    At a museum display of Klee's work, I had the closest thing to Stendhal syndrome I'll probably ever experience. What's wild was how tiny the canvases were: it didn't matter. They might as well have been the gigantic El Greco I saw in Chicago that made me tremble. 😂✨💖
    My Mom said I reacted to art from infancy. Sometimes I have to cover my eyes because the beauty of their paintings is that overwhelming. Thank you very much for a look at PK's life & genius.

    Klee was sooooo original that I think he helped redefine art. An interesting artist I knew named Terry O'shea said, 'Art is the process of redefining itself'. Art has a kind of life of its own.
    When I was young I used to get ideas for a painting. I would completely do a painting from a mental image. Later I did landscapes trying to capture the scene in front of me. More recently I've taken to decorating a surface with color. That last direction my took of decorating a surface was the most fun and the results were very pleasing. Too bad for me my paintings don't sell often and when they do it's for $50 give or take $10. But I paint only for myself. I did my first painting in water color about 64 years ago, and my first oil painting nearly 60 years ago. The winner is the one who never stops.

      @@ArtHistorySchooland so little known among people who would just enjoy his work so much!! He was one of my artist father's favorites, so I was blessed to learn about him very young. I actually got to see Picture Album up close in Phoenix at a special exhibition about the roots of abstract expressionism some years ago. I couldn't stop looking at it, my eyes just traveling over it and over it. ❤ Edit: it wasn't Picture Album. Off to search out the name of the correct painting!

    Excellent video, thank you so much for your work. A suggestion if you are open to them…at times your presence on screen is a slight distraction from the paintings and it would be helpful to see the pieces on their own to really have a chance to take them in. Great! I subbed. I love Paul Klee. And Kandinsky. I took 2 horrible beginning art classes in college. Arrogant jerk Jr. College teachers. However I took an avant-garde art class in University by a unique man named Charles F. CHARLES. I did a presentation on the artwork of the sczhoprenic patients of Carl Jung. Professor Charles asked me " OK, what does this painting mean?" My reply was " Oh, I don't know, perhaps the ascension of the soul". Then the Professor was stunned. He asked me before the class, " What's your major?" I told him " Psychology ". Then he very sincerely and thoughtfully relied " I believe you should be teaching art history in Graduate School ". I was blown away. But I must tell you that Professor Charles had such an iconoclastic approach to art history that he revolutionized my approach to being a Jazz Pianist. By the way Charles F. Charles taught for many years at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville Florida.

    How did it come about that Macke and Marc died in the fighting if they were artists too? Were they not subject to the same law that kept Klee safe?

    • @ArtHistorySchool
      @ArtHistorySchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume because he although he was recognised as German in Switzerland where he was born because his father was German, he was actually Swiss by birth. So it may be the German forces would have called up ethnic Germans first, Marc and Macke were born in Germany. The law wasn't in force at the beginning of the war as far as I know.

    It is interesting when I watch videos like this it takes me back to when I discovered the artist when in school. I realize now that one book I read by Paul Klee heavily influenced my own work and even the course I took in my life.
    I don’t remember the whole quote but he said something about leaving art school and learning painting by digging potatoes. I have therefore viewed every life experience as artistic inspiration. I decided to do landscapes recently, after watching lots of Bob Ross, and I now realize my landscapes are more subconsciously inspired by Paul Klee.

    I’ve always loved Klee; his works have a calming, curious, childlike quality for me. And speaking of which, to those who claim “Hah, my 6 year old could paint that”, the immense scientific concepts this artist carried in his head certainly defies the above statement regarding his works as ‘child’s play’ 😉

    I never saw a Paul Klee piece I didn't like. Hard, if not impossible to think of another great artist that I could make the same claim. Maybe David Smith...

  •  ปีที่แล้ว

    The Degenerate Art Exhibition was extremely successful. The Nazis might have wanted to mock it, but I suspect the German population at large didn't think of it badly. Otherwise they wouldn't have attended...?
    About Paul Klee... he's one of the few early 20th Century artists who I like as a person as well as an artist. He had a quiet normal life and made great art without hurting anybody. That's amazing. I feel like the awful-human-being-but-genius stereotype is too hyped up and overpraised.

    • @ArtHistorySchool
      @ArtHistorySchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think people attended more from curiosity than anything else. The propaganda was intense with paintings by monkeys and those from mental institutions displayed alongside those by the big names of modern art. The implications were spelled out for those who didn't 'see the connection'.

  • @johnlawrence2757
    @johnlawrence2757 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ArtHistorySchool  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are fully entitled to your opinion, although it's not one i share. There's a good reason why Klee's work adawns the walls of some of the world's great art galleries and your grand children's artwork takes pride of place just on your walls.

    Great channel. Request: please reflect on recent events surrounding youtube attribution of content, and consider listing your sources in the description, and make the distinctions between quotation and summary and personal knowledge clearer in the video itself. People need to be able to figure out what is from a book, what is your own reading of data you have acquired over your career, and what is more casual research. Usually this won't matter much, but when it does, oh boy it really does. Thank you for considering this.

  • @starkr111

    Never could get interested in Klee’s work. Amazing artist without a doubt but his work is highly forgettable. Why? I don’t know if I ever figured out why but I do know that he was no one’s favorite artist when I was in art school. In fact, his name was barely mentioned and his work was less studied. Later on in grad school his name came up, of course, but I always felt he was mentioned more out of unstated obligation than in genuine appreciation. Damned if I know why. Superb painter but not a well liked one. Curious.

    • @ArtHistorySchool
      @ArtHistorySchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It maybe because like similar artists his work looks curiously childlike and simplistic, but is in fact very sophisticated and complex. His use of colour is sublime.

    One of the most magical artists of the twentieth century, with a childlike purity of outlook and a disarming air of simplicity in realization that belies a profound intellectual commitment to his vocation. This serves as an excellent introduction to the man and his legacy.

    One of my favourite artists.
    Funny that he was such a brilliant colourist and yet started out having no idea about colour at all. In this way he is similar to Van Gogh. It's almost as if artists have to master drawing and chiaroscuro and design first before they master colour.

      The sound is fine as far as I'm aware. No one else has mentioned it and it's had about 7000 views so far.
