The ESRB is NOT "the government." It's a self-imposed industry rating board. It's literally the private gaming companies themselves rating their own industry, a result of moral panic about video games and other media in the 90s. At least as far as the ESRBs actions within the gaming industry. Essentially they had to self-regulate, or the govt was gonna come down hard. And they aren't some ultimate deciders of whether a game is allowed to be sold, definitely not these days. Anyone could release an unrated game if they wanted to. It varies by country but there's ZERO requirement that your game HAS to get passed by the ESRB. Makes me wonder how much other info was wrong lol.
They must have had big connections to hire that many big named actors to be in GTA III. I always wonder how the hell they did that? Where the hell did they get that kind of money to pay all of them? Even with the success of the past games before GTA III, they either had to literally rob a bank or sell drugs on the side!

I just wanted to say, I have watched a ton of videos about the history of Rockstar Games, but this was the best, the most thorough, and most entertaining one by far. Excellent work!
I don't know if I'm imagining this, but I remember when I got GTA3 it had no cover art and it was all black and only the text logo "Gant Theft Auto III." I didn't see ad's or anything about it. It was all word of mouth from school. "you got to play this game man, its called Grand Theft Auto." no context or anything. Just said it was the best game he ever played. Told my mom to get it for me and the way it went down, was the best way anyone could have experienced it. It was Amazing!
A heart warming homage of a series, very well documented, with a host both knowledgeable and a very talented communicator, and a very hard worked editing, always pays back. Like GTA, you only strive for the best. Very pleased to have found this channel.
I think you forgot one of the most important parts that gets overlooked. Something that was supposed to be a trend today in the game industry and talked about in gaming textbooks in the early 2000s. User created content GTA has a creator mode and a very large community who only play created jobs because, the jobs rockstar makes are bland and unimaginative.
Just a quick edit for you, Freddie Starr was a well known comedian, the hamster story was to sell tickets for his stand up shows. He did used to sing the odd Elvis song though but would do them as a skit.
Rockstar very smart. They’re releasing GTA6 on PS5 just 2 years or so before the release of the PS6 so they’ll sell another copy. Just like they did GTA5.
Thanks for the history lesson and I’m sure for time sake you didn’t expand on the RP aspect of GTA online but I think it deserves a little more than a foot note. GTA RP is the reason for the intake in sales when it was starting to decline in 2020. With RP fans and none fans alike now enjoy a second life outside of their normal existence, RP has made a whole new aspect time GTA that was once thought about in the original concept for gta. You get to become a police officer! A Medic. A nurse. A mechanic. And the list goes on! Perhaps if you haven’t already, do a video and deep dive into the world of RP!?
Not quite. Get carter is set in Newcastle not London. And it’s the ZX spectrum not ZK. Freddie star was a comedian not a singer. I’m not saying he used it but these mistakes are typical of chat gpt. it’s a great video tho
This is great, but with how fleshed out some aspects were; the PSP basically never happening and Chinatown Wars being "It wasn't too popular so don't worry about it" is a massive slap to the face with the flow and thoroughness of everything else.
That’s what I’m worried about with 6. No Dan, but at the same time rockstar has done amazing each time. So I shouldn’t be concerned, but part of me still is.
Exceptional documentary. Rockstar definitely had an impactful part of my early life. When GTA3 released, it was so mesmerizing and intriguing to me, I played it at 5-20fps avg on a business gateway computer. I finished the game later on with a gaming pc.
This is a well researched and comprehensive doc. Please consider taking a breather once in a while and let the story breathe - the narration never paused.
Great video. I clicked with a "I probably know this, but I'll watch/listen anyway" attitude. Glad I clicked because I was wrong and there was a LOT I didn't know.
As someone who has seen this company, played the first GTA before it was popular, this company dose not drop a GTA with it being ready for public consumption. It is why it is always out selling it's competitors. No other company but Nintendo has been able to do this with a single IP
I am from Dundee and it makes me so proud that I live in the city that GTA was born in, I played GTA and Lemmings to death when I was younger, I see the old DMA studio daily and it makes me smile to think the greatest franchise of all time started here.
