Someone needs to make a 1" cube lidar device that does the same thing as the phone with a simple OLED screen for settings and calibration.
That’d be sweet!
I've seem one in the works like a year ago ... I guess it was some crowfunding platform ... guess they failed :)
I can make that. But its probably easier to make with a tof sensor. Like the Texas Instrument opt3101 i got in a bag here somewhere.
The "Cube" is the AFX from CDA-Tek. It performs well. For zoom lenses too. The only downside is that programming is done with buttons, on the device. Focus Puller and AFX would be the ideal combination!
There's the a device by Axoncine. Originally they made one specifically for the BMPCC4k/6k which controlled lenses electronically, and was operated via bluetooth (a pretty slick way of doing it, imho). However, they discontinued it, and replaced it with a device that does the same thing, but requires a Tilta Nano focus motor.
This video is underrated. This is so useful and crafty. Thank you for this gem of a hack!
This is amazing! I've been putting off looking into focus rings for months for my 4K, glad I did. Works like a charm and saves me more than a few bucks haha!
Always nice to save some dough! Hope it works well for you!
Pretty cool. :) Hope the app gets a little update to allow for slower and more natural pulls, and perhaps an option to not instantly snap to what whatever is covered by the dot so people could cross the frame. And a wider coverage area and the ability to place it wherever to allow for the dot to stray a bit, and for off centre composition.
Also, I’m guessing this rules out using zoom lenses? And if the phone shifts, you’d need to recalibrate it? (Can the App store calibration data for different lenses and between lens changes and uses?)
I guess needing to position it next to the lens means no Matt boxes either.
With the setup, perhaps a cage and something to securely attach the phone to the centre just above the lens and as far forward as it can go. (Something custom without joints, but maybe telescopic to allow for different lens sizes).
The phone could then be completely centered (for balance) and the LiDAR would be in approximately the same position it is here (except top mounted). Or if preferred, just slightly to one side instead of all the way, with the LiDAR perfectly centred over the lens.
If done correctly, the setup should be repeatable too, meaning no calibration each time?
I am a cheap skate but I've been wanting autofocus on my Blackmagic 6K for a long time. I've spent $12.99 on much less useful things. lmao. I did exactly what you said, downloaded the free version, tested it out with my lens, I was beyond tripped out seeing my BM6K autofocusing, and just bought it. I haven't done any calibrations yet but the mere fact that the connection was made and the lens was moving around as I moved my phone was enough for me to actually try to calibrate it. Thanks for being so vigorous at this problem!
Can you buy a lens that has autofocus and put it on the Blackmagic?
@@deltaboy2011 Yeah you can. The Blackmagic has 1 tap autofocus, not to be confused with continuous autofocus. If you press and hold on your screen or use the center autofocus button, your autofocus lens will do it's job. This app allows you to use continuous autofocus through bluetooth and lidar. It works pretty well, you just have to nail your calibration and mount it properly that it wont move.
@@Sincerelytk With an autofocus lens on Blackmagic camera, you can let it do its job continously without all the gimmicks of the iphone and app and so on right? I'm new to cameras.
@@deltaboy2011 No. You are incorrect. Without the iphone (for the example in this video) the camera will not "continuous" autofocus. ONLY 1 tap autofocus. The reason for this video is to show you how to get continuous autofocus without additional gear like a 3d lidar module and ronin gimbal.
@@Sincerelytk so not even an electronic focus lens won’t do it?
Hi Michael ! Great video as always. Pretty sure that the FOV of the LIDAR on the iPhone is about 70° so, if you put the iPhone vertically and point it a little bit down, the green point should be centered while the depth map should cover enough FOV. Maybe give it a try, if u didn't already.
Solid idea! I have not tried it vertically, definitely will give it a shot!
