    Enjoyed the review. I like seeing all the various art supplies . One of the best aspects of your channel is that you cover materials in a broad price range and your tutorials use supplies across all price ranges. I enjoy watching the tutorials because you are enthusiastic about creating with a wide range of materials and demonstrate that beautiful creations can be achieved with any and all supplies. You’re the best!!

    Great review! I actually was in the same situation. Had bought the smaller set, and come to find out the portrait set is indeed 20 of the new colors they released. The other 4 colors I had to buy individually. They were natural russet 066, dark Phtalocyanine green 719, dark flesh 748, and dark flesh 5% 741.

      The portrait set has some amazing colours - I bought it first, then the 4 individuals and last the 76 set. I rearranged them all to keep the neutral colours in the small box - I use them a lot! 😎

    Your one of The most trusted names and voices in the industry on TH-cam, where people go to get trusted information, and I’m biased opinions on new products that are out there. I like despite the name that you do all sorts of art supplies on the financial spectrum, high and low. I’d love to see some more high end watercolours being reviewed as well.

    I bought the CD portrait set of 20 and assorted set of 20 in 2021. Then towards the end of the year I branched out to watercoloring. So I used them until 2021 but since then they’ve been sitting pretty in their boxes!
    I enjoyed your review very much because it reignited my enthusiasm for the luminance pencils and I should use them. It’s a good reminder that lightfast pencils can be used over watercolor pieces as a mixed media work that might be displayed. I try to be a watercolor purist but once when I made a non-fixable error on a watercolor painting I used my soft pastels and CD Pablo pencils to fix the problems. I really enjoy my Pablo’s. They keep a firm point but lay down so smooth over soft pastels and watercolors. Not everyone enjoys the Pablo pencils which is fine, everyone has a personal preference. Thanks!

    Hullo Lindsay, I just chuckled when you criticized the “Jankie” background! I know that I know every minuscule mistake in my artwork too! That bag of oranges looks so perfect! It is good to hear you are just like the rest of the artists out here! I have never been “sold” on purchasing the lightfast pencils from any brand. I use so many different brands and kinds of pencils. Prismacolor & Polychromous are my go to brands. I rarely use just pencils for an entire artwork. You are truly inspirational and so generous with your reviews and product recommendations. Thank you Lindsay!

    I appreciate reviews of the more expensive supplies, as I will definitely not buy the hobby-grade stuff, but I will think twice before buying art supplies to try a new medium. In such case I prefer buying a smaller, but versatile set of something I almost definitely like. Speaking of color pencils… From what I know about the kinds of artwork I am doing, Derwent Lightfast seem better suited for my needs;)

    I like these but for some reason i love and use the pablos more, especially on pastel paper. Usually we get a bit more precious with the fancy pencills like these luminance but the pablos i use and just get replacements and backups with no second thought. I enjoy your reviews so yes please review all the things.

    I enjoy all your reviews, but I especially enjoy the ones where you've found a budget product that performs as well as a legacy brand. That always ruffles a few feathers, but I'm not a professional artist so lightfastness isn't something I have to worry about.

    As always, your artwork is unbelievable! You master with every medium and make it look easy and you also explain processes in simple way.. you are also a gifted instructor 🤩
    You are my “go to “ for any type of review. I appreciate your honesty but it’s your kindness, humility and grace that really impressed me more than anything else.
    I’m so glad you were able to buy these and get such a great deal!! I only have the museum aquarelles but if they are anything like those…wow!! I have Inktense and love them both but have to say that CaranD’Ache has my no 1 spot!!
    I’m self taught (by books for years) until I found TH-cam and paper crafts after I retired.
    I’d only painted in oil and just started watercolor and was actually searching for tutorials when I found paper crafts! They seemed to overlap.
    I’m 63 and at my age I don’t feel anything is too precious. When time is limited you realize how important it is to just enjoy your supplies.
    I’ve never tried colored pencils although I do remember creating a bulletin board for Christmas (the 3 angels and one has fallen halo)…with some cheap pastels about 40 years ago….lol
    I drew it a lot larger than the Christmas card I was using as my example.
    It’s strange. I have never felt I could draw but this reminded me I made this without even thinking about it…My grandmother even asked me to do it on wood for her yard!!!
    To anyone else younger please don’t let anyone make you believe you aren’t “good” or “capable “…..I think our mindset is half the issue.
    Sorry, I am rambling…lol
    Congrats on the pencils!! You will appreciate them AND enjoy using. My goodness! You need lightfast with your talents..
    Thank you again for the BEST reviews..
    Blessings,
    Nancy Rolfe

