      @@2GoatsInATrenchCoat it activates only once per turn. Do keep in mind that that doesn't mean once per round. This means If you have 5 allies who bat your victim on each of their turns you deal a total of 10d6 off of it. But them moving 60 feet on their turn provokes only 2d6, any movement after is safe because you've already taken the damage this turn.
      It's actually less effective on falls than you might think. Players in d&d fall FAST: according to Xanathars 500 feet per round(83 feet per second) meaning you're not getting much damage from the thorns. Grasping arrow works better when your opponent uses feather fall, but it still isn't great(feather fall reduces fall speed to 60 feet per round or 10/s). it can help you eek in some extra punishment: while your opponent avoids 20d6 of slamming into the ground you can get 6d6 in from their involuntary movement which is more than you would have otherwise.
      It's not exceptional by any means, but it can make for some really cool moments.

    This is part of why I enjoy watching DnD with different DMs. Most DMs I can think of would rule that the punishment damage would only count for intentional movement, but Brennan's primary goal is always to make his players feel as empowered as possible, and to have fun.

    • @Lordgrayson
      @Lordgrayson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      I mean rules as intended it is only for intentional movement, so it makes sense for that to be the standard for most DM's

    • @SmawCity
      @SmawCity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      I mean, if the player did 80d6 because something fell from 40ft up with this spell on it, I’d be massively deflated as a DM. It is all being brought about from a very specific interpretation of the wording that does not hold up on how the spell is supposed to work, which is why I wouldn’t allow it.

    • @Lordgrayson
      @Lordgrayson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@SmawCity yeah I can totally understand that, especially if this is meant to be a big boss type of character. It's the same issue with Nat 20's, at my tables Natural 20's usually make you succeed but its not a sure thing

    • @dylancarter9290
      @dylancarter9290 2 ปีที่แล้ว +109

      @@Lordgrayson I'm pretty similar. I typically interpret natural 20s as best possible result, rather than absolute success. For instance, if a character rolls a nat 20 seducing Tiamat, it would make no sense canonically for her to immediately abandon her utter hatred for all inferior creatures and lay with a bard, but maybe the performance amused her so much that she'll spare them for entertainment. Malleable rules and varied gaming experiences are what's kept DnD around for 40+years

    • @Lordgrayson
      @Lordgrayson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@dylancarter9290 exactly, I once had a character who ended up getting the party in a really stupid fight against a group of guards for no reason (the rogue decided to pickpocket one as they ended this town that was essentially under martial law) they got fought over to the side of a cliff and through some pretty unlucky rolls 2 players had gone down(group of 4 level ones against 6 guards) the rogue decided he was gonna jump off the cliff and flap his arms as hard as possible, hoping he would roll a Nat 20 and be able to fly or have feather falling or some shit. I was a new DM so I let him roll the acrobatics after some debate, he rolled a nat 20. So I describe as he leaps over the side of the cliff and dies his best impression of Wile.E.Coyote before he fell the 60 feet down and took 3d6 damage(half damage cause of Nat 20 seemed fair) he went down and then died to death saves as even the guards couldn't get to him unlike the other 2 people who went down who they saved and brought in for a trial. It's still a story I tell new players at my table to let then know how I treat natural 20's in my games(my games are known to be pretty comical at times, I've had a literal God watch the party and heckle them like statler and Waldorf for a couple sessions after they killed one of his priests)

      @@normal6483 Specifically, I believe Grasping Arrow to be a case of the former as mentioned by OP, but I also agree with the rest of their statement. • @deadpoolrwbyfan8419
      @deadpoolrwbyfan8419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      I seriously doubt it. Effects in 5e do exactly what they are written as doing. If a feature only triggers when they willingly move, such as Booming Blade, it says so in the description. The Grasping Arrow reads ‘the first time on each turn it moves 1 foot or more without teleporting.’ It’s worded much closer to the Spike Growth spell, which triggers the damage when they move regardless of if they were willing or not.

      @@rubber924 Yeah, true. As much as I agree with the whole "forced movement should trigger the on-move damage effect" argument, I think that thrashing against the vines is supposed to be the source of the damage. Then again, if your options are a) thrash against the vines, or b) fall & be splattered upon the mountainside, then yeah - maybe we can assume she's thrashing. So it kinda balances out, as long as you only apply the 2d6 once per round.

    i dont think i personally would have given them the extra damage since the person falling wasn't actively pushing through vines to try and get away. HOWEVER they were probably struggling against them somewhat to try and regain their flying as they fell so i would probably let them take some extra damage just not the full amount that they would have moving per foot. i'd just add like 2d12 or something to make up for the extra struggle damage on the thorns.

    This reminds me of an RPG I listened to, where one player, whose character falls off a second story window, unnecessarily asks "do I land on broken glass shards?"

    At first, I thought it was every time it moves a foot or more, but it's only taking the damage once per /turn/ that it moves a foot or more. Still devastating, but not as extreme as I thought.

    I'd like to state that the logic behind the damage over distance aspect of Grasping Thorns is that the thorns also grasp onto objects in your vicinity that you may pass, such as ground, other foliage, objects, etc. So with no solids in your immediate vicinity, you'd only really be in danger of taking damage upon the initial casting of the spell in this case, and maybe again upon landing.
