Hi folks. I just updated my BMPCC6K to the new camera update 7.9 using the method shown in this video so I can confirm this method is fully tested and works for the latest firmware (written 12-07-2022)
Hi there, We have BMPCC4k RAW trouble. I bought my BMPCC4K with firmware 6.9.1 and edit in Resolve 15 studio / OSX 10.11 because my old Mac Pros 4,1 and 5,1 don't really run higher versions. BM RAW recorded on SD cards was running fine in Resolve 15. Resolve 14 did not recognise any BM RAW files of BMPCC firmware 6.9.1 I then bought a Samsung T7 usb-c drive to be able to record 3:1 bitrates in raw in the BMPCC4K. In order for BMPCC4K to properly recognize and record on the Samsung T7 drive I had to upgrade the camera firmware to 7.3. Below that 7.3 firmwareversion the T7 would only record low resolutions like a cheap SD card. Now Resolve 15 does not see my raw files anymore although I can play them on the camera. What exactly is going on here and how can I solve the problem? Does the BMPCC4K produce different incompatible BM RAW files with different firmware versions?! On the BM website I could not find anything about any compatibility issues. What would be the ideal software version setup with my Mac Pros 4.1 /5.1 running various OSX systems 8.5 to 10.11? I have a lot of legacy software that I still use, e.g. FCP 7 etc. Concerning BMPCC4K and resolves different versions, what is working with what? Is there a chart or a table outlining that? Possibly I could run OSX 10.12 but even zhat runs only Resolve 16. BMPCC4K firmware 7.3 BM-RAW files are also not recognized there. I am producing high end table top food advertising at the very moment so highest possible image quality is of the essence. Greetings from Berlin Germany

Blackmagic is like the Apple of the camera world. They make it pretty simple to update. Quick too. We have two 6K Pros. We didn't really experience any of the blue tint on the monitors like other people were experiencing but the ability to change the monitor now is awesome. Really really love the histograms now too. Makes it so much easy to see what you're doing. The auto focus was definitely an improvement too. Still have our fingers crossed for continuous auto focus, but we're take what we can get haha
The Apple of the camera word, I hope a U2 album doesn’t end up on my BMPCC 😂 Jokes aside yeah they’ve always made great software and UIs that make for a simple user experience, granted of course you haven’t fallen victim to a bug like speed booster users have with this update!

Thanks very much for the note in the description, I had everything ready downloaded and plugged in and then I saw it! I use my speedbooster a lot, I can't risk loosing its functionality and have a shoot tomorrow. Problem avoided, I will wait it out, but keen to try the Gen 5 colour science!
There's a fix for the viltrox problem, detatch just the lens from the viltrox with the camera on and put it back, do this a couple of times (Sometimes takes 5 tries) and the iris will apear on the screen and you will be able to control it normally

Whether or not to update camera FW is no longer an automatic choice. Thanks for the written heads-up on Viltrox/Metabones. As so often happens, it may be months before users of adapted lenses can install the latest BMPCC4K FW without causing lens-control problens. In fact, I'm still waiting on a combination of updates that lets me use the focus-by-touchscreen feature.
Glad you saw it and knew to hold off, lots of people didn’t! It’s strange, from what I’ve seen some people downgrade and that solves it but I just had a comment on a my community post saying that this individual downgraded and it’s still not working 🤷♂️ that makes zero sense to me. Definitely the right call to hold off till it’s solved!
@@FilmResolved - Still holding off on the latest camera FW update until I hear an 'all-clear.' I use EF lenses on a 4K camera with Viltrox adapters (speed booster and 1:1 and down-version FW 2.3 -- anything newer also loses IS control). This combo has worked okay through several camera updates (though touch-screen focusing never works). Obviously, losing iris control over my EF lenses is a show-stopper -- and worse -- this camera/adapter FW compatibility shuffle will never end. As painful as it sounds, I'm thinking about demoting the 4K to my old FD lenses (adapters with opto/mechanical, no electronic, and all manual lenses with actual aperture rings!) and moving my EF lenses to an EF-native 6K camera (no adapters needed). Plainly, this would be a very, very expensive step -- but at least no more worries over EF lens compatibility.
@Alex Ferris I wound up switching to Commlite -- adapter and speedbooster. They both have no FW issues with my Pocket 4K (everything works with all of my EF lenses including auto focus) ... In fact, the Commlites are running FW ver 1.0 and have never needed a FW update since the day they were first released. The same as Viltrox and Metabones, fullframe lenses fit okay with the Commlite speedboster, but most APS-C lenses interfere with the booster lens element (my 17-50 mm f/2.8 APS-C Sigma fits okay, but none of my Canon APS-Cs).
My BMPCC 6K pro DOES NOT work with my DJI ronin RS2 anymore ... Before the firmware update 7.3 I could control focus on my RS2 and start recording and now I cannot do anything because there’s seem to be a problem with connectivity after new firmware.
I need your help! When iam trying to install the software you shown in the Video, the Installer asks for this: "Camera_Installer_n.nn" If i dont open it the install will fail. Any ideas?
March 2023: I'm trying to update to the latest firmware, 8.0 on my BMPC6kPro just recently purchased. I started with trying the 7.9.2 update and it said I was already up to date. It says the same thing on the 8.0 update. My firmware version is 7.9.1. I'm confused why it says I don't need the update...
I no longer own the BMPCC6K so this tutorial is no longer being kept up to date so what I'm about to say is unsupported to a degree. The update package (Blackmagic Camera Setup 8.0 as of March 2023) covers many cameras and contains the latest firmware available for each camera it supports. An updated camera setup download may not actually contain a new firmware for a given camera. The BMPCC6KPro latest firmware within this may be a lower number so it might be the case that it is indeed up to date. When googling BMPCC6KPro latest firmware I am not seeing anything beyond 7.9.1 though I am not doing an extensive search.
Here because you're having issues updating? Try uninstalling the Camera Setup application THROUGH the installer. This usually fixes stuff like the update not showing up.

