I had a few very casual interactions with Brian at races in Tucson and Phoenix. He was always a professional, polite and made time for everyone. Rest in Peace, BK.
He really was the "setup King" his mind for set up of a car is the best I've ever seen. Being a young black kid from LA in the 90's I got set up tips from him all the time at Big races. I was sponsored by Team Losi at the time running the stock division and not knowing nearly what he knows about tires and shock oil and everything else. His work ethic was legendary oh, one of those first to get there to the track last to leave kind of guys. It was definitely a pleasure getting to know him.
Thank you so much for making this video. Brian Kinwald is a true legend in our hobby. Back in the 90's you couldn't open a RC car mag without seeing his name or face and I remember wishing I could be like him.
I remember racing RC in the late 80’s as a kid - I knew what it was like to idolize and be jealous of someone at the same time LOL Brian Kinwald, the dudes contribution to RC is so damned underrated he was an absolute legend.
When I was getting into RC about 15 years ago Brian Kinwald, Matt Francis, etc. were always talked about. I've got a XXX Kinwald buggy and it's one of my favorite cars. Don't do much track time on it but I knock the dust off of it every so often. I really enjoyed this video. I love how Brian talks about just chopping tires up and trying combinations.
Def a legend i was lucky enough to witness the development of that tire and actually see Brian gluing the sections of tire together , that was ran i the new buggy at the time which was the losi xxx !! while i was still running the xx !!!! good times i miss MnM
It was nice to hear it out of Brian. Just read this in RCCAM, and it read exactly how he said it here. What an honor this interview must've been. You will cherish this forever. Thank you for sharing.🏎
I was fortunate enough to get to hang with Brian back in the day at MnM raceway. It was cool to see some of the stuff he was working on. I even got to see him help Jr develop the xxx. He was a class act. I didn't own a charger and let me use his chargers to charge my batteries all the time. I'm sure it was a pain in the ass for him but it was loads of fun hanging out and driving and learning as much as I could.
I went to SRS a few weeks ago. I was having a major "sh*t, it's Brian Kinwald" moment! Total pleasure to watch him drive. Precise and a great sportsman. Awesome.
Kinwald is the man. I've been following him since I was in my teens. Always admired him and wish I had the opportunity at that time to race competitively.
Brian needs an agent. He could be a HUGE asset to these companies, but he seems so ridiculously modest that (obviously without knowing at all, but it doesn't take imagination to take a guess...) he's not making the amount of money he SHOULD be from the companies that he's working with. Wish him the best and thanks for taking the time to get him on the show!
Agree. Drivers not worth much money. Most of the drivers income cannot afford a property. The thing is this hobby do not sell ticket even watching the world champ race
Brian kinwald is a total legend. I still run losi today because of him. I apply trinity and Novak stickers in his honor, if I had some kinwald graphics they would be on there too. He was was my hero and he is dearly missed within the rc community
Man I remember him in magazines while I was in high school. I could only imagine what it would been like in the heyday of RC competition. Sad to hear he left the world so soon
I just stumbled across this video by chance this guy was my hero growing up my entire life until I was an adult in my early twenties when I quit racing RC cars every magazine I had there is this picture of this kid on every issue damn near every page truly saddens me to hear he's gone
Wow. When I was a youngster my grandma got me a subscription to 3 different rc magazines and he was in almost every issue of all 3. I idolized the guy. I just found out from the comments below that he's passed away now. So sad. R.I.P.
I remember seeing Brian drive one day when I went to a indoor track me and a friend tried to see what his secret was and it was somewhat impossible to be as dynamic as him his buggy jumped over stuff so perfect it was a no loss of speed or difference of speed over jumps so smooth that his lines were a practice of throttle control
Thanks Jason, I am very new to the hobby although I am in my mid 50s and have always had some type of rc car/truck. Just started racing at local tracks here in va and nc Been running tekno both sct and the 48.2. I just bought a almost new mp9e. Kyosho is winning a lot of races at the tracks that I run and wanted to try one. Thanks again for the great videos, they have taught me lot along the way. Keep making those great clips. Thanks again Phillip
Brian is a local at my home track and I had the chance to talk with him and he has got to be the most down to earth pro and is so easy to talk to. I would be stoked to make half as big of an impact as he has made in this hobby
Wow that brings back some memories ! I use to race at M&M back in it hay day and Brian was there all the time. He helped me out a few times total nice guy and good person. Miss that place, the owner was such a cool guy as well.
I met him one time when i was a kid, i met him at Rosemont Horizon Train and Hobby Show...... when they had a little mini track in there seen him do a demonstration and met him shook his hand ,,, Im 35 now and will never forget it .>>>
Keep up the great videos! So cool to see you get amped up by the hobby the way I do! I live in the Dallas Texas area and we only have 1 track in a 2.5 hour radius, so I gave to get my racing fill via TH-cam. So great videos and keep them coming! Now just add some more 8th scale buggies/truggies electric/nitro... Thanks!
I started fixing up some of my RC cars which I haven't touched in many years. Out of nostalgia I went to look at some of my RC car action magazines from the early 2000's. That being said, it's so weird for me to see Brian driving for Associated instead of Losi. I know he used to drive an original RC10, but when i got into the hobby, Losi, Trinity, and Kinwald were one entity.
Me too. I was probably 10 years old and broke, I shoveled snow for a week so I could get 610rv speed control for my rc10t that had bushings so I could run it on a track 40 min away with one battery pack lol meanwhile this guy was sponsored getting free matched sanyos and other gear! Whaaaaaaaah!
Why you got to call him little ShortCourseWorld? LOL! He made BK Bars at MnM Hobbies. It's the most important tire. We burned down Square Fuzzies and popped wheelies. We took it a step further and it was more dialed. Kinwald flipped Square Fuzzies inside out first. Then he went to taper pins and that is what he used. The the webbing was the inside out part of the tire. When he put sauce on them, the sauce ate the CA off the sections and they blew apart. Only a guy who has 1,000,000 pairs of tires to just do whatever to them. I had 10 pairs of Square Fuzzies for the month from Pro-Line, BK had 1,000 pairs when we were on Losi. Losi would buy us Pro-Line tires for certain tracks and races. We would scratch Pro-Line off the side of the tires. Kinwald has 50+ National Titles and he did it when you had to really drive good to win! Tebo has 17, Cavi 14 and Maifield 8. I'd say he was RC first SUPERSTAR driver. He's designed almost all of your favorite car parts, tires, cars, etc. Other than Gil Losi Jr, Cliff Lett, Brian is the only dude I have ever seen who could create parts from nothing on a napkin into a iFMAR World Championship.
I remember at the indoor nationals watching Brian flip a taper pin inside out and try it. The design was for bracing the rubber carcass, but the rubber compound works either way. They turned out to be more consistent, like magic. He was one of the best at looking for that extra little bit. Billy Easton is another who comes to mind. There are several who don't just accept whats available as their only option. Kinwald was the man for a long time, the battles between he and Mark Pavidas, along with Masami....wow.
Very cool. I am no racer but if you walked into a Hobby Store you saw his faces plastered on everything...guy is a legend. Curious though, why not 4WD, he is best known for 2WD.
He developed cars motors with trinity motors racing championship's the goat greatest of all time more kinwald please😃😃😃😃😃😃😃💪💪💪💪💪💪💪:-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
uhhhhh, he probably is a kidney patient from a very young age and because of that had growing issues... I am not 100 percent sure. I am kidney patient myself live isn't easy, surviving every day, and dedicated to do.
Sleestak his life threatened issues were internal organ failure congenital conditions that showed up during his bmx career he has had a lot of surgeries since he was a teenager which ended his career threatening his life it stunted his growth had medical conditions while winning world championships and nationals while undergoing surgeries and health issue flair ups since he was 12-13 yes old. He is blessed to be alive and he is a good person land of the lost👀👀👀👀👀👀
Daan Schuuring i have one kidney myself. RC is a great competative outlet for people of all types. Kinwald has shown pure professionalism in his difficult life.
R.I.P dirtinator a true legend
Such a legend. Gone too soon. I hope heaven has a dirt track
His mind was a tuning machine great loss to me and a lot of people
I had a few very casual interactions with Brian at races in Tucson and Phoenix. He was always a professional, polite and made time for everyone. Rest in Peace, BK.
He had these little strokes of genius...RIP to an absolute master of the RC world.
RIP Brian Kinwald 😢
Sad to hear.

