Fuji." This video helped make that voice a little louder.
Hey, not to influence you one way or the other, but you should know that even the second generation X-T2's sensor was a huge jump from the X-T1. So if you like the X-T1, you are going to love the X-T3. Other than that, the choice you have to make about which system because of your existing glass and what not...that's always a tougher one. Just try to be brutally honest with yourself about what you would actually make the most use of.
I’ve recently tested it and compared to Lumix GH5 and I’m blown away with the X-T3. AFC works pretty well, although I think it’s a little bit limited for video (only non-resizable one area and face/eye tracking). I don’t miss the lack of IBIS with stabilized lens and/or using a gimbal. But I don’t understand why Fuji has not already released a firmware update with internal recording 422 10bit (the sensor is capable and it is possible via HDMI). I love that it records DCI 4K at 60fps and 420 10bit 400 mbps internally (GH5, in example, downgrades to 420 8bit above 30fps), although it adds an extra cropping of 1.12x. In summary, I only miss that “forgotten” internal 422 10bit and a few options more like shutter metered in degrees (and not to have to change it every time fps also changes to preserve the 180º rule), AFC with tracking more than human faces and a couple more of functions that GH5 has. Very impressed with this camera.
Dual SD Cards are important for wedding photographers (or in general, event photographers where there’s no chance of reshoots) - in the off chance an SD card fails, it’s hard to tell the client “whoops, here’s a refund, sorry”
I would have loved to also hear about the photography capabilities. I know Matti is all about filming, but I guess for many people that's not totally unimportant.
From a photography standpoint It's similar to the xt2.. photos are epic and the topic is beaten up to death on youtube. Check out a TH-camr called xing liu
You mention in a lot of your videos you have problems editing 4k footage? I have a gtx 1070, an i7 3770k, and 32 gigs of ram in my computer which cost me less than a macbook pro to build and i have never had a problem with any 4k footage in resolve or premier pro. You may need to invest in a decent machine.
I think it's only an issue with H.265/HEVC codec at high bit rates (400Mb/s). Modern CPUs and GPUs have hardware decoders for almost all modern codecs (including 10-bit HEVC) so playback of these files shouldn't be a problem. If it's choppy than it's probably using CPU for decoding which is very intensive and I'm pretty sure that even your CPU would start choking. I guess Premiere Pro either has a bug on MacOS, or it doesn't use hardware decoding for 10-bit HEVC or there's no hardware support for 10-bit HEVC HW decoding on Matti's mahcine.
Moved from Canon 70D to the Fujifilm X-t3 and I find this camera absolutely amazing, still haven't figured out everything in it... it just has a ton of features. I must say you and only one other person are the only people who have gotten that amount of quality out of that camera as far as I've found on youtube and I look every other week. I bought it after seeing this video for Music Videos and it's a little unnecessary to say but going from the 70D to the XT3 is a HUGE!!! upgrade, especially since the XT3 was only 400$ more than the 70D when I bought it.
Matti, on the IBS comments, did you try shooting on an OIS lens to see how that performed vs the 16-55? Also, you mentioned that the base ISO was 640, but I think it's actually 100 or 160 -- was that for a particular setting?
ZodiacProd and actually, I thought I read somewhere that if you dig into the settings you can re-map the lowest ISO setting option below 160, I’ll see if I can find a link.
Z6 for me - I tried a Z7 a few weeks ago and really liked it - even the 24 - 70 kit lens impressed me. If I didn't like and trust Nikon so much I would probably go for the new Canon as all my output is 1080 and the new Canon has everything at that resolution for me.
I love my Fuji x-t3! The x-t2 reeled me in and the x-t3 is keeping me here! I'm with you on the FF look, but I've been grabbing my X-T3's the past week when out shooting instead of my Sonys. Good job Fuji! Thanks for the honest review dude!
