    #fimi #osmopocket #tech4all
    This camera gimbal combo is backed by Xiaomi, and is meant to put the DJI’s Osmo Pocket under pressure. One of the few similar models that are being released this year. Can the Palm surprise us with quality and performance?
    Actually I was a little disappointed by the unboxing experience. Of course - we can well understand that Fimi had to cut the potentially right corners - but … it felt cheaper than usual. The cap protecting the camera is also cheaply made, and I really disliked that lack of case for protection.
    Specifications are interesting! Chipset on the inside is HiSilicon, and we know its performance is really good based on the multiple actioncameras tested here on the channel - like Akaso V50X, the Campark V30, etc. It is not a top-performing high-end chipset, but is in fact ticking all the boxes for what most people need - good processing, and resolutions up to 4K at 30FPS and even HEVC. If you need slow motion - either 2.7K at 60FPS or 1080p at 60, or the dedicated slow-mo format in 1080p. Wide-angle lens, with 128 FOV, a 1 / 2.6’’ sensor - and a big note - this sensor is smaller than on the DJI Osmo Pocket, therefore the low light performance for the palm is not as good.
    The Fimi Palm has been cleverly designed to have the same dimensions on the camera as the DJI device, and because that part is made of metal - the magnet-based ND filters you already may have for Osmo Pocket fit here too.
    The rest of the specs - there’s WiFi, there’s a very large 1000 mah battery which gives up to 4 hours of shooting time, and the three axis of the stabilization to offer very good responsiveness. Also - there’s a joystick to control all that.
    An additional bonus is the mounting thread - and unlike its more expensive brother, the Fimi Palm has this as a default feature.
    I’ve primarily focused on testing the video modes - and 4K is good, however not great. There’s some noise visible even on bright days, and there certainly are some areas where dynamic range is not that good - especially challenging scenes with a lot of light and dark areas. Also - when moving around you can notice in the edges the results of the distortion corrections, and being placed off the center - most objects will look weird - which is perfectly normal for such a wide-angle lens.
    In the end - the Fimi Palm is certainly a fantastic videography tool, and maybe one of the most convenient vlogging devices at the moment - due to the wide angle lens with fixed focus - by far better about that purpose than the existing competition which is at the moment limited to the Osmo Pocket. In purely videography and photography capabilities falls behind the Osmo - which was a kind of expected. But considering the fact that for the price of $200 you receive a very well developed action camera with Gimbal, good app and support for external microphone - the FImi Palm has just become the device to beat in terms of price for what it offers.

    Looking for a video device for casual video shooting. Don't really need robust one. Find it hard to choose between DJI Osmo Action or the Fimi Palm, which is half the price. What would you choose? Is the Fimi Palm reliable enough?

      Fimi Palm is great if you just don't drop it. You can get it for $159 on sale at Banggood USA, and check their accessories, as I also have their $8 external lapel mic and it sounds better than the built in mic (just set MIC LEVEL to HIGH in the camera). The Fimi Palm is unquestionably the better choice. You need to pay another £150+ on top of the £300 for the Osmo Pocket just so you can have a scroll wheel, wireless connection and wide angle lens. Crazy.

    Nice review Michael. How much better is the battery life when shooting 1080P-60fps ? Can you turn off the display to conserve battery? I just need a basic point & shoot format, set it and forget it kind of thing. thanks in advance.

    • @TechMishka
      @TechMishka  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the 1080p 60fps extends the battery life, but not too much. so far I cannot give great estimation about battery life in real-life conditions. Never got a case with battery getting empty before I was done shooting;
      One thing to note is that after 2 years of not too intensive usage, the battery of the Osmo Pocket lasts around 50 minutes now. That's around twice less than the initial capacity.

    Really smooth and nice action footage. Loved it.
    Only one question: Is there a chance that this can be used to record from outside of a moving car, at high speed, when attached by suction tripods/management, or likewise? I ask because the form factor in the Y axis is large and thus subject to great resistance with wind and momentum of the situation. If this can be achieved, it would be even better than GoPro for me, as I can be in the car and change the angle of view of the camera, at the time of flight, when monitoring it externally! But can it stand the force of the situation?

    • @TechMishka
      @TechMishka  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do this - but make sure to have a very reliable suction cup and mounts. Of course the wind resistance may be a thing, but I believe it should be fine at speeds up to 100km/h. I cannot promise it works fine, though.

    "Smartphone camera on a gimbal vs gopro on a gimbal" - that's very well described. 4 hours of shooting time from the battery? Not according to real world tests on TH-cam, but it does go a little longer than the Pocket. Having the joystick built in is handy but it's noisy in use - creaks and clicks on the audio.

    How do you reckon it compares to the Akaso V50X when mounted to a mountain bike? I only want to do casual videos but if the quality is that much better on the Fimi Palm then I might stretch my budget.

    • @TechMishka
      @TechMishka  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a mountain bike I'd go for an action camera, mounted to as short mount as possible. If the mount is longer, and the camera - larger - it brings more vibrations.
      Now, the Fimi Palm is a special case, because it has the mount in the middle of the body, and that lets you take the most out of the gimbal function. So it should be rather good if you find a good place to mount.
      But: Akaso v50X has a lot of mounts in the pack, and waterproof case - so you can use it no matter what.

    • @dasauto7346
      @dasauto7346 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechMishka I mainly want to strap it to a backpack strap but the inclusion of other mounts on the V50X and the seemingly higher durability are a big selling point as well. The waterproof case isn't important to me but a spare battery is also huge and it all comes out the box.
      With the Fimi Palm it's just the unit itself and whatever single accessory of choice (at extra cost). Perhaps buying the V50X now and a gimbal for it in the future is my best choice for now.

      @@TechMishka The offer is much appreciated, but I have opted for the Campark V30 for now. You and many others gave it great views and it's priced super low at the moment, less than 1/3rd of the price of this Fimi Palm and for what I want right now I think it should be fine.
      It's going to be interesting to see where GoPro is going to go with the Hero 9 as I don't see them getting much more out of the basic setup they have had since Hero 4 (1/2.3" + f2.8) and the cheap competitors are catching them up fast. I think they need to up the ante with a larger sensor, wider and adjustable aperture, 8k30 and 4k120, longer battery life, maybe a form of IBIS on the sensor etc, otherwise soon their price will not be justified. But right now if I had the money it would be Hero 8 all day long!

    I own one and tried these days. I found that it have lots of bugs of the firmware. Let me to list them one by one.
    1. The iris shown on my computer is f/5.6, not f/2.4
    2. DNG in photo mode is in a wrong color temp, and it seems not carrying more detail than the JPG
    3. Sometimes get a weird frame size in video mode, HD 1880x800, 4K 3528x1500
    4. 4K video is not smooth, should be some drop frame problem
    5. F-log of FIMI PALM is another story, I think it have just 8-9 stops of dynamic range, similar to REC709
    6. The WIFI is default to turn off everytime
    7. The joystick not working sometimes
    8. I have no idea what can be work with its bluetooth. A bluetooth mic? A blurtooth remote?
    As I already spend on this of course I am looking forward to their further firmware update to make it better.
    But I don't think It can compare to OSMO Pocket as a competitor now

    • @TechMishka
      @TechMishka  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THanks Anthony, this is wonderful summary!
      I also found some videos that do not have the constant required bitrate.
      As for the DNG - most of these small cameras need special conversion, and most likely Fimi will come up with a tool or at least a tutorial how to do that.
      Maybe putting these together and sending them to their support, asking them to pass it to the dev-team will make some people work on these issues.