@@initialfocus I'd be happy to know if it works (or not) :D
Cheers from France
@@initialfocus yeah keep us posted
Nice discovery! I love it. Seems like it would be easy to implement an ease in/out function, unless its some stepper motor limitation. though I CAN do it by hand with the usual Blackmagic camera app and get that soft ease. ive been using the iPhone LIDAR for visual effects needs for a while now. Scanning rooms to create models for reference and dynamics simulations. I can tell you, the awesome next step for this would be to merge the LIDAR metadata into the BRAW (sort of how Blackmagic is doing with the gyro for stabilization) and use the LIDAR to pull focus on anything, as well as aperture in post. I know, thats crazy but that would be amazing. sort of how the light field cameras work. oh I can only dream.
The resolution of the depth map of the iPhone LiDAR is : 256x192
You already get a beautiful background blur with lenses.
@@tradingcafe_fr 256x192 what?. And Im not suggesting using Lidar to generate bokeh.
do i need auto focus or anything when shooting talking heads solo on a blackmagic? or just set focus and forget even when i move a little on my chair?
You can set focus and forget if they sit mostly still, and if you have a small enough aperture f/4 and higher. If you have shallow DoP or they move a lot, you need to be careful and adjust focus from time to time. You can do it manually however too, don't need AF for that, you just need to pay attention during the interview. I have done it, and for people who do not change position all the time, it can work
Blackmagic just needs to have Sony level AF. The technology is out there. Enough with the cameras that don't have it at least built in as an option. GREAT VIDEO!
Unfortunately they don’t own any patents. So I don’t think they will ever have auto focus unless they acquire a company that has the technology.
The Bluetooth+ app for Blackmagic DOES allow focus pulling and points, as well as speed between points. Doesn't support Lidar yet to my knowledge.
Great idea. One question, if you move the iPhone, can you shift the focus to a point off centre? This would make up for one of the shorter comings you mentioned.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention! Is there a way to slow down the focus pull, in case we want a gradual pull? Have you tested it out on let's say a push in on a single subject, to see if it focuses in steps or if it's gradual?
With the manual focus you can get pretty smooth. I’m sure it also may vary on the lens being used. However as I said in the video, for the markers there’s no smooth focus pull option. It just instantly switches.
@@initialfocus sorry I should’ve been more specific and said with the lidar option
wich better blackmagic 4k or iphone 15 pro for virtual productions with green screen ?
Interesting concept but it doesn’t work well. I dont know if it’s the app or the iphone 13 pro max lidar but measured distances are wildly inconsistent, at least for me. Ill point at something 6 meters away then to something about 1 meter away then back to 6. Sometimes the 6 meter distance measures at 6, sometimes 1.5, other times any number in between. Would love to try the rs3 lidar to see if it’s the phone (which I suspect is the issue) but not sure it’s worth the money if it can’t be 100% reliable…or really even if it is.
Do u think a blackmagic production camera would be a good buy in 2022? As its now availabke used for cheap
What lens are you using? I am new to this. I don't understand how to have an electronic lens on a Black Magic. I have the BMPCC 4k.
I have a blackmagic 4K pocket camera and a Sigma 18-35mm lens. Does the app work with them?
I take it, the app isn't available for Android?
No ANDROID, That wipes out half the populous of Photographers. BRILLIANT!!
Cool, Does it work with Sony? And if so, you can add those markers and have the focus on slow... Will check it out.
Could this application work also on Nikon DSLRs????????????
No App for Android Smartphones?🙃
LIDAR tech is predominantly cool for giving vintage manual focus lenses that power of precision focusing for most user folks not used to manual glass. But this one seems to only use autofocus lenses.
Awesome video! I noticed that your lens was an 18-135. What field of view were you on when you calibrated? And what happens when you zoom in/out? Does it keep focus still?
You know, I did not really test that lol. Just stayed at 18mm. I’ll test it out for the next video people are asking for
That's pretty impressive!
Do you have to recalibrate it on your zoom lense, if it's not parfocal (which most zooms aren't) or does it have some internal data to compensate for that when telling the app which lense model you're using?
Going to test this more! Not sure to be honest. Kept it at 18mm for this video but it’s a great point for zooms!
@@initialfocus Agreed, this would be interesting to see!
