- How do we in the art community deal with folks who are seeing things that are not actually there? Charlie tries to figure this problem out, using two metaphors. One makes a lot of sense; the other involves bear cubs suckling earlobes.
I feel the same way. I love the analogy to your painting. I may adopt it in conversations with beloved family members I can no longer stomach being with every time they've first baited, then snarked, "She's drank the kool-aid," when I've tried to reasoned with them what is really true. I don't get how my very intelligent siblings allowed themselves to be so hoodwinked. I love them and miss the old them I grew up with. Thank you. ❤
Thanks so much. And I’m sorry for what you must experience with family. Fortunately everybody I know who I’m related to is still in the realm of sanity.
Charlie ,,, I am so grateful to hear this from you ,,, As someone who follows your talks it reassures me ,,, And I suppose this would be the time to confess I am Canadian ,,, and that may dismiss my whole dissertation and participation in American business,,, that being said let me be clear this is not just an AMERICAN issue,,,
Your country witnessed the acts of riotous vandalism of an American ICONIC institution In your capital,,, We Canadians had a similar issue that lasted way longer and way to long with the FREEDOM TRUCKERS ,,, (i had to check twice to see if I spelled TRUCKERS correctly),,, Qanon has established a foothold here across our country ,,, connected and financed from both sides of our common boarder,,, that being a reality that will sadly be recorded into the history books ,,,
Your point about being polite and yet none accommodating i believe (scary word) to be a bit of a problem here in my little world as well ,,, People who up to this time that i held to some esteem who previously where regarded with respect and generally intelligent educated members of our community ,,, wow ,,, I mean WOW,,,
Yes I was floored by the revelations that transpired during and after the two acts of the mobs claiming to represent Democracy, Freedom, Truth, Honesty, and God Values,,,, WOW ,,, It does make me wonder how this all became acceptable and justifiable conduct in anyone's head ,,, I suppose it comes down to how I conduct myself in the face of all of this ,,, Trudge on with humble dignity kindness and compassion hope and love for all imperfect fellow humans ,,, though it just got a lot harder to do,,,
We do the best we can. Scary times.
Thoughtful, articulate and caring as always.
Thanks, Charlie. I am late to this one and forgot what the timing might indicate as a topic for a talk. I went with the literal approach and thought about ghosts and bear’s ears. Sadly, it still works as a good talk. I appreciate your discussion and thoughts as I continue to be dismayed and, well, another election is coming. I am lucky that most of my art peers feel as I do, but there have been a few shocks. And, truth be told, I did see the little girl when you pointed it out. I enjoy your art talks and critiques!
Well put Charlie. We all need to reflect and ask ourselves what kind of world do we want to live in.
Just for the record, I did not see the little girl.
Gary - Whew! Thank goodness. Thanks for watching.
Well said. Thanks. On plein air critique. My plein air work is extremely personal. I just mainly do it for myself. If I’m happy doing it-I’m happy with the results. I sometimes bring them to my art class. But not much. People start pointing at tiny elements or I should have done this or that. Blah blah. Most have never stood outside in the moment and made all these decisions in real time of constantly changing light. The joy or frustration felt. The sounds around me. These people ( and “art teachers” seem to be the worst) are simply soul suckers. Lol. They drag me out of that moment and memory. Plein air is hard. But why I love it. Some are good. Many suck. But the challenge carries me thru the days-especially now. So screw them. 😊. Enjoying your videos very much.
Thanks much, Junk Girl. Paint on!
Oh Great Leader! I've serendipitously landed on your channel today...and what a blessing to discover that I too am a rebel! Of my family, I am one of three members who are aligned with your views...the remainder, all 29 of them are extremists of the conservative ilk. Being conservative is not the issue. In 2015 I was asked what I thought of Trump and I commented that I thought he would possibly be known in history as the worst president we ever had. The reaction fron my family was as if I had spat in their faces and told them there was no God! It's been a strained relationship ever since. So with the recent events, instead of saying ,"I told you so", I kill them with love and never discuss politics...often this means hanging up the phone prematurely, but it keeps the peace. I get what you've said here. You're not alone.

Interesting to be viewing this in Dec 2024 when denialism and revisionism have had almost 4 years to fade…. My past self would never have predicted a future in which not only are denialism and revisionism stronger than ever, but the country has again made the decision to re-anoint Trump as ‘leader’. The polarization of the country is beyond ordinary discourse about political differences. I cannot and will not attempt to find common ground with those who support Trump’s agenda (project 2025, isolationism, protectionism, mass tariffs, mass deportations etc) or who abdicated making a moral decision in favor of perceived economic benefits. I cannot only hope that our country recovers more quickly from this than it did the civil war - where it could be argued it took 100 years: blacks were given the right to vote in 1965.
Dark days ahead, I fear.
Well said! Short and sweet
Thank you M San.
I'm Canadian, so at this point grateful if nothing else. And I did my best to stay completely disengaged with any of the recent events that are so concerning.
But even still, you managed to make your point clear, without being offensive, or taking direct shots at people. Politely, would be a good way to describe it.
And summing it all up with a bit of humour.
Are you sure you're not actually Canadian? Or do you just live really close to the border?
Either way, I am a subscriber for as long as you do these videos.
I may even help feed your cats in the future.
Well done Charlie
I live in Vermont, so we are basically an adjunct Canadian province, though we don’t have to say things in French. In actuality, my dad’s dad’s side of the family - the preachers - did come down from Ontario in the late 19th century.
From the heart, honest and absolutely true. Thank you for this, Charlie.
Thank you, Don. I appreciate your watching.
Very brave of you...I have a friend (Q follower) that is a collector of fine art but has never purchased one of my paintings. Why? Because of my political views, are my feelings hurt? NOPE! No amount of money will I put my name in his house..PERIOD
Thanks for watching, RT! I have a lovely Trumpy friend to whom I happily sell art. I just give the proceeds to various progressive causes. To that person's credit, I have told them I do so, and they say that what I do with the money is my business.
🎩 Thank You. Intelligent and eloquent point of view, as always.
Thank you, Margaret.
Thank you, Charlie. The Sociopath in Chief has many ( and more than we know) people who echo and promote the untruths that folks want to believe. It’s going to be mostly impossible to carry on friendships with people who espouse those beliefs. Looking forward to your next Reasonably Fine Art Talk!
These are tough times. Take good care, Susan.
I am a follower of a podcast called You Are Not So Smart, he has put together some episodes about conspiracy theories and why people go there. This information is based on science and psychology research. But like you some art people in our little town are gone from being on the conservative right to full ultra right. All I can do is say hello and keep walking when we meet at plein air paint outs.
Since I am certainly not so smart, that podcast sounds right up my alley. I'll seek it out.
Thank you for your frank, heartful, and authentic thoughts, Charlie. Much welcome and appreciated. xo
Thank YOU, Andy.
I am Canadian truly amazed at American politics. We had a horrible tragedy in our Capital a few years back when a mad man attract our parliament, the security had trouble stopping him as they were not armed. Who would attack our parliament it was shocking. What the heck happened to the American capital ? I do hope you find peace. Oh by the way we had a 21year old cat who had a teddy bear god help you if you touched it. I do understand a bear can have an attachment they stay with mommy for a year naturally !
As John Prine said, "It's a big old goofy world."
Very well said! You have expressed my thoughts completely. We are living in alternative times. Like you, I don't know how to unring the bell. I just can't understand art friends and family members that have fallen into the rabbit hole of misinformation and fantasy. Thank you for taking a stand for reality and facts!

Thanks for your kind words, Lori. These are tough times.
