At a museum display of Klee's work, I had the closest thing to Stendhal syndrome I'll probably ever experience. What's wild was how tiny the canvases were: it didn't matter. They might as well have been the gigantic El Greco I saw in Chicago that made me tremble. 😂✨💖 My Mom said I reacted to art from infancy. Sometimes I have to cover my eyes because the beauty of their paintings is that overwhelming. Thank you very much for a look at PK's life & genius.
Klee was sooooo original that I think he helped redefine art. An interesting artist I knew named Terry O'shea said, 'Art is the process of redefining itself'. Art has a kind of life of its own. When I was young I used to get ideas for a painting. I would completely do a painting from a mental image. Later I did landscapes trying to capture the scene in front of me. More recently I've taken to decorating a surface with color. That last direction my took of decorating a surface was the most fun and the results were very pleasing. Too bad for me my paintings don't sell often and when they do it's for $50 give or take $10. But I paint only for myself. I did my first painting in water color about 64 years ago, and my first oil painting nearly 60 years ago. The winner is the one who never stops.
Klee is a painter whose art makes you gasp with astonished pleasure every time a new painting appears. Color, playfulness, above all the gift of translating imagination directly into its visual equivalent. I enjoyed this video.
I always had a great deep appreciation for Paul Klee. But thanks to you I learnt more about his life and saw paintings I have never seen before. One of the last paintings with the white skull is so expressive and simple yet holds a lot of meanings and power. Thank you
Thank-you for the very informative history of Paul Klee. There was so much art and information I will watch it again. What a great start to the day. FANTASTIC!!
Thank you very much for these lectures and their clarity. I'm going to focus on one artist every six months-Klee first-- and learn about him/her/it. Thank you so much.
Klee has long been my "favorite" painter, but I only knew bits and pieces of his life and career. Short as it was, your lesson here pulled a lot together.
@@ArtHistorySchooland so little known among people who would just enjoy his work so much!! He was one of my artist father's favorites, so I was blessed to learn about him very young. I actually got to see Picture Album up close in Phoenix at a special exhibition about the roots of abstract expressionism some years ago. I couldn't stop looking at it, my eyes just traveling over it and over it. ❤ Edit: it wasn't Picture Album. Off to search out the name of the correct painting!
This is fantastic! I knew little about Paul Klee, but discovered through this video that was a prolific painter and I have fallen in love with several of those included here. Many thanks - and I am now a subscriber!
Thanks so much for this truly inspirational video. I've been a fan of Paul Klee for years, he never ceases to amaze me and motivates me in my own artistic journey! 😊
Brilliant! I will watch this again and again to see the plethora of paintings used to illustrate Paul's excellent talk. and take in all this detail. Thanks again.
So interesting. Always love Klee's work but so many pieces Id never seen before. Seems to be have also been hugely influential. Keith Haring springs to mind. It's the delicacy of his colour work and carefully crafted sense of form and play that I so appreciate. Thankyou so much.
Another excellent video about a very gifted artist, who has often been overlooked. Thank u very much, Mr Priestly! What a comprehensive and interesting presentation. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Paul Klee is one of my favourite artists and he contributed so much to the art world and Bauhaus!
Great! I subbed. I love Paul Klee. And Kandinsky. I took 2 horrible beginning art classes in college. Arrogant jerk Jr. College teachers. However I took an avant-garde art class in University by a unique man named Charles F. CHARLES. I did a presentation on the artwork of the sczhoprenic patients of Carl Jung. Professor Charles asked me " OK, what does this painting mean?" My reply was " Oh, I don't know, perhaps the ascension of the soul". Then the Professor was stunned. He asked me before the class, " What's your major?" I told him " Psychology ". Then he very sincerely and thoughtfully relied " I believe you should be teaching art history in Graduate School ". I was blown away. But I must tell you that Professor Charles had such an iconoclastic approach to art history that he revolutionized my approach to being a Jazz Pianist. By the way Charles F. Charles taught for many years at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville Florida.
One of the most magical artists of the twentieth century, with a childlike purity of outlook and a disarming air of simplicity in realization that belies a profound intellectual commitment to his vocation. This serves as an excellent introduction to the man and his legacy.
Thanks Paul again ! Seems Klee found color in Tunis, makes me want to go there. I wonder if it's still the same. You always do a wonderful job and always look forward to the next one.
It is interesting when I watch videos like this it takes me back to when I discovered the artist when in school. I realize now that one book I read by Paul Klee heavily influenced my own work and even the course I took in my life. I don’t remember the whole quote but he said something about leaving art school and learning painting by digging potatoes. I have therefore viewed every life experience as artistic inspiration. I decided to do landscapes recently, after watching lots of Bob Ross, and I now realize my landscapes are more subconsciously inspired by Paul Klee.
Paul your efforts to create informative, entertaining content has -- once more -- succeeded brilliantly. Because you've packed so much into a short production, I happily watch them over and over, finding new bits each time.
Love Klee's work, Fish Magic hangs in my little art room. As much as the art, also love all his whimsical titles. All paintings should have good titles!
Excellent Documentary of an Artist who's works bring a smile to my face. It was fascinating to see the evolution and transformation of his different styles of painting. I was unfamiliar with his early works. Thanks
REALLY EXCELLENT - ADDS LOTS i didn’t ever know - though I’ve loved his art for decades. I have some of the same inclinations in my art making where I live in NYC.
Excellent video, thank you so much for your work. A suggestion if you are open to them…at times your presence on screen is a slight distraction from the paintings and it would be helpful to see the pieces on their own to really have a chance to take them in. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge, this channel is a wonderful educator.
I've always, since 1975 when I was 15, been influenced by Klee. I painted on burlap to be more like him while still in my teens. His twittering machine, a crank handle powered set of tweeting birds, was as much a premonition of social media as anything. His paintings are magic .
So much cultural and world history to process while also trying to view photos, art and read labels! I have to watch again, maybe 75% speed. And then maybe again after that. 😁 Thank you! Very interesting and some very wonderful art.
That studio stuffed with paintings is a revelation. So much work and dedication to making his art. Was he the artist who painted on the kitchen bench while being a house husband, or do I have him mixed up with someone else. Such cultured people with talent in so many areas.
