Dreher Island State Park - camping on the shore of South Carolin'a Lake Murray

- We spent a great weekend at Dreher Island State Park, or as the locals call it - Billy Dreher Island. The park is actually three islands and two campground that extend out into Lake Murray. The 50,000 acre lake was built in the depression and is famous for its fishing and water sports. Most campsites are right on the water and you could pull your boat right up to them.
Jonathan grew up on this lake, so we rode by his old house and stopped for lunch at J.R. Cash's Grill and Bar.

Can you recommend the best shaded SUV tent site with kayak access?
Most of the sites at Dreher Island are pretty shaded, and all of the tent sites are right on the water, except 8,9, and 10. But, I'm pretty sure that 11 thru 14 have rock rip rap along the shore, making kayak access a bit more challenging. 1, 2, and 3 are pretty nice tent sites that would be easy to go in and out of the water.
I truly enjoy your videos. My wife and I traveled to Dreher Island a couple months ago to just look around. We loved the focus of the campsites on the outside of the loop being on and facing the lake. However, it appeared they were rather tight whereas the sites on the inside seemed to be more roomy. Can’t wait until your next video!
The sites are a bit tight. It was very similar to Lake Hartwell State Park, and to a lesser extent, Lake Greenwood. I think it's kind of the nature of lake parks - they have to grade them up higher, so keep it narrow. We're heading to Calhoun Falls and Hamilton Branch this summer and will

There is an admission fee for day use of the park. Camping requires reservations and a fee. If you are a SC resident, you can go to your county public library and check out a state park pass, allowing you day use entry without paying the admission fee.