Matti Haapoja bro come on! This camera spanks and puts the canon r to shame. At this point if you praise the canon eos r and you’re not getting paid, I don’t know what you and many “not paid by canon” youtubers are thinking and getting the balls to praise such a lazy ass camera if I ever saw one. Hold canon accountable.
thanks Matti for checking out fuji! I bought xt20 a year ago, only for insta and by accident I started recording video and sometimes surprisingly checks good, now I see that xt3 can be much more interesting and suitable for small my doc forms, thx!
I was waiting for this and pop goes the notification! .. I am actually becoming a fan of Fujifilm Cameras and planning to buy one for myself but not the X-T3 tho because it's too expensive. Thanks for this Matti =)
xpro have the same price point as the XT3 or even more expensive, is in B & H at $ 1700, I guess you mean the future XT30, that would be around 1100 but do not know when it will come, not even in rumors
Fuji I LOVE your flip SCREEN concept! They have in my opinion the best flip screen arrangement on the marked. Makes high/low photo a breeze compared to the Panny/Oly/Canon idea where you have to flip it all the way out before rotating etc which makes you miss the moment. 100% cudos to Fuji here. This vlogging-thingy is just for a few users compared to the large amount of photographers out there.
I sold my GH5s due to the horrific horizontal noise patterns when shooting log or slow motion for that matter. Getting my X-T3 next and I just can't wait.
I love how diverse you are in your channel in terms of cameras 😊 Please continue helping people by giving them ideas and reviews like this! Thank you Matti! I'm a BIG FAN! ❤️ I'm a Fuji user though, but not this, it's too expensive for me haha! I have Fuji XA3
I just got the XT3 and wow everything Matti just said! Looks, feels and functions amazing (for me)! Be sure to get the verticle grip with this camera for even more battery life and power.
Matti Haapoja thanks man!! I’m loving it in my bag riding shotgun with my Fuji XH1!! I’m new to being the actual photographer/videographer versus being 100% Production Management! Super excited to shoot my own creations!
I‘m watching all of your videos and now you’re reviewing my favorite camera brand. Love it! To put two things into perspective: Fujifilms ISO 200 is equal to ISO 100 on every other camera brand. So no shortcomings here. The other aspect is the datarate. Of course Canon is using a higher one but it’s the inefficient coded motion jpeg. It’s just wasting of bits. I love the evolution of Fuji and the will to bring firmware updates with major improvements to the camera. Best value for the money. Cheers and keep on with your great stuff!
We all know your and Peter's love for canon cameras. But its always great to see an honest review for other cameras which are lately doing amazing things with their technology and making Nikon and canon work even harder.
Thank you for the honest review. Looking to upgrade in the near future and this camera is really interesting. All those awesome specs for $1500.00, if anything that is going to make the other company's have to drop their prices. How was the battery life?
Ok. At this point, there has to be some reason we don't know about that prevents manufacturers from having a flip screen. Does someone hold the patent to it and it's super expensive to license it or something? Is it actually harder than it seems to do that engineering-wise? I'm just so confused why they keep gimping cameras with screens that you can't move around.
Glad to see that you're giving a Fujifilm camera review on your channel! I've owned the X-100T for photos and now own the X-H1 photo and video. I love their color science. You hit the nail on the head by characterizing Fujifilm's color as very natural. Images and video can be used straight of camera, if you're willing to let go of your post-production addiction (I'm speaking to myself here: self-proclaimed post-production addict). I totally agree with your take that all cameras should include a flip out back screen. As soon as Fujifilm integrates this, a lot more video shooters will be willing to get on board with their system. I would say the X-T3 would make an ideal travel camera for hybrid shooters who can live without a full frame sensor. Its a robust beast for its size.