    I love the bag of oranges! 😊
    I don't think this brand would be my cup of tea as I like a softer pencil but the colours are really vibrant, and I can see anyone who enjoys a harder pencil really enjoying these. 😊
    After the last 3 years, I am not at all precious about my art supplies and enjoy them with riotous abandon! 😄. The key to using my coloured pencils more often for me was ditching the tins and putting them in 'pop-up' canvas pencil cases as they're easier to just grab and go than hunting a tin out of a drawer. 😊

  • @antaresthetall
    @antaresthetall ปีที่แล้ว +7

    One thing I have to say about expensive supplies vs cheap ones is lightfastness. You mentioned this of course but my perspective is, if you're selling originals, it's much better to go the extra mile to pay for stuff that will last on paper. That way whoever buys it will have a product that will last a lifetime. If this isn't a concern and the artist is doing art for fun only, or starting out, it's very good to use whatever they're most comfortable with!
    I use Caran D'ache because I hope to sell my originals one day, but I also feel they're a wonderful product because of how they blend and don't break.

    • @MariaRevArt
      @MariaRevArt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree. If your art is just a hobby, which is absolutely fine, or you just sell prints and such, then the cheaper pencils are a great deal.

    • @Cascada200
      @Cascada200 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100%. I sell my original work, and able to sell for a good price because I know for a fact the lightfastness in the tools I use will last a lifetime, paper included.
      Customers have been very happy! I have a customer sent me a picture from a colored Pencil work I did 10 years ago, it looks exactly the same from the day I completed it ( she has it on her wall, and it does get exposed to fair amount of light)

  • @Via_Von

    Thank you for another great review Lindsay! Caran d'Ache Luminance are in my large lightfast storage binder because when I do artwork for hanging or gifting, that lightfastness matters. I love their blender pencil and yes it's still available at Dick Blicks! The Luminance line up of the three percentages in a number of the pigments series is perfect and I especially adore the Payne's Grey series!
    I've not tried the Derwent Lightfast but I've heard great things about them, which is awesome after the fiasco over the ProColour product.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Procolour is a non glare pencil designed for reproduction. It's not lightfast. I think many people didn't realize the intent of those. They are also very hard. They are beautiful on sanded paper tho. Some colors are lightfast if you want sharp, hard leads for details. I think some clear marketing for that would have been useful. They are not bad pencils but they are like Marmite, you love it or hate it 😆

    I just bought the portrait and the forty color luminance pencils. For my portrait work I am only going to use luminance or Derwent light-fast (I have both). I love Prismacolor but not for the drawings I am going to sell (I have the 150 and 120 set plus a pencil case of Prismacolors). I normally don't use just one brand of pencil to finish a drawing so my portrait drawing will be a combination of luminance and light-fast. Love your channel. In my opinion, you are an extremely talented artist.

    The 20 portrait colors and 76 set you have are all different colors. There are only 4 colors you need to buy open stock to get the complete set of 100. I bought the portrait set from Blick for around $50, to use with my complete set of polycromos. They work great together. But I think the set of 76 is pretty complete on it's own, the additional 24 have similar colors, even though there are no duplicates.

    Hi Lindsay! Enjoyable review and beautiful artwork! I’ve purchased a few of these pencils (about 20) and although I seem to collect lovely pencil sets including most of the expensive brands/types (Polychromos, Derwent Pro & Lightfast, CD Pablo) for some reason I haven’t been a fan of these pencils so I never pulled the trigger to buy the complete set… but I’m not really sure why. It could be that I don’t do fine art but I used to LOVE to color although I’ve gotten away from it doing other creative things. Mostly, I just wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE the Caran D’Ache Blender Bright and have used it with ALL BRANDS almost every time I color. I like that they now create it in its original stick form as well as to coordinate with the Luminous wood barrel. Maybe because I’m not a fine artist who burnishes with a light color pencil of the same brand I’m using and because I found the Blender Bright at the beginning of my coloring craze (2012) I never learned another way. The Blender Bright can make even cheap Crayola Twistable Pencils look fabulous!
    Thanks for all you do to encourage, educate, and inspire. Have a great day! 🙂

I would have gotten a bigger set but I had just spent almost $200 for the Caran deAche Supracolor2 water soluble the month before.They’re beautiful too, but not as lightfast. I have a small set of CA museum aquarelle which have a learning curve but the box is stunning.. just like yours. If I am going to invest in a new box it would be the Derwent colorsoft. I have a small set and they are so soft and blend easy.. or otherwise, if money allows I would go for one of the light-fast pencils (luminance or Derwent)

    I find that these pencils make a good middle of the road option in terms of the colours used - they don't go as light/pastel as the Derwent Lightfast (compare the CD light cobalt blue with D's light aqua for instance), nor do they go as dark (CD's sepia vs D's chocolate) but you do have the lighter more pastel shades that I found to be lacking in faber-castell's polychromos range. I paid £161 for my set of 76 as you have here, and £45 for the 20 set plus 4 extra pencils (when Cult Pens were doing a bundle offer of those) - compared to now when it'd be £206 and £54.
    I don't tend to use mine much because I shift towards and away from using coloured pencil depending on my mood. Most often they get used in colouring books (I know, but if I'm going to spend on these I'm going to use them, and I can always buy openstock replacements) but I've yet to do an actual piece with them. Maybe I should soon.