It’s the Z*X* Spectrum btw. Also saying people didn’t build real careers around gaming in 1988, after the market had already had TWO video game crashes by that point… Tons of people had built careers off of video games by 1988 man, the NES was 3 years old ffs. Too much misinformation for me to trust anything else you have to say. If you can’t get those basic and well known details right, how can one trust the more obscure details?
1:04:55 GTA RP is NOT powered by shark cards. these two things have NOTHING to do with each other. FiveM is a community project. makes me wonder about all the other info (but overall looks good). GTA RP aka fivem aka cfx was bought by Rockstar in 2023 to probably be implemented in GTA 6.
You have great storytelling ability. I played this while i was working out at home, and it was really easy to follow - even if i didnt watch video, just listened to audio. Your skill would greatly translate to podcast or some sort of spotify audio just like this. Great work
Forgot to mention that a lot of the OG staff from R* have left. From writers, to programmers developers, etc. It goes without saying that GTA6 will be a massive success due to its reputation, however a lot of hardcore gamers are skeptical that it will be the critical success like previous GTAs have been. Can’t wait to see what happens. Phenomenal coverage though. Earned a subscriber with this one.

Don't worry about being "that" guy...his decision to (1) use the American version of the letters (Zee rather than Zed) and his mistake of saying K rather than X showed me how little he cared about the finer details of the story...totally turned me off watching any further, there's plenty of other GTA documentaries out there if I want to watch them
@@KoshDukai Nothing much that couldn't be gained by reading Rockstar's Wiki page and doing a little extra research...or even asking ChatGPT to help with the script by fleshing out details (as it will know everything that Wikipedia knows). @@smeggeruk Thought the exact same as you when he made that mistake. Carried on watching, have seen another handful of similar errors. A decade out of when something happened at one point. Crazily sloppy considering overall it seems to be a pretty decent overview. I'm going to watch the rest, however as you say, there's other documentaries. Doubt our observations here will register in the wider viewership of this video, but hopefully others notice!
Great overview. Just one correction-the ESRB isn't a government agency. It's a voluntary non-profit organization and system that game developers and publishers choose to take part in. It's sort of like the MPAA for movies. It was established in 1994 as a response to congressional hearings in the US that questioned the violence in games like Mortal Kombat, Nighttrap, and DOOM. While it is completely voluntary most publishers in the US, Canada, and Mexico submit their games to its ratings process. It's considered one of the most reliable self-regulatory non-profit orgs by the USA's Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
So incredibly inspiring. Both the Houser brothers and Benzies and everyone else who was at the core of Rockstar during those years. I wonder if the opportunity to create similar magic is still there at this moment in time, because Idk about how many others, but I'm sure as fuck inspired to take on similar creative endeavours, so a video like this is highly appreciated.
DJ Pooh was brought on to help write the story of San Andreas. By this point they had help. Which paid off big time. IV also had help I believe. V for sure. Their team has grown beyond the brothers. Well, Dan leaving was definitely a huge loss and avoidable imo. But not really. Money was always gonna triumph.
Really enjoyed the video always been a GTA fan since the beginning when I was a very young lad. I'm pretty sure the reason sales of GTA V hit a record in 2020 was because the game was free for a little while.
i am old, just a few years younger than the boys who made the first GTA game "Race & Chace" and i have played all of their games even bought GTA: London. and i still remember then GTA III launched and how we installed a MOD so we could play multiplayer. but it was little more than 1 second out of sync. the netcode from the mod was not good. but still super fun. cuz that what we all talked about in GTA III that we wanted multiplayer then we played PC games in my parents basement, the old school LAN Party´s. But i can say, sense GTA III i play the GTA Games for the story, i want to know and experience the story, same with Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2, i love the stories and the GTA Radio listening to the crazy radio talk and radio talkshows. in Vice City i did put in MP3 files in a radio folder that did become a separate radio channel. The GTA Online stuff i dont care about, not at all. i just want to play the storyline but i never rush the story line, i always wander off on my own quests and do side quests. the story is always so good i dont want to spoil the story by rushing it through. and the last GTA-V was really cool then you could play more than one character!