You've brought up some excellent points about the new XT-3; both positive & negative. however, you're looking strictly at video rather than including still photography. The XT-3, while a great little video camera, is really aimed more at still shooters than videographers. If you're interested in FujiFilm for video, go with the X-H1. It has IBIS where the XT-3 doesn't. By using basically the same body as the XT-2, FujiFilm couldn't add the IBIS in to that body. As for APS-C v. Full Frame: you're correct when you say the benefits of full frame are an advantage. But FujiFilm already has full frame cameras in their medium format line. I don't think you'll ever see them go full frame in the "35mm" format cameras like you're seeing from Sony, Canon & Nikon. But then again, those three don't have medium format. I shoot Canon (5D MkIII), Sony (A6300) & FujiFilm cameras (XT-2 & X-Pro2) and each has a place in a toolkit. I love the full frame Canon quality. I love the versatility of Sony. I love the images from the FujiFilm. I just love photography!
but for an all around camera, i.e. brolls or some cinematic shots/videos + tons of photography, which would you prefer? so far I'm inclining towards fuji due to its color science plus its not as expensive, specifically for the xt3 (based on the comments) i could just compensate the crop sensor with a lens
I disagree with the X-H1 recommendation. The X-T3 is better suited for video than the X-H1 in literally every way except for IBIS. Get an X-T3 and use optically stabilized lenses, and/or a gimbal, and you're better off. And it's also still geared toward still shooters; you're right about that. It's just a better camera, and I love Fuji for not being afraid to cannibalize their own sales to keep pushing their envelope.
the XT3 has much better video capability than the X-H1, minus the IBIS which is no big deal, just more things to go wrong. When you are serious about shooting video you are using a tripod or some form of gimbal anyway...IBIS is for newbee's

This is why I love Fuji. Great all around cameras with fantastic color science. I have the XT-2 and X-H1, and have been considering this more and more lately. All in all, great work homie! Loved everything about this review.
Kool... thanks for the update, I'd be interested in thoughts on lens as my last experience in Fuji mirrorless lens adapters was not great and when you have an existing investment in (non-Fuji) lens that far out way the price of any camera body making a switch is really tough to get an additional couple of features (maybe great features) but still...
Thanks...was just about to ask sometime similar. Waiting on TH-cam. 1:26pm (EST) today (9/24/18) and still can only watch in 1080P (HD) on TH-cam. Guess it takes a few hours for the 4K to show available....
Thanks for putting the footage first! I can't tell you how frustrating it is to watch a talking-head review without seeing any of the footage they recorded until the end.
@@FlyByFrancis That's a good thing. A base ISO of 640 would mean that it would be harder to achieve slow shutter speeds when desired and it would be hard to use fast lenses wide open in bright light. It also means that the IQ you get at 640, while pretty impressive, doesn't represent the best the X-T3 has to offer.
Back in the old film days, pre digital, they used to say if you want more greens in your pictures to uses Fuji. I think Kodak was more blues. I am no pro by any means. Thanks for the review.
I'm SO glad you tried out a fuji!! I have the XT-20 and I LOVE it. Fuji colours are beautiful and the camera's are a joy to use because they feel like SLR's
I wish someone told me this when I was starting, but, having a camera that I LIKE to use was the best thing that ever happened for my photography. I actually downgraded my gear to a simple fuji kit using the XT1, the first iteration of this camera and because I loved the look and feel of the camera, I used it more and improved way faster. I would suggest going to a shop and handling a load of cameras and find the one that feels the best in your hand (like Harry Potter buying his wand XD). Have a great day!
I know this was a video review, but man you should have gone and shot some stills. That is where Fujifilm really shines, its such a fun camera to use, it brought so much life and energy to photography for me!
I'm glad you finally got to try a Fujifilm camera! I was looking forward hearing what you think of Fujis colors! Glad you liked it. The Fuji X-H1 has been my main camera for the past 6 month and probably for a while as I love the IBIS. A future X-H2 with the same sensor and processor of the X-T3 would be the ultimate camera! Keep up the good work Matti!
