Wonderful movie - no violence, nudity, or foul language. A welcome relief to say the least. Excellent acting and screenplay as well! Thank you kindly for the upload.
This is my favorite movie with Gracie!! The energy between her and Monty Wooley is so special . It just goes to show that a movie can be made without sex and violence that depicts the transcendent love between a couple who lo v e and support each other just as they are!! ❤🎉
My mom was a housewife. A wonderful mom. I give my mom all the credit for my life and the fact she raised me with God given values. She gave me those values to pass on to my children. Her unselfishness is unfound today. That’s the problem in families. Can’t find ppl willing to give of their life for others especially their children. What a gift.
I had the same upbringing. My mom was amazingly dedicated. I look back at the things that she did and now I cannot even imagine how much work she put out for decades to take care of five children and her husband. We were constantly on the move. My father's job brought us to a move every year to two maybe three years at the most. She handled all of that as well as dealt with a physical ailment that she had. She was an amazing woman. I wish I had spent more time with her than I did.
Wow that was good. These old movies are so entertaining and they do it with out offending. Hollywood needs to review their formula. Thank you for the upload.
Excellent film. Not at all what I expected. Clever scrip .and the humour is gently surreal .Gracie fields gives a fine understated performance. A tonic!
What a delightful match. I just read in a letter my Father wrote in Europe while serving in the Army during WWII, that the men watched this movie So of course I had to see it, too!
This was an excellent movie and quite funny. The newspaper headlines before and during the trial were hilarious. 😂😂 The movies that Hollywood churns out these days just cannot hold a candle like excellent ones this one was.
Thank you for this delightful film, nothing disturbing, each word clear English, leaving one with a feeling of lightness , excllent acting ,this is what entertainment was all about .
Monty Woolley was a marvellous actor. His patrician and gentlemanly manner together with his velvet, polished voice, graced several films. A truly great actor who dominated the screen.
A charming and probably somewhat forgotten gem of a film. Adorable. Monty Wooley is forever fascinating on screen and is perfectly matched by Gracie Fields.
Absolutely LOVE the movies of the 30's, 40's and 50's and all the marvelous actors and actresses that make them what they are. Cannot stomach the movies seen today, so I am thankful to find these precious gems❤❤❤
You are sooooooooo right. I detest the movies of today. No grace...No charm.. No femininity or gentleman-liness. Thank God we can still tap into it all in the old movies....💋💋💋
Hello Tammy, I agree with you! Most especially the British films that, to me, perfected the subtle "eyes show a slight surprise" or "shoulders slump" and you know that there person is affected by what's just happened. The person may not even have their face towards the camera! It is TRUE ART! I'm grateful for these films. This is a gem that I'd not even heard of until 2 weeks ago! For 76 years this beauty has been hiding (at least for my life of 61 years) from repeatedly viewing!
Love, love, love (all) of Gracie Fields movies. I watched Molly & Me twice, and I would watch it again and again. She can sing, dance, and her comedic timing is perfect!
Wonderful "gentle", English-style movie...watched this a couple of times...very under rated. Great plot, excellent acting from all these wonderful character actors. A must see! 10 out of 10 stars
The glorious Gracie Fields who, in the 1930s, was the highest paid film star in the world, so popular was she with British audiences thanks to her marvelous comedy timing, endearing personality and beautiful singing voice. Only the briefest sound of that voice in this film, but a good, unusual script and great chemistry with Monty Woolley. It's a pity they only made one more film together, and that Gracie didn't make a lot more. And also Laird Cregar as the art dealer who died tragically going at 28.
What a delightful and clever little film. Just saw it for the first time ever. In fact I didn't know about Gracie Fields until this film. Very familiar with Monty Woolley, Gracie Fields, Una O'Connor, Laird Cregar, Alan Mowbray, and Melville Cooper from other works of art. Such a smart wife, how she complemented him. A gem worth watching with someone you love.
Eric Blore appeared in over eighty motion pictures. He began his acting career playing mostly military types and bluebloods, but it is portrayals of butlers, valets, and waiters that he is best remembered for.
these were the type of people my grandmother had as neighbours when i was a very small girl in the 1960's. I always loved visiting their house, full of art (painted by him), a wonderful garden they worked together that felt like fairyland whenever you came inside their gate. And music. They lived next door to a saw mill, but they created their own little bit of paradise anyway. Vale Reggie and Louise
Gracie Fields and Monty Woolley - two of the greatest stars of yesteryear together. Movies don't get any better than this - superb acting, wonderful characters and a marvellous story.