For people that've been following R* carefully like myself - the company has a lot to prove with GTA 6. IV was my favorite GTA after San Andreas (GTA 2 was my first PS1 game in 1999) and really every title they've been a part of has a special place in my heart. 6 will be the first big title without Dan, Lazlow, Leslie Benzies, and a few other big names in the company. Even RDR2 still involved all those creatives and it was also pretty much done with development when the stories about R* workplace culture helped spur the gaming industry to try and balance the crunch culture. So they're missing key people including script writers, the radio creative director, a lead programmer, etc. They have to appease both militant political ideologies and sensibilities, come up with an online game loop that at least somewhat bucks the standard fare of GTA 5s online to keep long-term interest, write the 1st compelling female lead in the largest franchise in gaming history... This is a huge task and it's understandable why it has taken so much time. The game will not live up to everyone's hype, but will it be successful enough creatively to keep people's faith in the series?
Well done Sir, you produce great stuff and are a natural presenter. I’d love to see your spin on Cyberpunk, I know it’s been done to death but I’d love to see something focusing on how CDPR changed due to the disastrous launch and the subsequent backlash. Especially the staff dealt with the backlash and how the company changed its structure to ensure - and give reassurance to us fans - that’ll never happen again
Would be nice if he had said (ZX Spectrum) instead of (ZK Spectrum). Could use Editing to fix that? Otherwise the best documentary about GTA I have ever seen. Praise.
I think GTA V only has that big jump in sales because people like me that have bought gta 5 like 4 times on various consoles
Exactly, the numbers are inflated because it’s been sold to around 40m people 4 times so it doesn’t count in my opinion

lol, I saw "Diego Angel" and immediately went "Ain't that the company who used to make Midtown Madness?"... Dear Mr. Diego Angel, thank you for all the great memories I had as a child, when my parents used to block me from playing GTA, xD
Not going to lie though, I LOVED this documentation!

GTA has a creator mode and a very large community who only play created jobs because, the jobs rockstar makes are bland and unimaginative.
The Bertelsmann CEO later went to jail for embezzlement and is overall an idiot.
10/10 for the research, production, and pacing! Keep it up John!
Not quite. Get carter is set in Newcastle not London. And it’s the ZX spectrum not ZK. Freddie star was a comedian not a singer. I’m not saying he used it but these mistakes are typical of chat gpt. it’s a great video tho
@@j0nnyism Good catch. I feel like a lot of people dont realize how many content creators nowadays use chatgpt to write for them...
This is great, but with how fleshed out some aspects were; the PSP basically never happening and Chinatown Wars being "It wasn't too popular so don't worry about it" is a massive slap to the face with the flow and thoroughness of everything else.
Bro I listened to this on Spotify. Now there’s a video for it. Yess!
finally smth worthy to watch, keep making bro, i love your content
GTA 6 will be the biggest game in history 💯
Not without Dan
That’s what I’m worried about with 6. No Dan, but at the same time rockstar has done amazing each time. So I shouldn’t be concerned, but part of me still is.
It's gonna be amazing. But not what it could be. Not the full potential with the Housers. Plus the online mode will overshadow it.
Completely watched the full video
Great to have good content back on this channel
Keep it up🎉🎉
Exceptional documentary.
One of the best long-form videos I have ever seen on TH-cam.
7:27 ZK? It's ZX Spectrum ...
Potato potaato
@@cynthiaandoh9575 More like potato tomato 🙃
Just one of quite a few sloppy mistakes in this video
I’m so excited to watch this one. You deserve all your success John
I just knew Scarface was a huge influence on GTA Vice City. Thanks for confirming it.
GTA2 was such an awesome game.
My favorite youtuber with my favorite game! Love it already :))
You have such a good channel. Straight gold John, keep it up
Great analysis and comprehensive doc! Not even a gamer but always loved the edginess and boundary pushing Rockstar has accomplished with GTA
It's all crap chatgpt script. I caught a lot of bad info in the first 30mins.
This is an amazing doc. So underrated.
OMG we're in for a treat! But more than 1h; i'll keep it in my "watch later" list. This will gain views in the long run! Cheers!