Great real world review!! I am thinking it would be an awesome companion for my Eos M50 l. It covers all the annoying things about the M50 and would be I think the perfect upgrade.
Thanks so much for this review. I've been using a Fuji Finepix HS 30 for 6 or 7 years now. I started out as a food blogger and I've had a food channel on TH-cam for a couple years now, but I've only recently been getting into photography recently, after discovering your & Peter's channels and I can see an upgrade in my future (and I really want to start doing some vlogging). Right now, I'm focusing on learning how to use the camera I have, but I've loved it so much that I've been really interested in this new X-T3 from Fuji. Thanks so much for the review!
The footage from this camera is utterly impressive. I cannot believe what I am seeing here. This is easily some of the best looking footage i've seen on your channel. I was considering getting an EOS R or A7iii but now i'm stuck. Especially considering the price of the Fuji...
Hey Matti, are there adapters that would let you use other lenses with it? Autofocus would probably be a concern with adapters too.
What do you mean with full frame look? FF DOF should be possible with other lenses or adapters.
What do you think about the 18-55mm kit lens?
« Get wide aperture lenses for super shallow depth of field » argh... try pulling focus on moving subjects at 1.4 on full frame... they often forget that movies actually move... and you have to track that focus :D
Out of focus is the new « cinematic » ;)
Yeah basically anyone who’s not trying to point and shoot 😂😂
That's probably the most physically good looking camera I've ever seen!
Haha I agree
Take a look at the X-Pro2...oh my gosh, i'm in love. But I ordered the X-T3,too! Fujifilm is a hidden champion in my opinion. chatchin' the photo enthusiasts with the aps-c line and the pros with the medium format GFX. Skipping FF is a so damn wise move!
take a look to Olympus Pen-F. I know its not for video (no log, etc.) but in my opinion is the king of the look.
Nikon F3 is still the most beautiful camera I've ever seen. My X100F ain't bad though, ahaha.
It really is
The X-T3 is the sleeper camera of the year so far in my book. I just can't wait for Fuji to release the X-H2! That camera should be a beast for video given the specs of the X-T3.
I agree definitely a strong underdog
Troy Jordan was hoping that they will use bigger battery on X-T3, but.... hope X-H2 will have bigger one
I think no one cares about dual card slots, until they do. You know? 😁
Haha yep
I just finished watching Peter’s video on why he has limitations with the EOS R and here’s Matti saying “Hey guys I can do everything with this camera!” LOL WOW - Great footage too. 😁👏🏻
CANON, ARE YOU LISTENING?!
Haha 😂 can’t wait to try to eos r
@@mattih Dude, I just don't understand why they cropped the 4k again. That sensor can do 12 bit if it wanted to! Also, 120 at 720p only. So, it's kind of lame to me why they keep cutting corners now :( Imagine 4k, with 120 at 1080p with that dual pixel af that isn't $6,000 :D
@matti pls pls pls can you check the horizontal cyan and magenta stripes at higher iso with the eos r?
Saw a review of the 2, Canon and Fuji comparison. Fuji wins in video autofocus. Check it out from DPReview.
They are not like
I own an X-T2 and it is a superb camera for photography and an already pretty decent tool for video, even with some limits, I'm definitely going to order an X-T3!
A big advantage of Fujifilm is that they continuously release firmware upgrade also for older camera, adding features like 120p on my older x-t2! No other manufacturers do that!
Quick note although the fujinon 16-55mmf2.8 is a fantastic lens it doesn't have OIS so for video the "kit" lens 18-55mmf2.8-4 would have been a better choice 👍🏼
Oh forgot to mention that the future X-H2 (theFujifilm camera dedicated to videography) will be a monster with this feature and IBIS!
Love your video Matti! 👌🏼🤗
Thanks for watching man and the comment! 🙌🏻
Kaizen updates :)
When is the release of the X-H2? And how much? Never really heard a lot about Fujifilm so this is interesting for me
Caleb Owens Difficult to say, I haven't heard rumors yet about it.