This is legendary stories man make sure to tell that to anyone in the scene keep it alive thats so cool man
Yeah I saw him drive on road once and I was on the infield. Mind boggling how close he was to the barriers lap after lap.
RIP Brian, A great miss in rc.
Thank you so much for making this video. Brian Kinwald is a true legend in our hobby. Back in the 90's you couldn't open a RC car mag without seeing his name or face and I remember wishing I could be like him.

Let the dirtinater live on through our soul and veins !!!!!!
dirtantor!!! i loved reading rc car action and seeing a young guy winning. Rest easy BK

Probably the most modest, driven man in RC. Strength and devotion and you can make it to the top.
BK is the single reason why i start racing. awesome video jay. wow.
Def a legend i was lucky enough to witness the development of that tire and actually see Brian gluing the sections of tire together , that was ran i the new buggy at the time which was the losi xxx !! while i was still running the xx !!!! good times i miss MnM

Kinwald is the man. I've been following him since I was in my teens. Always admired him and wish I had the opportunity at that time to race competitively.
A true rc legend, his passion fueled rc development. The world and rc world are a lesser place without him...

THE MAN THE MYTH THE LEGEND!!! THE DIRTINATOR!!!!
Awesome video thanks for interviewing him, waiting for the cactus interview as well! thumbs up!
I hope you do more interviews with Brian. He's definitely a LEGEND ! I would like to hear about the worlds in Britain. Huge epic races there. THANKS
Man I remember him in magazines while I was in high school. I could only imagine what it would been like in the heyday of RC competition. Sad to hear he left the world so soon
Im new to racing, I haven't had a car since the early 1990’s, but I remember him from then, I didn't know he had passed until watching this video.
I just stumbled across this video by chance this guy was my hero growing up my entire life until I was an adult in my early twenties when I quit racing RC cars every magazine I had there is this picture of this kid on every issue damn near every page truly saddens me to hear he's gone
昔、日本の谷田部アリーナで自分が握手を求めて快くしてくれたことを覚えています、モーターもキンワルドモーターを愛用していました、今も元気で活躍しているのでしょうか?
Thanks for posting this Jason. Keep up the good work.
Very cool! Great interview dude

Used to race with them when I was a kid in the 90s at M&M hobbies in Corona California that was Good Times.😁
That was fantastic! Thanks!