    Hey Lindsay, as someone who bought the wood box I would just like to point out that the "80 pencil" set of the wood box IS the 76 set. You don't get more colors in that box, they just add an extra white, black, and two colors I can't remember for sure off the top of my head...phthalo blue? and maybe a green? Not sure, and I'm not near the box right now to check. Idk if there's those extra pencils in the chipboard box, but I just want to clarify for anyone curious that the wood box has no bonus colors over the chipboard.
    For people who like collector's-level packaging, especially for top-tier supplies, the box is VERY nice. Just crazy expensive. If you're not the kind of person who is kind of obsessive about packaging (and you put the pencils in your own case or whatever anyway), it's probably not worth it. But the build quality is great if you are. I don't think there's any art supply manufacturer as on top of the packaging game as Caran D'ache.

    I had really unlucky experience with those pencils. Out of 20 i've bought 3 are defective. 2 will do, one is completely unusable. I could say it's really a bad luck and maybe i need to give them another chance, but i'm not motivated to risk again considering their cost. But their skin tones are really great and hard to replace. And texture is very comfortable to work with (i'm a fan of soft pencils).
    Considering not using expencive pencils and saving them for something global and important... I dunno, first you pay a fortune for a box of pencils, then you waste some of the pencil lead while sharpening it (depends how sharp you need it), then you don't use them, store them and wait for a suitable case. And in the end it turns out you payed insane money for something which is not used at all? I think stuff of such price needs to work and pay off what's spent on it without regrets, sketchbook or picture on the wall :D Especially since they are available piece by piece.

      I had an even worse experience with Derwent Lightfast. Multiple with horribly crooked cores, one has a giant knot in the wood and is so misprinted you can't read what it is, two so crooked you have to trim wood off the tip to use them and one warped so it won't lay flat on a table. Out of a 12 set and another 15 or so open stock bought from two different online stores. I've never gotten a bad Poly or Albrecht Durer.. ever... and I can't tell you how many of either of them I've bought over the years. I have a handful of open stock museum aquarelle plus the full set and they are all perfect.. I also own the full set plus a few of the supracolors all fine...so IDK about CAD... but I will never pay good money for another Lightfast that's for sure. I totally agree using what you buy. It's useless if you don't use it. If whatever you are doing makes you happy that is enough of a reason to use the good stuff. I use my museums in coloring books on a regular basis.

    @ lightfastness: I'm surprised that you set the highlights in the cake drawing with gel pens. I was told in shops that gel pens have extremely poor lightfastness. Are there special "artist lightfast gel pens"? I am struggling to find a solution for putting highlights onto dark areas of pen drawings. I've tried Holbein, Polychromos, Caran d'ache luminance and Prisma Colour who are fabulous, but because I change and correct a lot in the course of a drawing, the white pen has to "overcome" many layers. The resulting highlights are too pale and dim. Like in your video, I noticed that people switch to over pen types when they set highlights, but I couldn't make out what they used.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend a product by brush and pencil called titanium white and touch-up texture. You mix it together and paint it on. It makes an opaque white, archival highlight. That said if I am working in my sketchbook I use a pen. I've never had a problem. The only issue I've had with a white pen is color leeching up from the pencil but you can add another layer of pen. It could scrap off too but I haven't had it happen.coloed pens could fade when exposed to light but what would white fade to? Maybe it could yellow but I haven't had that happen.

I know that if I ever bought these, my husband would go through hell, being asked 20-80 times per day what he thinks the chances are that these might have been dropped at the store and whether they will break in the sharpener. I am obsessed with pencil core safety, really badly, so unless CD comes up with a no wood version of these, it is a 90% no from me. Besides, I really do not feel like I am missing anything with the brands that I use: Faber Castell, Derwent, Koh-i-Noor, Posca and Prismacolor, and then a bunch of budget stuff, I am not going to drive myself and everyone else insane with a 4 Euro a piece set of pencils. I have no issues investing a lot of money into watercolors or pastels, because I know that no matter how many times they get dropped in transport, I will get my money's worth out of them, but with color pencils I just have this thing, I do not do well with the inabilty to see through the wood, and the thought of something possibly being wrong with these super expensive pencils would follow me around day and night. 😅

      Higher end Caran d'Ache wood casings are pretty sturdy and the leads are fully glued inside the core, so there shouldn't be serious breakage. Oil based pencils do feel dryer than wax based pencils, and some of the colours can feel a bit scratchy.