As an artist/painter I always look forward to films based on artists/painters. There are hardly any films based on art, painters, artists. Most are highly romanticized and inauthentic.. unreal... but this is so real in so many ways... Way ahead of time.. 1943!!
@animeshroypainter Look up an old 30's-40's movie with synopsis of a homely painter that falls in love with a con artist who turns the art into a done-by- this-gorgeous-woman cash cow and eventually, murder. The level of reaction to the quite odd style of art if even for a movie was most amusing.
❤️❤️❤️🎭one of all time Great Actors. Can watch this movie again and again. Great sense of humor and timing! Wish they could have made more movies like this.
Thankful for Monty Wooley and Gracie Fields, crispy dialogue, havey cavey plot twists and in the end the incontrovertible truth was out! Thank you for sharing!
It’s difficult to believe this is Gracie Fields. She’s certainly altered her accent and behaviour from the more famous films I’ve seen her in. It’s a revelation to see her in a different role. A proper actress!
The first time I saw Woolley in a movie was his role as the professor in a Bishop's wife with Cary Grant and Loretta Young. He turned a small part into a masterful role. I think Iwould have liked him in person. Just a fine way of carrying himself.
I've seen over 40,000 films so far and this is one I hold dear to my heart. I have stored it among others of similar quality in a safe place on a computer "stick" which I refresh every 2 years.Every plaudit it receives here and elsewhere is thoroughly deserved. There must be a special place in Heaven for actors and film makers of this calibre.🙏
A sweet and poignant comedy of errors. Well acted, well written, and enjoyable. Thank you for finding and sharing another gem with us, Chris. Sincerely, Laura-Lee
I'm told by some that I might have a hearing problem as I have to watch most modern dramas/films with subtitles. So, it's odd how I can hear and understand films made decades ago without a problem! It's called diction, and it's what happens when you have real actors, theatre trained and no background music/noise!
I can't thank you enough for uploading this gem. I only have a very worn out VHS copy taped off TV and VCRs won't be around forever. Thanks to you l can enjoy it here. Lots of love from Canada 🇨🇦💓🍿🎥
I’ve seen this awesome old classic MENY years ago , and I enjoyed it again today as if it were the first , thank you for sharing you wonderful classics , it’s been a terrific get watching them takes you away from this time and date to a better different in life time !
@Chris Rogers Thank you very much for sharing :) Such a charming and well-written story :) The cast is superb. I love Gracie Fields and Monty Woolley to bits :)
Thank you, @Chris Rogers, for this film. I enjoyed it very much, particularly the first five minutes with Mr. Leek (too bad, he had to leave us so soon in order to make the basic plot work) and later the court room scenes with the miming of the judge and the lawyers. But why only praise Whoolley, Whoolley, Wholley, Fields, Fields, Fields ad nauseam? Here is to the unsung hero Laird Cregar (1914-1944 (sic)), who played the art dealer Clive Oxford in this here film. In 1942, he was the very impressive (treacherous) go-between in THIS GUN FOR HIRE, one of the best classic films noirs ever, with Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. The script was based on Graham Greene's novel A GUN FOR SALE (1936). Despite his beard(s) here, I recognized Laird Cregar immediately, first by his voice and later even by his face. So sad he died at the age of 30.
"I submit to your lordship" comes out "I smell your lunches" - Bwahaha, LOVE this movie with the subtitles, just in case I miss something. Picking up the Brits acting in early films is the finest ear exercise ever. Another great Gracie Fields and Monty Woolley fest! Big fan, and more, more, more of this ilk.
Brilliantly rendered by the actors this Arnold Bennett gem Buried alive is as good as Alec Guiness The Card. British film maķing at its best. Thank you so much.
Thank you for this amazing gift I grew up in the 60’s and me and my mom always watched these classics together I miss her so much and you have given me a gift of this amazing movie I feel she’s watching it with me I don’t remember this one so it’s a treat for me just wish she were with me to watch even though she probably watched it without me lol thank you so much 💜💜
Brenda, this was one of my mother's favorite movies but I didn't remember the name. She was a huge Anglophile, particularly of this sort of wry humor. I too felt akin to my mother again while enjoying this.