Thank you so much for this. Totally awesome. I downloaded it, tried it out and purchased the app. Worth it!
how about you connect DJI LiDAR to type c hub and type c hub to power and phone
Need this for the Sigma FP. So cool!
It technically works via Bluetooth so it may work with other cameras that can connect to stuff like this! Blackmagic is all I have though so I didn’t want to say it worked for all Bluetooth cameras.
@@initialfocus did you mentioned which iphone you were using?
i cant get this to work at all properly
You can't smoothly transition from one focus mark to the other, it just jumps instantly.
"So that's kind of the only downside..."
Which basically makes it useless?
Not if you are vlogging
i shoot on my blackmagic in manual all the time, however i also do self tape auditions and for this I need an autofocus. been looking for an option and this may be the one.
thanks!
Is it also work in Nikon DSLR
I'm unable to download this app. every time i click the google link... it tells me the app isn't available in my region.
Hi Michael ! Such a great idea !!!
Is It avalaible for android phone?
Thanks a lot!
do you need a electronic lens for this?
Yup!
Hey would you mind listing the magic arm , phone clamp, and phone case you used or magic arm that you would recommend?
does this work on first 6k? NotG2,Not PRO
I mean as cool as this is...I really really suggest that people who go out a buy cine cameras just need to suck it up and pull focus manually. Yes is more effort and can be more expensive to do so but ultimately what you buy these camera bodies for is for more control over your image. I think the industry has gotten people to believe that "easy" is more convenient when in reality you really shouldn't cut corners where you don't have to. If you want auto focus there are plenty of good bodies out there (Canon R5C, C70 Sony FX3, FX6 etc.). These kind of solutions are nice to discover but out in the field can't be trusted fully.
Not a great solution when you’re snapping stills. Still need AF or twice as much time as a subject will give you.
Yeah, still gotta spend the 2 bandz... Im overdue for a new gimbal anyways, I milked the crap out of my Crane 2. Still works though!
thank you for this video, but please also show us outside in open space, how its do the focus.
quickest $12 I've ever spent.... and quickest sub
Can you use the iPhone as a monitor with the lidar app running in the background?
I don't know BMD cameras, but besides the adding markers feature, would the camera not have similar in camera features like Sony cameras do for touch track subject , etc. what's the limitations of using the lens AF function to achieve center focus versus using the phone Lidar?
You mention needing a lens with electronic focus. I use a Sigma 18-35 1.8 DC lens. How do I know if that or any other lens has electronic focus? How do you check for that? Thanks!
If your lens has any auto focus ability (which ur does) then it’s an electronic lens. Giveaways are the electric pins by the back of the lens mount. Cine lenses or full manual lenses don’t have those.
How did you managed to connect the app to the BMPCC6k? It doesn,t work with me. I have the Iphone 13 and the latest bm firmware.
Does the issue seem on the app side or you don’t see the Bluetooth settings in ur Bm menu?
@@initialfocus App side. Camera ist connected to Iphone via Bluetooth.
Would it work with a Viltrox speedbooster?
As long as the speedbooster and lens still had the metal connectors to enable autofocus in camera then yes it should work just fine
This is literally the only video I’ve seen about this. How is no one talking about this still?
thanks for sharing this amazing tech Michael! If I don't get wrong, only those iPhone series with lidar can use this function?
Welcome! And correct. I believe the iPhone 12 Pro was the first to get LiDAR so it would be the last 2 generations of Pro (max) iPhones.
Does this work with the Original 6k as well or only the pro model?
im shocked this has taken as long as it has to be implemented. i hope we get this in more cameras.
Blackmagic actually has had this for quite a while, it was the lidar side on the phone that took the time. Cause I've used the focus pull from an other app in 2019 with my P4K.
does it work with the best black magic camera, the bmpcc original OG? BECAUSE YOUR VIDEO HEADING SAYS "AutoFocus For Blackmagic Cameras".
Not sure if Huge camera or tiny man?