This is just amazing, I'm actually hesitating between the A7III and the X-T3, for the price the X-T3 is better so far and lenses are pretty good.
Super tough call!
Fujinon lenses are some of the best in the business
Isaac Shapiro yes for sure ! I'm waiting for Panasonic tomorrow for the announcement
So I'm torn by the same dilemma: either A7III or X-T3. In general Fuji is significantly cheaper not only by itself, but lenses as well come much cheaper. I'm particularly focused on wedding filming.
Skiiys Studio are you down to pay $900 for the 16mm, or 10-24mm?
Do you have a gimbal?
If yes: Fuji.
Bought the xt3 last month and haven't looked back. Shoutout Fuji
Dude this should be your new camera. Your a73 doesn't come close to looking this good. The colors are great and the dynamic range is also very good. Fuji has great colors though.
lol its all about the person behind the camera....their settings...camera movements....colour grading.... all these cameras are sufficient
I personally use a Canon 6D with a particular colour profile and a particular LUT and I get a better images than most people with Sony cameras.
That auto focus for the Fuji Wow. It's instant
I like dual card slots because I shot photography and videography so it’s pretty cool to have my photos on one and videos on the other 😎
Yea that’s true! I’d still rather just have it all on one card tho 😊
Yes! I shoot the same way.
Matti Haapoja have you never had a card fail on you?
Patrik Kondic do you have problems related to sharpness using Photoshop/lightroom?
DonSalieri4 IBIS is great. but i think some people would just prefer 10 bit and just get a gimbal if they want stable footage.
Also, i think it's the dials and "feels" of this camera (or fuji, in general) that separates it from other brands.
Patrik Kondic I think that I saw too much reviews, but I don't know if I should buy sony ff
Sold my canon 5d mIII long time ago and switched for fuji - best decision of my life.
Nice!
Also for IBIS, you probably should look into X-H1, it's the one made for video, so you might like it even more.
Is the xt 3 good for wildlife portrait landscape and astrophotography, if yes im not taking the a7 3
Saw this camera in the store just today and sat with it for a while. Was so excited to have found something besides Canon or Sony that did everything that I wanted it to do! Then a few hours later I saw you had reviewed it! And as long as it is Matti approved then it’s a go!💙👍
Hi Chandra!! I just ordered this camera! Will be putting it up against my a7iii. Should be fun.
Your B-Roll is always on point.🔥 I like watching Gear that i can't afford lol but I hope I can upgrade soon for my B-Roll haha
Im encouraging everyone in the comment section to purchase Matti courses. its really great.i bought a camera last month and started practicing how to shoot photos and videos. for a person with no camera and editing experience, can't tell you how much I've learned from his courses.. its really with it. go and get it fam!!
The xh1 has ibis!! I LOVE my Fuji!! So glad I chose it over the Sony. Amazing little cameras they are ✨
Fujifilm is the camera of my childhood. My dad was an amateur photographer from the 70's to the 90's and he shot with an old Fujifilm and I LOVE how it still looks the same today! Makes me miss him :')
The image quality of that INTRO look so goooooood! Jeezz! Great review man!
love my X-T3, and honestly the AF is better than canon
Best regards from Germany
Mike
Thanks, Mati. I have the X-T2 I’m glad u did this video I’be patiently waiting for you to do this video. awesome just wow thank you so much.
Awesome!
Yea this is probably a big step up
yeah, those first generation x-ts were terrible at video
Osborn Photography terrible is the right word xD
It has come a long way, for sure. I remember the first generation X series was considered strictly a still photography camera; they just did the bare minimum for video. X-T2 was exponentially better, but not necessarily the choice for pros with its limitations and requirement of an extended grip. The X-T3 makes another exponential jump, and now it's one of the front runners in the category.
Incredible seeing their commitment to these cameras and not holding back on progressing them.