curious as to your thoughts on the recent implementation of the internal gyro and davinci beta stabilization. im currently in the middle of a project and cant install the beta but im hearing great things about it. seen a few examples and just wow.. hope your weekend is awesome
Sorry for the slow reply. I wanted to try this out for myself rather than rehash someone elses POV from watching their video. In short I think overall its great that BMD have made this update. Certainly no complaints about free helpful features. My thoughts on the actual performance are that I don't think the results are quite as stable as something like say the perspective satablizer already available however, you also get far less jelly artifacts using gyro vs perspective/similarity/translation so for me as someone who cannot stand adding problems to the footage in an attempt to fix other problems, I personally would rather the clip be quite stableized and no weird artifacts are added than to have super stable and lots of artifacts. So overall Im impressed and happy with it. What are your thoughts?

I was mentioning earlier to someone that I wasnt aware we were supposed to enter the lens data before the shoot. The BRAW file writes the metadata and also I wasnt supposed to use lens optical stabilizers. so once I dialed all that in I was very impressed. not perfect but much better than the software for sure. just as usual will crop in the more it shakes. its actually quite a straightforward plan. the most you shake the more you lose. I tried to same run n gun handheld stuff and with a fast shutter I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked without jiggle artifacts. I mean rolling shutter still there but you know
followed all the steps exactly as described - "Black Magic Camera Setup" is not finding the camera. edit: fixed the issue: if you run into the same error - try using a different usb 3 to usb-c type cable

So I followed along with everything you show in this tutorial. Windows 10. When I open the installed "Blackmagic Camera app" it doesnt do anything. The tab is in the taskbar which indicates that it is opened but when I click it nothing happens. When I hover my mouse over the top of the app in the taskbar a little blank white screen is shown. Any Suggestions?
That sounds like the app didn't install correctly. I would perform a clean install and I would run the installer as an administrator while doing so. Also a reboot after installing is always a good idea.
Hello, I need your help. I have problems with the iris using Nikon lenses. I have the Metabones Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x adapter for Nikon G, and without having updated the iris, it does not work. I use the lenses of my Nikon D850 camera but trying with all the lenses the iris does not work on my BMPCC 4k. Could you help me please.
The only information I can offer is to see if there is an update for the adapter with metabones. The performance of an adapter is the responsibility on the adapters manufacturer.
How can I check which cameras work with the latest updates (for example, the Cinema 2.5 K)? Or will new updates to Blackmagic firmware work with all associated products?
I need you to tell me exactly how you went about this because to turn your camera on during an update suggests that you also turned it off during the update which is the best way to brick your camera. This video does not tell you to turn it on during an update. It very clearly shows that you turn it on, then software detects the camera and the latest update for that camera and then you start the update with the camera REMAINING on. So let’s get this much cleared up.
Hi If you have time, could you please expand on your comment (or even post a link) that people have been experiencing iris issues with their metabones adapters with this new update. I have a BMPCC4K and literally just purchased a Metabones Speedbooster XL 0.64 so would like to know a little more before updating. Cheers & much appreciated
Not much more to say. I added that to the notes as there are quite a few comments on this video from viewers stating this issue. My guess is that the part of the update that “improved” autofocus has cause compatibility issues with lens adapters and its manifested in the form a loss of iris control. Just wait for issue to addressed before updating and use the adapter I say.
Honestly, it’s something I’ve never taken notice of 😂 but now that I think about it, I think it’s only showing that because I am plugged into mains power so it’s showing percentage because of that. That’s just a guess though. I’m always rigged up with a 155Wh v-lock battery so I never look at the battery indicator.
My guess is all the adapter/speedbooster issues people are experiencing (and now lenses too, your the first case I’ve personally heard) is as a result of the update to the auto focus. Seems to be causing upset to the communication with some adapters and lens. You’ll have to downgrade the firmware and sit this one out until the issues have been addressed I’m afraid.
Google "downgrade bmpcc firmware". The first hit should be a discussion on the BMD forums. Read it fully befor attempting but it's meant to be as simple as removing the current software from your system and installing the older one you desire and following the same precedure.
Great video! Updating the camera done in no time :) Question: does anybody know what the red tag is called that you see attached on the left side of the camera, on 03.54 for example? I see it on a lot of filmmakers camera's, what is it for? Is it just a luggage tag?
That’s a clip mechanism from a company called Peak Design. They’re shoulder and wrist straps and are really quick to attach and detach. You buy one shoulder strap and a few spare connectors and put them on all you cameras so it’s quick and easy to swap out 👍