Thanks for this would love to know how you managed to get the setup right!
would this work for the ursamini 4.6k?
I have seen many limitations on the system, do you have a better app using the lidar to connect at the camera? The focus with a reference only the center is ultra ultra basic, impossible to use the sytem on a gimbal... Thanks
Hello Michael, hello YT, please help me understand better: In scenario, when you have your "electronic" Canon 18-135mm lens on your BMPCC 6K Pro and original DJI Lidar modul + RS3 Pro, you are still able to connect system without follow focus? Or we need always that follow focus modul as "end part" ? I am asking because my favorite setup it that specific lens with BMPCC 6K Pro. Thanx for explanation.
or maybe scenario with lens like Sigma 18-35 f1.8. Should i use it with DJI follow focus / or there is some electronic/BT way how to make it as "autofocus" setup? Thanx in advance for explanation!
Looks like a brilliant app and it would be great to see it working with a solid clamped iPhone and in some actual filming scenarios. Do you think you will be up for doing that?
Lots of people asking for it so I think I just might!
@@initialfocus awesome, can't wait to see it :)
objektiv olympus 40-150??
Do they have anything like this that gives you auto ISO?
BRAW
not possible to connect LIDAR focus viewer not supported on this device (device: euro, France) ?
It doesn't work for me, I connected the camera and the app, and I can't use the manual focus, the camera doesn't respond.
After test this app my lumix 12-35/2.8 not work! The focus is not work 🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂ How to recover the functionality of my lens ???😭 How to return my default calibration of the lens ?
Can something similar be done with an android and ronin sc2?
Could you make a followup on this app whit a bmpcc 4k whit viltrox speedboster and a 18-35 sigma?
You are the only one on YT who has a video on this app!!
Does this work with Blackmagic Pocket 4k?
cannot find the app - please advise its correct name
“Focus Puller” it’s a red circle icon. On the iOS app store
does it have sitting to make the focus smother or tune the speed of transition the focus?
Great app but If you have to tap on the phone to change focus then the process is still pretty much manual.
Most folks looking for autofocus need to concentrate on shooting the subject while the focus is being taken care of automatically, I stand to be corrected though.
I dont know if you need the actual gimbal to use the dji lidar and motor focus puller
Care to link the products for the rig? (Arm etc.)
This is pretty neat!
The app Bluetooth + for bmpcc’s has been around for years. I get it this is LiDAR?!
Is it possible to move the green dot around the screen to adjust what you are focusing on? Not every focus point is in the centre of a frame and keeping a finger on the screen to hold a focus point seems rather cumbersome.
Nope, that’s why I mentioned I used the magic arm so I can move the phone and green dot to where I want to focus it. The iPhone LiDAR has a very limited field of view. It can’t see everything the actual camera lens can see so it’s only focused on the center
Is there a start recording/stop recording button option?
Not in this app no. I know the Bluetooth+ app has camera controls, and manual focus control. Just not the LiDAR function
One thing blackmagic always does, is to wait for everyone to do all these modifications for a particular feature and then come out with a new version of the camera with the built-in feature that everyone is looking for....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.....I'll wait for the auto focus.
Thank for a great review and a brilliant idea .
Can’t wait to grab my 6K and try it !
Also even bigger news seems to be that with this app , you can use your iPhone as a low lag video monitor!
Haha! Not monitoring BMPCC 6K … image is from iPhone :)
Doh ... it works only with Iphone Pro/Pro Max.
You can still manually pull focus using other iPhones (I got Mini 13).
This would work well on a shoulder mount, and use a clamp mount for the iphone from the rod on the left side... Nice dude, i'm going to try this out!
okay this is sick. DOWNLOADING NOW
It’s a great little app to have! Probably not going to be used on every shoot but damn if I needed autofocus in a pinch for some setup. It’s a nice option to be able to quickly rig on.