All my new videos are shot on the XT3. It's the perfect studio cam. Not having a flipout screen is not important as I am using an external Monitor anyways.
A7iii for full frame = xt3 for crop. Great job fuji 👏
Yea both super strong contenders
In some cases it's 35mm APS-C sensor can be equivalent to full frame sensor, as an example I'm using a F0.95 / T0.95 35mm lens, which would be a 50mm F1.4 FF equiv, yet much cheaper and lighter setup.
mitakon 35mm f0.95 is actually pretty cheap for the specs
Why would you get both? Fuji doesn't have a"full frame". Their lenses for x only cover this frame.
The skin tones and dynamic range look on point! I do wish it was full frame, though, and a proper flip screen would be amazing.
I fully agreeee
This camera can be ultra close to full frame or even match it, with the proper lenses. I shoot at F0.95 (T0.95 too) thus F1.4 equivalent in full frame. There are some great lenses available, check it out. Plus don't forget how much cheaper and lighter the lenses are.
Which lens specifically?
manna4all i think the only f.95 lens for fuji right now is the mitakon 35mm. Haven’t used it myself but it seems well received. Also note that it is manual focus only which may not be suitable for everyone. I have seen some photographers in my area use it for portraits and they look great.
@@buddyWalrus nice! Thank you. I'll look it up.
No IBIS though... So it's videos capabilities were tuned up to 110%, but no IBIS is a real killer... I guess if you're serious about it you've got it on a stabilizer of some sort anyway
I know :(
yep. that is also true for the bmpcc4k. I am really glad that it has no ibis, because ibis can cause massive problems with gimbals.
I 100% love the fujifilm! I have the X-T2 because it’s cheaper now after the X-T3 came out! For $1500 I got the camera and the 23mm lends!
Haoyü Wang this is an excellent question Matti should answer 🙏🏼
I would say RAW, built in NDs, and canon amazing af are reasons to upgrade. (also bigger camera sometimes gets you more respect on sets wish that wasn't the case). on the flip side a cinema camera is heavy. why do you want to upgrade, have you considered picking up the new blackmagic pocket 4k to compliment your gh5
Or maybe "upgrade" to gh5s? It has wider 4k, with speedbooster almost full frame equivalent. Also 10 bit internal. And you could use your old lenses still.
@@JyrkiS that isnt worth the Upgrade if you dont need lowlight... the ibis is missing which is key
Watching the end I think this might be the new MH go to camera 🤣
Yea definitely a great price
Fuji glass though, super sharp. 33mm F1 in ~2020 is something to look out for if you like DOF.
For vlogging the 10-24 with optical image stabilization would be also a nice try.
Totally get that! I’m just a film guy and I know a lot of other people will cover photography 😊
Fair enough, that is true! Keep up the great work and greetings from Germany! 👍🏼
From a photography standpoint It's similar to the xt2.. photos are epic and the topic is beaten up to death on youtube. Check out a TH-camr called xing liu
I think you missed mentioning out the connectivity options!
The biggest thing I notice in quality for vlogs is how blown out the highlights are and in this the dynamic range is so much better
I'm digging the color.
Me too! It was super good most of the time but then once in a while it just went super bad. Not sure exactly what’s going on
Moved from Canon 70D to the Fujifilm X-t3 and I find this camera absolutely amazing, still haven't figured out everything in it... it just has a ton of features.
Oh my god such an insane camera!!😍💓You're the best Matti!!
Haha thanks for watching man! And yea great camera
Matti, on the IBS comments, did you try shooting on an OIS lens to see how that performed vs the 16-55? Also, you mentioned that the base ISO was 640, but I think it's actually 100 or 160 -- was that for a particular setting?
EXACTLY, he has been spouting such false information lately. BASE ISO is 160
ZodiacProd and actually, I thought I read somewhere that if you dig into the settings you can re-map the lowest ISO setting option below 160, I’ll see if I can find a link.