Enjoyed. I have seen these 2 together in another movie. There is good chemistry between them. They treat each other with respect and affection. The plot was well played out
Surprised this gem hasn't more views. Excellent film with excellent players. Always love Monty Woolley and Una O'connor. Have seen Gracie Fields in only one other film and think I wouldn't mind seeing more of her. Thanks, Chris Rogers, for this most appreciated upload. 6/2018
Thank you for the upload. Enjoying these wonderful classic Movies. Grew up watching these and learning all the trivia that went with them in my youth during the 70s on TV in San Diego County from a guy everyday at 3 named Bob Dale. He even played silent films every once in awhile. What you learned about the actors and actresses how they made the movies, what the studios were like, was truly informative and not gossip as it is today. He showed us how before color atmospheric painted shadowing was important. How people like Laurel and Hardy created their tricks and how dangerous they were unlike jackass. There was so much that he imparted then I'm sure there were many kids who went on later in life to become part of the movie industry because of what he taught. I know that I won pretty much any trivia game that included the movies cinema photography film stars Etc. It was sad as he got older that they started to cut his showdown from five days a week to only a couple days a week and didn't bring on someone younger to replace him. the community rallied around him because we really liked what he did and mothers we relied on him as something to do in the afternoon with their children that was educational they could trust and wasn't a stupid cartoon show but the television industry changed and they felt showing these old movies wasn't important anymore even though by then he even included colored movies. instead you got reruns of the 1970s laugh tracks. Bob was also the weatherman for the television station and what's funny is when they replaced him with someone younger we were never able to trust the weather again as well as we had been able to trust him.
I would rather watch these old charming movies than anything put-out today!
100 percent truth
That is what I do I love old black and white movies of the 1930s and 1940s
Agreed!
SUPERB!!!...DELIGHTFUL!!!...Absolutely NOTHING! comparable today!...(btw, I'm 70 yrs)...THANKYOU!!!...Enjoyed IMMENSELY!!!...Will view again!...(and again!)...👍😊

I love Monty Woolley - enjoy this film very much.
Just LOVE this movie
I never thought I'd live to see the day I find a movie with Monty Woolley and Franklin Pangborn both talking together.
Wonderful movie - no violence, nudity, or foul language. A welcome relief to say the least. Excellent acting and screenplay as well! Thank you kindly for the upload.
Couldn’t agree more.
And no CGI!!! Saw this years ago - most enjoyable...😸😸😸
"Understatement!"... but I cannot think of anything more accurate.
of course, it was 1943

Totally agree! People are self centered, nowadays, and think theres no "identity" or "reward" in sacrificing for family and home!
God has truly blessed you. ❤
I had the worst mother, but it made me a better one
What a beautiful tribute to your mom. Blessings
Wow that was good. These old movies are so entertaining and they do it with out offending. Hollywood needs to review their formula. Thank you for the upload.
It's not just Hollywood. It's society as a whole. Sadly though, i think it's too late.
One of my favorites of both the main actors..such a pleasure to see them both married to each other in this❤
Less than 5 minutes in and I'm hooked on watching real actors🎉
Excellent film. Not at all what I expected. Clever scrip .and the humour is gently surreal .Gracie fields gives a fine understated performance. A tonic!
Got to be one of the best Gracie Fields films.
It was Gracie's favourite films of all the ones she made, thanks for the lovely comment.

Monty Woolley was such a very good actor, so handsome, distinguished and funny.
What a great premise for a film. Truly original! Glad to have seen it.
What a magnificent farce! Well played and scripted. Good music from the period, too. Loved it!
It is a rare thing to not fast forward a TH-cam movie. This is one of those special films. The performances are brilliant

interesting thank you
Highest paid in the world? IMDB says in Britain.
😂. She had a voice like a strangled corncrake.
What a delightful and clever little film. Just saw it for the first time ever. In fact I didn't know about Gracie Fields until this film. I looooooove anything with Monty in it but I’ve got to say I am giggling at his man servant. Hilarious lines and brilliant execution.
His manservant is the brilliant & very funny Eric Blore! Blore was in some of the Astaire/ Rogers films too. ❤
Eric Blore appeared in over eighty motion pictures. He began his acting career playing mostly military types and bluebloods, but it is portrayals of butlers, valets, and waiters that he is best remembered for.