Michael, thanks! Hey did you have any issues getting this to work? Currently trying to use the app on my iPhone 13 Pro Max with my BMPCC 6k Pro and it does nothing beyond seeming to connect via Bluetooth to the camera. Manual focus doesn’t even work. And yes, tried two electronic lenses with AF, one Canon, one Sigma. 🧐
Any luck? I have the Sigma art which I dont think works with bmpcc although it does have electrical connectors. It is a shame bm chose to kneecap their cameras in terms of stills.
UPDATE: I have gotten this to work with this combo using Bluetooth+
Doesn’t the Blackmagic app allow you to pull focus as well?
The Bluetooth+ app I know does. I believe blackmagics app is just for the iPad which may pull focus as well! The biggest feature of this app is the LiDAR
@@initialfocus I've used the BM bluetooth+ app on my iPhone 12 Pro Max a couple of times. But it definitely doesn't have a LiDAR tracker.
not follow focus. you can click "autofocus" and if youre lens can do it, it will snap to focus, but not auto as you move around
That app only works with iPads. Sure you could mount the ipad but if it isn't a mini...come on lol
@@RealWorldReview what app?
I wonder if there might be a suitable rig setup to mount the iphone securely. The only two things keeping me from getting BM cameras is no AF and poor low light
I know autofocus is a huge con for many people using Blackmagic. Low light tho has improved greatly over the years. My first Blackmagic couldn’t film over 800 ISO. Now it has dual native iso at 400 and 3200. I’ve shot 6400-25,600 and saved some clips with noise reduction in resolve. It may not be Sony, but it’s pretty damn solid in low light
I have the OG 6k and the noise is intolerable. Great cam in bright light and under just the right circumstances but dang, you need the perfect storm of circumstances.
Probably better to use this with rods Than magic arm.
Michael always giving out value. Thank you.. It sucks that there aren't any apps for android users.
I'm guessing the reason for that is, very few Android phones have LiDAR built into time (other than a handful of older Samsung Galaxy phones).
Is there a similar app for GH5/6?
How is the black magic camera tracking in the beginning?!?
DJI LiDAR for the RS3 Pro gimbal has active track
Do you know if AC APP for Android offers something similar with a Pixel 6? Eg: auto tracking like demonstrated in your video?
Would this work on GH5 or is there anything similar ?
I’m not sure. In theory it could be any Bluetooth camera but I’d suggest downloading for free and testing
Could not get this app to auto-focus at all. Manually it works though.
Why not just make a LiDar Bluetooth device that connects directly and therefore controls the camera?
RnD
Saw the thumbnail/title and had to check this out - you know me, I suffer from Unrealistic Minimalism.... What if you get an accessory for the hotshoe area that allows you to shift the phone so that the lidar area is pararell with the lens, THEN tilt the lidar down slightly so that it's viewing pretty much with the lens is? Maybe you've tried it and it doesn't work. But if something like that could work... DUUUUUUDE!
Hah! Of course this is the video that grabs you 😂 and you know, you’re the second person to mention something like that. I think it’s a great idea. Much for stable and minimal looking to mount on top and then just aim down to have the green dot focused on where the middle framing of the camera is focused on. There’s no reason it wouldn’t work!
"Unrealistic Minimalism" I love that.
Thanks for exploring new alternatives…. 👏👏👏
I love the big expensive toys like anyone else but it’s always nice to stumble upon something cool that also doesn’t wreck my wallet 😂
This also shows you’re clearly seeing in advance the future of this technology … so I appreciate people like you being always excited to investigate further and deeper…. So thanks again.😊
This is awesome! I would love to see a real-use application!
Lots of people asking so I may do a more real world scenario use of it vs the dji lidar!
I would use this rig but I need to get a newer phone first before I can use it.
Oh wow this is SO helpful!!
Wow! What a great tip! Gonna try right now! Thank you very much :)
Which iPhone models work?
I believe the iPhone 12 Pro (and max) were the first to get LiDAR. So those and the 13 Pros (max as well)
I don't work 4K pocket Lunix 25 so wasted money.
This is great! Thanks for this video
Nothing for Android?
Nothing found yet comparable. Still looking!