I have not had a chance to update, but some guys saying they can no longer change the iris in their cameras.. I shoot with Canon Lens and would be screwed if I cannot change the iris... Anybody else have this problem? EDIT*** Apparently it is a problem with Viltrox thank gosh..
From what I have seen the people having iris issues are people using viltrox speedboosters. But if in doubt what a while and see what issues present themselves. If you can’t afford these issues don’t be the Guinea Pig.
Switch the power button on the camera to OFF and unplug the power adaptor - Connect the camera to the computer using a USB-C data cable. - Start Camera Setup software on your computer. - Connect the power cable to the camera (DO NOT power ON). - Press and hold the Auto focus button on the camera and switch the power switch to ON, and wait until you see the Camera Setup on the computer detecting your camera, prompting Software update available. - Click on "Update Now" to start the firmware update again.

So they sent me link for resolve studio..Ah, the activation code…that’s the rub…but yes, below the flap of the box was the card. Successful studio, 17. Now update camera..pins like bent off set.. I get the stripping it down to bare bone before performing the update, but I hope the atrocious battery of the BMPCC will stay enough to allow the firmware update to complete? I have never seen a more useless batteries like the ones in these BM beauties. It's almost sinful!
oh, I think at 2:00 you did mention to use the mains charger to keep the camera powered on, so I wonder why you mentioned also to strip the camera of every accessory except the battery.?
Electric accessories such as a smart lens adapter can cause the update to fail. Keeping a battery in is just a fail safe. If there is a power trip in your property your battery will keep your camera powered on and buy you some time to figure out a solution.

I can confirm iris control DOES WORK just fine with my Metabones .64 on the Pocket 4K ... used a Canon 16-35 2.8 if that matters.

Sorry for the slow reply. I wanted to try this out for myself rather than rehash someone elses POV from watching their video.
In short I think overall its great that BMD have made this update. Certainly no complaints about free helpful features.
My thoughts on the actual performance are that I don't think the results are quite as stable as something like say the perspective satablizer already available however, you also get far less jelly artifacts using gyro vs perspective/similarity/translation so for me as someone who cannot stand adding problems to the footage in an attempt to fix other problems, I personally would rather the clip be quite stableized and no weird artifacts are added than to have super stable and lots of artifacts. So overall Im impressed and happy with it. What are your thoughts?

I was mentioning earlier to someone that I wasnt aware we were supposed to enter the lens data before the shoot. The BRAW file writes the metadata and also I wasnt supposed to use lens optical stabilizers. so once I dialed all that in I was very impressed. not perfect but much better than the software for sure. just as usual will crop in the more it shakes. its actually quite a straightforward plan. the most you shake the more you lose. I tried to same run n gun handheld stuff and with a fast shutter I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked without jiggle artifacts. I mean rolling shutter still there but you know

edit: fixed the issue: if you run into the same error - try using a different usb 3 to usb-c type cable

So I followed along with everything you show in this tutorial. Windows 10. When I open the installed "Blackmagic Camera app" it doesnt do anything. The tab is in the taskbar which indicates that it is opened but when I click it nothing happens. When I hover my mouse over the top of the app in the taskbar a little blank white screen is shown. Any Suggestions?
That sounds like the app didn't install correctly. I would perform a clean install and I would run the installer as an administrator while doing so. Also a reboot after installing is always a good idea.
Hello, I need your help. I have problems with the iris using Nikon lenses. I have the Metabones Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x adapter for Nikon G, and without having updated the iris, it does not work. I use the lenses of my Nikon D850 camera but trying with all the lenses the iris does not work on my BMPCC 4k. Could you help me please.
The only information I can offer is to see if there is an update for the adapter with metabones. The performance of an adapter is the responsibility on the adapters manufacturer.
What is the cable I need to use to connect my bmpcc 6k pro to my computer?

