Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe - Noel's HQ

  • Charlie Brooker takes a look at one of the strangest shows of 2008 where Noel Edmonds tries to cause a television based revolution. On Sky. The show is a combination of heart warming stories of charity and campaigning to fix Britain's problems, almost like a televised version of The Daily Mail.

I remember this show disturbing me back in 2008.
One of their "Bonkers Britain" segments was about how a council had brought in a law against ice cream vans playing their music for more than 30 seconds. This was obviously ridiculed to shreds, and then they interviewed someone from the council who said something like:
"No one is going to be standing there with a stopwatch, we just had to introduce a rule to stop the excessive use of music that was disturbing some neighborhoods, and we had to specify a time so that we could prosecute anyone if it came to it"
and you're like, yeah, that makes sense actually.

I was part of the godawful dancing idiots in Bonkers Britain. We were impoverished drama students who did it for free for the “chance to learn about filming in a real studio”, plus a confused old lady and a bloke with a dog. The dog bit the pantomime horse which was also my friend’s bottom. We got sandwiches though. I wouldn’t do it again tbh. We’ve all learnt our lesson.

    • @moisan0

We did. He floated around on a big haired cloud and didn’t speak to anyone. Cheggers on the other hand had a short segment trapped in a wheelie bin and couldn’t have been nicer, kinder and more gentlemanly to all us lowly minions. He checked we were all ok, asked if we had all we needed and were having a “good” time. He was a delight.

A nice little moment that is overlooked amongst this tsunami of Alan Partridgeism, is at 00:52. Noel does that thing which David Brent would often do, awkwardly pretending to have just engaged in banter with a random person.

If I were Noel Edmonds, the last thing I'd do is go on national TV and undermine the importance of strict Health & Safety practices. I can think of at least one very good example of why it's essential to have the highest level of bureaucracy in that particular feild.

Noel puzzles me. He displays a very changeable personality. I can never work him out. He can be so many different things. In Noel's HQ we see the full on lunatic side of him. I fucking hate Noel Edmonds just for this one show.
Nothing grinds my gears more than people who just vaguely assert that there's something wrong with today's society and then cite it with "because there's more rules and regulations." as if life is better when everyone has disregard for safety and health.
Look at his fucking ridiculous victim complex "The politicians, they've had their turn." Which politicians? I'm pretty sure it's the job of a politician to govern you, that's how it's always been, it's their fucking job. But oh no it's health and safety gone mad, the big bad scary government is taking away my nostalgic rose-tinted glasses.
Oh no, reasonable legislation for bagpipe buskers? There's no way that police can enforce this AND deal with crime. They should be devoting their time to stamping out serious crimes such as loitering and wearing a hooded top.