Unbelievably thoroughly done. Super good. Awesome polo BTW, drop a link to it if possible
not really
You have great storytelling ability. I played this while i was working out at home, and it was really easy to follow - even if i didnt watch video, just listened to audio. Your skill would greatly translate to podcast or some sort of spotify audio just like this. Great work
Great movie! Brings many memories. Born 92. It was cool to see how these titles grew behind the curtain and how these companies grew. Great job!!
46:35 that’s crazy I remember being a kid and going to the gym and trying to get my character buff 😂😂😂
This is very well made! I’ve watched a ton of these videos and I learned a lot from watching this. Very well made mate!
7:40 ZeeKay Spectrum 🤣
He obviously has no idea about the tiny machines 😂
I am so glad someone spotted that, I was beginning to wonder! 😂 The poor minnows of computer development hey 🤔😂
Last I knew it was a ZX Spectrum. :)
Great video! The only thing I expected to hear, but didn’t, was Microsoft passing on the exclusive rights to GTA 3 for the Xbox.
Man, this is a terrific video. The story was told so well. Almost done and i don't want it to end.
Impressive work 👏👏 covering all those interwoven events rich with details and still presented in such a comprehensive manner ain't an easy feat. Keep it up 🤗
ZK? :) ZX! (yes, I had to be "that guy", sorry!)
Awesome video, btw :)
Don't worry about being "that" guy...his decision to (1) use the American version of the letters (Zee rather than Zed) and his mistake of saying K rather than X showed me how little he cared about the finer details of the story...totally turned me off watching any further, there's plenty of other GTA documentaries out there if I want to watch them
@@smeggeruk but there's a lot of info I wasn't aware of about R* "pre-history" that made this a worthy watch :)
@@KoshDukai Nothing much that couldn't be gained by reading Rockstar's Wiki page and doing a little extra research...or even asking ChatGPT to help with the script by fleshing out details (as it will know everything that Wikipedia knows).
Obviously except for how to pronounce (or spell) ZX Spectrum, it seems
Just one correction? This chatgpt slop was filled with bs.
Great video! I’m really impressed you included sign language for deaf viewers
Such a great video with amazing quality. I hope it reaches a wider audience!
one of the guys who wrote the dialog for the warriors game slept on my couch, we would lan party every day and play a shitload of counterstrike
This is great, John. Must have taken you forever to put this together. Thanks!
Love you branching out, hope the video picks up some traction!
Great video John! Amazing storytelling. I learned so much about R* and T2.
Really enjoyed the video always been a GTA fan since the beginning when I was a very young lad. I'm pretty sure the reason sales of GTA V hit a record in 2020 was because the game was free for a little while.
This video is so well made. Loved it!
Dude, 420k subscribers only? You deserve WAY more. Subscribed.
John Coogan, man thanks for researching and telling the story in such an amazing way!
Good video but u could try slowing down the amount of words you're tryna push per second. Just a suggestion 👍
I'm always here for John Coogan marathon uploads.. Epic stuff
Amazing storytelling. I was engaged through the entire video, a rare thing these days!
i am old, just a few years younger than the boys who made the first GTA game "Race & Chace" and i have played all of their games even bought GTA: London. and i still remember then GTA III launched and how we installed a MOD so we could play multiplayer. but it was little more than 1 second out of sync. the netcode from the mod was not good. but still super fun. cuz that what we all talked about in GTA III that we wanted multiplayer then we played PC games in my parents basement, the old school LAN Party´s.
Vice city was my favourite. The whole 80s vibe, music, themes, story.. it was amazing
6:38 WHAT!!!!! That was them!!!! I loved Battle Beasts and have been trying to find a way to replay this one for years!!!!
Fun fact: When you own an Arcade on GTA Online, one of the Arcade games you can buy for it is Race and Chase.
Would be nice if he had said (ZX Spectrum) instead of (ZK Spectrum). Could use Editing to fix that?
Otherwise the best documentary about GTA I have ever seen. Praise.
John Coogan, Your content is so clean!
It’s rare I watch an entire hour TH-cam video and listen to every word
Big amount of research went into this video for sure! Thanks!
Massive video! I watched the whole thing. Looking forward to more videos like this