ZodiacProd not false information at all.. the base iso for F-LOG is 640
This looks amazing!! You're such a good colour grader.
What lenses were used with the sony, fuji and 1dx2?
I cannot believe the 12,800 iso looked as good as it did
Z6 for me - I tried a Z7 a few weeks ago and really liked it - even the 24 - 70 kit lens impressed me. If I didn't like and trust Nikon so much I would probably go for the new Canon as all my output is 1080 and the new Canon has everything at that resolution for me.
400 Mbit/s = 50 MB/s
That's 3 GB for 1 minute. That's 180 GB for 1 hour.
Are the files actually that big or are these numbers not reached in reality?
More or less, they usually are a bit lower tho, because vannera manufacturers like to take the pessimistic measurements for stuff like this.
I love my Fuji x-t3! The x-t2 reeled me in and the x-t3 is keeping me here! I'm with you on the FF look, but I've been grabbing my X-T3's the past week when out shooting
instead of my Sonys. Good job Fuji! Thanks for the honest review dude!
Way better than the canon eos r !
I dunno about that I haven’t tried it yet!
Im glad to see you are opened on trying other camera brands Matti, unlike your bff Peter who only sticks to Canon..😆
no flip screen HRRRNGGG
Matti Haapoja bro come on! This camera spanks and puts the canon r to shame. At this point if you praise the canon eos r and you’re not getting paid, I don’t know what you and many “not paid by canon” youtubers are thinking and getting the balls to praise such a lazy ass camera if I ever saw one. Hold canon accountable.
@@Ben-fq1lj The lenses and lens adapter stuff seems to be great though.
thanks Matti for checking out fuji!
Thanks for watching!
expect the xpro-3 to be announced soon, many of the same features but a lot cheaper.
xpro have the same price point as the XT3 or even more expensive, is in B & H at $ 1700, I guess you mean the future XT30, that would be around 1100 but do not know when it will come, not even in rumors
Yes - the XT30 will be around $1,100. I wouldn't be surprised to see an XH2 released in the spring with all of the same features plus IBIS.
Fuji XT30 is coming out soon for $899 ish and the same sort if features
Fuji I LOVE your flip SCREEN concept! They have in my opinion the best flip screen arrangement on the marked. Makes high/low photo a breeze compared to the Panny/Oly/Canon idea where you have to flip it all the way out before rotating etc which makes you miss the moment. 100% cudos to Fuji here. This vlogging-thingy is just for a few users compared to the large amount of photographers out there.
Never thought about this camera, was looking at the gh5s but now really think this might be the one!
I sold my GH5s due to the horrific horizontal noise patterns when shooting log or slow motion for that matter. Getting my X-T3 next and I just can't wait.
CJ Oppies and how is the xt 3 compared to the gh5 ?
Can u use the mc 11 adapter and the sonys apsc glass like the sigma 16mm?
Flipout screen good for video. Tilty screen is good for photographers.
I love how diverse you are in your channel in terms of cameras 😊 Please continue helping people by giving them ideas and reviews like this! Thank you Matti! I'm a BIG FAN! ❤️
I'm a Fuji user though, but not this, it's too expensive for me haha! I have Fuji XA3
I’m trying them alllll 😊
I just got the XT3 and wow everything Matti just said! Looks, feels and functions amazing (for me)! Be sure to get the verticle grip with this camera for even more battery life and power.
So good! Enjoy man 🙌🏻
Matti Haapoja thanks man!!
This or the bmpcc 4k is the real question!
I would wait a while on the BMPC. Their cameras always have issues for early adopters.
The X-T3 would be more versatile, with shallower DOF and an equally wide array of native and third party lenses.
Get the BMPCC 4k. I've had mine for a few weeks with zero issues. 😉
the xt3 is versatile while the bmpcc is more for just filmmaking.
