You’re welcome! Enjoy your new camera! If there are any other things about it confusing to you, feel free to let me know and I’ll try to add it into a future video.
You’re welcome! I completely agree that this camera is a little tricky to get nailed down. Between the film sim dial and the lack of programmable controls, it’s been a bit of a learning curve. I’m planning to do a video sharing my exact settings/setup soon because I’m pretty happy with how I’ve got it set up.
Thank you so much for making this video. It’s well-explained and easy to followed. I just got my xm5 weeks ago and was looking for a video about adjusting the film recipe. 👍 keep it up for the next one.
Hey, great video! Slight issue for me- after I finish entering my recipe and I go back into the menu to click 'save the changes', the option is greyed out. How do I overcome this?
Yes, that's actually one of the next videos I'm planning to make - my full review is likely coming out next, and then I'll be sharing how I have all of my custom function buttons mapped and what settings I use.
Destin, I do however have a question regarding the saving of the custom film simulation recipe. For unknown reasons, my 'SAVE THE CHANGES' option is not available for selection (11.02 - on the video timeline). This prevents the saving of the recipe. Would you have an idea why this is occurring? Thank you in advance.
I’ve never seen that happen before on any of my Fuji cameras. The only time I’ve ever seen that option grayed out is when no changes had been made and therefore there were none to save. I wish I had an answer for you.
@ hi nepo, to be honest I rewatched destins video a few times over. In doing so I realised I was doing something incorrect just before saving the recipe. From memory I was 'going back' a step to many in the menu. Took me a few tries, but it eventually worked. Sorry i can't be of better help.
Hi Destin, Another question you may be able to assist with. I have now included a few custom recipes on my X-M5. However, the pictures are extremely over-exposed. With your experience, what would you recommend I change to overcome this? Appreciate your help. Ps. I have the ‘Shooting Mode’ on ‘Manual’ as the ‘Auto’ mode does not allow one to set specific recipe settings.
Hello! You’ll need to learn how to manually control the exposure triangle to shoot in manual mode - the camera won’t make any adjustments to your shutter speed, aperture, or iso for you if it’s set to manual. There are tons of videos on TH-cam that are great at teaching these things, but it’s a complicated topic that takes time and practice to master. In the mean time if you’d like the camera to control your exposure for you while using custom film recipes, I’d recommend setting the shooting mode to “program” which will turn full control of the exposure triangle over to the camera while allowing you to use custom recipes. You’ll then just want to use exposure compensation to adjust the brightness of your image.
Hey I am planning to get an Fuji X-m5 really soon... But I have a question in mind.. I have a tamron ef 70-300mm f/4 lens and a canon 50mm f 1.8 Can I use them on the x-m5 with adapter?
If you like the form factor of your X-T20 or you use the viewfinder a lot, then get the X-T30ii. If you think you can live with only a rear lcd screen and you want the smallest possible form factor, the X-M5 is a great option. If it was my primary camera I’d want the X-T30ii for the viewfinder, but as a secondary camera the X-M5 is great for me.
@ thanks for the suggestion! I rarely use the viewfinder of my xt20 so I kind of want the xm5 and also because it has 20 film simulations but I’m seeing a lot of reviews that xm5 is more for vlogging than photography so I’m having second thoughts because I never ever vlog 😅
@ it’s been working great for still photography for me! I made a full review of the x-m5 that may help you out more if you haven’t seen it. Remember that with the x-m5 being so new and in short supply, if you get your hands on one and don’t like it you can almost certainly sell it without losing money.
Hi, I want to ask if the film recipe can only be installed in custom photo mode? I want to install the film recipe in C4 video mode, but the option can't be clicked. Thank you.
You can definitely apply film recipes to video. You may have some setting engaged that disables them: for example, if you’re shooting in f-log you won’t be able to apply film sims/recipes.
Hey, i've a problem, i can't seem to change the exposure when I shoot with my film recipes ? but I can change it when I'm in auto mode, how to resolve this issue ?
I just want to go into the menu, go to film simulation on the menu, pick one of the film simulation options (click OK), and start shooting. Is that possible?
If you want to use one of the factory installed simulations then the easiest way to access them is to just use the film simulation dial. If you really prefer to menu dive to choose between them, you’ll need to make sure the film simulation dial is in the “C” mode, which allows you to then control them from the menu system.
@@adventureaheadphoto Thanks man. I' rented an X-H2, so there's no film simulation dial. Apparently there's 2 ways to set them up. I can go straight to film simulation in the Q menu and make sure to save current settings. Or scroll way down to edit/save custom setting and assign whatever film simulation I want to C1, C2,... C7.
An annoying issue I can't seem to figure out is after you edit a custom name between C1- C4. It doesn't display the anywhere. Not even in the Q menu like in other Fuji Systems. There's no way to check the unless u go back to edit the name of the profile?!? Am I missing something within the menu or a display setting?
I've noticed the same. I really wish that the name would pop up on the Q menu or just on the LCD as you scroll between them. I'd bet this could be a firmware update if we can get their attention.
@@adventureaheadphoto I got it. Thanks for your response. Can you make a tutorial video with slow shutter speed pictures with those film recipes? Recently, I've been very curious about slow shutter shots, and I bought this camera.
Hey sorry! Thought I’d responded already! The camera must be in movie mode on the mode dial. Then go to the movie settings menu -> movie settings list -> scroll to the bottom option for f-log/hog recording or to select a film simulation. I’m lazy and shoot all of my videos in Eterna.
Hey there! I skipped it because I don't use the Q menu in relation to custom recipes at all on this camera. Because the custom settings banks are hardwired into a dial, there is no option that I'm aware of to switch between them using the Q menu like there was on my X100V. If you're talking about putting the various individual settings like highlight tone, clarity, etc there for easy access - I simply don't change them often enough for it to matter. I install custom recipes on the camera and run with them for a while, not tending to make changes on the fly. With the lack of dedicated external controls on this tiny camera, my Q menu is largely filled with more important (to me) settings like metering mode, self timer, white balance, AF modes/areas, face/subject detection, etc. I'm going to me making a video soon sharing my entire setup on the X-M5, and I'm certainly open to suggestions as I'm sure there are ways I could be doing things more efficiently.
As someone that just got their first ever fujfilm - thank you so much this is so so helpful!!!!
This is so useful, just got my first Fujifilm camera and was confused on the custom recipes dials. thank you!
You’re welcome! Enjoy your new camera!

Thank you! It’s definitely a fun camera! Let me know if you have any questions I can try to answer in my next video(s).
Beautiful, i just bought the XM5, what a nice camera, thx for all the info
Enjoy it! I’m loving mine!
Great video, Sir! Very well explained.
Thank you for the kind words!
Just preordered mine (I should have done it two weeks ago!). It will make a great companion to my Sony A7RV!
Enjoy!

@@adventureaheadphoto having the same issue. Any troubleshooting for this?

Thankyou for the video! i was wondering do you edit the higlight, shadow, color, etc too? how do you do it in xm5?
I only edit them in camera as I showed in the video - all of my editing after that is done in adobe lightroom on my laptop.
@ Thankyou mate
hey nice video, can i use/change film recipes after taking the shots ?
No, you can’t change film *recipes* after taking a shot.
If you shoot in raw and edit in Lightroom, you can apply film *simulations* in post.