I need you to tell me exactly how you went about this because to turn your camera on during an update suggests that you also turned it off during the update which is the best way to brick your camera. This video does not tell you to turn it on during an update. It very clearly shows that you turn it on, then software detects the camera and the latest update for that camera and then you start the update with the camera REMAINING on. So let’s get this much cleared up.

Mostly likely culprit is a faulty or incompatible cable.

Not much more to say. I added that to the notes as there are quite a few comments on this video from viewers stating this issue. My guess is that the part of the update that “improved” autofocus has cause compatibility issues with lens adapters and its manifested in the form a loss of iris control. Just wait for issue to addressed before updating and use the adapter I say.

Honestly, it’s something I’ve never taken notice of 😂 but now that I think about it, I think it’s only showing that because I am plugged into mains power so it’s showing percentage because of that. That’s just a guess though. I’m always rigged up with a 155Wh v-lock battery so I never look at the battery indicator.
If you haven't figure this out yet, just tap the battery icon. It changes between voltage and percent

Does the firmware update fix any unresponsive touch screen issues? My touch screen seems to be a little finicky, not always responding to touch.

Does the camera crop in when filming in 4K DCI RAW or does the camera downscale the 6K image from the full sensor readout?
It crops. That’s the nature of RAW.

Hi, I updated the firmware of my BMPCC4K and i found that my lumix G Vario 45-200 on the BMPCC4k no longer works. What happened?
My guess is all the adapter/speedbooster issues people are experiencing (and now lenses too, your the first case I’ve personally heard) is as a result of the update to the auto focus. Seems to be causing upset to the communication with some adapters and lens. You’ll have to downgrade the firmware and sit this one out until the issues have been addressed I’m afraid.

Google "downgrade bmpcc firmware". The first hit should be a discussion on the BMD forums. Read it fully befor attempting but it's meant to be as simple as removing the current software from your system and installing the older one you desire and following the same precedure.

Yes. Just pick a different upgrade version and do the same exact steps using the lower firmware. My "Iris" control was missing after this 7.3 update.

Great video! Updating the camera done in no time :) Question: does anybody know what the red tag is called that you see attached on the left side of the camera, on 03.54 for example? I see it on a lot of filmmakers camera's, what is it for? Is it just a luggage tag?
That’s a clip mechanism from a company called Peak Design. They’re shoulder and wrist straps and are really quick to attach and detach. You buy one shoulder strap and a few spare connectors and put them on all you cameras so it’s quick and easy to swap out 👍

Do not update your camera on 8.6. Problem with panoramic video. Sticks.
I have not had a chance to update, but some guys saying they can no longer change the iris in their cameras.. I shoot with Canon Lens and would be screwed if I cannot change the iris... Anybody else have this problem?
EDIT*** Apparently it is a problem with Viltrox thank gosh..
From what I have seen the people having iris issues are people using viltrox speedboosters. But if in doubt what a while and see what issues present themselves. If you can’t afford these issues don’t be the Guinea Pig.

Switch the power button on the camera to OFF and unplug the power adaptor
- Connect the camera to the computer using a USB-C data cable.
- Start Camera Setup software on your computer.
- Connect the power cable to the camera (DO NOT power ON).
- Press and hold the Auto focus button on the camera and switch the power switch to ON, and wait until you see the Camera Setup on the computer detecting your camera, prompting Software update available.
- Click on "Update Now" to start the firmware update again.
viltrox needs to update their firmware as my speedbooster is not working anymore hahaha

Support kind enough to tell me I can down load free resolve..( luckily I know what I bought. Had all receipts. Had registered.. So they sent me link for resolve studio..Ah, the activation code…that’s the rub…but yes, below the flap of the box was the card. Successful studio, 17. Now update camera..pins like bent off set.. BUMMER. if you have workaround. If you could be so kind….Do you have classes? Happy Holidays…
I get the stripping it down to bare bone before performing the update, but I hope the atrocious battery of the BMPCC will stay enough to allow the firmware update to complete? I have never seen a more useless batteries like the ones in these BM beauties. It's almost sinful!
oh, I think at 2:00 you did mention to use the mains charger to keep the camera powered on, so I wonder why you mentioned also to strip the camera of every accessory except the battery.?
Electric accessories such as a smart lens adapter can cause the update to fail. Keeping a battery in is just a fail safe. If there is a power trip in your property your battery will keep your camera powered on and buy you some time to figure out a solution.

None of the the footage I recorded with the new 7.3 update works in Davinci Resolve 16? WTF!!!!!
Only resolve 16.3.2 beta and 17 onward are compatible with Gen 5 color science so my guess is that you’re using too old a version of resolve.