It was pretty good actually not bad at all. No issues there
Just bought the x-t3 and now I think I want the onewheel too. I hate this amazing video :'(
Glad to see that you're giving a Fujifilm camera review on your channel!
“Base ISO is 640” What?? It says ISO 160 on the wheel on top of the camera!
For LOG it is base of 640. If you aren't shooting in LOG it goes down to I believe 70
during the vlog test. the back lit shot was bang on the AF, and DR was mind blowing, wow... just wow
I just love photography!
but for an all around camera, i.e. brolls or some cinematic shots/videos + tons of photography, which would you prefer? so far I'm inclining towards fuji due to its color science plus its not as expensive, specifically for the xt3 (based on the comments) i could just compensate the crop sensor with a lens
...less Rolling Shutter is more important than IBIS :)
I mean he is a cinematographer before a photographer.
No 4K stream available? Only uploaded in 1080p?
Nope it’s still coming :( slow processing from youtube
Kool... thanks for the update, I'd be interested in thoughts on lens as my last experience in Fuji mirrorless lens adapters was not great and when you have an existing investment in (non-Fuji) lens that far out way the price of any camera body making a switch is really tough to get an additional couple of features (maybe great features) but still...
Thanks...was just about to ask sometime similar. Waiting on TH-cam. 1:26pm (EST) today (9/24/18) and still can only watch in 1080P (HD) on TH-cam. Guess it takes a few hours for the 4K to show available....
I want to see every pore in your face! :)
Thanks for putting the footage first! I can't tell you how frustrating it is to watch a talking-head review without seeing any of the footage they recorded until the end.
Damn Fujifilm I have been using the sony a7riii with smc pentax glass (1977-1984) but this fuji looks like a fantastic B camera for my work
Yea for a b camera this would be a great option
Matti Haapoja haha! So diplomatic Matti.
Matti you are getting so much better in vlogging !!
Ok I think you have sold me. Might be time for a new camera!
Test it first!
haha ok ok! Always a good idea.
Loving your style! Getting better and better with every vlog! Excited to see more content
I don’t see that anyone else has mentioned this so I will: the base ISO is 160, not 640.
is that good or bad?
@@FlyByFrancis That's a good thing. A base ISO of 640 would mean that it would be harder to achieve slow shutter speeds when desired and it would be hard to use fast lenses wide open in bright light. It also means that the IQ you get at 640, while pretty impressive, doesn't represent the best the X-T3 has to offer.
Timothy Linn yes for normal video mode it is 160.... but for F-log its 640
Back in the old film days, pre digital, they used to say if you want more greens in your pictures to uses Fuji. I think Kodak was more blues. I am no pro by any means. Thanks for the review.
I thought I forgot to turn of the radio upstairs, but just the video... Okey
:DDDDD I also noticed it in the middle of the video :D
I'm SO glad you tried out a fuji!! I have the XT-20 and I LOVE it. Fuji colours are beautiful and the camera's are a joy to use because they feel like SLR's
The design is sick!!
I fully agreee!
Same design since 2014 ;) I shoot xt2 and the ergos are incredible, a camera you want in your hand.
@@kitbentley3809 sounds great! I'm just starting so I do not own my own camera yet.
@@kitbentley3809 yeah thx man! Your advice is much appreciated 💪🏼
I know this was a video review, but man you should have gone and shot some stills. That is where Fujifilm really shines, its such a fun camera to use, it brought so much life and energy to photography for me!
I just love Fuji...
First experiences are good so far for me 😊
I'm glad you finally got to try a Fujifilm camera!
Yea definitely!
Hey Matti! What camera do you prefer for the 120 fps? 1dxii or X-T3?
1dx2 but it is super nice have log on the xt3
The footage from this camera is utterly impressive. I cannot believe what I am seeing here. This is easily some of the best looking footage i've seen on your channel. I was considering getting an EOS R or A7iii but now i'm stuck. Especially considering the price of the Fuji...
