The History of Grand Theft Auto

Of all the video game series that have made their mark on the industry, few have elicited as many disparate reactions as Grand Theft Auto. To some, the series is the apex of interactive media; the ultimate expression of virtual freedom, and the cathartic chaos that this freedom can result in. To others, it’s one of the biggest smoking guns behind all of the misanthropy and violence present in today’s youth, in addition to being a vile and artless product in its own right.
If there’s one aspect that nearly everyone agrees on, it’s that Grand Theft Auto is among the most successful properties in the history of its medium. In the two decades that it’s graced consoles, handhelds and PCs, the open world series has remained a fixture on most sales charts, with its most recent entry, Grand Theft Auto V, having generated more revenue by itself than most franchises manage over their entire lifetime.
To most gamers today, this thoroughness with which the series currently dominates the industry is as normal as Mario is Italian. Yet to those that have been paying attention to it since its inception, it’s still a mighty impressive feat. For up until the late 2000s, a day didn’t seem to go by where the series wasn’t embroiled in some sort of scandal created by its most egregious detractors - or its very own developers.
This is the history of Grand Theft Auto.

the truth tho, modern games are waaaay more complex to make, requires way more people and time to program, and its becoming harder and harder to come up with original ideas for a restricted theme/gameplay. but i understand the point, rockstar is focusing more in milking the cow than actually make GTAV a good game. thank god for modders, since FiveM launched in 2016 i never played gta online again, waaaaaaaaaay more fun in it.

    • @ghgtare

@@drewinsur7321 GTAO gave them a huge financial stability. They can now afford to not release a new game every single year and instead focus on giving their future releases more production value. RDR2 wouldn't have been as gigantic and packed full of content as it was without all the money GTAO is making for Rockstar. Sometimes I think you people would rather have Rockstar follow the Ubisoft approach with the Assasin's Creed franchise and milk the series dry by making annual releases until no one cares about it anymore.

A little disappointing he failed to mention how integral Rockstar adopting the Euphoria physics engine was. Real time physics rendering was one of the bigger sales points for GTA IV sense most games at the time utilized baked dynamic animations in place of a proper physics engine. It was a technical achievement to have this running parallel to such a detailed open world, so much so that it ended up pushing other game makers to go bigger and subsequently launched us into the golden age of gaming.

Started playing GTA4 for the first time recently. I admit it has some flaws, but its my favorite GTA game and honestly one of my favorite games of all time. I like how interactive and ambitious it was. Some cool features and mechanics are better than V. GTA V feels like the PS3 to PS4 and Xbox360 to Xbox1 console generation leap.

So I told my parents the game taught money management and business so they could buy it for me.
On the night I finally got to play it, my Dad sat behind me and observed this so-called business management game. As soon as I stepped outside of Ken Rosenberg's office, I killed a hooker and took $10 off of her.
He just went, "that's enough", took the game out of the PS2 and snapped it lmao.
I ended up borrowing the game off of one of my friends and I'd play it when my Dad wasn't home. I didn't have a memory card so I'd constantly start at the beginning of the game. Now that I look back, I nearly beat the entire game in one sitting. I just knew how to speed run the game. I used a lot of cheats too, obviously. Amazing memories tbh.

The controversy around in the UK was huge, there was some organisation called "Mothers against violent gaming" protesting about it... which didn't actually exist, it was Max Clifford's doing XD. It was also one of the first times gaming in the UK moved away from the advisory ESRB rating system and got rated by the BBFC (who rate films) instead. The BBFC's ratings actually have legal status and they gave GTA an instant 18 rating (it was nowhere near violent or sexy enough to have earned that rating). I played the hell out of the Playstation version but always had to not do missions when my mum or dad came in the room, in case they saw the swearing on the screen.

You must obviously be pretty stupid, because a 3D video game can also be in a first person perspective only. Humorously enough, I'm 21 years old and my mom still despises the game, refusing to let us play it at her house, OR play it even around her in my apartment. If I play it she continuously complains or tries to avoid the television altogether.

Sadly rockstar isn’t in their prime anymore. They’ve released 2 games since 2013, both of which were outstanding, but they continue to milk those 2 games (mainly gta 5, which is 8 years old now) for micro-transactions from their online versions. They’re even spending millions of dollars from their budget to “remaster” gta 5 for the new consoles, taking months to even put out a trailer for that, rather than announce their new game or actually remaster gta 4 or the original 3D trilogy. They’ve stopped caring about their fans opinions and started caring only about what can make them the most money.
